What CASAs are doing to help record number of kids in foster care

There are about 15,000 children in foster care and part of the child welfare system in Pennsylvania. Nearly half of those in foster care haven't found a job four years after leaving the system. Young women in foster care are two and a half times more likely to become pregnant by the age of 19. One county in Central Pennsylvania has a record number of foster children in the county's child dependency system right now. Dauphin County has more than 360 kids, ranging in age from infant to 17, in the system. Court Appointed Special Advocates or CASA has a mission to recruit, train, educate and supervise volunteers to work with these children and report back to the court to help a judge in placement. On The Spark Thursday, Will Foster, the Executive Director of Dauphin County CASA was asked why there are so many children in foster care now,"It's the time of year, but also you have to think globally that there are so many things going on in our society today that are causing a lot of strife for a lot of families. I mean, the working poverty level is higher than it was once upon a time or lower than it was. Families are just kind of struggling. Mental health issues seem to be a lot more prevalent. And when you have those kind of kind of things happening, you tend to get other side effects, which would be what a lot of our kids are experiencing." Kim St. Clair, CASA's Program Supervisor, was also on the program,"Our job is to talk to everyone in this child's life. Caseworker, bio mom, foster parent, teachers, coaches, whoever is in this child's life and bring all the information together so that judges can see a full picture of what this child's life looks like. And that helps them make the decisions. So within these reports, we pretty much have a template. We include all of those folks they are heading and underneath what we have found out from all of them, the end family concerns, family strengths and any recommendations we feel we can make because of what we know about this child and furthering their future and what what they need to have in it." The Dauphin County CASA has only 17 volunteers to work with the foster children and St. Clair said they could use more. CASA says children they've worked with are more likely to find a safe, permanent home and to succeed in school, and are half as likely to re-enter the foster care system.  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Being a new farmer trying to start out can be scary. From the investment, market volatility, land prices, and even trying to live up to what others are doing. There are many organizations working hard to provide support and resources to help new and younger farmers succeed. However, for a young farmer, figuring out where to begin can be stressful. With limited time and resources, the question becomes: Who do I talk to first? To address this issue, Wisconsin's Farm Center partnered with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) and the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) to create a valuable resource – the Wisconsin Beginning Farmer Resource Guide. “This resource guide is a blueprint for aspiring farmers, offering a step-by-step approach to building a new farm or agribusiness,” explains Dan Bauer, Program Supervisor at the Wisconsin Farm Center. “It breaks down the journey into several key phases and has a dedicated section to networking to help connect these new farmers with those already in the industry.” The guide covers the following topics: Brainstorming: Start by identifying your business idea. What kind of farm or agribusiness are you passionate about? Learning: Dive deep into understanding your chosen field. Education is crucial in any industry, and farming is no exception. Planning: Develop a business plan. A solid plan is the foundation for success in farming. Funding: Access to capital is essential. Whether it's for equipment purchases, marketing, or other expenses, you'll need financial support. Forming: This phase involves getting your legal and administrative affairs in order. You must establish your business as a recognized entity to reap the benefits. Operating: Once you have your idea, education, plan, and funding in place, you can officially start operating your business. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

David Robles is a Program Supervisor at the largest therapeutic residential non-profit in Oregon. For the last nine years he has worked with programs in California and Oregon where he has provided moment to moment support and therapeutic intervention to youth in need. He is also a second degree black belt in American Kenpo, dabbles in Brazilian Jiu-jitzu, is an esteemed member of Fort Liberty, and invests a disproportionate amount of his life in the valued pastimes of meal prep and personal grooming. David is one of Daniel's closest friends. They have traveled distant lands together–and one trip, it would not be hyperbole to say–was a true quest. They have bled together through both the creation of stories and more so through the living of our own. He has stood by Daniel during the most difficult moments of Daniel's life, embodying his values of safety, consistency, and not too much nor too little predictability. David's success in the betterment of himself and others has been a slow burn, amateur trending professional, and while he may not yet be the most interesting man in the world, there's still some black in his beard so there's probably time. Through sustained immersion within the teachings of great minds, and like Ron and Daniel aspire to do through Cutting For Sign, he has become increasingly articulate and emotionally aware, and yet remains shamelessly, and charmingly flawed. He values the light, the dark, the shadows between, that the cat is both be in and not in the box, the pursuit of mental stability amidst the chaos, heightened cognitive and physical performance, philosophy, religious experience, solution based thinking, nuanced and effective trauma therapy, and a continued drive to embody the truth at the core of the shortest poem in the English Language– "Me, we." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cutting-for-sign/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cutting-for-sign/support

Janelle Thomas, better known as Coach Nelly, has more than 20 years of experience coaching under her belt. In 2018, she birthed Raising Little Rippers, where she has created an educational resource for adventurous mamas, raising the next generation of big mountain skiiers. She's a treat to learn from!    Janelle Thomas started working as a Ski Instructor her senior year in college. She knew teaching littles to ski was right up her alley. Armed with a Degree in Psychology with a strong focus on Adventure Therapy, she had no idea that she would spend the next several years working in the ski industry. From Certified Ski Instructor, to Children's Program Supervisor, to Ski School Clinician, her specialty has always been working with children. As she started a family of her own, her biggest joy became raising her own three (not so little anymore) rippers, and she continued working as a part-time ski instructor season after season.     Skiing can be challenging financially and physically.     Risks and How to Mitigate Them:  Start in young years teaching simple things like moving to side of hill when you stop (pull over like a car), and being aware of environment   As they grow in skills and age, share nuggets of risk management along the way. Those become habits!  Teach how to merge on trail and how to give right of way   Take them out into environment and use actual moments as teachable moments    Raising Little Rippers:  Virtual coaching, but also meet ups with other mamas  Asks individually what mamas need for tips and tricks  Session also includes a movement analysis via videos sent - so you know where to go next  Shares drill and game videos to help them progress through next steps    When to Start Skiing:  Can start kids as young as 15-months, but will take longer to progress - so set expectations. Keep it fun! Introducing them to snow, weather, flat ground work  Kids 5 to 6-years-old will progress faster. Also depends on particular kid  Young age - start at home!! Grow interest, curiosity, and comfort. Be willing to go in and outside. Then work on teaching them to slide (can use edgy wedge or harness). Learn wedge downhill – think “pizza” shape, then learn turns to control speed     https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/teaching-tools-from-edgie-wedgie-to-ski-harness     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdbrRuc1TRo&ab_channel=RaisingLittleRippers    Learning as a Family:  Learn alongside kids. Can do family private lessons at some ski skills  Or adults can take lessons and then put the children in the child-specific lessons. After, come together and teach each other what you learned  Raising Little Rippers will help parents progress as well   How to Ski on a Budget [stay tuned in two weeks for another episode on this]:  Get to know local area – thrift and secondhand stores  Check during off-season for sales  Watch for ski swaps – usually right before season starts (October/November)  Handmedowns are wonderful!    https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/how-to-family-skiing-on-a-budget    Some Gear Tips:  Don't skimp on helmet; you don't want any gap between ski goggles and helmet  Young kids don't need ski poles  Use quality gear that is breathable, warm, dry (especially mittens or gloves)    Recommendations:  Shred Dog Convertible Children's Ski Bibs (grow for many seasons with the kids) - https://shreddog.com [https://www.raisinglittlerippers.com/blog/the-elevated-collection-shred-dog-gear-review]  Darn Tough Socks - https://darntough.com  Podcast: Ski Moms Fun Podcast - https://www.buzzsprout.com/1882919/9922299-teaching-your-kids-to-ski-with-nelly-thomas  The Great American Rail Trail - https://www.railstotrails.org/greatamericanrailtrail/route/    Follow Along:  www.raisinglittlerippers.com Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/raisinglittlerippers   Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/RaisingLittleRippers   You Tube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu3wl7KBxyncpZOMwH-PhZg    Thank you to Keen Footwear for sponsoring today's podcast! A full third of adolescents wit Autism are obese (2). 54 % of children with Autism are overweight or at a high risk of becoming overweight (3). Unfortunately, the current services available offering physical activity for this population is sorely lacking. They've got a team of fitness professionals, behaviour therapists, & board-certified behaviour analysts and they recognize this problem. They strive to create the best possible fitness experiences possible for this population and produce real meaningful health and wellbeing benefits. Evan has been in the field of social work for nearly a decade. Moved by this experience, he went on to receive his MSW where he focused on child welfare, LGBTQ youth, trauma and attachment. In addition to his MSW, Evan is also a LICSW and a has a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership. Evan was ecstatic to join SLM in 2012 as a Program Coordinator where he supported matches and developed SLM's LGBTQ Mentoring Initiative. In 2015, he transitioned to the role of Program Supervisor where he currently provides clinical supervision and oversees the daily functions and overall growth of the CBM program. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” -Psalm 147:3 tw: sexual assault and abuse When we experience trauma, there are complex layers of wounds that need healing in us. And as Kathleen Arnold, MSW shares in this episode of Take These Ashes, “that wound creates an opportunity for God.” Kathleen leads us in this conversation to discuss post-traumatic growth and the following: “Trauma is trauma.” Kathleen and Heather discuss how there’s no measuring stick for the hard things you’ve been through to compare it to the trauma of others. The definition of PTSD vs. C-PTSD and how trauma affects our bodies and brains How “negative” coping skills after experiencing trauma are actually part of our body’s strategy to try to survive Next steps towards growth and healing when someone becomes aware of their own trauma (and their own coping mechanisms to deal with that trauma) Seeing the “gold” from what we’ve been through—the Truth of who God is, how we see God and our stories, and how Jesus’s suffering relates to our own suffering here on earth How God uses His people to help us find safety and healing, and how to be a safe person for the people in your life   About this week's guest, Kathleen Arnold, MSW:  Kathleen Arnold is Program Director for Street Ransom, a Roanoke, Virginia-based ministry for juvenile survivors of sex trafficking. Kathleen has her bachelor’s degree from James Madison University in Global Justice Studies with a concentration in sex trafficking. Kathleen first began working with survivors of sex trafficking as the Program Supervisor at The Samaritan Women, a shelter for adult survivors of sex trafficking in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2015, Kathleen returned from Baltimore to the Roanoke Valley area and began working on the plans and programming for Street Ransom’s crisis shelter. In May of 2019 Kathleen graduated with her Master’s in Social Work to be better equipped for her position as Street Ransom’s Program Director.    Kathleen is a certified facilitator for a trafficking prevention curriculum called Not A #Number developed by Love146. She also has specific training on trauma, resilience, crisis intervention, de-escalation, and strengths based approach. ________ This episode is brought to you by RE-ROOTED: A 6-week growth journey for women (offered by Heather Lobe Johnson, Spring 2021). In another "No Children Required" episode, Amee talks to Ron Hertel, the Program Supervisor for Washington State's "Compassionate Schools" program. Building upon the groundbreaking research from the ACE's study (Adverse Childhood Experiences), educators and researchers are beginning to understand that a child's hardships, traumas or adversities they face at home have significant impacts on the skills they need to be successful in school. In fact, it is being seen that what was previously thought to be a "mental illness" in a child might actually only be symptomatic of their current, traumatic situation. This episode is for parents of children of all ages, educators and even adults who may have struggled in school and received a label but still carry with them into adult the lingering effects. Resources Mentioned on the EpisodeWhen we think of educating the whole child, their social and emotional development must be considered as a part of overall instruction.
