Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! This week's quiz: On 13 July I asked you yet another question about France's snap legislative elections. As you know, the left coalition New Popular Front won the most seats, followed by Macron's centre-right alliance, with the far-right National Rally in third place. None of the parties have an absolute majority. There's been something of a “cease-fire” during the Olympic Games, so not much has been done. However, the French constitution sets strict deadlines for when key positions must be filled; one of these is the appointment of chairs for each of the eight standing parliamentary committees. That was your question – what are those eight standing committees, and by which date must the chairs of each committee be decided? The answer is: Finance, foreign affairs, defence, economy, social affairs, culture, sustainable development, and law. The date for deciding the chairs was 20 July. So that has happened: six of the eight committees are headed by the centre-right coalition, and the other two were taken by the left coalition. The centre-right and the left coalition joined forces and no position was allocated to the far-right National Rally. In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “What was your biggest life-changing decision, and how did it change your life?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI English listener Malik Allah Bachaya Khokhar from the Sungat Radio Listeners Club in Muzaffargarh, Pakistan. Malik is also the winner of this week's bonus question – congratulations, Malik! There are two winners from India this week: Nafisa Khatun, the president of the RFI Mahila Shrota Sangha Club in Hariharpara, and Mousumi Khatun, a member of the RFI International DX Radio Listeners Club in Murshidabad. Moving over to Bangladesh, there's Shrabonty Shermin, a member of the RFI Surfers' Society Bangladesh in Rajshahi, and RFI English listener Rowshan Ara Labone from Dhaka.Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's programme: “Pendulum” by Eberhard Weber, performed by the composer and Paul McCandless; “Contrapunctus 1” from J.S. Polling expert Will Jennings joins the podcast team to take a deep dive into the current state of the polls, how polling works and what the forthcoming election might mean for trust in our politics. Plus: The prime minister's flagship smoking ban has passed its first parliamentary hurdle, but also exposed some fundamental philosophical divisions within the Conservative Party. Eric Clapton is a living legend in the rock world.  He was a member of the Yardbirds from 1963 to 1965, a founding member of the supergroup Cream, founding member of Blind Faith, founder of Derek and the Dominos, and a multi-album soloist.  He has received 18 Grammy awards, sold more than 280 million records world-wide, and is the only three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Unplugged was recorded in front of an audience at Bray Studios in England for the "MTV Unplugged" series.  This series was started in 1989, and several artists would release albums from this show, including Mariah Carey, Nirvana, and Page and Plant.  Clapton's Unplugged album was a monster hit, winning three Grammy awards in 1993.  It was Clapton's bestselling album, and the bestselling live album of all time, selling 26 million copies.  Clapton recorded this in January 1992, and it contains a mix of his solo material, songs from previous groups, and blues standards from long ago.Eric Clapton continues to play and tour today.  He recently released a song called "Voice of a Child" in late 2023 and organized a charity concert to raise funds for children in the Gaza Strip.  He also collaborated with Van Morrison in November 2020 on an anti-lockdown single called "Stand and Deliver," and said regarding vaccine mandates that he would not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present.  Bruce presents this laid back live blues album in this week's podcast. Running On FaithThis track was originally on the Journeyman album from 1989, Clapton's eleventh studio album.  Jerry Lynn Williams wrote this song, as he did several other Clapton songs including "Pretending" and "Forever Man."  They lyrics tell of taking each day as it comes in confidence that love will come to the singer in due time.Tears in HeavenThis song originally appeared on the soundtrack for the 1991 film "Rush."  In March of that year Clapton's 4-year old son Connor died in a fall from a New York City apartment, causing Clapton to isolate himself for a while.  Scoring the music for the film gave him a way to cope with the loss.  He wrote the first verse and asked Will Jennings to write the rest.  It is deliberately ambiguous, as it is about his son, but also meant to be part of the film.  It is his best-selling single in the United States.Rollin' and Tumblin'The recording of this song picks up mid-verse because it was recorded in a break when the cameras and recording equipment were off.  Clapton began performing this Muddy Waters blues song impromptu, and the musicians around him joined in.  It was last performed by Clapton when he was with Cream, and the audience clearly loves it.LaylaThe signature song from Derek and the Dominos was significantly altered by Clapton and acoustic guitar player Andy Fairweather.  They changed it to a shuffle beat, removed many of the familiar riffs and piano exit, and jazzed it up.  Clapton is also singing an octave lower than the original, which was at the top of his vocal range back in the day. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Martin”Martin Lawrence had a comedy series popular in the US at this time, with Martin playing many characters, both male and female. STAFF PICKS:Sister Shade by Mary's DanishWayne brings us an unfortunately underrated song from the 90's as his staff pick.  This grunge group actually featured two female lead singers: Gretchen Seager and Julie Ritter. Mary's Danish formed in the late 1980's and released four albums.  Unfortunately, they became a victim of mismanagement, incompetent promotion, and a difficult contract that left them without money from the royalties. Even Flow  by Pearl JamLynch's staff pick is a signature song from Pearl Jam.  The music was written as an instrumental demo before Eddie Vedder's arrival as front man for the band.  Vedder wrote the lyrics focusing on the life of a homeless person overlooked by society.  Originally performed live in October 1990, it has become Pearl Jam's most performed song. These Are Days by 10,000 ManiacsRob showcases another group with a female lead for his staff pick.  The song encourages the listener to recognize the miracle in front of you, to live in the moment.  Many associate it with the birth of a child, though the meaning is left ambiguous.  This song is one of 10,000 Maniacs' biggest hits, and is one of the last the group did before Natalie Merchant left to pursue a solo career.Runaway Train by Elton John (featuring Eric Clapton)Bruce wraps up the staff picks with the second single from John's 1992 album "The One."  The song includes contributions from Eric Clapton, who plays guitar and provides vocals in the second verse.  "The One" was Elton John's 23rd studio album, and his biggest selling album in the US since 1976.  The lyrics compare trying to get back into control of life to a runaway train. COMEDY TRACK:Taco Grande by “Weird Al” YankovicYou can't go wrong with the sultry parodies of Weird Al as an exit from today's podcast. #839 - Michael Utley Returns The Michael Utley Returns Interview on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? What do you say we get this rolling? Oh, as the announcer I should tell you that this is The Paul Leslie Hour. It's an interview show. Been going for 19 years. If it's your first time: welcome. Thank you for tuning in. So, this is a very brief interview. It's an impromptu episode with returning guest Michael Utley. Michael Utley has been the musical director and keyboardist with Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band since 1973. He's far too humble to admit this, but he's an authority on Jimmy Buffett. He played on every single album since A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean. Mr. Utley also happens to be an incredibly nice man. That's just the way it is. So, it can be a strange thing that reunites people. In this case, Utley called Paul to comment about the country song “When the Wild Life Betrays Me,” that he co-wrote with Jimmy Buffett and Will Jennings. It appeared on Buffett's 1984 album “Riddles in the Sand.” Utley was just about to do a sound check. You see, the evening of this interview he was just about to take the stage with Jimmy and the band in Key West, Florida. They talk about that and a little more. We're really working on growing the Paul Leslie YouTube channel. Please subscribe for more exclusive content like this. Yes, folks. It's free and quick. And we thank you. Let's get right into it with a masterful musician, Mr. Michael Utley. On 24 March, a collaboration between Acid Jazz Records and the Flying Dutchman label sees the release of veteran soul singer Billy Valentine's new album. The first album of new music on the iconic jazz label since 1976. Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth features testifying renditions of eight message songs, with Valentine's emphatic, lissome voice drawing upon the soul-jazz legacy of such Flying Dutchman singer and songwriters as Gil Scot-Heron and Leon Thomas. In addition to songs by these two extraordinary talents, the album also features songs originally written and recorded by Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Eddie Kendricks, War, and Prince. Billy Valentine may not be a household name but should be familiar to most from Simply Red's 1983 Rendition of the Valentine Brothers' ‘Money's Too Tight (To Mention)'. Originally written and recorded by Billy and his brother John, the song was a protest against President Ronald Reagan's economic policies. Around the time of performing with the Valentine Brothers, Billy's recognition as a songwriter emerged after penning songs for other artists such as Will Jennings, Ray Charles, and the Neville Brothers. After the demise of the Valentine Brothers, Billy struck up a songwriting partnership with Bob Thiele, Jr. (son of Flying Dutchman Records' founder, Bob Thiele), which led to him singing demos for Warner Chappell songwriters, such as Gerry Goffin, Mark Isham, Burt Bacharach, and Hal David. Singing demos opened doors for Valentine to work in television and movies. His vocals can be heard in such works as: the 1991 classic movie, The Five Heartbeats, and songs produced for TV series including Boston Legal and, with Thiele, Jr., on music composed for the television show, Sons of Anarchy. Now, after several decades spent working together, Valentine and long-time collaborator Thiele Jr. present Billy Valentine & The Universal Truth. Produced by Thiele Jr., the album recording began at Hollywood's legendary East-West Studios (Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Elvis Presley's ‘68 Comeback Special, Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On and Michael Jackson's Thriller) right before the coronavirus pandemic. As the album session proceeded, the world erupted in protest after the May 2020 murder of George Floyd, adding to the poignancy of the recordings with the songs taking on a new urgency. Having always been drawn to message songs – Valentine remembers witnessing the civil rights protests through the Deep South in the United States, the Kent State University shootings in 1970, and the Vietnam War and its devastating aftermath on many military veterans returning to civilian life – the album's selection of songs' specific topics and themes speak to modern times. In particular, the rise of the Black Lives Matter after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, who murdered Trayvon Martin; the polarizing presidency of Donald Trump, which ended with the violent uprising at the Capitol Building; and the rise in gun violence amidst economic and social disparities, all made more apparent during the height of the pandemic. Opening with a plaintive makeover of Curtis Mayfield's 1970s ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue', a sobering ballad about projecting racial pride and Black humanity in the face of insurmountable odds, the theme continues on Valentine's righteous rendition of Eddie Kendricks' 1972 Black Power anthem, ‘My People Hold On'. The remote work setup helped Will develop a second set of habits.  Now that people are transitioning out of the remote work setup, there's a need for a third set of habits or redeveloping a new routine.  Working with a standing desk makes Will work better because movement and walking give him a different energy. [06:58] Proudest Moment #1: Life Lessons and Experiences Growing Up  Will is proud of his experiences growing up — both good and bad — since they shaped him into who he is today.  He acknowledges his experiences growing up as the building blocks of his life today.  Who we are today is a result of where we came from.  [08:19] Will's Building Blocks  Will grew up in West London, which was a very multicultural area back then.  Growing up in a melting pot exposed him to different people and cultures.  His education in London also influenced his beliefs and values.  His early years allowed him to build his character and try different things.  [10:57] Lessons from Childhood  Will wants to instil the value of commitment and work ethic in his children.  He wants to show the importance of being honest and staying present.  Will finds importance in trusting in yourself and your capabilities, and these are the basics that he wants to pass on to the next generation.  [16:05] Proudest Moment #2: Being Okay with Learning Things  Will takes pride in not knowing everything and being open to learning new things.  He is open-minded and has a thirst for learning.  For Will, the ability to pass on knowledge is part of finding solutions to issues.  Sometimes, we also need to listen and learn from other people's perspectives.  His readiness to learn new things also allows him to connect with people and broaden his perspective.  [21:31] On His Thirst for Learning  For Will, it's part of his role now as a leader.  Learning and unlearning are part of building connections with people and helping them reach their potential.  There is no rulebook on how to navigate the pandemic. It pushed Will to take a step back and learn how to manage people after all the physical and psychological changes.  Sometimes, you have to be humble and accept that you don't know everything.  [25:36] On Leading an Organisation  Will says he does not want to give people a false sense of comfort that things will be okay.  Instead, he focuses on equipping people with tools that allow them to accept and face the volatility of reality.  As a leader, Will believes in being straightforward, enabling support, and allowing people to be open about their fears and aspirations.  It is essential to allow people to be vulnerable and encourage them to reach their full potential.  [34:18] Proudest Moment #3: The Company He Keeps The people surrounding him are a never-ending source of inspiration, pride and optimism.  For Will, every persona meets plays a role in his life.  The interactions and connections he establishes are opportunities to gain new perspectives and learn.  [37:45] On Staying Present    Will admits that he struggles with being preoccupied with other things rather than staying present during family time.  It is essential to focus on things that you can control.  [42:02] Will's Secret to Success  Understand what it is you're trying to achieve.  Stay curious, learn new things, and listen. Be fair in how you treat people.  Have the courage to take on any challenge.  Have a growth mindset.  5 Powerful Quotes  [11:14] “If you really do want something, and if you really do want to be somewhere, or to achieve something even if it's for yourself… commit to it and really trust yourself to do it.”  [24:19] “You just have to be humble enough to accept the fact that you don't have the answer.” [27:48] “If you make sure you look after yourself, that you're the best that you can be, that you're delivering your potential, the result will take care of itself.”  [38:56] “And you should embrace what you can control because to think and worry and to be preoccupied with things that are outside your control is really to deal with it twice.” [46:20] "You don't really fail — you just learn."   About the Guest  Will Jennings is the Chief Executive Officer of Rabobank in the UK. I have attempted the beautiful love ballad from the famous English film 'Titanic'. Sung unforgettably by Celine Dion with haunting music by James Horner amd lyrics by Will Jennings, the song's inspiration clearly goes back to medieval traditional European folk and operatic ballads as reinterpreted in 1970s rock music. The vocals mix and merge with the enveloping music that uses the tin whistle along with the guitar and electronic instruments, amd starting softly amd wistfully, rises to a dramatic, powerful crescendo. The tin whistle ( or similar simple woodwind instruments) have an old history in Celtic, English and Native American folk music traditions apart from others.

Drawing from the influence of folk artists such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and Gregory Alan Isakov, Will's songs are all centered around an acoustic guitar and his voice, but can often grow into full orchestral pieces. Inspired by fleeting moments of truth, beauty, and light, Will's quest as a musician evokes the spirit of an American patriot and a Christian mystic.  His first album, “To Liberty, with Love", that he recorded, mixed and mastered himself, is a concept album about a gold miner, journeying across the frontier, to reunite with his wife, Liberty. It was successfully produced from an online Kickstarter campaign, and the first 100 copies were wrapped in handmade cd covers and personally delivered.  Currently in the studio for his second album, “the Calm within the Storm", Will aims to capture the essence of the year 2020; in all its chaotic, horrifying, and eye-opening detail, with the hope of bringing some clarity and catharsis to its listeners. Covid-19 has made the job of levelling up, the agenda elevated by the current Government to address the deep geographical inequalities present within the UK, much harder. The levelling up narrative is made up of many strands and is a concept that has been seen by some as complex, undefined and ambiguous, prompting the question what does the future hold for the agenda over the next twelve months and beyond? For this episode of City Talks, Andrew Carter is joined by Will Jennings, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Southampton and co-founder of Centre for Towns, who speaks about the realignment of British politics; the political value of levelling up; the five contradictions it imposes; and wider conversations surrounding the agenda within the framework of his latest work. “The Politics of Levelling Up” is co-authored by Will Jennings, Laurence McKay and Gerry Stoker and published in The Political Quarterly. If you only ever thought of this podcast as “The Top 100 Project” anyway, then, well, nothing to see here. As for episode #351, we have the privilege of tackling one of the best reality-based space films ever made. Apollo 13 is a thrilling and inspiring docu-drama, but it’s also a very believable procedural. Ron Howard has never directed anything better than this. It’s also another in a long line of bittersweet Tom Hanks movies. He’s excellent, of course, but all the actors (particularly Ed Harris) are dynamite. We DO get into some alternate casting choices---as we did on Inside Out last week---but that’s just for fun because this cast is aces. And let’s hear it for the teamwork of all the real-life people involved in this mission (including their families), but also of course for the cast & crew of this gripping movie. Oh, and let’s also hear it for that heroic LEM! Guenter will strap you in tight as we break down the wonderful Apollo 13. Well, Actually: Other movies DID use the KC 135 “Vomit Comet” to shoot some weightless scenes, including The Mummy a few years ago (the Tom Cruise one). Also, James Horner DID win 2 Oscars for Titanic (for the music score and for co-writing “My Heart Will Go On” with Will Jennings, not with Celine Dion). If you have to help 3 guys get out of an outer-space pickle, you’ll need some Sparkplug Coffee to help you stay awake. They’ve got so much great stuff in addition to the fine, fine coffee. Conversation-Democracy 2025 Podcast on “Political Trust in Times of COVID-19” produced by ContentGroup A week ago, the British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab announced that the number of people killed by the coronavirus in the United Kingdom stood at 32,313, the second highest death toll in the world. Health experts believe that the real figure is likely to be closer to 50,000. The number of deaths from COVID-19 in Australia currently stand at 103. Critics have accused a “complacent” British government of “massively underestimating” the gravity of the coronavirus crisis. The prominent Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that the situation in the UK was “like a nightmare from which you cannot awake, but in which you landed because of your own fault or stupidity”. London correspondent Christoph Meyer writes, Britain has emerged as Europe’s “problem child” of the COVID-19 crisis. Although international comparisons of COVID-19 death tolls, are methodologically problematic and morally bankrupt, there can be no doubt that the lived citizen experience of COVID-19 has been dramatically different in the United Kingdom when compared with Australia. Every citizen has a heart-breaking personal story to tell. In contrast, most Australians, have been blessed voyeurs on the pandemic further perpetuating its image as the Lucky Country. In this podcast Mark Evans and Michelle Grattan explore differences in the management, experience and impact of the crisis in the company of three leading British academic thinkers and members of the [Trustgov project](https://trustgov.net) at the University of Southampton. Will Jennings is Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Southampton. He is an expert on public policy and political behaviour, Principle Investigator on the Trustgov project, Co-Director of the UK Policy Agendas Project, and elections analyst for Sky News. Dr. Jennifer Gaskell joined the TrustGov project as a Research Fellow in July 2019. She holds an interdisciplinary PhD in Web Science from the University of Southampton. Her research focuses on the ways new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) impact civic and political participation. She is also the co-founder of Build Up, a social enterprise working at the intersection of new technologies, civic engagement and peace-building. Plus, trying to get inside the head of Coach Michael Maguire a few days out from naming his NRL side to trial against the Warriors this weekend.   Enjoy and thanks for listening! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
