In this episode of Thriving Practice, host Tracy sits down with Michelle Bomberger, an innovative attorney and entrepreneur who's revolutionizing how small businesses, particularly healthcare practices, approach legal counsel. Michelle, founder of Equinox Business Law Group, shares her unique perspective on why having a strategic legal partner is not just about avoiding trouble, but about empowering practice owners to make confident decisions and seize growth opportunities. This conversation challenges the traditional view of legal services and offers a fresh, proactive approach that could transform how you manage risk and strategy in your healthcare practice. Episode Highlights: The concept of a "risk profile" for healthcare practices and how understanding it can lead to better decision-making Why having a generalist legal approach, similar to a primary care physician, can benefit your practice The importance of regular legal "check-ups" and how they can prevent major issues down the line Michelle's innovative fixed-price model that removes barriers to seeking legal advice The three-pronged framework for evaluating and managing risk: contracts, insurance, and entity structure How a proactive legal strategy can actually drive growth and opportunity in your practice The value of having a legal partner who understands both the healthcare industry and the entrepreneurial mindset Practical tips for finding and building a relationship with the right legal counsel for your practice Why it's okay (and important) for practice owners to admit when they don't know something about the business side of healthcare How the right legal support can empower not just owners but also practice managers to make better decisions Bio: Michelle Bomberger is the Founder and CEO of Equinox Business Law Group, bringing a unique blend of legal expertise and entrepreneurial insight to her role. Seattle residents and business owners are voicing their concerns about crime "perpetrated on a nearly hourly basis" and say people who commit assaults reemerge after their arrests to cause further chaos. Members of the downtown Seattle community that spoke with the Puget Sound Business Journal offered their own "horror stories" regarding crime and have called on the city to take swift action. They said that their concerns stem from increased drug activity and other crime in the downtown area of the city. In 2023, the number of violent crimes in downtown Seattle fell by 10% from 2022. It was the lowest number since 2018.
Seattle-area sustainably sourced sandwich restaurant chain, Homegrown, will be closing 10 stores — leaving only two. The closures mean more than 150 employees will be laid off. Homegrown CEO and co-founder Brad Gillis said, as reported by The Puget Sound Business Journal on Monday, that economic impacts, rising labor costs and food prices have led to the decision. “This decision was incredibly difficult to make, but one that we feel was absolutely necessary,” Gillis stated, according to The Business Journal.

Depending on who you overhear, conversations surrounding the controversial AI Chat Bot, Chat GPT, may be punctuated with terms like, “groundbreaking!” “paradigm-shifting!” “innovative!” or conversely might be filled with calls of “terrifying!” “mistake!” or “too far!” But peering through either lens, it is hard not to imagine that AI will diminish the necessity for human involvement, human experiences, or human ideas in some sense. Dr. Fei-Fei Li is a computer science professor at Stanford University and founding director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI. If “Human-Centered AI” sounds like an oxymoron to you, you probably maintain a strong conceptual divide between what is considered “human” and what is “machine.” Yet Li is of a group of scientists who envision a future where AI is designed with the intent to enhance the abilities of and empower real human beings. Li's own story is one of struggle, passion, and resilience. Immigrating from China, her family faced the difficult transition from their home country's middle class, into American poverty. Despite struggling to care for her ailing mother, who worked tirelessly to establish a foothold in their new land, Li maintained a passion and natural aptitude for physics. Now Li is releasing her new book entitled, The Worlds I See. In this reflection on life and AI, the Stanford professor presents a clear explanation of the term artificial intelligence, as well as a personal saga that demonstrates the ardor and creativity involved in producing even the most technical scholarship. Join Dr. Li at Town Hall Seattle, where the AI expert will make a case for human-centric approaches in developing this new technology. Fei-Fei Li is a computer science professor at Stanford University and founding director of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI as well as a founder and chairperson of the board of the nonprofit AI4ALL. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Todd Bishop is GeekWire's co-founder, a longtime business and technology journalist who reports on subjects including AI, the cloud, startups, and health technology, plus Amazon and Microsoft, in addition to hosting GeekWire's weekly podcast. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Leslie Feinzaig. Leslie grew up in Costa Rica. She describes her family as immigrants to that country who endured hard lives. She came to the US as a Visa-dependent business school student and soon realized that staying here for her career while still tethered to a Visa required her to take jobs with large companies who could sponsor her. This meant continually working for her resume. But Leslie is an entrepreneur at heart, and this was frustrating. Ultimately, she got a Green Card and everything for Leslie shifted. That's when she developed her “What's the Worst that Could Happen” approach that led her to start her own venture capital firm where she's letting her resume work for her. Leslie is the Founder and General Partner of Graham & Walker, an early-stage VC fund investing in women-founded tech companies that solve deeply human problems, and the Female Founders Alliance, the most prominent community of VC-backable women founders in the US. Leslie is a technologist, operator and startup founder described as an "industry trailblazer" by USA Today. Born and raised in Costa Rica, she was named one of Forbes Magazine's Most Powerful Women from Central America, Worth Magazine's Worthy 100, Puget Sound Business Journal 40 Under 40, and Seattle Magazine's Most Influential People. She has a Bachelor's degree from the London School of Economics and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She is an acclaimed contributing writer for Fortune, Fast Company and Techcrunch.
