I'm Falling in Like Slowly with the New Z7. A Nikon Z7 II Review

The Phoblographer

For more stories like this, please subscribe to The Phoblographer. I have been a Nikonian photographer for more than a decade. Yet, after trying the company's first full-frame mirrorless, I chose to stick with a DSLR. I simply didn't have the confidence in the Z7 and Z6 autofocus system and lack of ability to record to two cards at once. That's exactly what Nikon focused on in the second generation, however. The Nikon Z7 II keeps much of the first generation intact but steps up the autofocus, adds a second card slot, and moves to dual processors. Then, there's also the price bump of a few hundred bucks. So, has Nikon earned my trust back with the Nikon Z7 II? I didn't fall in love instantly like I had hoped, but gradually, the Z7 II earned my confidence. The Z7 II isn't perfect, and it doesn't outperform the competition. But, it's a camera many photographers could still manage to fall in love with, especially paired with a Z system lens. Table of Contents Too Long, Didn't Read Pros and Cons Pros Cons Gear Used Innovations Tech Specs Ergonomics Build Quality Autofocus Ease of Use Metering Image Quality High ISO Images RAW File Versatility Extra Image Samples Edited Unedited Conclusion Likes Dislikes Is the Nikon Z7 II Worth it? Too Long, Didn't Read The Nikon Z7 II corrects much of what disappointed me in the first version, including a much better autofocus system and dual card slots. The Z7 II is beautiful inside and out: it takes beautiful pictures, and it's also beautifully designed. But, while finally competitive, there are a few annoyances to contend with. Pros and Cons Pros A much-improved autofocus system Durable magnesium alloy build with weather-sealing Image quality is great, especially with native Z lenses In-body image stabilization Dual card slots with XQD/CF Express and SD Cons While improved, the autofocus isn't as good as Canon's R series Eyepiece rubber sometimes blocks the eye sensor Viewfinder blacks out Gear Used I used the Nikon Z7 II with the Z 50mm f1.2 S, the Z 70-200mm f2.8 VR S, and the Z 24-200mm f4-6.3 VR. I used the Wandrd Sling strap, as well as the Wandrd PRVKE II and Lowepro Flipside backpacks. Innovations The Nikon Z7 II is more about fixing complaints about the first generation than crazy innovation. It adds the dual card slots, improves autofocus performance, and upgrades video to 4K at 60 fps (93 percent crop). The biggest change is the move up from a single processor to two, which improves performance. Tech Specs These Nikon Z7 II tech specs are a shortened version of the full specifications available from Nikon USA: Sensor: 45.7-megapixel full-frame CMOS RAW: 12 or 14 bit Two card slots with XQD/CF Express, SD EVF: .5 inch, 3690k dot 3.2 inch 2,100K dot touchscreen with tilt Shutter: 30 sec. to 1/8000, Flash sync up to 1/200 10 fps burst ISO: 64-25,600 (32-102,400 extended) AF: Hybrid phase-detection/contrast with AF assist beam, -3 to +19 detection range, 493 focus points 5-axis sensor-shift stabilization Video: 4K at 60 fps (93 percent crop of the sensor), up to 29 minutes 59 second recording time Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Li-ion battery rated at 360 to 440 depending on settings Weighs 21.7 ounces 5.3 x 4 x 2.8 inches Ergonomics Little has changed on the exterior of the second-generation Z7. Save for the little “II” in the corner on the camera name, it would be difficult to tell the two apart at a glance. The biggest exception? The second generation has both the XQD or CF Express slot and an SD slot. That's a must-have for working professionals who need to back up their images in the field. The Z7 II weighs 21.7 ounces, which is significantly lighter than the Nikon D850. It's also more compact, yet the grip is almost the same size, so it doesn't have the uncomfortable hold of a compact camera. A long-time Nikon DSLR user, the control scheme on the Z7 II feels like home. The top houses an LCD screen. Dual control wheels flank the shutter, on/off, record, ISO, and exposure compensation on the ...

In support of the 2021 OPTIC Outdoor, Photo/Video, Travel Imaging Conference, to be held online July 11-12, 2021, the B&H Photography Podcast team conducted our own photo walk, much like they do as part of the OPTIC Conference events. For this episode, we took our cameras and microphones to the beautiful Elizabeth Park Rose Garden in West Hartford, Connecticut and with Allan as the group's leader and Jason and I as participants, we completed several photo challenges and practiced our photography and storytelling techniques. As this is a virtual and audio photo walk, we encourage our listeners to participate on your own time and in convenient locations, such as a local park or even your backyard.  The episode is designed so that the listener can pause the recording after the challenge has been assigned and complete it on their own. You can also just listen as we work through our assigned shots with Allan fielding our questions. The gear we use is our own, nothing fancy, and the various challenges can be completed with almost any camera and lens combination. For my part, I am using a full frame Nikon DSLR with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens and a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens and Jason is using a full frame Sony Alpha mirrorless camera    with a  Sony wide-angle lens and the Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 lens.  Assigned shots incorporate wide-angle and telephoto perspectives and utilize basic photo techniques, controlling aperture and shutter speed for varied affects, and applying ideas on composition, shadow, detail, and narrative. There is even a macro photography bonus challenge at the end of the episode, so bring that lens too if you have it. We look forward to “hanging out” with our listeners in this virtual setting as we do to soon returning to “IRL” photo walks with old and new friends. With that in mind, check out the OPTIC Conference events page with two-days of online presentations, and register for the free conference hosted by B&H Photo and sponsored by Canon, Nikon, Sony, Sigma, Godox and many others. Photograph © Jason Tables Challenges: Flower Challenge: Using a wide-angle lens make a photo of your garden as it sits within its landscape, a landscape photo with the garden as its primary feature. Then, using the same lens, make a photo of an individual flower, perhaps in relation to the other flowers around it. Water Challenge: Using the focal length of your choice experiment with shutter speed to blur the movement of water in a pleasing way. Also, make a photo of the reflections and refractions in your body of water. Architecture Challenge: Tell the story of a building or structure in three photographs: a wide shot, a detail and a third photo of your choice. Remember, tell the story of the building. Bonus Challenges: Use a macro lens to make a detail-rich close-up of a flower OR with a telephoto focal length, take a photo of an animal or bird in its natural environment, ideally demonstrating behavior.

He is a 21-year-old amateur astrophotographer and mechanical engineering student based in Alabama in the United States. He has loved space for as long as he can remember but didn't get into astronomical imaging and astronomy until the summer of 2017 when he bought his Nikon DSLR camera. Eye-catching and grotesque are words not often placed together, but those accurate descriptors are part of the charm and beauty in the still life and food photography of Emma Ressel. Ressel joins us on this episode of the B&H Photography Podcast to talk about her work, which takes inspiration from, among other things, Dutch Master paintings and her own upbringing in Maine. We discuss with Ressel the evolution of her work and how she attempts to balance the genres of food photography and still life. Many of her images contain aspects of decay and death, and in her personal fine art photography, food is one way to address these topics. She also is a commercial photographer of food, wine, and still life work commissioned by New York Magazine, Refinery29, and other publications and clients. Ressel works with both a 4 x 5" Toya medium format film camera and with a Nikon DSLR, and we find out how and why she chooses which system to utilize. We also talk about her varied lighting choices and how she came to food photography not knowing much about professional workflows and food stylists and how that may have helped her define her look. She is very hands-on with her work, and we discuss sourcing items as diverse as coral snakes and pig’s heads. We also consider issues of waste and overconsumption and how her work attempts to deal with those ideas within an industry that uses food for purposes not directly related to human sustenance. Ressel also tells us about an inspiring artists residency in which she tackled the subject of a decaying whale carcass. This is a very well-rounded conversation, at ease discussing the technical issues of using a view camera as easily as literary inspiration, and how to walk the fine line between working as a commercial food photographer and pushing the genre to uncomfortable new places. Join us for a listen and have a look at Ressel’s Artfare page to see her larger prints. Guest: Emma Ressel Photograph © Emma Ressel

A Photographer's Life™ interview with award-winning architecture photographer Brian Dressler. Brian is a veteran photographer based in Columbia, South Carolina, and a long-time member of The Association of Independent Architectural Photographers™ (AIAP). In this episode's interview by AIAP director Alan Blakely, Brian discusses a wide range of subjects relating to his 42-year career as a professional photographer, including: • Brian's education in photography, his mentors and influences, and his advice for starting a photography business. • Brian's early photography assignments, including product illustration and corporate photography. • His introduction to the photography of architecture and interiors. • The challenges and techniques of shooting architecture on film, lighting for architecture, film processing, and production, and working with large format cameras. • The hybrid era of using both film and digital formats, including scanning, Photoshop processing, and large format printing. • The professional transition to digital format, including camera and lens choices and his progression to using Nikon DSLR camera with PC (perspective control) Nikkor lenses. Like all professional architecture photographers, Brian routinely corrects distortion and converging verticals in the camera. • Techniques for photography of architecture using digital format, including layering, compositing, and HDR. Brian also discloses his technique for his famous city skyline photographs. • A conversation about lens choices in architecture and interior photography. Brian expresses his preference for longer rather than wider lenses when shooting architectural subjects. Brian and Alan discuss their common philosophy about the aesthetics of lens choices and their effect on the viewer. • Brian divulges his formula for cost-sharing and licensing among multiple parties. Brian's simple formula allows an architect, builder, designer, etc., to share costs for photography of a project and obtain a non-transferable license to use the photos as long as they wish. • Brian is a stickler for licensing his photography and offers some valuable wisdom regarding copyright protection. Brian advocates registering all professional photographs with the United States Copyright office. This allows the photographer to easily recover damages in the event that his photographs are used without licensing or consent. Brian's photography can be viewed at his website: www.briandressler.com. Brian can also be reached by telephone at (803) 254-7171. The Association of Independent Architectural Photographers™ was established in 2001 and is an Internet-based trade association with one primary purpose: To promote the professional success of established independent architectural photographers. Membership in the AIAP is open to full-time professional architectural photographers. On this episode #7 “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast episode for October 2017, Scott and Marco discuss these new products and mirrorless topics:   This show is sponsored by B&H: bit.ly/bhphotodeals   Scott has bought the iPhone 8 Plus and tells us what he thinks about the camera and features. https://bhpho.to/2ziapxR   After using the Olympus TG-5 for a month, Scott shares how he likes using this camera. https://bhpho.to/2ziapxR   GoPro announced the new Hero 6 Black camera. The action camera now features 4K 60P video, 12MP Photos at 30 fps, has enhanced dynamic range, improved image stabilization and better low light performance. https://bhpho.to/2z2dp0i   GoPro also added a cool new 360° action camera to their setup. The GoPro 5.2K 360° Fusion camera captures 18MP still images with a 360° field of view. It has a gimbal-like image stabilization and 360° microphone built in. And the overcapture mode creates some really cool effects. https://shop.gopro.com/cameras/fusion/CHDHZ-101.html   Fuji adds two new lenses to their GFX medium format camera lens lineup. The GF 45mm f2.8 R WR and GF 80mm  f2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro lens both feature Dust & Weather sealing and have Nano GI coating. The 80mm Macro has a 1:1 magnification and also features a Fluorine coating on the front element to make it less prone to smudging - a feature that we would like to see on all lenses in the future. GF 45mm f2.8 R WR: https://bhpho.to/2zjBEbs GF 80mm  f2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro: https://bhpho.to/2zhrzLY   Fuji is running a GFX promotion in Europe. Save up to EUR 1.300 if you purchase a GFX plus lens between October 1st, 2017 and January 15th, 2018. And this time you don’t have to trade in a qualifying camera. https://bhpho.to/2z1Mguu   Fujifilm will soon offer a software called Fujifilm X Raw Studio that will enable you to use the nice in-camera Raw to jpg engine from your Mac or PC when you attach the camera via USB to your computer. The software should be available in late November 2017. http://www.fujifilm.com/news/n170907_08.html   Profoto is expanding their Air Remote TTL and HSS capable wireless flash transmitters to work with many mirrorless cameras. They now offer versions for mirrorless Olympus, Sony and are about to release a version that works with Fuji cameras. https://bhpho.to/2zhEMVa   Sony has released a FW update for their a9 mirrorless camera. FW version 1.10 improves image quality and fixes some problems like disappearing RAW images when transferring images to certain smartphones. https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/e-mount-body-ilce9-series/ilce-9   Marco shares a feature from the Nikon D850 that he would like to see incorporated in future mirrorless cameras, too. Nikon offers a film scan adapter that not only allows you to scan your film negatives in high quality with a single exposure, it also converts the negative image into a positive straight inside the camera. Two thumbs up from Marco for this feature. https://bhpho.to/2z26Gn5 Mirrorless question of the month: Hi Scott and Marco, I am a long time listener of your podcasts and have made the full switch from Nikon DSLR’s to Fuji mirrorless cameras (sorry Scott) ;) last year. I’m currently using a Fuji X-T2 and X-T 20 and have the XF 50-140mm f2.8 lens for my zoom work. Inspired by Scott’s recent PPN - More Gear Show episode about TC’s, I am now considering the purchase of a 1.4x or 2x TC. But a photographer friend has told me, that TC are not a good idea on crop sensor cameras, as there is already an artificial crop happening on the sensor. And the IQ will degrade drastically stronger than on a cropped FF camera. He suggests that I’d rather invest in the Fuji XF 100-400mm f4.5 - 5.6 lens. What do you think? Thanks so much for all of the great shows each month! Johan from Uppsala, Sweden We have a PPN Photo Podcast Network group at Flickr (click link) that is open to our listeners and photos taken with all mirrorless camera brands. If you want to join just let us know through the "request invitation" button on the group and drop us a quick line there. We'll add you to the group then. And please ask for the invite via the web browser and not via the Flickr App. The invite process via the app has not been working reliably. You can also submit an image using the Instagram hashtag #WeShootMirrorless   We have picked our monthly featured photographer and image from our Flickr groups. Our monthly We Shoot Mirrorless feature photo and photographer of the month is: Jose Matutina - “Fisherman by the Angry Sea” (click here) Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H without our link. And the more this link will be used to buy at B&H, the more giveaways we’ll be able to give back to our listeners through B&H. It really is a “win-win” situation :)   And please share this podcast with your friends and subscribe via iTunes. We would also love to get your feedback. Is there anything that you want us to cover on the show in the future? And we would appreciate if you could take a short moment to rate or post a quick review about our shows on iTunes.   For more information on Scott Bourne follow him on Twitter: @ScottBourne For more information on Marco Larousse follow him on Twitter: @HamburgCam   About this show: On the monthly #WeShootMirrorless episode of the “PPN - Photo Podcast Network” show, Scott and Marco will discuss news from the mirrorless camera world related to innovations, trends, gear and accessories. And they will introduce mirrorless camera brands by interviewing the respective managers of those manufacturers. They will also invite pro photographers who make their living working with mirrorless cameras to share some tips and tricks on their workflow.

The Digital Director is here! Digital Director is the only Apple Certified interface that helps you to intuitively manage the entire photo and video workflow via a tethered iPad solution with Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras. Complete and Intuitive Workflow Control Photographers and videographers can now enjoy a more detailed, enhanced control interface thanks to a much bigger and higher quality display: indeed, Digital Director turns the iPad Air in to an external monitor taking full advantage of its High Definition Retina Display. The dedicated Digital Director App enables all the key parameters of Canon and Nikon DSLRs to be monitored and dynamically modified in real time (Exposure, ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture, Manual Focus, WB, Image Quality, Focus Camera/Drive Modes, Battery status), allowing photographers and videographers to concentrate on creativity instead of settings. Shooting remotely via the iPad Retina Display, the App enables real time "Live View" monitoring and adjustments. The dynamic histogram and audio level display allows greater control, whilst the Focus control is guaranteed thanks to the Interactive Focus, which can be used to select the focus point anywhere on the screen. The digital zoom magnifies the selected focus point to ensure crisp accurate focus. Quick and Smart Check and Post-Production Thanks to Digital Director, users will have total control of their workload plus the possibility to download the images to the iPad and check the high-resolution files. All the characteristics of the image, such as the focus, can be checked simply using standard iPad ®gestures¯. Digital Director also allows users to intuitively manage post-production activities from the iPad: within the App, it is possible to work on the image, cropping and rotating it, modifying exposure, contrast and brightness, checking histogram and Exif information, rating and saving the image. Users will also have total control of their files, from image ratings to file organization (albums, shoot profiles and connection profiles). Immediate Contents Sharing Digital Director allows users to immediately share their images, direct to FTP, by E-mail and on social networks.

#089: The Unconventional Guide to Influence [Podcast]

Podcast – Ray Edwards

What if you could influence people before you even met them? Would that be a valuable skill in business? Not only is it possible, you can engineer it with intention. And you should. In today's episode, you'll discover:  The difference between strategic and tactical influence, and when to use each.  The three key factors we need whenever we feel we've heard a special calling from God.  My very favorite photography app.  And the always award-winning, much much more. Announcements: I am updating my copywriting course… win free access with your comments between now and Christmas. Seats available for Strategic & Tactical Influence (STI) — dates January 14-16 in Phoenix, AZ. Conferences where I will be attending and/or speaking: NMX, Jan 4-6, 2014, Las Vegas, NV Strategic Influence Jan 14-16, 2014, Phoenix, AZ NAMS 11 February 7-9, 2014, Atlanta, GA Social Media Marketing World, March 26-28, 2014, San Diego, CA “Permission to Prosper” April 8-10, 2014, Spokane, WA Tip Of The Week I've recently taken up photography as a hobby. My current cameras are my iPhone 5S, the Canon A1400, and an old Nikon DSLR that I'm borrowing from my son. My dream kit is a Sony NEX-7. But one thing I've learned is long before you need a new camera, you need better skill with the camera you have, and you need some finesse and how you process your photos after you take them. Which leads me to the fact that I own many, many photography apps. But the one that consistently produces the best results for me is snapseed. Even though it gets a lot of complaints, it seems fairly easy to use to me, and I have produced some pretty nice photos using. Above are three examples. Spiritual Foundations The key to taking a word from God in bringing it into manifestation usually lies at the intersection of three circles: Spirit, Soul, and Strategy.  The reason people are often disappointed when “God's word” doesn't come true for them might be because they've missed one of these three. Feature Segment: The Unconventional Guide to Influence What is influence? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary: “the power to change or affect someone or something : the power to cause changes without directly forcing them to happen.” When you have strategically crafted your influence in a particular sphere, you can affect change without direct communication. Change the atmosphere around people, and you change the atmosphere inside people. Get clarity on what outcomes you seek to achieve. Reverse engineer the required influence to produce the outcome. Discover who you have to become in order to exert such influence. Codify your wisdom in a way to is easy to distribute to other people; the most powerful way is to write a book. Practice and enhance your communication skills so that you are able to transmit your message in an effective, powerful, and memorable way. Become skilled in the science of causing your ideas to spread; in common parlance, we call this “marketing”. Develop an intentional process that causes others to want what you have; transform your ideas into cash. What To Do Now The development of the seven steps has both a Strategic and a Tactical component. At our three-day workshop in January, not coincidentally entitled Strategic and Tactical Influence we develop both of those components, and we work through all seven steps in the system, producing a distilled, Big-League Idea born out of your knowledge wisdom and experience… Developing this into a full-fledged outline for your Big-League Book (and even finishing the book, if you choose to opt for the upgrade)… Developing your talking points for media interviews, etc.… And devising a customized, intentional cash flow funnel for transmuting your ideas into income. The investment for this workshop is not cheap, but for the right person this is the bargain of the decade. We have a handful of seats left; if you would like to reserve one, if you are serious and you want to know more,  click here to fill out an application. If it looks like you might be a good fit for the workshop, we will get back in touch with you. If you enjoy the podcast, I would consider it a great favor if you subscribe (and leave a review) in iTunes. This helps new people discover the podcast. You can also find the podcast on Stitcher.
