Join us for an intimate dive into two Warren Zevon albums - 'Life'll Kill Ya' (2000) and 'My Ride's Here' (2002). In this third episode of a three part tribute to Warren Zevon, LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl and host Scott Dudelson take you on an journey deep into two albums that showcase Zevon's unflinching wit, deep introspection, and fearless exploration of life, death, and everything in between. To peel back the layers of these remarkable records, we are joined by two of Zevon's closest collaborators: Jorge Calderón, his trusted lifetime co-writer and multi-instrumentalist, and Noah Scot Snyder, the engineer and mixer who helped bring 'My Ride's Here' to life. Together, they share personal insights, untold stories, and a wealth of behind-the-scenes moments that bring Zevon's genius into sharp focus. What You'll Discover in This Episode: A Deep Dive into the Creative Process: Learn how songs like “Porcelain Monkey” emerged from everyday conversations and vivid storytelling. Jorge shares how a Graceland postcard sparked the song's haunting narrative about Elvis Presley. Zevon's Evolving Career: Explore how 'Life'll Kill Ya' marked Zevon's return after years of struggling for a record deal, with much of the album being self-recorded in his home studio, aptly named Anatomy of a Headache. Dark Humor Meets Mortality: Hear the story behind “My Shit's F***ed Up,” a raw and prophetic anthem written years before Zevon's cancer diagnosis, as well as the poignant “Don't Let Us Get Sick." Collaborating with Legends: We dive into Zevon's experience co-writing with literary giants like Hunter S. Thompson and Paul Muldoon, and how that experience carved the path into Zevon's final album "The Wind." The Practical Realities of Creativity: Noah Scot Snyder reflects on working with a meticulous artist who pushed the limits of early digital recording technology while mentoring a young engineer in the process. The Lost Tapes: The pair reveal that the Master tapes for 'Life'll Kill Ya' are lost and only because of Zevon & Snyder's foresight were the tapes for his follow up album "The Wind" preserved & stored properly. Why This Episode Matters: 'Life'll Kill Ya' and 'My Ride's Here' represent two of Zevon's most introspective and uncompromising works, created during a period of significant personal and professional transformation. Through the anecdotes, humor, and heartfelt reflections of those who knew him best, this episode offers an intimate portrait of a man who refused to compromise his artistic vision. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Warren Zevon's music, this conversation sheds light on the creative genius and enduring legacy of one of rock's most distinctive voices. This is the third part of a three part tribute to Zevon, check my channel for the other two episodes featuring amazing interviews with Zevon's closest collaborators including Jorge Calderón, Waddy Wachtel, Noah Scot Snyder, Bob Glaub and guest host Shooter Jennings. Pat's back on the Record Night Podcast, but this time we're subjecting him to an album of our choosing. It was Collin's turn to pick and he went with "Life'll Kill Ya" by Warren Zevon (2000). As the title would indicate, this album centers around mortality. Two years after the release of this album, Warren Zevon was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer (Mesothelioma) and passed away a year later on Sep. 7th, 2003. At the end of this episode, Pat reveals his selection which was also released in 2000, 20 years to the day we recorded the episode (Oct. 24th). Produced by Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade 1. I Was in the House When the House Burned Down 2. Life'll Kill Ya 3. Porcelain Monkey (Jorge Calderón, Zevon) 4. For My Next Trick I'll Need a Volunteer 5. I'll Slow You Down 6. Hostage-O Side B 7. Dirty Little Religion 8. Back in the High Life Again (Steve Winwood, Will Jennings) 9. My Shit's Fucked Up 10. Fistful of Rain (Jorge Calderón, Zevon) 11. Ourselves to Know 12. Well, this is something totally different. You may or may now be aware that the Rockfest Radio shows on Mix FM have been shut down indefinitely due to Covid 19. This is the first episode of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show to be recorded from my home studio or should I say bar. It was a technical challenge of note but I have figured it out. You may find some odd bits and pieces but it gets better as it goes along. The big challenge is the volume balance. Getting the voice to record at a similar level to the music is not easy at all. And then there is the difficulty of not getting all the dogs barking, pots banging general noise that comes from doing this outside a state of the art studio. Desperate times call for desperate measures indeed. As I mention in the intro it does however mean that the show now gets a bit more sweary, a bit more political and a bit more opinionated, the song, however, remains the same. Anyway see what you think. The show kicks off live with Joe Bonamassa and then we continue with Those Damn Crowes. Tom Petty makes an appearance a bit later on and I play the Skid Row cover of Little Wing that I have been meaning to play for ages. Check out those solo's at the end, man Dave and Scotty can wail. It was great playing George Harris's band the Raven Age straight after his famous dad's band and it sure holds its own. Quite a bit of SA stuff in the form of Agro and Deadline as well as TSORR stalwarts Fokofpolisiekar. Santana sounded great, first time on the show and then all the usual stuff you've come to expect, Stranglers, scorpions, Airbourne, etc. Playing Warren Zevon's 'My Shit's Fucked Up' was liberating. Anyway check it out, hopefully, it doesn't disappoint. One thing for sure I miss the audience and the adrenaline of live radio. Without the Whatsapp line and all the regulars tuning in its a bit different. Thanks, Covid, thanks a fucking lot. :-(Artists featured : Joe Bonamassa, Those Damn Crowes, Led Zeppelin, The Gaslight Anthem, Five Finger Death Punch, Santana, Scorpions, Black Label Society, Queensryche, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, The Raven Age, The Offspring, The Stranglers, Skid Row, Greta Van Fleet, Agro, Deadline, Tom Petty, Papa Roach, Tom Petty, Asking Alexandria, Blackberry Smoke, Foo Fighters, Pop Evil, In Flames, Airbourne, Warren Zevon
