Thanks for the years of laughs, everybody
November 6th 2011, Scott Davis found what seemed like the perfect opportunity on Craigslist: a job in Caldwell, Ohio offering $300 a week to live and work on a farm, complete with free housing and utilities. Eager to secure the position, Scott responded to the ad and a week later received a response. He arranged to meet the employer for breakfast at Shoney's. But what began as a promising encounter soon spiraled into a nightmare. Scott found himself fighting for his life in a twist he never saw coming.
Across America, Big Boy restaurants are long known for their double-decker burgers and statues of their chubby mascot outside the front door. The restaurant is a franchise, so many areas of the country have different parent companies. It all started with Bob's in California. For many years, the Pennsylvania locations were named Eat and Park. In Ohio, people know them as Frisch's. And for many years, Shoney's was a part of the chain. In many places, the longtime favorite has all but disappeared. And they could be going away soon in the areas where they remain. They look to be another iconic brand fading away... The terrible reviews keep on coming! A Cold Stone Creamery location, where the new owners are fighting their way uphill, to overcome mountains of bad reviews... and garbage. An open air flea market, where the birds are sick, and the churros are stale. A Shoney's restaurant where flies are confused for bacon bits. A new Worst Restaurant in America is crowned! A restaurant so bad, I don't think my Dad (my guest this week) will ever let me live it down: Shoney's Buffet soups shouldn't have such a thick skin over them that the ladle rests on top...right?? What's Going On Over There with Shoney's thinking they deserve their own food truck? The service team surprises me with a little extra cook time on my steak, despite my wishes to the contrary Fan of the show Travis recounts the story of when Scott Steiner threw him out of a Shoney's! Seriously, a steak cooked this long can only be described as Way Too Much! The previous worst restaurant, GattiTown scored a 2.70 on the Tchotchke of Mediocrity. How much worse can Shoney's be? What we ate: Fries Breakfast Potatoes Eggs Pancakes Slim Jim Sandwich Steak Shoney's World Famous Hot FudgeCake Heinz 57 "Fine" Dining is now on video! Traveled across the country for this! Coming to you from the mountains of North Carolina, I bring you the Eat Deets for Shoney's with my very own Dad Shoney's has undergone a few name changes, including being a part of the Big Boy franchise A brand that once grew to over 1,800 restaurants is dwindling in the post-pandemic restaurant landscape, now down to 81 (as of 2024) Racist hiring practices landed Shoney's on the receiving end of the largest discrimination settlement ever (at the time) A Yelper literally dumps all over the whole town in this week's Yelp from Strangers "Fine" Dining is now on video! Edible straws? Actress, foodie, and comedian Katie Molinaro joined me for maybe the weirdest meal yet, as we were total fish out of water at the American Girl Cafe I made an impulse buy and got a doll chihuahua named Barker Posey The stalls in the bathrooms have hooks so you can take your doll with you, and that's Way Too Much... The service team had a noteworthy amount of men on it, and one of them's name tag didn't match his employee badge which makes us wonder What's Going On Over There? What we ate this week: Cinnamon Buns Glitter Bomb for my Sprite + an Edible Straw Ch**se-Topped Cucumber Fruit Skewer Meatballs, Marinara, & Ravioli French Fries Turkey Club The AG Burger with Tomato Bacon Jam & Fried Egg on a Pretzel Bun Chocolate Mousse in a Flower Pot Katie details the best and worst restaurants she's ever been to in the Calibration Station "Fine" Dining is now on video! This week, John and Dcn. Jeff Drzycimski dive into the vital role of deacons in the church and the unique calling that it represents Get ready for some laughs as they reminisce about Shoney's gift cards, McDonald's fries, and Deacon Jeff's amusing adventures in Italy (aka Pizza with the Pope). They discuss everything from the joy of serving in the diaconate to the importance of prayer and intercessory roles in the church. Dcn. Jeff shares his personal journey of rediscovering his faith, the fulfilling path to becoming a deacon, and why it's crucial for men to consider this vocation. They explore the historical significance of deacons, their essential roles in modern parishes, and the unique perspective they bring to the ministry.
In the second hour of the Chase and Big Joe Show, Chase, and Big Joe continue their conversation on what major sports team in Nashville will win the first championship. What do you think? Later in the hour big Joe mentioned Shoney's and Nick went on a tangent about food later in the conversation. Chase mentioned football weddings, and that is probably a no-go. To end the show as always with celebrity birthdays. Who do you think will win? Let us know. Listen to hear more.
This week, Nathan answers Cheryl's question about flowering annuals that the deer won't eat! She tried begonia, but they were munched on like lunch time at the Shoney's salad bar. Nathan talks about a long list of plants that the deer MIGHT not eat. After all, if they're hungry enough, right? From salvia, lantana, verbena, and dusty miller to alyssum, nasturtium, ageratum, and angelonia, there are surely plenty of annuals you can enjoy that the deer won't!
Dateline – Terminus: It's sweet that you guys noticed that we hadn't commented on the news about Apple TV's Foundation being renewed for Season 3! But that isn't exactly what happened; we did, in fact, talk about it on S5E04. Unfortunately, we've all been super busy and the post-production train has a metaphorical Bishop's Claw on the tracks. Believe me, you don't want to mess with one of those. That episode will be out in a couple of days. But when the news about David Goyer and his status as showrunner dropped, we decided to do something different. Here's our first special bulletin! Me, I'm hoping for huge budget cuts! Let's strip it down until it looks like a production of Our Town and put The Great and Glorious Az‘s vision on full conversational display. And let's lean into it! How about a long monologue by Jared Harris, shot on location in a Shoney's men's room about how little plumbing has changed in 12000 years? I'd watch that! Thanks for your dedication to Stars End and never fear! We'll be getting caught up as quickly as we can.
Pat is a lifelong friend. He is also a husband, business leader, and father to three beautiful children. Two of which reside only in their family's hearts and memories.Tragedy struck the Schoennagel's lives not once, but twice, and sadly claimed the lives of two of their beautiful children. While this story is hard to listen to, it also has a silver lining. Pat, his wife Melissa, and their son John refuse to "not live life "simply because that is what their daughter Lia would have wanted them to do!Listen in as Pat and I have a genuine discussion about how he and his continue to thrive, despite dealing with the worst-case scenario, the sudden death of a child. They are so committed to honoring their stillborn son Christopher and daughter Lia, that they have heavily involved in a charity Lia's Wings that provides air transport for children and families who are in medical need. Pat's goal is to "be able to say yes to everyone".Pat, thank you for taking the time to reconnect with me after so many years! Your family's story may be one of the most tragic, yet inspiring stories I have ever heard, and I appreciate you sharing it and living it the way you do. The world is better off with people like you in it. Love you friend.

Host Dave Fiore speaks with Jeri Desloge, the owner of Jeri's Midtown Café (now Jeri's Eventful Kitchen), Jeri's Love on a Plate and Simply Entertaining by Jeri. And while that may seem like a lot for the popular restaurateur to keep up with, Jeri has spent a lifetime working hard, going the extra mile and doing whatever it takes to make people happy. The native of Clewiston, Fla., was raised in the shadow of the area's sugarcane mill, where she played sports, was class president and rocked the saxophone. She first fell in love with Tallahassee attending FSU band camps and was determined to one day return. Jeri's first food job was at a Shoney's as a server before transferring to the Tallahassee Outback, enrolling at Kaiser and helping to open multiple Red Elephant locations. Eventually, all roads led to the popular Paisley Cafe in Midtown, where she would assume ownership just months before COVID would temporarily shut her down. After first thinking she would lose everything, Jeri says it was the best thing to happen to the industry because it forced positive business decisions that are still paying off today. It paid off personally as well, as she met her husband, Bryan Desloge, then a Leon County Commissioner, in a meeting with a group of colleagues to complain about the county's COVID policies. Jeri talks about her love for Tallahassee, the importance of her faith and her dreams for the future.

The guys talk about the burger cook-off this Friday before hitting on the fact that Bo didn't listen to any Taylor Swift when he was jamming out last night at home. While talking about SEC football transfers, the guys somehow get onto Elvis Presley and going to Graceland to see his private jet and shag carpet. Bo gives his thoughts on the Rebels dismissing former Texas A&M receiver Chris Marshall and targeting Michigan State receiver Keon Coleman to replace him. The guys discuss the lack of premier receiver talent for Ole Miss compared to recent history and talk about the importance of landing the highly-touted transfer out of Michigan State. With another sports betting scandal in college athletics being uncovered, this time at Iowa, Bo and Blake discuss the archaic approach to sports betting that the NCAA takes when it comes to governing its student-athletes and coaches. The guys debate the "constitutionality" of rules that allow non-athletes at Universities to place bets on sports while athletes can't do the same. Learn more about your ad choices. In my opinion there's only one place in town to get a classic, down home breakfast experience where, if you're lucky, the server calls you hun. I had the great pleasure of sitting down with two of the wonderful personalities that make Cloverleaf go ‘round, Therese Vernon & Jessica Chandler. Join us as we talk about what it's like serving and managing at one of the busiest places in town. Therese and I dive into our time working together under the original owners at Sweet Grass and Jessica tells stories from her time at Shoney's and beyond. After a few minutes of chatting with these two, you'll quickly realize why Cloverleaf is truly the “Workingman's Friend"!! Few full-service restaurant chains have seen the steep ups and downs of Shoney's, a brand that once dominated family dining. It also sported one of the most ill-fitting management teams ever to occupy a C-suite. No wonder it was one of the most talked-about chains of the 1980s and '90s, only to fly out of mind before you can say "breakfast bar." What humbled a brand that appeared to have so much momentum? On the occasion of Shoney's 75th anniversary, Restaurant Rewind is strapping into the rollercoaster to relive those climbs and plummets. Host and Editor At Large goes all the way back to the chain's beginnings with an entrepreneurial college football star who was once headed for the Brooklyn Dodgers—the NFL team, not the better-known baseball squad that followed. It's a story of amazingly bad behavior and considerable hubris, with good intensions ultimately prevailing. And, as Romeo notes, the story is still being written.
Lettuce prices are skyrocketing. On the Border and Shoney's have been rolling back prices. And Marketing has been a big help to McDonald's.
