While today he is best remembered for an iconic television character, today's Legend also has deep roots as a stand-up comic -- one with a particularly biting and intelligent approach. We're talking about Richard Belzer, who surmounted a difficult childhood through comedy. After moving to New York as a young man Belzer immersed himself in a burgeoning satirical scene, cutting tracks for the National Lampoon Radio Hour, serving as the warm-up comic for SNL, and even acting as the opening act for Warren Zevon on his Excitable Boy tour. Today, Belzer has a whole different fan base who discovered him during his 23 year run as Detective John Munch in the long-running Law and Order television franchise (beginning with Homicide: Life on the Streets). As played by Belzer, Munch was sarcastic, whip-smart, cynical, prone to conspiracy theories, and highly entertaining -- just like his creator. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Belzer? Belzer's first appearance on Letterman broke him with a much wider audience and is a great sample of his style. https://youtu.be/r5uK9pGIzW8?si=G-_nnBFyVuv2kCds Belzer's character John Munch on Homicide: Life on the streets was streetwise, cynical, and very funny. Here's a cut of some of Munch's best asides. https://youtu.be/7wOxN3P0BDo?si=8vpXiMm37mLmFY3t

Whether he likes it or not, Warren Zevon will forever be most remembered for his surprise hit “Werewolves of London,” but he's a far more complex and interesting songwriter than most folks are aware. Forever a musician's musician, Zevon's unique voice has influenced scores of artists although he himself has remained something of a cult figure over the decades. While 1978's Excitable Boy does indeed feature his biggest hit, it is also home to some of the most sharp-witted and acidic songs he ever wrote. Join Dan, Mike, Rich, and returning guest Libby Cudmore as we discuss Zevon and his cast of psychopaths, mercenaries, screwups, and lycanthropes.NOTE: There's some strong language and dark subject matter in here, so be mindful of that if there's anyone around who shouldn't be hearing it. Warren Zevon has been finally been nominated to enter The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.Zevon is truly the only class of '23 inductee I truly give a damn about with the exception of George Micheal whom I feel is one hell of a great vocalist and Willie Nelson who is.......well, Willie Nelson.Warren's induction could assist his estate in many ways, including providing the grand finale to getting his deserved bio film made.Zevon was so much more than some Rock and Roll singer/ songwriter, Werewolf or Excitable Boy.He was The Hunter S. Thompson of Popular music. Warren was dangerous, aggressive, poetic, eclectic, loving, politically astute, fragile and as brilliant as a huge comet soaring through the night, Accidentally Like A Martyr. It took way too long to give him his due primarily because Jan Wenner and his corporate Hall are too busy pandering to an expanded base and are leaving a trail of forgotten giants in the mist of the money they require to remain relevant.Zevons strengths exceed or are on par with most who have contributed to the history of popular music. His Ride's Here at last.Next year, I can only hope that with the continued inclusion of vital figures from varied musical art forms, the Hall can understand why Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra and John Coltrane should be considered next. All music is a Love Supreme. Get it?

Waddy Wachtel is one of the most well-known and respected performers in the music industry. His career as a guitarist, producer and composer has spanned many decades. From his early beginnings in the L.A. music scene in the 1970's playing with such artists as the Everly Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Don Henley and Jackson Browne - to playing and writing with Keith Richards in the X-Pensive Winos - to his recent work as musical director, lead guitarist and vocalist for Stevie Nicks - he's ventured into such creative fields as composing his own songs and writing musical scores for films.Waddy was born ready....... Ready to Rock It Up! Following Waddy through his musical career, which is an on-going project, is an exploration into the history of Rock 'n' Roll itself. It's also a great example of how one man continues to keep Rock in his soul and gives his music continuously and creatively. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Waddy discusses his 50 year relationship with Stevie Nicks - from their collaboration on the Buckingham Nicks album released in 1973 to his role as Stevie's musical director and guitarist on her most recent tour. We also dive into his early career with the Everly Brothers, working with Warren Zevon on Excitable Boy and penning the track “Werewolves of London." Waddy's projects and relationships over the decades would ultimately pave the way to his current group, The Immediate Family, a tight knit group of iconic session musicians that are still touring and putting out albums to this day.Below is a link to The Immediate Family's remaining tour dates as well as the music video for their latest single, "Toughest Girl in Town":Tour Dates: https://www.immediatefamilyband.com/tourThe Toughest Girl In Town - YouTube Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVQLZIRfLjUDon't forget to follow me on Instagram at @la_woman_rocks or on Facebook at My Rock MomentWaddy Wachtel photo credit: Jay Gilbert

Bruce Springsteen called him “one of the great, great American songwriters”, Jackson Browne hailed him as “the first and foremost proponent of song noir”, and Stephen King once said that if he could write like him, he “would be a happy guy”. The list of artists that lined up to appear on his records include Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Dave Gilmour and Emmylou Harris. So how is it that most people, if they have heard of Warren Zevon at all, know him only as “that Werewolves' guy”? This book goes beyond that solitary hit single to examine all aspects of Zevon's multifaceted, five-decade career, from his beginnings in the slightly psychedelic folk duo Lyme and Cybelle, through to his commercial breakthrough in the late Seventies with ‘Excitable Boy', his critically acclaimed late Eighties comeback ‘Sentimental Hygiene', his decline into cult obscurity, and his triumphant if heart-breaking final testament, ‘The Wind', released just prior to his death in 2003. Along the way the reader will discover one of rock's consummate balladeers, as well as a cast of characters including doomed drug dealers, psychopathic adolescents, outlaws of the Old West, BDSM fetishists, ghostly gunslingers, an unfeasibly large assembly of apes, and, yes, lycanthropes unleashed on the streets of London.Peter Gallagher is the author of Marc Bolan, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and T. Rex: Every Album, Every Song, a previous volume in Sonicbond's “On Track” series. He is a regular contributor to Shindig! magazine and his fiction has appeared in Writing Magazine and The London Reader. His next book will be “Kiss in the 1970s”, also for Sonicbond, and he is working on a novel set in the Weimar Republic, which he hopes will see publication some time before the cows come home.

Ah-hooo!!
Warren Zevon, Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen, REM, Fleetwood Mac, Welcome to Episode #12 coming to you live from the former site of Riverwood Garbage Tip in Sydney Australia. Conveniently located down Wiggs Road behind the Housing Commission Estate is the beautiful restoration that has taken place here on Salt Pan Creek Reserve. We have sat right next to the methane gas pipe outlet and we're enjoying that sweet sweet aroma with a view over the Salt Pan Creek. Mick has been scavenging around down on the creek and has dragged up an old Woollies shopping trolley in remarkably good condition. And it's great to see all the kiddies out here playing on the beautiful grassed area here.Mick has been listening to Kina Grannis, who does a lovely, moody version of Elvis' "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You" . The Phatman has been listening to Neil Young's "Lotta Love", by Nicolette Larson. Nicolette did a lot of work with Neil Young but unfortunately died from an overdose of paracetamol. Feature Item: Warren Zevon – More About this Very Excitable Boy There's so much to his story that we needed to split him over 2 episodes. The story of Zevon, hailed by Bruce Springsteen as “one of the great, great American songwriters”, is like a Greek tragedy, where everything that could happen to him, happened - and it was all his own fault! Zevon, an American based in LA, was a musician's songwriter. His songs seemed simple but were masterpieces of technique. He worked with key artists, like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, REM, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. He was a drunk, by his own admission, who damned his own career when he went up to the publisher of Rolling Stone and told him a few alcohol-fuelled home truths, and got banned from the magazine as a result.Live, he wasn't afraid of baring his soul to his audience, once saying, “I'd prefer you didn't dance; these songs are kind of personal”; or wryly introducing a song, “Here's a song that brings back a lot of memories. For me, anyway.”His songwriting is full of characters such as Roland, a mercenary who ends up as a vengeful ghost searching for the “man who done him in”. Or Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, a boxer who killed his opponent in a match. Or outlaws Frank & Jesse James."Werewolves of London" shows Zevon's humour with a werewolf "with a Chinese menu in his hand / Gonna get a big dish of beef chow mein”, and "drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vic's / His hair was perfect”, all set to an oft-sampled jaunty piano rhythm. On top of this, his love songs were often achingly beautiful. Songs such as "Reconsider Me”, for Crystal, his ex-wife and the love of his life; “Hasten down the wind” - “She's so many women, he can't find the one who was his friend.” You can always count on finding great lyrics. In “Desperadoes Under the Eaves”, he states that “if California slides into the ocean / Like the mystics and statistics say it will/I predict this motel will be standing/Until I pay my bill”; in “Bed of Coals”, he's "too old to die young / and too young to die now” and in "Poisonous Lookalike", he's “so confused /(he) can't tell the salt from the wound” and refers to “Little Miss Gun-to-a-Knife-Fight". We make no apology for being Zevon fan-boys. You don't need to lock Zevon to a date or particular album. In this streaming age, you can just pick a random point and listen to a great bunch of songs. Christopher done goofed and thought his pick this time was for April 1, so we're coming at you a little late. Allow us to make up for it by discussing Warren Zevon's third album, "Excitable Boy". There's a lot of sandwich talk up front, as well as talk of Bob Seger's teeth. Jake O'Donnell (https://distantsigns.bandcamp.com/) joins us.

My shit's fucked up--Warren Zevon On this episode of Remainders, our hosts discuss the life and dirty times of Warren Zevon. A gifted songwriter, outsider, cynic, and romantic, Zevon remains an underappreciated rock and roll legend. More than merely the singer behind ‘Werewolves of London,’ Zevon mastered the art of ‘song noir’ and was admired by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Martin Scorsese and countless other artists. Behind the critical accolades, he spent a lifetime struggling against alcoholism and drug addiction. His obsession with death came to light in 2002 when Zevon was diagnosed with mesothelioma and was given only months to live. Despite his death sentence, Zevon set out to make the best album of his career. Join us as we pay tribute to the legend. more: www.remainderspod.com/season-1
