Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is writer Genevieve Jenner, who's tilting the high school soda vending machine in search of any trace of The Hilarious House Of Frightenstein, What A Way To Go! and karmically aware soft drink Fruitopia. Along the way we'll be debating whether Count Chocula is an appropriate breakfast option for 'special occasions', critically assessing Michael Powell's Xtro, shuddering at the thought of The Jim Rose Circus Sideshow's most repulsive exhibit and and revealing why the hippy trail is strewn with striking dustbins, cough medicine and Crown Court. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/. You can also find Genevieve on Looks Unfamiliar talking about Boomerang, Over The Top, Bossa Nova, Thorazine Shuffle by Bongos Bass And Bob, Wizard's Hall by Jane Yolen and OK Soda here.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. No there is no way in which it can be improved by Fruitopia.

Memory is a funny thing. Sometimes you'll hear a song, and it takes you right back to where you were the last time you heard it. Or maybe it's a scent — like baked goods, or a spring flower bloom — that makes your brain light up. But food-based nostalgia? That's a different animal entirely. If you eat something you haven't had in awhile, that can really set off the cranial fireworks. On this episode, Saint and Jim take a look at the discontinued snacks and beverages from years past that aren't available anymore, and that they'd really love to see make a return. So grab some Dunkaroos, Magic Middles and an OK Soda, and earhole this. PLUS: the nerdiest of news.

Thirty years ago, a new kind of soda arrived in select stores. Instead of crowing about how spectacular it was, it offered up a liquid shrug, a fizzy irony. OK Soda was an inside joke for people who knew soda wasn't cool. But what exactly was the punchline? In today's episode, we're going to ask how Coca-Cola, a company predicated on the idea that soda is more than ‘OK,' ever bankrolled such a project. It was either a corporate attempt to market authenticity or a bold send-up of consumer capitalism; a project that either utterly, predictably failed or, perhaps more surprisingly, almost succeeded.

In 1998 something wonderful happened. I found a two liter of OK Soda in the back of a refrigerator at a church.

The Irrationally Exuberant

Ok Soda was a soda. A pop, as most folks call it up here – it's shameful what we've done with language - made by the good folks at the Coca Cola Corporation, dreamed up by the same ad wizards that created New Coke, the Coke that tasted like a Pepsi. Full caloried sodas were all the rage back then, as the boomers hadn't yet caught the health food bug. It was wreaking havoc on everyone as has pretty much everything the boomers did and didn't do. Also many things they kind of did. As a result, everybody in 1994 was hideous - bloated and pallid, capped by fluffy hair, wearing either long sleeve, white collared polos with pleated khakis or Big Johnson t-shirts and jeans so grotesque you wouldn't believe me if I described them to you.

POOP CULTURE: “The I’m-Not-Corporate baby Ts are on sale at Hot Topic.” (1993-1995) Today’s subject was intended to be OK Soda, a failed soft drink aimed at the slacker mindset of the early 90s. But in trying to discuss it, Bob and Tim unearthed an unacknowledged schism between the two of them. What follows is a dive into the sigh of Gen X and how that impacted their friendship, imposed differing life choices and eventually flung them on completely divergent paths. Hello friends, and welcome to the Spring Semester of Got Me A Movie! Andrew and Elbee are hittin’ the books as they discuss two school-related films: 2006’s Art School Confidential and 2000’s Crime + Punishment In Suburbia. First up is Art School Confidential, adapted from the work of underground comic artist Daniel Clowes. In this section of the show, the hosts talk about their experiences with Clowes’ art and comic books in general; Elbee brings up how she can’t really read comics very well, and Andrew speaks about his influences as an illustrator himself. Later, Elbee shares a brief history of cult beverage OK Soda (why? You’ll have to listen to find out!), and the two reminisce about “that ‘90s feeling.” The second half of the show features Crime + Punishment In Suburbia, a film loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s famous novel of nearly the same name. Elbee points out how the character and situational analogues don’t really work, but Andrew contends that they do indeed work well enough. Later, the pair get a tad philosophical with a discussion on criminal accountability. Thanks as always for listening, and don’t forget to check out our other podcast where we talk about horror films, with a focus on the master Vincent Price! We have an extra-short, extra-goofy show this week, because Kool and the Gang were right: it's TOO HOT. (Of course, Kool and the Gang were always right. So bring your good times and your laughter too, or suffer the consequences.) In honor of National Watermelon Day, we recall the good old days when the government forced everyone to rent Gallagher tapes and pretend to like them. (For a while in the mid-1980s, this was a largely a Gallagher-based economy.) Despite the horrifying heat, we also fire up our supercomputer for a round of "The Pudding Pages," and end up discussing Jolt Cola and other weird soda from the past. (Kornflake still misses OK Soda, mainly because she was addicted to their toll-free hotline.) And finally, our "Chickens in the News" segment takes us to the jungles of Indonesia, where some mad genius built a giant chicken church! But we don't need to visit, because our studio is already hotter than an Indonesian chicken church (as the old saying goes). And so we trust in the wisdom of Kool: Gotta run for shelter, gotta run for shade.
