Amanda and Vanessa discuss Italian comics, paranormal smut, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Book Riot Insiders, Libro.fm and TBR. Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Feedback None this week! Questions 1. I was just offered a position as a 4th grade reading/writing teacher starting in the fall. I've been teaching abroad for a while and need good kid-lit recs for my classroom as I'm out of the loop. Picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels are all welcome. I've already got some good ones like Lumberjanes, the Anne of Green Gables graphic novel, and of course Harry Potter. For context, the school is very diverse and has a very high ESL population with students from South Asia, the Middle East/ North Africa, and Central America. Books where kids can see themselves represented and that can cater to different English fluency levels would be amazing.  Thanks! -Teaching in America 2. I love historical fiction, it is one of my favorite genres. However, I am running out of books in my tbr that are historical fiction. My favorite eras are Tudor England and the American Civil War. (please no more WW2!) I tend to prefer stories surrounding larger-than-life figures or momentous events in history. But really I am up for anything, so long as I get attached to the characters. Some of my favorites include Wolf Hall, The Killer Angels, and The Help. (I also like historical fantasy and other genre-benders, but I don't need any help finding more of THAT.) -Katie 3. I hope you two can help! My boyfriend doesn’t read books at all, but that’s my main pastime and he has expressed an interest in trying to read more so we can hang out together and read. The main reason he doesn’t currently read books is because they need to grab him right away or he quickly loses interest, puts the book down, and never picks it back up again. A little about him: he’s an electrical engineer, is super smart, likes to tinker with cars and gadgets, is pretty curious about world events and all sorts of things – he will hear about something and go on an internet deep dive to learn all about it, and he has a great memory.  So far I have given him Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson and he really likes that one and I have Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai teed up for him because I think he will like the science-y, brain twistiness of both. Any ideas for what else I can give him? And for the record, I am totally fine with him not reading, but he has asked and so, of course, I am glad to oblige him and provide him with reading material! :) Thanks so much! -Elizabeth 4. A friend recently invited me travel to Italy this Fall, but I'm not sure if it's in my budget -- Can you help me find a graphic novel set in Italy so I can travel there in my imagination? Some comics/graphic novels/graphic memoirs I've enjoyed recently: Relish by Lucy Knisely, Moonstruck by Grace Ellis et. al., Sweater Weather by Sara Varon, and Lumberjanes  Thank you!! -Jess 5. I've been in a serious reading slump and I just need something super fast paced to get me out of it. I really like YA fantasy and romances. Anything with a map is great. I just bought Courting Darkness but haven't started it yet... I love Marissa Meyer and Richelle Mead. Stalking Jack the Ripper... The Dresden files... I read all over the place so basically anything is fine from kid lit to Adult. Love Captain Underpants.  -Rye 6. Please help with audiobooks for a concussed reader! Hi! I am a voracious reader, and after concussing myself on a freezer 10 days ago, I haven't been allowed to read text. I'm going into withdrawal!  I am a very eclectic reader, but generally I am more drawn to plot than characters. Humor, particularly snark, is always a plus, as well as just beautiful writing. Authors I love that I am in the mood for are Lois McMaster Bujold (particularly her Vorkosigan series, Cordelia is my favorite character), John Scalzi (particularly the Old Man's War series) and also Laurie R King (particularly her Mary Russell series). For beautiful writing, see China Mieville, though his books are way too complex for my poor brain to follow right now. Speaking of which, easy to follow is important right now! I'm having trouble with that. -Becca 7. hello ladies, firstly, I love listening to you guys- even when I'm not interested in the books suggested. I am on break in August for midwinter chill (hehah) and am on the lookout for some fun reads. I have just finished the psy-changeling series (got to support my fellow kiwis!) and Polaris Rising. They are both smutty and fun while still having a good plot. Can you give me any new SSF/smutty suggestions, I feel like I have read all the good ones and they are all the same. Paul moves from popular books to Br. Guy's 1990s planetary science textbook, Worlds Apart which Paul switched to in 2015, despite its age, precisely because of Br. Guy's explicit acknowledgment that "students want to learn about THE PLANETS." The chapters of the book therefore start with a saga of some planet, and then focus in on some process that is well exemplified on that planet. Other textbooks try to focus on processes and lose ME, let alone my students, most of whom were headed toward high school teaching. Br. Guy goes on from the subject of his books to talk a little about John Scalzi's take on the common advice to authors to "kill your darlings"..."the failure mode of clever is idiot." (I am not unfamiliar with John Scalzi, who is certainly a master of the craft: see my review of Old Man's War on Goodreads.) Bill references the science & religion initiative at the McGrath Institute at Notre Dame, to which Br. Guy has contributed. The Institute tries to form high school teachers with a sense of the complementary, rather than adversary, nature of science and faith. Br. Guy goes on to talk about how hard a high school teacher's job is, and the need for enthusiasm in presentation. If you are listening to two enthusiastic people talk shop about almost any topic, however little you yourself know about it, you get drawn in. That's the goal, except most high school teachers have to do it by themselves. A teacher that can maintain enthusiasm and also model comfort with not knowing the answer and intellectual humility..."I don't know; let's go find the answer"...is a great gift to insecure, "self-conscious but not self-aware" teenagers. Paul probes Br. Guy about the modern attitude of trying to discard as much of the past as possible. Br. Guy comments how living in Italy gives you perspective on how the attitude has shifted from the medieval attitude (discussed in great depth by CS Lewis in The Discarded Image) of reverence for the past, whose achievements we could never match, to the modern one. Rome gives you the perspective that while science and engineering may have advanced, art and architecture have not. Humanity can only progress so far...we can't get away from original sin. We do things we know are wrong, destructive, etc. That's why Twelve Step programs exist. A great 20th century tragedy, as has been noted many times, is the failure of great schemes (like communism) for revising society in some theoretically perfect new form. A chance reference to Shakespeare, and then to Star Trek VI (of course), leads us off into a discussion of language and the way it shapes our lives, from the fun people have had since Tolkien inventing whole new languages, to the difference in what Sarah cooks for Abraham's visitors in English (yuck) versus Italian. Br. Guy makes the provocative statement that one has to learn more new words in freshman biology than in freshman French. When you learn philosophy, you learn new words, and with those words (if you're really learning them) you learn new ways of thinking. As a final note, that's why you need others to truly learn and work in a subject...or in a faith. The Ethiopian that Phillip baptized in the Acts of the Apostles had a hard row to hoe.   https://vofoundation.org/blog https://vofoundation.org/faith-and-science   Books mentioned in the interview: Wind, Sand, and Stars by Antoine de Saint-Exupery Unapologetic by Francis Spufford The Rock by T.S. Amanda and Jenn discuss action-packed sci-fi, NYC stories, mysteries, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Summer Constellations by Alisha Sevigny and The Theory of Happily Ever After by Kristin Billerbeck.   Questions   1. Hey Amanda and Jenn! I'm looking for a good book for my boyfriend. He's never really enjoyed reading but is trying to change that, particularly because his sister and I just gush over books every time we're around each other and I think he wants in on the fun. He's mentioned that he might be interested in something like Stephen King, but the size of the books are too intimidating. I think he would particularly enjoy mysteries or thrillers, but any genre is welcome. The most important thing is that the books are not too long and they are easy to get through -- so no complicated structures or long lists of characters. Thanks for all you do, --Morgan   2. Hi guys! Tracy here. First, love your show and I’m so excited to get some book recs from you! I’m traveling to Greece with my mom who is newly divorced (after 40 years) from my dad. She is working on being independent and finding herself. I’m looking for books about mother, daughter relationships, independent women and any stories about Greece in general that might help me appreciate the country when we’re there in July. I’m not into religion, YA or love stories. Bonus for strong women main characters. TBR includes Have Mother, Will Travel. Thanks much!! --Tracey   3. Hi! I'm just about to finish grad school, and will be starting an internship in NYC in September (on my 30th birthday!). I would love to spend the summer reading books set in NYC to give me a feel for the city and some history and to help me make a list of things to do and see there. I'd prefer fiction but am fine with non-fiction. I just finished the Golem and the Jinni and loved it (can't remember any other books I've read set in NYC...sorry not helpful). Thanks so much! --Elyse   4. A friend recommended “A Secret History” by Donna Tartt and it changed my life. What other books can I read about an outsider joining a friend group that has deep secrets (secrets that might involve the occult or murder), secrets that ultimately make or break the group and the narrator? I also enjoyed “Bittersweet” by Miranda Beverly-Whittamore and “The Anatomy of Dreams” by Chloe Benjamin. --Lauren W   5. Hi guys, I love your show and it's introduced me to so many authors and books!! (Some favorites that you've mentioned are Bird Box, Hex, and Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge, so many thanks for bringing me book joy!) Last year, I read "After Her" by Joyce Maynard and LOVED IT. I was haunted by the story of two sisters who lure a serial killer in the hopes of helping their dad, town detective or sheriff (idk), who is slowly unraveling under the strain of solving the case. The beautiful portrayal of the sisters' relationship, the super interesting serial killer facet, and the vivid Northern California setting helped make this book one of my favorites of last year. I'm looking for a read-alike. The closest I've gotten is "Descent" by Tim Johnston, which was good, but I need more! So a literary novel with some sort of murder mystery but also a strong bond between siblings is what I desire. Extra points for vivid setting. (I've already read Attica Locke, by the way, and she is everything). Thank you! --Camille D   6. Hi! I'm starting a ~think deeper~ book club and I need a book to recommend for our early March read. I have a little bit of a weird request, perhaps... We just saw the play Hand to God (amazing puppet play set in a church...) and I am looking for a book about the creepier side of evangelist Christian communities and churches. Several of us were raised Christian and in the Deep South, and respect people's rights to believe what they want. BUT. As ex-Christians we're fascinated with evangelical Christians who engage in the more ~magical~ and performative acts (being possessed by the holy spirit, speaking in tongues, camping in tent cities) etc. I also recently saw the documentary Jesus Camp and it fueled my interest even more. I would really like to read more about these kinds of communities, double points for creepiness and/or magical realism/fantasy. (Christian-based cults are also very much interesting to me.) --W   7. I would like to get more into science fiction. I've read the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi and loved it. I tried reading a Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and couldn't finish it. If you have any fast-paced, action-packed science fic recommendations I would really appreciate it!
