Fluoride and Healthy Teeth

Fluoride has been in the news recently with some people questioning the worth of adding this vital mineral to the water supplies in the United States.  Fluoride repairs and prevents damage to teeth caused by bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria in the mouth produce acid when a person eats or drinks. The acid dissolves minerals in a tooth's surface, making the tooth weaker and open to cavities.1 Fluoride replaces the minerals lost from a tooth due to acid breakdown. Some fluoride can replace minerals in the tooth surface, making the outer enamel layer harder to dissolve. Fluoride also may reduce the amount of acid that cavity-causing bacteria produce, as well as making it harder for these bacteria to stick to the teeth.1 Protecting teeth requires consistent, low levels of fluoride in the mouth (in the saliva and on tooth surfaces). Fluoride can also be incorporated into developing dental enamel before a tooth erupts into the mouth, enhancing the tooth's resistance to acid breakdown and preventing cavities later in life. (credits) Some public figures have made false claims that adding fluoride to drinking water poses health risks, such as reduced intelligence in children and cancer. When used at recommended levels, fluoride in drinking water is safe and effective for preventing tooth decay, which also provides benefits for people's overall health. Extensive research has consistently demonstrated that optimal fluoridation does not pose a detectable risk of cancer or other serious health issues.  (credits) The discovery of Fluoride as a preventative for tooth decay.

**Discussion begins at 6:00**In 1901, Frederick McKay was a dentist who opened a practice in Colorado Springs and found that his patients all seemed to have stained/mottled teeth, but no cavities.  Why was this?  He determined, after nearly 30 years and with the help of other researchers, that they all had what is now called fluorosis – and it was the result of high levels of fluoride in the Colorado Springs drinking water.  He reported his findings to the dental community, and people started comparing fluoride levels and dental hygiene in various geographical areas. In the 1930s, a dentist with the US Public Health Service, sought to determine how high the level of fluoride in the water could be before it caused mottling, in hopes they could remove fluoride from water sources where there were higher levels.  During his study, he learned that low doses had a protective effect.  It was reported that when natural fluoride concentration was greater than 1 part per million, the incidence of cavities was seen to be reduced by some 50-65% and the World Health Organization began to recommend supplemental fluoride where levels were low.In the 1940s and 50s, there was a push to fluoridate water in the US and Canada, reportedly in an attempt to improve dental health.  This practice was immediately divisive, and remains that way today.  Today, the American Dental Association remains a strong advocate of adding fluoride to water and estimates that every dollar spent on fluoridation saves about fifty dollars in future dental expenses.  Nonetheless, for the last7 0 years there have been people who felt that the government had and continues to have a more nefarious goal… Was this all a communist plot to undermine American health or control the population?  Other critics note similarities between MK Ultra studies and fluoridating water.   The potential goal of mind control was even referenced in the 1964 political satire Dr Strangelove – in which one of the characters, General Jack D. Ripper believes that fluoridation of public water supplies is a Communist conspiracy designed to weaken American willpower. He sees it as a sinister plot to destroy "our precious bodily fluids".  Was this all a conspiracy to cover up and get rid of fluoride, an industrial waste product of fertilizer?  Finally, there are those who believe that water fluoridation is an infringement of individual rights - similar to mass medication or vaccination without consent.  Additional concerns surround the potential negative health effects including bone cancer, thyroid issues, and cognitive deficits in children – but what is the truth?    Is fluoride in our water a cheap and effective way to improve dental health?  Or is there something more sinister at play?Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA

When a patient has tried every clean-eating plan, every supplement protocol, and every practitioner,  but is still exhausted, anxious, and foggy  it's time to look where no one else has. In this episode, Inna teams up with functional dentist Dr. Michelle Jorgensen to explore a very overlooked trigger and aggravator for Hashimoto's symptoms: your mouth.Through the case of “Cindy,” a Hashimoto's patient who did everything right but still wasn't getting better, Inna and Dr. Michelle reveal how hidden dental infections, past root canals, and even the materials used in old dental work can silently drive inflammation and autoimmune flares. What looks like “perfect” dental health on X-rays might actually be masking deep, ongoing issues that most conventional dentists never catch.Dr. Michelle brings her unique insight as a dentist-turned-health detective, showing how problems like cavitations, mixed metals, and even mouth breathing can create a ripple effect on the immune system, the microbiome, and the thyroid. She also explains how to safely investigate and address these issues  and why healing often requires asking the questions no one else is asking. This episode opens a powerful new conversation for anyone with Hashimoto's who still doesn't feel well despite doing “everything right” and exactly what you can do to explore what your mouth is trying to tell you.----------For full show notes, please see:https://innatopiler.com/podcasts/root-canals-cavities-hashimotos-dentist-dr-michelle-jorgensen/Get ThyroLove - the first all in one bottle multi-nutrient comprehensive formula designed specifically for those with Hashimoto's at ThyroLove.com - use code “Podcast” to get 10% off and free shipping For more information about everything Hashimoto's please visit InnaTopiler.comIf you are struggling to lose weight with Hashimoto's, Inna has a 10 day plan just for you at InnaTopiler.com/jumpstartIf you need help with fatigue or brain fog with Hashimoto's, please check out Inna's 9 Day Exhaustion Solution at innatopiler.com/energyIf you don't yet know your thyroid type, please be sure you sign up for Inna's next free training at InnaTopiler.com/zoomcall

v DR. MICHELLE JORGENSEN, DDS After a decade and a half of studying and practicing dentistry and medicine so that she could keep others well, Dr. Michelle Jorgensen, DDS' own body was sick. As a young mom of four busy, growing children, she was stretched between a demanding business and a taxing home life. She had no energy and felt like she could barely keep her head above water. She couldn't sleep through the night or hold her dental instruments without pain and numbness in her hands and arms. Her diet had been whittled down to a few “safe” foods that she could eat without stomach pain, and her once very sharp memory couldn't remember crucial details about patients and procedures. Something was very wrong but a plethora of doctors, blood tests, scopes, and X-rays all told her it was stress.  There was one test the doctors didn't run and she asked for at the suggestion from a new practitioner friend—mercury toxicity.  “When my test results came back, I was floored,” says Dr. Jorgensen. “My mercury levels were so high they were off the charts. Finally, I had an answer, and it was simple. The mercury in those seemingly innocent fillings that I had been removing from my patients' teeth was poisoning me and my cells. After learning about my toxic mercury levels, I swung between disbelief and anger that, as a dentist, I hadn't been warned about this inherent danger, and profound relief that I had an answer for what was causing my body's systems to fail.” Her five-year path to recovery led Dr. Jorgensen to discover ways to improve her family's and her own health in all facets of life. Now, her new book breaks down what “health” really means for every cell in your body. In Living Well with Dr. Michelle: A Comprehensive Handbook for Optimal Health and Unlimited Energy (BenBella, May 20th, 2025), Dr. Michelle makes it simple, breaking down the true meaning of health at the cellular level and beyond. Drawing from time-tested wisdom and evidence-based modern science, she provides a clear, practical path to lasting well-being.  Watch Dr. Michelle's intro video here.  We talk about:             ●      How to Have the Energy You Want, Without Getting Lost in Today's Health Trends ●      The Secret to Lasting Energy: Your Cells ●      Fueling Your Body with What It Needs (Eating seasonally, prioritizing whole foods, staying hydrated, including health fats) ●      Creating a Healthy Environment for Your Cells (reduce toxins, manage stress, support you detox system, rest and recover) ●      Protecting Your Cells from Harm (boost your immune system, exercise, avoid overexposure from toxins, connect with nature) ●      Communicating with Your Cells (daily movement, deep breathing, rest, listen to your body's signals) ●      Why medicine is just a band-aid—Your cells do the healing      ●      Why your symptoms are not the enemy—They are the answer  ●      If you can keep one cell well, you can keep them all well—Introducing the Cell Well Model ●      The Fluoride controversy and brain health ●      Mercury toxicity and hidden dangers in dentistry- Dr. Michelle's personal journey  ●      Oxygen's connection to inflammation and what your mouth is telling you about your health   www.livingwellwithdrmichelle.com

My guest is Dr. Staci Whitman, DMD, a board-certified functional dentist for kids and adults. We discuss the critical importance of oral care and the oral microbiome for brain and bodily health. We examine the negative effects of common oral care product ingredients such as alcohol, astringents, and bleaches. We also explore the history and real impact of fluoridated drinking water on oral, bone, and systemic health. Then we discuss healthy, lesser-known solutions for bad breath, canker sores, cavities, and teeth whitening. We cover how teeth can be made to repair their own cavities and the connection between oral health and cardiovascular health, male and female fertility, dementia, and cancer. This episode goes far beyond the best approaches to brushing and flossing and will be a valuable resource for anyone seeking to improve their oral health and appearance at any age. Tree Swallows and bluebirds — like this Western Bluebird — are among the earliest northbound migrants to arrive, heralding spring a month before the equinox. These species will nest only in cavities, such as old woodpecker holes or man-made nest boxes. But the supply of specialized nest sites is limited, and competition is intense. By arriving early, these swallows and bluebirds improve their chances of securing unoccupied cavities.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. The Detox Dilemma

Nearly every child today is developing with an airway that's too small for their tongue, and most parents have no idea it's happening. In this crucial conversation with Dr. Hilary Fritsch, an airway-focused dentist, we expose why so many American children need braces, struggle with focus, or experience chronic health issues. The truth is, symptoms like mouth breathing, snoring, frequent ear infections, and even ADHD-like behavior aren't random - they're often signs of an underdeveloped airway and jaw.The most frustrating part? This epidemic is entirely preventable with early intervention. Through proper screening and treatment starting at age three, children can develop properly-sized airways and jaws, often avoiding the need for braces altogether. This isn't just about straight teeth - it's about your child's sleep, breathing, and long-term health.Whether your child has chronic cavities despite good oral hygiene, struggles with focus, or shows any signs of breathing issues, this episode could change their future. If you have a child between the ages of 3-12, go to www.toothpillow.com to get your free virtual video assessment started.  Tell them Wendy from Toxin Free(ish) sent you and use code WENDY at checkout to get the upgraded virtual video assessment for FREE,  plus $200 off any treatment. In today's episode, we're chatting about: • Why crooked teeth and the need for braces aren't just genetic • The connection between airway development and common childhood health issues • How to identify signs of airway issues in your child • Why early intervention (starting at age 3) is crucial • The truth about mouth breathing and its impact on your child's healthDownload the Top 25 Toxins to Avoid and become a label reading pro!
