[REWIND] How To Build a Creative Career Brick by Brick feat. Nathan Sawaya

Nathan Sawaya is a world-renowned brick artist who left his career as a corporate lawyer to follow his childhood passion—creating art out of LEGO bricks. In this episode, Nathan shares how law school gave him the critical thinking and risk-assessment skills to launch a creative business, why he let his law license expire, and what it really takes to bet on yourself. His story is a powerful reminder that you can build your dream life, one brick—and one bold decision—at a time.Lawyer Side HustlesWhat started as a creative outlet—experimenting with LEGO bricks after long days at the office—eventually became Nathan's full-time career and artistic identity. He didn't wait for permission or a perfect plan; he started small, shared his work online, and let passion guide the pivot. When his website crashed from too many visitors, he took it as a sign and made the leap.“I didn't want that safety net... I let my license expire and just went for it,” shares Nathan Sawaya in Episode 188 of You Are a Lawyer.Today, he's not just a brick artist—he's a bestselling author, international exhibitor, and producer on LEGO Masters. His exhibitions tour the world, and his book The Art of the Brick: A Life in LEGO reveals the thought and emotion behind his sculptures. His story is the ultimate side hustle success—proof that your 5–9 can become your life's work when you dare to go all in.LISTEN TO LEARNWhy trusting your creative instincts can lead to unexpected successHow law school prepares you for entrepreneurship—even in the artsWhat it really takes to walk away from a traditional career with no safety netWE ALSO DISCUSSThe importance of identifying which risks are worth takingWhat lawyers can learn from artists (and vice versa)Why letting go of “the backup plan” might be your best move yetJoin the FREE mailing list!Get behind-the-scenes content from You Are A Lawyer. 1) Visit www.youarealawyer.com2) Add your email address to the Subscribe pop-up box OR3) Enter your email address on the right side of the screen4) Get emails from me (I won't fill your inbox with junk)!Interact with You Are A LawyerKyla Denanyoh hosts the You Are A Lawyer podcast. Follow the podcast:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@youarealawyerWebsite: https://www.youarealawyer.com

Cara Davis Little works in employment policy during the day, and plans weddings and podcasts during her free time. In Episode 74, find out how Cara created a career she loves because while Cara can do A LOT, she cannot do it all. Advertiser: Journey and Practice offers The Heart-Centered Lawyers Membership, a community of law students, grads, and lawyers who participate in self-care activities to improve their legal journey and practice. Visit https://journeyandpractice.com/services and enroll with code "podcast" for a special rate.Cara Davis Little's BackgroundCara Davis Little initially went to law school to become a civil rights lawyer. After working in BigLaw (and hating it) Cara decided to work in the public sector. When Cara left BigLaw and began working in the public sector, specifically in employment relations law, Cara began to thrive. Lawyer Side HustlesCara Davis Little was a host of the podcast Millennial Lov3: Sex, Love and I'm Selfish AF! and the first podcaster that Kyla knew. But also, Cara was a young, Black woman who bought a microphone and had the audacity to be vulnerable with the world. Podcasts were still new in 2017 and until the final episode in 2019, the podcast was enjoyed and loved by every millennial who laughed, danced, and understood the podcast. After planning her own wedding in 2019, Cara missed the organization, planning, and logistics skills needed to plan a wedding. Cara knew that she wanted to take her organization skills and creativity into a new route, so she opened Wimberly & Co. Although Wimberly & Co. is based in Maryland, Cara Davis Little offers wedding planning nationwide, depending on her schedule and the client's needs. What Can I Do With My Law Degree?Even though her first jobs out of law school were traditional, boring, high-paying roles, Cara Davis Little is adamant that money is nothing more than a tool. There is a lot of pressure on first-generation lawyers, like Cara, to be an example for their families or to feel “lucky” to have a job and earn so much money. However, your career (and where you spend a lot of your time) is worth more than a check. Cara believes you should explore your interests before law school and create a career and life that you love… even if that means wedding planning. You May Watch this Interview on YouTube: https://youtu.be/UV_q2XzpvhcJoin the FREE mailing list!Get behind-the-scenes content from Kyla. 1) Visit www.youarealawyer.com2) Add your email address to the Subscribe pop-up box OR3) Enter your email address on the right side of the screen4) Get emails from me (I won't fill your inbox with junk)!YOU MAY ALSO LIKE THESE EPISODESSuperwoman is a Myth! Some sculptors use bronze, others prefer marble. But Nathan Sawaya is a world-famous artist who sculpts with LEGO. From a very young age, Nathan loved building with those colorful toy bricks. He built skyscrapers, spaceships, and even a pet Lego dog. But while he was playing, Nathan also built his imagination, his creativity , and even a new career. In this episode of “Once Upon a Playtime,” we'll learn about how Nathan went from lawyer to full-time LEGO artist, how construction toys advance STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) skills, and how playing can increase motivation in children.

Nathan Sawaya is one of the best-known LEGO Master Builders – people who can recreate just about anything out of LEGOs. While he's worked with major franchises like DC, creating life sized superheroes, he's also an artist who makes original sculptures out of LEGOs, including human figures that seem to be grappling with existential angst. I talk with Nathan about how making these LEGO figures has been a way to work through anxiety and depression. We also discuss why he left a law career to become a professional artist, and the practical lessons he's learned along the way -- from when to glue the bricks together, to how to get his giant sculptures out the door. For a hot second this episode was gonna be called Nathan Sawaya: "From Lawyering to Legoing," and as much as that description of Nathan Sawaya and his life is accurate, it does not capture what we hope to convey in this episode.  Yes he was a NYC corporate lawyer and a quick study of his work will tell you "yes", Nathan uses Lego bricks to create large sculptural work, but one will also find that amazing, emotive and powerful works of fine art step immediately to the fore.  It will be quite easy to understand why he receives national acclaim and CNN referred to it as one of the top-ten must-see exhibitions globally. In this episode we hear of Nathan's unique journey from art student, to corporate lawyer and back to artist.  He shares about how creativity was essential in helping him through the hardships of being in an unfulfilling job and career, but also how it helped him through mental illness (Depression). We learn too how more recently he is using his art to tackle issues dear to him like climate change and extinction through a collaboration between he and photographer, Dean West called PERNiCiEM.   Yes we learn about the the process and the particulars of working with Legos, but we learn of some angles to that work that are surprising and quite refreshing. Its a joy learning of the universality and approacability of Nathan's string grabbing and kite flying via the Lego brick.   Web Presence for Nathan:  http://www.nathansawaya.com/biography.html                                                              https://www.brickartist.com/                                                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeTY70VPAg0 Kites and Strings Website: https://www.kitesandstrings.com/Facebook: @kitesandstringspodcastTwitter:   @KitesandstringsInstagram:  @Kites_and_stringsemail: Kitesandstringspodcast@gmail.comOur theme music is by Harrison Amer, and all other original music by purple planet music at https://www.purple-planet.com.   Our logo-design is by Cole Monroe at Blue Stag Creative.

Nathan Sawaya was a corporate lawyer for five years and spent his evenings working with clay, paints, and other materials to release his creativity.  Eventually, Nathan picked up LEGO®-brand bricks and created an apple, then other items in his apartment and finally a sculpture.   Nathan’s talent with these bricks led Nathan to create a website to display his artwork. After his website, Brick Artist, crashed from too many visits, Nathan stopped practicing law to become an artist full time. Nathan Sawaya’s sculptures have been displayed in many art museums, Nathan has created LEGO Oscars®  statues for the 2015 Academy Awards, Nathan is a consulting producer on the LEGO Master show, and Nathan has founded The Art Revolution Foundation.  Nathan has been commissioned numerous times to create unique and incredible art from LEGO-brand bricks. While many people are familiar with LEGO-brand bricks, Nathan Sawaya has a partnership with LEGO that allows the company to send him bricks in specific hues and designs.  In his California studio, Nathan keeps at least 10 million LEGO-brand bricks available to him.  Nathan credits his law degree for preparing him to negotiate with large toy manufacturers and agents for his commissioned art.  Nathan Sawaya was licensed in New York.  Connect with Nathan at www.brickartist.com.Follow the You Are A Lawyer podcast on Twitter @YouAreA_Lawyer, Instagram @youarealawyer and on LinkedIn.  Follow the podcast host, Kyla Denanyoh, on Instagram @kjd796. This episode is sponsored by Attornneed (www.attornneed.com).

I thought it was so cool that this toy could interact with all my other toys. Today I’m talking to a truly unique artist whose medium is Lego: Adam Ward. Adam makes sculptures and murals, does commissions, and worked on the Lego Batman movie. He has a series with Soul Pancake on YouTube called Brick x Brick. He played with Lego a lot when he was younger but never dreamed it could turn into a career. But with a kickstarted campaign and some great connections, he has made with happen. Today Adam is offering us his insights into Lego world. He’s talking about his artistic process, and how he started to make money with his Lego work. It’s a pretty fascinating conversation - Adam’s story goes to show that truly anything is possible. It’s so fun to invite people to interact with art, to mess with it to put their own spin on it. Some things we learn in this podcast: How Adam started working with Lego [4:00] Adam reached out to Lego and was turned down [9:15] How Adam used Kickstarter to launch his company [10:00] The challenges of paving your own way to a career in art [16:40] How Adam shifted his perspective on abundance and money [18:20] How Peace and Bricks came about [19:50] Transitioning to a career as a Lego artist  [25:35] How Adam got involved with the Lego movies [29:20] What Adam’s creative process looks like [34:15] Some crazy facts about Lego [40:20] Even pluralized, it’s Lego [41:10] Learn more about Lego subculture [42:40] Where he wants to go with his career [50:30] One of Adam’s dream projects [52:00] How he handles highs and lows [53:30] What routines help Adam with his productivity [56:30] Links mentioned: Check out Brick Link Watch Brick x Brick with Soul Pancake Check out Peace and Bricks Watch the Lego Brickumentary Check out Nathan Sawaya and Sean Kenney Read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran Read David McRaney’s books You Are Not So Smart and You Are Now Less Dumb Join the Nion Life Community Music Credit: Purple Crazy by Chex Connect with  Instagram | Twitter | Website

Nathan Sawaya, the first ever to take LEGO into the art world, has become famous worldwide for his extraordinary, one-of-a-kind exhibits.  However, becoming a legendary artist did not come easily as he had to take some major risks to live his dream. While a NYC corporate lawyer, Sawaya came home each night and used his evenings to hone his LEGO building skill sets.  When his website featuring his artwork crashed, he knew he had to walk away from his day job to pursue his dream of becoming a LEGO artist. In this episode, we talk about the challenges of leaving a secure job to go after the things he was truly passionate about.  In addition, we touch on the following topic areas: The progression of living a dream Why people encourage you to settle The process of creating What it takes to be great This episode is all about inspiring you to go out and pursue your dreams.  Find the thing you love and be willing to take risks to chase it down. If you enjoy the episode, please be sure to share it with friends so we can help them reach their full potential and make the world a MUCH cooler place!  Also, be sure to get a copy of my "Impressions: The Power of Personal Branding in Living an Extraordinary Life" book on Amazon.

Welcome to episode #453 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. I can't remember when I first heard of Nathan Sawaya, but I knew his work long before I knew the artist's name. That's what happens when you see a sculpture made of LEGO. That sculpture stopped me dead in my tracks. It was very evocative... almost disturbing. Yes, those same little bricks that get jammed into our feet at two in the morning when we're trying to get a glass of water from the kitchen. Was someone making a joke? Was this serious art? A great piece of art does this. It moves you. Emotionally. Physically. It gets you thinking. After you experience it, you can't stop thinking about it. Delving online to discover who had created this piece - and if there was any more where that one had come from - you discover Nathan Sawaya. Sawaya was a corporate attorney in New York City, until he decided to leave that life to become a full-time artist working with LEGO bricks as his medium. It's an amazing journey and a fascinating story. Enjoy the conversation... Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #453 - Host: Mitch Joel. Running time: 42:04.
