Spine surgery with Dr. Pat Johnson
Up until July of 2021 college athletes couldn't make money off their own name, image, or likeness. While schools and conferences and the NCAA raked in hundreds of millions of dollars a year, the student-athletes who were putting on the show were mostly left out to dry. That all changed last summer with some new NIL legislation. And Pat Johnson saw an opportunity to build a business in a completely untouched industry. So Vantage Sports was born. It's an online platform that connects current college athletes with prospective college athletes (i.e. high school or middle school students) for 1-on-1 training or group sessions; allowing college athletes to make money from their name and for younger athletes to get training from the best in the biz. It's a win win. We talked all about how Pat birthed this idea WELL before the NIL legislation went into place, the struggles of raising funds to push the business forward, and how he's leveraging partnerships to elevate the brand. If you want to check out the Vantage platform you can find them over at vantagesports.com or on Instagram @vantagesports_nil We're getting weird with things on social. You should follow along. Johnson has always wanted to be a Notre Dame leprechaun. As a kid, who came to Irish games and thought the leprechaun was the coolest thing and even dressed up as the leprechaun for Halloween. But it took a lot of faith and a lot of 'refusing to quit' to not only become a leprechaun but to even get to Notre Dame Thank you to Notre Dame Federal Credit Union for being the title sponsor of Irish Sports Saturday: notredamefcu.com/ ----- Live: www.redeemerradio.com or download the Redeemer Radio App Follow Redeemer Radio 95.7 Sports on social media:www.facebook.com/957Sports www.twitter.com/957Sports Follow Redeemer Radio on Social Media:www.Facebook.com/RedeemerRadio www.Twitter.com/RedeemerRadio Subscribe to the Podcast: Apple | Google Play | AnchorFM | Spotify | RSS Redeemer Radio is the non-profit Catholic radio station serving the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

ALL GOD'S CHILDREN by Betsy P. Skinner The inspiration for this story is the courage and faith of women who, across the ages, heard Spirit’s call and answered, in spite of convention, resistance, even death. The author crafts a tale about one such woman: The Reverend Calline Simpson, first female minister of High Dunes First United Congregational Church. Spanning a period of six months, late 1980s, the action takes place in the fictional town of High Dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan. Serendipity, and the theology, personality, age, ethnicity and agenda of the characters collide to rock the foundation of the 150-year-old church. While the congregation splits over hiring an out gay man (the A.I.D.S. epidemic is rife), the minister torments herself for violating The Code. Nothing less than a near-death experience can shift the minister’s theology and self- appraisal, and nothing more than divine alchemy can bring all God’s children to sing their Hallelujahs. “Simply stated, I loved this story. The characters were compelling, the story was littered with nice moments and surprises and the writing had a unique, one-of-a-kind feel. Fresh.” Stephen Parolini -“Noveldoctor” “This brings insight to the many demands on ministers. Every parishioner expects you to drop everything and be there for them NOW. The story definitely held my attention. “ -Pat Johnson, educator “I want you to know how much I enjoyed your book. Well written, a good plot and story. It’s a good description of a small church with believable characters. Congratulations.” -Uncle Doc Betsy is a retired United Church of Christ minister who lives in north central Florida. Since retiring from full time ministry she has authored her novel, worked as a freelance writer, trained and ridden mules, taught and tutored elementary-aged children, and helps take care of her elder mother. She is a native of the southern U.S. and tends a small hobby farm and seven critters. https://www.amazon.com/All-Gods-Children-Betsy-Skinner/dp/1796072265/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=All+God%27s+Children+Betsy+Skinner&qid=1589594262&s=books&sr=1-1 http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/bskinner.mp3
Don't get mad! I've come to realize that having three artists per week is unsustainable for now. The members of todays show aren't necessarily new to the scene, but their formation is. Floracene is the byproduct of two previous bands residing in Stratford, New Jersey. I sit down with lead singer and song writer, Pat Johnson who shares two currently released songs with me on Song Reach, "Rollercoaster" and "Bruises", both of which have interesting backgrounds we can all relate too. I first met Jim McElroy when he facilitated a workshop through our local St. Louis chapter of Contemplative Outreach in St. Louis. Although very soft-spoken and quite humble, Jim's presence and teaching immediately took me to a deeper place in my Centering Prayer practice. Recently I was at another workshop, and I was spellbound listening to Jim tell stories about the earliest days in the 1990’s when several people from Contemplative Outreach realized that they were all also in 12-step recovery program. Over the course of several retreats they began to create what is now the Centering Prayer 12-Step international outreach program. Centering Prayer 12-Step Outreach helps people create a foundation of prayer and meditation to support sobriety and 12-step awakening. For those of you not familiar with the 12-steps, the 11th step reads: "Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of God's will for us and the power to carry that out." Many people in a spiritual program of recovery from addiction find Contemplative practices like Centering Prayer and others to be a major support for sobriety and emotional stability through some pretty dark stuff. Whether or not you're in a program of spiritual recovery from addiction, the insights in this episode provide some helpful clues for dealing with the human condition. Gerald May, the author of the classic book Addiction and Grace, says that to be human is to be addicted. We all struggle with addictions, big and small. The Buddha taught that all suffering is caused by attachment and desire, so this interview will be helpful no matter who or where you are, 'cuz we're all struggling with some kind of addictions and attachments. After we recorded the show, Jim wanted me to mention a few people to whom we owe a huge debt of gratitude in building the 12-Step Outreach network. Although I have Jim's permission to use his full name, in 12-step tradition I will only use first names to give these folks credit. They include, Dave, Jenny, Joelle, Joann, Kate, Joe, Christophe, and a special thanks to Fr. Thomas Keating, Abbot Joseph Boyle, and Pat Johnson.

Not long after moving the US Demura got a gig doing martial arts demonstrations at the Japanese Deer Park, a local attraction in California. The shows were different from martial arts demonstrations of the day, which showcased martial artists coming close but not making contact. Demura's demonstrations featured people reacting to this near contact, making it look like a fight. While there were likely others offering demonstrations this way, these demos at the Deer Park were certainly popularized by Fumio Demura and he's sometimes credited with developing the method. He was the stunt double for Pat Morita, who played Miyagi, in the karate kid movies. It was Chuck Norris who introduced Demura to the production people for The Karate Kid. He was originally intended to be Miyagi, but he knew his English wasn't good enough. From there he became the stunt double. It's hard to talk about Fumio Demura without mentioning the amazing movie from 2015, The Real Miyagi. What started as a crowdfunding project really turned into an amazing film. It's a well-done documentary on the life of Shihan Demura and it's available on Netflix as well as DVD. The cast is a who's who of martial artists and martial arts actors, including Billy Blanks, Pat Johnson, Dolph Lundgren, Pat Morita, Christine Bannon Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Bill Wallace, Michael Jai White and many more.
