Paired Power's pop-up microgrid aims to solve challenges associated with fleet electrification

Fleet electrification is tricky. Many fleet locations never planned to one day convert their vehicles to run using electric powertrains, and therefore lack the adequate electrical infrastructure to easily make the switch. The good news is that upgrade solutions are typically available, and today there are lots of partners out there who can help fleets get started. The bad news is that the upgrade process can involve lengthy wait times – sometimes up to two years – due to factors like utility management and equipment shortages.Tom McCalmont, CEO and co-founder of Paired Power, says his company has developed what he calls a novel solution that both circumvents the need for extensive grid upgrades and also significantly accelerates the installation process: PairTree, a pop-up solar canopy that offers freedom from costly construction and infrastructure upgrades required by traditional solar canopy installation."Over the last 10 or 12 years, solar has gotten dramatically cheaper, but the one type of solar that has not gotten dramatically cheaper is solar carports. And the reason they haven't is ... because they have a massive foundation, with steel and concrete going into the ground. It's a very labor-intensive process to construct the actual overhead canopy and it's slow," McCalmont says. "So, we thought about that problem. The PairTree has a ballasted foundation with a light attachment. It can be attached to the ground with ground screws, but it's not a massive foundation like you would do with a traditional canopy. All of that can be accomplished in one day with two workers."In this episode of The Amped EV Podcast, McCalmont discusses the challenges related to fleet electrification, why some fleets are turning to microgrid EV charging systems, and the adaptability of these charging systems to different geographic conditions. The Buzz: www.thebuzzevnews.com

Erin Quick is the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of PairTree, an app and website dedicated to making the adoption process easier for both expectant mothers and hopeful parents. As an adoptive mom of 2, she has first-hand experience with the challenges and emotions that surround adoption. So much of the decisions surrounding birth moms and families wanting to adopt are rooted in sadness, with seasons of grief that come and go long after the adoption is finalized. At PairTree, birth moms have access to lifetime support and mental health resources whenever they need it. Another major part of PairTree's mission is all about supporting families without the huge fees that are typical when working with adoption agencies. All of this was ,adding possible through laser links between the satellites in orbit that eliminate the need for ground stations at the poles Ultimately this makes Antarctica the seventh and final continent to receive Starlink internet coverage.  Google spins out secret hi-speed telecom project called Aalyria | CNBC (04:52) Codenamed “Minkowski” within Google, the secret project is being unveiled to the public on Monday, Sept. 12th, as a new spinout called Aalyria. No clue how long it's been working on the technology or how many employees are joining the startup Not too many details about the project. Aalyria said in a news release that its mission is to manage “hyper fast, ultra-secure, and highly complex communications networks that span land, sea, air, near space, and deep space.” The company continues by claiming they have laser communications technology “ on an exponentially greater scale and speed than anything that exists today.” It will be led by CEO Chris Taylor, a national security expert who has led other companies that have worked with the government.  Have an $8.7 million commercial contract with the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit. The Light laser tech is named, “Tightbeam” The claim is that it keeps data “intact through the atmosphere and weather and offers connectivity where no supporting infrastructure exists.” “Radically [improving] satellite communications, Wi-Fi on planes and ships, and cellular connectivity everywhere.” A blood test that could detect cancers early will undergo trials in the U.S. | Interesting Engineering (11:04) According to a report by MIT Tech Review, The U.S. is preparing to launch trials of blood tests that can improve the detection of multiple kinds of cancer. The test will be conducted by the National Cancer Institute Testing efficacy of various blood tests in detecting cancer in 24,000 healthy participants over four years. The only test that is currently used in the U.S. is the Galleri, which claims to detect more than 50 cancer types.  Not approved by the FDA Therefore, it's not covered by most insurance and costs $949. To give a brief explanation on how the majority of these multi-cancer early detection tests (MCEDs) work: Searching for tumor cell remnants that explode after being attacked by the immune system in the bloodstream. A cancer warning before symptoms appear. Only some blood tests can identify the organ where the cancer is in.  To confirm a diagnosis a biopsy has to be performed but if you can't tell the location that is an issue The whole body of a person cannot be biopsied. The NCI trial should provide a standard approach to launching cancer screening research. Timothy Rebbeck, a professor of cancer prevention at Harvard thinks these tests will be critically helpful in cases of pancreatic, liver, and ovarian cancer, which are fatal and do not have any other screening options. Concluding, “It seems very realistic to me to think that we could reduce death by half." This modular off-grid solar EV charger can be installed in just four hours | Electrek (18:34) Paired Power, a California company, has debuted a modular, off-grid electric vehicle charger that is powered by a solar canopy. The new modular charger called PairTree There is Level 1 (household charging, very slow), Level 2 (adds around twenty or so miles of range to the batteries of your car for every hour), and Fast Charging (Tesla Supercharging stations) A transportable solar canopy with built-in EV charging capabilities Can be used off grid, but it can also be hooked into the grid if desired.  Comes in 5 kW units using 10 bifacial solar panels each Level 2 Charging PairTree is designed to optimize EV charging loads to deliver up to 75 miles of daily range. PairTree can be installed in only four hours by two people. Tom McCalmont, CEO and cofounder of Paired Power, said: “EV charging is no longer a fringe benefit for any location where a car might park; it's quickly becoming a service that both average citizens and employees expect. There are various reasons why site owners don't want to wait or might have restrictions on grid-connected EV charging or conventional solar canopies, and PairTree is the solution to bring any location quickly into the EV future.” Paired Power is taking orders for PairTree now, and the company is expecting general delivery to take place in the second quarter of 2023. PairTree's starting price is $26,900, and that covers the canopy and solar only (no charging or other electronics).  Fully configured units will sell for mid-$60k depending on options. Scientists Just Made Hydrogen Fuel With Nothing But Air and Solar Power | Singularity Hub (23:55) Researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia have developed a new technique that makes hydrogen fuel out of thin air in even the driest climates. Hydrogen could also be an important part of the energy mix. Burned just like conventional fuels, but the only byproduct it releases is water For hydrogen to contribute to decarbonization, “green hydrogen” is needed. Produced by electrolyzers that split water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy. Gang Kevin Li, co-author on the study, told Newsweek: “The ability to use moisture from air makes this DAE [direct air electrolyzer] module applicable in remote, arid, and semi-arid environments where the accessibility to fresh water is a big problem … Most areas on earth with high solar and wind potentials lack fresh water.” Even in the driest climates, though, there is a considerable amount of moisture in the air. Sahel desert, relative humidity is still around 20 percent on average The researchers device to do all of this hydrogen harvesting consists of  a water harvesting unit that houses a sponge soaked in a water-absorbing liquid that can pull moisture from the air. Electrodes that can be powered by any renewable energy source. When current runs through those electrodes water is split via electrolysis into its constituent oxygen and hydrogen atoms, which can then be collected as gas. The team showed the device could run efficiently for 12 consecutive days   Produced hydrogen with 99 percent purity. In a test for real world potential: rigged up five electrolyzers in parallel and placed them outside powered by a solar panel Produced an average of 745 liters (197 gallons) of hydrogen per square meter per day. Half of conventional electrolyzer methods, but this is running just on humidity Until electrolyzer technology comes down in price and becomes more efficient, hydrogen is unlikely to compete with traditional fuels, whether it's pulled from thin air or not.

Erin Quick is the CEO and Co-Founder of PairTree, a company that is modernizing the adoption process.  Erin is a powerhouse - she's founded three successful startups, she's a Puget Sound Business Journal 40 under 40, she's a marketer and branding professional, and maybe most importantly, Erin is also a mother.   When Erin's fertility path led to adoption, she, as a marketer and brander, began asking questions about the process and wondering why it had to be the way it was - expensive, discriminatory, and long.  After deviating from the norm and adopting two kids with her own team, her circle started reaching out for help.  That circle grew, and before she knew it, she realized her calling was to modernize adoption and figure out how to allow all families to grow without an agency if they so desired.  All in Spring of 2020.  While she was homeschooling a Kindergartner and Pre-schooler. It's not often that you get to speak to a visionary.  This interview is one where I walked away knowing that I was speaking to someone who is going to change the world.  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.  Trigger warnings - we talk about infertility, miscarriage and loss in this episode.  We discuss adoption, placement and all the things that come with it.   If you are considering adoption or placement please find PairTree here.  PairTree on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/pairtreefamily/ Please leave a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify!   Thank you to my sponsors: Johnson and Walker Real Estate Jon Grus at Element Mortgage

This month we have Erin Quick- CEO & Co-Founder of PairTree. She is the face of the adoption industry with her mission to disrupt the adoption system. *I would love for you to go way back and tell us, what was your big dream when you were growing up? What did you think you were going to be? * “I was convinced I was going to be an interior designer”, Erin replies. Erin says that she has always been left and right-brained. She loves the patterns, colors, and space, putting all of those elements together, and getting creative. She says when she got to college she learned that there were so many options that she didn't even know existed. Tell us about your career trajectory and how you ended up founding a company that's main focus is adoption. Erin says she went to college and ended up dropping out her sophomore year and starting work in Seattle. She says, by luck, she ended up working in a marketing department and filling in for a co-worker while she was on maternity leave and ended up falling in love with marketing. With intentions of going back to school, she got recruited into an ad agency and then got advice that she needed to go into brand strategy. She then got a job in brand strategy in San Francisco and later on moved to New York. She was there for about seven to eight years and then decided to move back to Seattle. There, no one was doing brand strategy the way she had been taught. She then found a guy who knew everything about brand strategy and they founded a brand strategy firm in Seattle together and ran it all the way through 2019 when she then sold it to focus on PairTree. What is the whole concept of PairTree? What is it and how did you get into it? “The reason I got into it was because I went through it twice”, Erin says. She says one out of eight adults today are diagnosed with infertility and she tried everything to get pregnant. After spending three years trying and spending a fortune trying, and after her third miscarriage she and her husband decided to try the adoption route. They thought that this route was going to be easier but then they realized it was three times as expensive, and took two years. They were in a lucky position and heard that you don't have to use the conventional method to adopt and you can do it on your own. Expenses went down and so did the timeline. They took full control and hired a social worker, a lawyer, and started to look for an expecting mom. Within weeks they met with a woman from Michigan and sooner or later her son was born and they flew back and picked him up. Three years later they did it again. After going through it twice and having such great experiences, people started reaching out to them. They started helping other families in their spare time to teach them how to do what they did. She started looking into the industry and the market. With her brand background, she knew there was an opportunity for technology to make this industry more efficient and enjoyable. That was the seed for PairTree and the launching the first platform that has all the services a family would need for domestic private adoption. What are the milestones in the adoption process and the services that PairTree offers? Connecting people to a licensed social worker Matching- like online dating with the main focus on personality matching Legal- PairTree has curated a network with the best adoption attorneys in the U.S. Support- most adoptive families concentrate on going through milestone three but, really after that is when it gets really hard. These families need a ton of support afterward so PairTree is launching this fourth milestone to help these families after the adoption process. What is happening in the world right now such as Rode v.s. Wade, going to change the adoption industry? Erin says, “It will for sure change the adoption industry”. She says if women now have three choices and it gets narrowed down to just two then the adoption industry is going to expect a big change. She says they are doing everything they can to make sure that the adoption process is easy for those women who are going to have limited choices now. In your ideal world, what would this whole adoption process be like and some of the key aspects would you change? Erin says, “well we are changing them!”. She also says mainly access, because the cost is so high not everyone has the option to adopt, some families go into debt trying to afford adoption. Also, the adoption system is primarily faith-based, so families can pick and choose who they want, and sadly a lot of LGBTQ+ families, single-parent families, and older families, arent allowed to participate in the process. Erin and PairTree and trying to overcome these challenges.

In Episode 37 of the Business Leaders Breakfast Sam is joined by Hamish Munro, Founder and Director of Pairtree.   Hamish is a fifth generation farmer from Cumnock and has always been interested in technology and innovation.   In 1999, he positioned the cattle enterprise to supply beef to the European chilled beef market. This included the installation of a laptop and RFID scanner within the Cattle yards and incorporating (the now National Livestock Id Scheme) RFID Life Time tracking tags.   In 2018, Hamish was asked by NSW DPI to assist in finalising the Farm Decision Technology project run between two research sites in Orange and Molong.   Hamish than initiated a new business called Pairtree Intelligence and applied for the NSWDPI GATE program to refine the offering of what Pairtree really was and how to take it to market.   In 2019, Pairtree was successful in applying to the largest and longest running Agtech accelerator in Melbourne, SproutX, which also provided some pre-seed capital to the business. Pairtree now has over 80 national integration partners that can supply data to the Pairtree platform and start to make the daily operations for farmers more streamlined and more productive.   W: https://pairtree.co/

Abstract: Cancers are composed of multiple genetically distinct subpopulations of cancer cells. By performing genome sequencing on tissue samples from a cancer, we can infer the existence of these subpopulations, which mutations render them genetically unique, and the evolutionary relationships between subpopulations. This can reveal critical points in disease development and inform treatment. Here we present Pairtree, a new algorithm for constructing evolutionary trees that reveal relationships between genetically distinct cell subpopulations composing a patient's cancer. Pairtree focuses on performing these reconstructions using dozens of cancerous tissue samples per patient, which can be taken from different points in space (e.g., primary tumour and metastasis) or in time (e.g., at diagnosis and at relapse). In concert, these can reveal thirty or more distinct subpopulations, and show how their composition changed between tissue samples. Each additional tissue sample from a patient provides additional constraints on possible evolutionary histories, and so should aid construction of more accurate and precise results. Counterintuitively, we demonstrate using both simulated and real data that existing algorithms actually perform worse as additional tissue samples are provided, often failing to produce any result. Pairtree, conversely, efficiently leverages the information from additional samples to perform progressively better as samples are added. The algorithm's ability to function in these settings enables new biological and clinical applications, which we demonstrate using data from 14 acute lymphoblastic leukemia cancers, with dozens of tissue samples per cancer. Pairtree also produces a useful visual representation of the degree of support underlying evolutionary relationships present in the user's data, allowing users to make accurate inferences from its results.
