Debi Bryk has spent over eight years using functional genomics in clinical practice — and what she found changed everything about how she works with clients. In this conversation, Debi walks through the MaxGen Labs WORX panel, breaks down methylation in plain English, explains why MTHFR is only one piece of a much larger puzzle, and reveals why jumping straight to methylated B vitamins without knowing your COMT status can leave you feeling dramatically worse. She also unpacks how genetic variants in toxic response to plastics, pesticides, and seed oils can explain why some people develop chronic illness in environments that don't seem to affect others — and what you can actually do about it. Debi also explores the emerging role of lithium orotate in ADHD and Alzheimer's prevention, why low choline may be driving the mood and cognitive crisis more people experience every day, and shares her clinical framework for sequencing testing that dramatically accelerated healing and reduced costs for her clients by eliminating the guesswork entirely. Western civilization did not invent slavery — it ended it. Western civilization didn't harm countries through colonialism, it helped them. These are hard truths to swallow but they are true. So, why do so many people hate civilization? Let's define civilization, shall we? Let's look at the chief characteristics that a civilization must possess. We shall list them in this episode. Why are Israel and America singled out for hatred and not Sweden, France, and Germany? Why Reform Judaism is more socially acceptable. Any thug, either urban or international, is advantaged by willingness to use violence. In a robust civilized landscape, thugs lose their advantage — naturally, they hate civilization. "We inhibited a brain region and connectivity went up. I thought it was an artifact..."Dr. Alessandro Gozzi is a systems neuroscientist investigating how the brain functions as an integrated network and how disruptions in that network relate to behavior and mental health. He is Senior Scientist and Group Leader of the Functional Neuroimaging Laboratory at the Italian Institute of Technology in Rovereto, Italy. His research combines fMRI, functional ultrasound imaging, optogenetics, chemogenetics, electrophysiology, and computational modeling to decode the neural underpinnings of brain connectivity in rodent models, with the goal of bridging circuit-level findings to human psychopathology. In this conversation, Dr. Gozzi unpacks what resting-state fMRI connectivity actually reflects and why the answer may be more surprising than the field assumes. Drawing on a series of elegant chemogenetic and pharmacological manipulations in mice, he reveals how regional excitability, rather than direct synaptic communication, may be a dominant driver of the connectivity patterns we observe. Within this context, the conversation explores the paradoxical relationship between neural silencing and hyperconnectivity, the evolutionary conservation of brain networks across species, and what rodent models of autism can and cannot tell us about human psychiatric disorders. Join the conversation to discover how mechanistic animal studies are reshaping our understanding of human brain connectivity. We hope you enjoy this episode!Chapters:00:00 - Introduction to Dr. Alessandro Gozzi05:12 - Gozzi's Unconventional Journey into Neuroscience13:17 - Transitioning from Industry to Academia20:49 - The Relevance of Rodent Models in Understanding Autism32:04 - Exploring the Complexities of Brain Connectivity38:57 - Excitability and Its Role in Connectivity Patterns42:27 - Exploring fMRI Connectivity and Local Computation45:28 - The Role of the Hearst Index in Brain Activity54:00 - Implications for Treatment in Psychiatric Disorders58:42 - The Intersection of Biology and Neuroscience Research01:07:08 - Balancing Life and Science: Personal ReflectionsWorks mentioned:00:12:48 - Gutierrez-Barragan, D. et al. In today's episode, I explore an important topic in modern parenting: the importance of struggle, and how easily it's being lost in a world shaped by convenience, technology, and AI. While AI is part of the conversation, this episode goes deeper, focusing on what happens when children no longer get enough practice doing hard things.I explain why struggle is not a problem to eliminate, but a critical part of healthy brain development. When kids wrestle with challenges, frustration, effort, and uncertainty, they build resilience, problem-solving skills, emotional regulation, and confidence. These capacities don't come from ease or shortcuts, they come from experience. The episode gently challenges the instinct to smooth the path too much for our children, especially when tools like AI can quickly remove discomfort. Throughout the conversation, the message is clear: kids don't need life to be harder, but they do need meaningful struggle. When parents stay present, encouraging, and regulated, children learn that they can tolerate difficulty and come out stronger on the other side.Jennifer's Takeaways:The Importance of Struggle in Parenting (00:00)Understanding Dopamine and Its Role in Motivation (00:48)The Impact of Technology on Children's Motivation (03:37)The Concept of Optimal Frustration (05:33)The Role of AI in Education and Parenting (09:13)Building Resilience and Mental Health (14:13)The Importance of Valuing the Process Over the Outcome (14:50)The Role of Parents in Guiding Children's Development (19:44)The Impact of AI on Emotional Maturity and Resilience (19:56)Meet Jennifer KolariJennifer Kolari is the host of the “Connected Parenting” weekly podcast and the co-host of “The Mental Health Comedy” podcast. The ALL ME® Podcast Do You Need URO-A and CoQ-10 In Your Life? – Dr. Emily Werner In this episode of the ALL ME Podcast, Don Hooton speaks with Dr. Emily Werner, a sports dietitian for the Philadelphia 76ers. They discuss Dr. Werner's journey into sports nutrition, her experiences working with professional athletes, and the importance of building relationships with players to effectively communicate nutritional advice. The conversation also covers the role of nutrition in enhancing athletic performance, the collaboration with external nutrition professionals, and the significance of specific nutrients like Urolithin A in supporting athletes' health and performance. In this conversation, Dr. Emily Werner discusses the significance of gut health, the role of Urolithin A and CoQ10 as supplements, and the importance of dietary choices in maintaining optimal health. She emphasizes the need for targeted supplementation due to the decline in gut microbiome diversity and the natural production of CoQ10 with age. The discussion also highlights the role of dietitians in assessing nutritional deficiencies through blood work, particularly in athletes, and the evolving landscape of dietary supplements. To Purchase urolithin A in supplement form, Emily recommends purchasing from www.timeline.com Takeaways Dr. Werner's journey into sports nutrition began with a love for anatomy and physiology. Building relationships with athletes is crucial for effective nutrition counseling. Nutrition plays a vital role in the performance and longevity of athletes. Urolithin A is a metabolite that supports mitochondrial health. Athletes often have their own chefs or nutritionists, complicating team dynamics. Effective communication with external nutrition professionals is essential. Traveling with the team allows for better food coordination and athlete support. Nutrition education is important for young athletes to enhance their performance. The importance of nutrition has grown in professional sports over the years. Athletes benefit from a diet rich in fruits, nuts, and other nutrient-dense foods. Not everyone has the right gut microbiome for nutrient conversion. Urolithin A is a supplement that addresses bioavailability issues. Foundational supplements like Urolithin A can benefit everyone. CoQ10 is essential for energy production in mitochondria. CoQ10 helps clear out reactive oxygen species in the body. Urolithin A and CoQ10 can work synergistically for health. Dietary sources of CoQ10 include meat and fish. Statins can deplete natural CoQ10 levels in the body. Blood work can reveal nutritional deficiencies in athletes. Dietitians play a crucial role in nutritional health and prevention. Today's guest is Romain Tourillon. Romain is a sports physiotherapist and researcher specializing in the foot–ankle complex, with clinical leadership at the Swiss Olympic Medical Center, La Tour Hospital (Geneva). His PhD at Université Jean Monnet Saint-Étienne examined foot muscle strength and sport performance. It's important to train the lower legs in athletes, but the question is what type of training is best, especially when it comes to working the toes and forefoot, versus more general calf and shin work. In this episode, Romain discusses his research on forefoot biomechanics and performance. He shares training that boosted MTP (big-toe) flexion strength ~28% in trained athletes and explains how stronger forefeet enhance sprinting, cutting, and jumping via better force transmission and stability. We also cover injury prevention, targeted foot/ankle exercises, challenges in measuring toe strength, and where 3D analyses may take the field— with practical takeaways for coaches and athletes throughout. Today's episode is brought to you by Hammer Strength and the Just Fly Sports Online Courses Check out the newest mini-course, Sprint Drills Reloaded on how to maximize sprint drills, their specific strength development, building of major sprint actions, along with better integration of sprint drills into sprinting technique. Test new foot or ankle drills on yourself first to refine cues and feel. Note the sensations and difficulties athletes might face before implementing. Use self-testing to build better communication and progression strategies. 4:46 – Using Everyday Objects to Innovate Foot Training The “foot bridge” concept came from standing barefoot on two bricks, showing that creative setups can unlock new sensations without expensive tools. Incorporate simple props like bricks or angled boards to change foot loading. Create small balance challenges to engage the toes and arches differently. Use low-cost, adaptable tools to spark innovation in foot training. 8:16 – Surface Texture and Proprioception in Barefoot Work Different surfaces alter how foot muscles activate, making proprioception a key training variable. Rotate athletes between rough, smooth, and dampened surfaces to shift activation. Use barefoot drills regularly to strengthen sensory feedback from the toes.
