Join us for an intimate dive into two Warren Zevon albums - 'Life'll Kill Ya' (2000) and 'My Ride's Here' (2002). In this third episode of a three part tribute to Warren Zevon, LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl and host Scott Dudelson take you on an journey deep into two albums that showcase Zevon's unflinching wit, deep introspection, and fearless exploration of life, death, and everything in between. To peel back the layers of these remarkable records, we are joined by two of Zevon's closest collaborators: Jorge Calderón, his trusted lifetime co-writer and multi-instrumentalist, and Noah Scot Snyder, the engineer and mixer who helped bring 'My Ride's Here' to life. Together, they share personal insights, untold stories, and a wealth of behind-the-scenes moments that bring Zevon's genius into sharp focus. What You'll Discover in This Episode: A Deep Dive into the Creative Process: Learn how songs like “Porcelain Monkey” emerged from everyday conversations and vivid storytelling. Jorge shares how a Graceland postcard sparked the song's haunting narrative about Elvis Presley. Zevon's Evolving Career: Explore how 'Life'll Kill Ya' marked Zevon's return after years of struggling for a record deal, with much of the album being self-recorded in his home studio, aptly named Anatomy of a Headache. Dark Humor Meets Mortality: Hear the story behind “My Shit's F***ed Up,” a raw and prophetic anthem written years before Zevon's cancer diagnosis, as well as the poignant “Don't Let Us Get Sick." Collaborating with Legends: We dive into Zevon's experience co-writing with literary giants like Hunter S. Thompson and Paul Muldoon, and how that experience carved the path into Zevon's final album "The Wind." The Practical Realities of Creativity: Noah Scot Snyder reflects on working with a meticulous artist who pushed the limits of early digital recording technology while mentoring a young engineer in the process. The Lost Tapes: The pair reveal that the Master tapes for 'Life'll Kill Ya' are lost and only because of Zevon & Snyder's foresight were the tapes for his follow up album "The Wind" preserved & stored properly. Why This Episode Matters: 'Life'll Kill Ya' and 'My Ride's Here' represent two of Zevon's most introspective and uncompromising works, created during a period of significant personal and professional transformation. Through the anecdotes, humor, and heartfelt reflections of those who knew him best, this episode offers an intimate portrait of a man who refused to compromise his artistic vision. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Warren Zevon's music, this conversation sheds light on the creative genius and enduring legacy of one of rock's most distinctive voices.   This is the third part of a three part tribute to Zevon, check my channel for the other two episodes featuring amazing interviews with Zevon's closest collaborators including Jorge Calderón, Waddy Wachtel, Noah Scot Snyder, Bob Glaub and guest host Shooter Jennings. Send us a textEpisode 161So there I was, a disciplined warrior of fitness and health, a paragon of self-control, fasting until 2 PM like a monk on a spiritual quest. I was the kind of person who could walk past a donut shop without even a twitch in my resolve. But then, I got a peek behind the curtain of retirement life. Four days off—four glorious, structure-free days. What could go wrong?Turns out, everything.Day one, I woke up with the sun shining through the windows, the birds chirping outside, and I thought, "You know what? I deserve a treat." Next thing I know, I'm face-deep in a bowl  12 PM, feeling like a rebel without a cause. The gym? A distant memory. I traded my kettlebells for the TV remote, and my workout gear for pajamas—yes, the ones with the elastic waistband because, well, you know.Day two, I was firmly entrenched in the chaos. Breakfast? Why not. Second breakfast? Sure. Elevensies? Don't mind if I do! My fridge, which once housed kale, quinoa, and righteous intentions, was now a crime scene of leftover pizza and half-eaten bags of chips. I wasn't just off the wagon; I was driving it straight into the nearest fast-food drive-thru.By day three, I was on a first-name basis with the delivery guy. I forgot what "clean eating" even meant—was it when you wipe the crumbs off your shirt before grabbing the next snack? And lifting? The only thing I lifted was the lid of another box of donuts. My muscles started texting me, "Miss you, bro." I left them on read.Day four arrived, and I realized I had become the very thing I swore to destroy: a retiree without a mission. I had fallen so far, so fast, that I half-expected to find myself in one of those "Before" pictures on a fitness ad. You know, the kind where the guy looks like he's been wrestling with doughnuts instead of dumbbells. But as I clawed my way back to the land of structure and discipline, I learned a valuable lesson: Life without routine is like a treadmill with no speed control—you either stand still or fly off into the junk food aisle. Retirement might be a long way off, but I've seen the darkness that lies beyond the 9-to-5, and let me tell you, it's paved with potato chips and procrastination. So, here's to getting back on track, one broccoli floret at a time. Because chaos is fun for a weekend, but I'd rather spend my golden years lifting weights than lifting pizza boxes.Put it Off - Dolly PartonSuede - TrashSupport the showInsta@justpassingthroughpodcastContact:justpassingthroughpodcast@gmail.comArtwork @digitalnomadicart on Insta

Dalton, legendary singer-songwriter and outlaw country artist, recently spoke with Matt Jolley on Georgia Radio about her latest project. “What Don't Kill Ya,” is available today and marks the third single, from her upcoming album For The Black Sheep, which is set to come out this summer. The song combines elements of country and blues and addresses the challenges of life, such as breakups and general hardships, with the message that these difficulties make us stronger. With relatable lyrics like “sometimes you're right, sometimes you're wrong, you make mistakes, but you go on - and somehow life just rolls along and what don't kill ya makes you strong,” Dalton has created a song that resonates with many. Blood Feast (1963), Two Thousand Maniacs! (1964), The Gruesome Twosome (1967), The Wizard of Gore (1970)  When Herschell Gordon Lewis made his first nudie cutie film in 1961, nobody would have expected that he'd become one of the most important names in the history of horror.  But with the release of Blood Feast just two years later, Lewis and his producing partner David F. Friedman would invent the gore subgenre and would fundamentally reshape horror as we knew and understood it. And for about a decade after it, Lewis would continue to release gore-obsessed fare to grindhouses and drive-ins across the nation.  When those sorts of theaters started to fade away in the 70s, so did Lewis, who went back to his previous career in advertising. But in the 80s and beyond his fame was resuscitated on home video and in the pages of magazines like Fangoria and Deep Red where he became known as The Godfather of Gore.  With some help from Christopher Wayne Curry, author of A Taste of Blood: The Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis, we dive into four of his films and manage to talk about a whole slew of others.  Movies mentioned in this episode: Bell, Bare and the Beautiful (1963), Blood Diner (1987), Blood Feast (1963), Blood Feast (2016), Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat (2002), Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Boin-n-g (1963), Color Me Blood Red (1965), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Gore Gore Girls (1972), Gruesome Twosome (1967), I Drink Your Blood (1971), Intolerance (1916), Jigoku (1960), Mardi Gras Massacre (1978), Moonshine Mountain (1964), Multiple Maniacs (1970), Night of the Living Dead (1968), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Pit Stop (1969), Polyester (1981), Scream Baby Scream (1969), Scum of the Earth (1963), A Taste of Blood (1967), Tarantula (1955), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Serial Mom (1994), This Stuff'll Kill Ya! Django and Smut feast on the films of exploitation filmmaker extraordinaire Herschell Gordon Lewis (HGL), aka the Godfather of Gore, who went from journalism and TV and radio sports to making nudie cuties, invented the gore genre, did a bunch of other films and then left the movies to teach others how to be a success in marketing and advertising. "Anyone can point a video camera," he said, "but it takes talent to get an audience to come and watch your film." He sure had that talent.  Cultpix has almost all of his films, starting with nudie cuties such as "The Adventures of Lucky Pierre" (1961), "Nature's Playmates" (1962), "Daughter of the Sun" (1962), "Goldilocks and the Three Bares" (1963), "Boin-n-g!" (1963) where Lewis sends up the sexploitation biz, and "Bell, Bare and Beautiful" (1964), with burlesque legend Virginia Bell. Lewis then switched tack completely and single-handedly invented the gore genre with the Blood Trilogy: "Blood Feast" (1963) where the caterer/cultist Fuad Ramses asks the classic question: “Have you ever had… an Egyptian feast?”, "Two Thousand Maniacs" (1964) with its epic theme song "The South's Gonna Rise Again", and "Color Me Blood Red" (1965).  His other gore greats included "A Taste of Blood" (1967), "The Gruesome Twosome" (1967), "The Wizard of Gore" (1970) and his last 70s film "The Gore Gore Girls" (1972), "a fascinatingly sick swan song." He also did other genres such as the exposé of smut peddling "Scum of the Earth" (1963), folk horror "Moonshine Mountain" (1964), trippy horror "Something Weird" (1967), delinquents "Just for the Hell of It" (1968) and biker film "She-Devils on Wheels" (1968) and Hillbilly horror  "This Stuff'll Kill Ya!"(1972).  We also have the documentary "Herschell Gordon Lewis: the Godfather of Gore" (2010). Smut interviews Jimmy Maslon, who saw the popularity of Lewis' films on US college campuses first-hand and had the foresight to start buying the rights to his films long before the advent of VHS. They discuss the movies, music and marketing genius of Lewis. On Lewis'; career, AllMovie wrote, "With his better-known gore films, Herschell Gordon Lewis was a pioneer, going further than anyone else dared, probing the depths of disgust and discomfort onscreen with more bad taste and imagination than anyone of his era."And dig the HGL Spotify playlist.

First, I talk a bit about the Ephebopus slings that I recently acquired. Then...sure, spiders can bite, have venom, and can put a hurting on anyone foolish enough to trifle with them. However, there are some spiders available in the trade that have been the victim of over exaggeration and hyperbole to the point where many will refuse to keep them. In this episode, we take a look at 5 spiders that receive this dubious distinction.

Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week's guest is Skylar Sarkis (of Taking Meds). We chatted about Warren Zevon's 2000 album, "Life'll Kill Ya." We're both huge fans of Zevon, so this talk really brushes on his whole career, while mainly focusing on this specific album. Warren Zevon was a complicated person who had a lot of demons, a lot of which is mentioned in the book, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead," written by his late wife Crystal Zevon, with a forward by Carl Hiassen, I'd highly recommend it. Skylar plays in Taking Meds, as well as Growing Stone, Who Decides and Highway Sniper. As you'll hear in the chat, Taking Meds has a new album coming out later this year. I've heard it and it sounds amazing. https://takingmeds.bandcamp.com/
