Feminist philosophers have been writing about shaming and moral reproach for decades, but some of the theories and ideas about the moral justification for, and efficacy of, shaming don’t necessarily work when we’re talking about online shaming. In this episode, Jill interview Dr. Celia Edell about her research into online shaming. We’ll talk about what […]

Deze nieuwe Chicks And The City podcast aflevering is onderdeel van onsnieuwe project Chicks On Tour. Header photo by M. on Unsplash

Online shaming, dirty deleting, keyboard warriors, bullies telling people they are fat or they should die...this is our current society on social media and this needs to change.
One would not expect an online community devoted to discussion of dragons, vampires, and teenage heroes to be a cesspool of almost unimaginable toxicity. And yet! In this episode, Jesse walks Katie through a recent history of young adult fiction Twitter, aka "YA Twitter," and attempts to explain how it got to be such a Hobbesian hellscape. The latest scandal involves Jessica Cluess, a YA author falsely accused of racism and violent speech, and the opportunistic authors, consultants, and agents rushing to denounce her in as colorful and overwrought a manner as possible. On Chisme#11, Kim chats with Maria Ramos, worldwide known dancer and creator of "Womanity" (a dance team and movement) and they discuss how some of us women exude more masculine than Femenine energy not only in the workplace but in relationships as well. We navigate the power of being feminine and how to balance these two type of energies. We also talk about how this energy has helped Maria succeed in the Latin dance community and helped her overcome a "canceled or call out" incident, in which it did not only affected her emotionally but it jeopardized her reputation as a dancer. Maria was the first female latin dance studio owner, D'COR Studio in NYC for 3 years and is now a GLOBAL sensation with over 20 franchise teams all around the world called ``WOMANITY``. With over a decade of professional latin dance experience, Maria has accumulated a tremendous amount of valuable knowledge that she now wants to share with others. She believes that while perfecting your skills is a necessity, developing the right mindset is just as important. Maria is truly passionate about bringing full awareness to the power of community, compassion, sisterhood and acceptance all around the world. She really looks forward in meeting all of you beautiful souls from all around the world. We got this! Special Guest: Sue Scheff In today’s digitally driven world, disaster is only a click away. This is the written on the front flap of my next guest’s new book, Shame Nation. On this podcast, we’ve talked about the good and bad of the digital world- it can be a place of immense resource and positive education- we had a great discussion about learning and leading in a digital world with Eric Sheninger- and it can also be a home of aggression, misuse and the ugliness of humanity- from talking about bullying with Carrie Goldman and dignity and social aggression with Rosalind Wiseman. We have a few coming up like Katie Hurley talking about No More Mean Girls and a few others so, as parents, we know about the need for parental controls and the need for safety discussions regarding predators and who is friending you on social media. But my next guest brings to light a whole other segment of discussion that happens every day on the internet and can be like a runaway train if you don’t catch it before it gets out of control- online shaming. After Jesse reluctantly reveals some incredibly embarrassing and personal details about his love life in the opening segment, the hosts discuss last week's two big media stories: Bari Weiss's resignation from The New York Times and Andrew Sullivan's firing from New York Magazine. Is this a sign that these outlets are narrowing their windows of acceptable opinion? Was Weiss's treatment in her workplace genuinely unfair, or is she reacting with the same 'safetyism' she has so forcefully criticized? If Jesse and Katie were trapped on a desert island, who would eat who? These and other questions, answered. After Jesse bravely expresses an opinion that is likely to get him cancelled by Cancel Culture, and to potentially destroy the podcast entirely, the hosts, who are clearly hated by God Himself (of maybe... HERself??), devote almost the entire episode to Letter Discourse and Counter-Letter Discourse. The discussion mostly concerns the harassment of a Vox staffer, which Jesse contributed to and feels bad about, even as he is aggrieved at the unhinged-in-light-of-the-evidence Jesse Did It narrative that took over bluecheck Twitter earlier this week. What are individuals' responsibilities during online pileons? Will journalists ever stop being full of shit with regard to which acts -- screencapping, quote-retweeting, mocking -- are and aren't considered harassment? In the closing segment, the hosts briefly discuss President Trump's interesting strategy of fighting for free speech and open academic inquiry by unleashing the federal government to investigate universities, as one does. If you search for her name and the name of the outlets mentioned, you will find it all -- we promise.)
The gang celebrates July 4th by barely mentioning it. Instead, Jesse and Katie talk about Blocked and Reported's arguably FIRST EVER beef, which involves a very sensitive staffer at The New Republic. Then they relay two real corrections and one fake one from previous episodes, talk about the increasing possibility, in light of a new court decision, that at least one contributor to the Shitty Media Men list will be 'unmasked,' and discuss a thoughtful essay on what it feels like to be at the bottom of a Twitter pileon. In this week's episode, Katie and Jesse discuss the Amy Cooper/Christian Cooper incident in Central Park. Is this different from other instances of online shaming? Do we lose something when, in trying to understand a complicated problem like police shootings and other abuses, we focus in on individuals rather than institutions and structures? Why are white women so often pilloried these days when white men, like Jesse in particular, are obviously so much worse? Life Of Leisure - Episode #72 The Effects Of Online Shaming April 24, 2019
The author and journalist Jon Ronson made the podcast "The Butterfly Effect" about the many and sometimes surprising consequences of the rise in free online pornography. He's also written a book about public online shaming and abuse called 'So You've Been Publicly Shamed'. These two worlds meet in 'The Last Days of August' his new show telling the story of August Ames, an adult actor and model who took her own life in December 2017. We play some of episode 1 of The Last Days of August, presented and produced by Jon Ronson and Lina Misitzis and available exclusively via Audible. [Warning: the clip deals with mature subject matter and contains some discussion of suicide.]
One thing we all seem to agree on is that empathy is an unmitigated good. But what if we are wrong? Might some forms of empathy actually be dangerous for society, biasing preferences towards those that look like us, or even those we find attractive? And even when our closest companions are in pain, is ‘feeling what they feel’ really the best way to help? Are horrific acts of cruelty made palatable by dehumanising the victims, or is the truth actually much worse? And how can social media turn do-gooders into deliverers of unlimited vengeance? Paul Bloom takes Igor and Charles for a walk on the dark side, exploring the treacherous hidden terrain of empathy, harmless torturers, aggregate cruelty and third-party punishment. Igor calls for tech companies to start hiring moral philosophers, Paul raises moral objections to loving your own children, and Charles has his mind blown and heart crushed by a revelatory, yet even darker, interpretation of human cruelty. Welcome to Episode 8. Special Guest: Paul Bloom.
Thursday 7-12-18 Show #207: On tonight's Real Laughs we talk about online shaming, ridiculous car mods, and we throwback to old school video games.
Special Guest: Sue Scheff In today's digitally driven world, disaster is only a click away. This is the written on the front flap of my next guest's new book, Shame Nation. On this podcast, we've talked about the good and bad of the digital world- it can be a place of immense resource and positive education- we had a great discussion about learning and leading in a digital world with Eric Sheninger- and it can also be a home of aggression, misuse and the ugliness of humanity- from talking about bullying with Carrie Goldman and dignity and social aggression with Rosalind Wiseman. We have a few coming up like Katie Hurley talking about No More Mean Girls and a few others so, as parents, we know about the need for parental controls and the need for safety discussions regarding predators and who is friending you on social media. But my next guest brings to light a whole other segment of discussion that happens every day on the internet and can be like a runaway train if you don't catch it before it gets out of control- online shaming. HEY GALZ!This week we wanna touch on online bashing. The hate mobs, the offended, the dragging people through the mud over what seems to be a thoughtless and maybe ignorant remark. In this day and age we are so quick to slap something up on our social media without thinking, but that can come with a BIG price. We want to ask, is this fair? Should someone be held responsible for the wrongs of a system or a culture, because they are a product of it? When you obsess about someone you want in your life or someone that broke up with you, what can you do to stop the never-ended thoughts? What about when you go so far as to stalk them and find out everything you can about them? This is a two-part segment because there's a lot to talk about. In segment two a woman wants to know if she heals and grows will her husband see that she is better and want to stay in the relationship. However the husband has been manipulative and unkind to her, letting her know that she's the one with the problem and she's the one who needs help. Can they save their marriage or are they doomed to fail? During the close of the show I talk about Justine Sacco and how her life was ruined because of a misunderstood joke on Twitter. Public shaming takes the stage in this segment. Visit getoutofthemess.com for your legal insurance to protect your rights.
Online bullying and shaming is something I've lived with for the better part of the past 4 years I've spent building Run, Selfie, Repeat but my first experience with it shaped how I view online bullying and shaming for the rest of my life. Today, I'm all about advocating for compassion because regardless of how inexcusable someone's mistakes may be, I don't condone the schadenfreude that surrounds online witch hunts. I'm serious when I say that I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject. What are your thoughts on the lack of compassion in online comments and message boards? What can we do to make a change? If you haven't already, take a second to subscribe to this podcast on iTunes or Google Play and, if you're feeling extra generous, I would be beside myself with gratitude if you would give it a 5 star review.
Welcome to episode #050 of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast, with Melissa Agnes and Garth Rowan. From female reporters being spontaneously and continually harassed during live reporting, to individuals making mistakes caught on camera and ending up losing their jobs as a result of the footage going viral. We’ve seen some extreme cases of online shaming in the past few years, often resulting in online bullying with dire consequences. But where does society need to draw a line for this type of mob lynching mentality, and how can we determine whether or not the punishments actually fit the crimes? Additionally, what is the best practice for organizations whose employees get caught in these types of viral controversies? In this episode of The Crisis Intelligence Podcast, Garth Rowan and I discuss the reality of online shaming and the impact it has been having on individuals and organizations alike. Through the discussion of several recent case studies, we examine the realities of online shaming and best practices for organizations and individuals for this type of crisis prevention and crisis management. It’s an interesting discussion on a very timely and impactful topic. Enjoy!
