Vitaly Beckman, a Vancouver-based illusionist, recently accomplished something only four other performers have ever done: stump famed American magicians Penn and Teller with an illusion… for the third time. Beckman wowed the legendary duo in an episode of their long-running reality TV series, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, at the Las Vegas theatre bearing their name. They awarded him a trophy before inviting him back to perform on April 26 as the closing act for their own live show. Beckman has been pursing magic and illusion for nearly three decades, ever since he got hooked by watching David Copperfield on his parents' television while growing up in Haifa. But like many Jewish immigrant families, his Soviet-born parents wanted their son to go into a more stable and respectable profession, so Beckman did a mechanical engineering degree at the Technion, Israel's university specializing in science and engineering, before coming to Canada and pursuing his passion for fine art, painting and illusion. And after performances in Times Square and off-Broadway—including a benefit for Ukrainian Jewish orphans with Sylvester Stallone—Beckman is back home in Canada these days, testing out some new material. As he tells Ellin Bessner on The CJN Daily, illusion and magic may be just the thing to help heal divisions and strife during our turbulent times. Penn Jillette and his partner Teller have created one of the most successful and lucrative careers in show business by using mind bending effects and revealing the secrets behind their magic tricks. Teller is the short one with sleight of hand who doesn't speak. Penn is 6 feet 6 inches tall. He's the juggler who talks and plays the double bass. They're the longest-running headliners in the history of Las Vegas and they have a TV show called Penn and Teller: Fool Us. In his spare time, Penn Jillette writes books. His latest is a novel called Felony Juggler. We talk about politics, why he thinks of himself as a professional atheist and how he lost 100 pounds in 3 months. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Lucy Little and Jackie Schwartz. Audio production is by Nick Ciavatta.
Eric Leclerc (pronounced le clair) is a very funny guy. To me, his style is much like that of Las Vegas magician, Mike Hammer, with a quick wit and clever retorts while maintaining mystery at the core of each trick. He has appeared or starred in over a half dozen television shows such as Brain Games, Tricked!, Big Trick Energy, among others. He has also appeared on Penn & Teller Fool Us where he took home the Fooler trophy. Earlier this year, Eric hosted the Saturday evening galas at the Blackpool magic convention and received mixed reviews. View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize Eric Leclerc has been “on the road” with his school shows across Canada presenting his magic in French to French speaking schools. He joins us this week between shows as he chats about booking the tour, his philosophy on magic competitions, and of course, his thoughts on his recent performance as the compere (emcee) of the Saturday evening galas at Blackpool 2025. From humble beginnings as a party princess (non-copyright, of course) to dazzling audiences on stages worldwide, Katrina shares how she crafted her unique magical style, where her spellbinding trick ideas come from, and the challenges she's overcome as a woman in the world of magic. We talk about her experience appearing on the hit show Penn and Teller: Fool Us, working with children's icon Blippi, and her role in Chappell Roan's music video Red Wine Supernova. Also this week, Jamie and Tom dive into the world of Married At First Sight's Jacqui Burford and the story of her allegedly sending herself money. Tom shares how a quirky “decorative piece” at work helped him make a new friend, and the boys ask the question: is Joe Hendry becoming the new Rickrolling? Things take a surprising turn as the lads go off on a tangent about gloryholes (yes, really), and Tom can't stop raving about Boa Kong's performance on Britain's Got Talent. We also hear about Tom's wholesome trip to the Natural History Museum in London, while Jamie gives his thoughts after watching Thunderbolts*. Niagara Falls, the LSD teepee, & the comedy magic wing of the National Comedy Center, with Penn & Teller: Fool Us host Brooke Burke.
My friends, today's guest is Bruce Gold. He is by far one of the greatest comedy magicians today. He has performed all over the country as both a magician and a stand-up comedian, and has performed in various venues in Las Vegas, aboard the world's largest cruise ships, and he's a regular at the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. Bruce has also had many television appearances, including Oprah, Full House, Masters of Illusion, and Penn & Teller Fool Us. You might remember Bruce from his award winning “Got Milk” commercial, where he plays the magician at a retirement home birthday party and makes the elderly people's milk disappear. (Spoiler alert: it doesn't end well for him!) Bruce is also the host of his own TV talkshow called The Bruce Gold Show, a weekly comedy, variety talkshow with fun and fascinating interviews presented with family friendly humor. Bruce Gold was an absolute blast to talk to. He was very warm and friendly, and he shared so much knowledge about the art of magic and comedy. I felt like I was listening to a very wise teacher. This was such a fun time, and I'm happy to share this fun time with you, my friends! You can watch his demo video here, which includes clips of some of his performances as well as his famous "Got Milk?" commercial.
Originally released May 31, 2021. When Adobe announced it would be discontinuing Flash in 2017, developers started replacing it with newer, more robust software. But one railroad system in Dalian, China didn't get the memo. When it was finally globally disabled in January of 2021, the entire railroad was disabled. In this episode, I get nostalgic about the good ole' days of flash animation, then tell the story about how it affected the railroad. Then we chat with Erik Tait, from Ships of the Northern Fleet and Penn & Teller Fool Us for the Quick Quiz!
