In this podcast, Greg Voisen sits down with Steven Kotler, author of We Are as Gods: A Survival Guide for the Age of Abundance, to explore the hidden dark side of exponential technology. Kotler explains that while humanity now wields "godlike" powers capable of biblical-scale miracles, our Paleolithic brains are suffering from massive information overload, leading to decision fatigue and a dangerous, voluntary surrender of our own cognition to AI. This episode serves as a vital survival guide, leaning on cutting-edge neuroscience to prove how reclaiming our focus through flow states, creativity, and active play is no longer just a luxury—it is biologically mandatory to prevent our minds from atrophying in a world of overwhelming abundance.

What happens to human beings in a world without scarcity? If all our needs were met, would we actually be better off? Will technological progress lead to utopia or collapse?Humans are living through massive improvements in material conditions. More people have access to food, energy, and technology than ever before. Steven Kotler examines what this kind of abundance does to us. It may support a more comfortable life, but it can also erode the conditions that sustain a sense of purpose. We also discuss how attention and identity are being affected by technological progress. As AI systems take on more optimization and decision-making, the role of human thought may change, raising questions about what remains distinctly human in how we engage with the world.Read Peter Diamandis' and Kotler's book, 'We Are as Gods,' here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/We-Are-as-Gods/Peter-H-Diamandis/Exponential-Technology-Series/9781668099544Chapters:[00:00] Introduction to Steven Kotler[00:15] Universe 25 and the Problem of Abundance[03:06] Mouse Dynamics and Human Parallels[10:30] Abundance, Individuality, and Meaning[17:18] Tradeoffs of Abundance[27:31] The Impact of Overload and Burnout[32:59] Skepticism About AI and Technology[46:53] Population and Ecological Pressures[54:52] Human Creativity in an AI World

What if the way we think about markets is fundamentally changing? And what if the bigger question isn't just how we sell—but what kind of economy and society we are building? On this episode of The Brian Crombie Hour, Brian sits down with Philip Kotler—widely regarded as the father of modern marketing—for a far-reaching conversation on marketing, artificial intelligence, and the future of capitalism. In Part 1, Kotler reflects on the evolution of marketing—from the classic 4Ps (product, price, place, promotion) to a broader, more human framework centered on People, Purpose, and Planet. As consumers grow more informed and skeptical, branding, pricing, and values are playing an increasingly central role in decision-making.In Part 2, the conversation turns to AI and its growing influence on consumer behavior. As people rely less on traditional advertising and more on AI-driven insights, marketers face a new reality—one that demands a balance between technological efficiency and human creativity. But this discussion goes far beyond business. In Part 3, Kotler explores the state of capitalism itself, raising critical questions about inequality, wealth concentration, and the limits of GDP as a measure of success. He introduces the idea of an “index of the common good” and points to Nordic models as examples of more balanced, humane economic systems. Finally, in Part 4, the focus shifts to democracy—its current challenges, declining civic engagement, and the growing disconnect between institutions and citizens. Because ultimately, economic systems and political systems are deeply intertwined—and both are under strain. This episode asks a bigger question:In a world shaped by AI, shifting markets, and rising inequality… can we build a system that is both innovative—and humane?

Marketing legend Professor Philip Kotler joins the Web3 CMO Stories podcast to challenge conventional thinking about customer dissatisfaction.Drawing from the groundbreaking book "Zero Complaints" by his colleague Gautam Mahajan, Kotler reveals six critical propositions that reshape how forward-thinking organizations should approach complaint management. Most strikingly, he shares that poorly handled complaints may be suppressing company revenues by 16-20% – a figure that should command immediate attention from any executive."CMOs should want every complaint to come up to them on a list every week," Kotler advises, highlighting the strategic value of having marketing leaders personally diagnose the root causes of customer dissatisfaction. Whether problems stem from personnel issues or product development flaws, this visibility creates accountability and drives improvement. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when host Joeri Billast shares his own consumer behavior – specifically how he scrutinizes one-star reviews and company responses when researching products. Innovate without needing to update your legacy tech stack. FinovateEurope Best of Show winner Tweezr explains how. Detailed episode description: In this episode, Greg sits down with FinovateEurope Best of Show winner Tweezr to learn more about their innovative approach to maintaining and modifying complex legacy systems. Co-founders Ohad Kotler and Lior Vernia created Tweezr to help financial institutions modernize without replacing their core systems. By enabling developers to make precise code changes without breaking critical functionality, Tweezr saves time and makes legacy systems more maintainable. The co-founders share their experiences working with banks and the significant challenges posed by outdated technology, emphasizing that the inability to swiftly update core systems hinders digital transformation efforts. The discussion also highlights the severe bottlenecks legacy systems create for banks, making even simple modifications a lengthy and costly process. Tweezr acts as a guiding tool (rather than an automated coding system), helping developers navigate millions of lines of code efficiently. It identifies necessary modifications, warns of potential breakages, and significantly reduces the time required to implement changes. By doing so, Tweezr empowers financial institutions to innovate without being bogged down by their outdated infrastructure. Tweezr's AI-driven approach focuses on bridging the maintainability gap, allowing banks to continue using their legacy systems without full-scale modernization. Instead of replacing core banking software—a process that can take years—banks can use Tweezrr to optimize and maintain their existing technology stack. The now-infamous (somewhat) personal Zoom Q&A state senator Elena Parent (D) and one of her constituents - Lena Kotler - got a lot of attention because of but a few minutes of the dialogue. Like most people, I heard it and focused just on that portion because of the mushy messaging Senator Parent exhibited with regards to the rights of the imprisoned who are trans. It's a party problem more than a "Parent problem," dating as far back as last summer. That's when Trump campaign attack ads tied former VP Kamala Harris to the existence of the right for trans prisoners to have gender reassignment surgeries using taxpayer dollars. Neither Harris nor did any Democrat(s) codify that right; it's a "Constitutional" thing, and that's the shortest, simplest response no one on the business end of the attack has embraced. Nonetheless, there's WAY more to that "Elena Parent v trans mom" conversation, and the senator deserves it to be heard. Frankly, Kotler was completely out-of-line, over-the-top and belligerent to an unruly degree. Her tone, tenure and language to Parent was beyond reproach and warrants an apology, but who apologizes anymore, right? I'm honestly stuneed Senator Parent stayed on the call as long as she did, and she's to be commended for that. Take a listen for yourself and tell me what you think.

On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we look back on a fascinating deep dive with renowned author and peak performance expert Steven Kotler. The conversation centers around Kotler's book, "The Art of Impossible," which explores the intricate relationship between motivation, neurobiology, and the pursuit of extraordinary achievements. This episode will break down the key insights to help you harness your potential and achieve remarkable results. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go.   Understanding Intrinsic Motivation Steven Kotler begins by unpacking the concept of intrinsic motivation, which he identifies as a crucial driver for human performance. He highlights five key elements: Curiosity, Passion, Purpose, Autonomy, and Mastery. These components not only fuel our desire to excel but also enhance our focus and engagement in activities. Kotler emphasizes that these intrinsic motivators are hardwired into our biology, suggesting that when we align our actions with these motivators, we can achieve remarkable results with less effort. Kotler illustrates this point by referencing the neurochemicals involved in passion and love, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine. He recalls the intense focus and attention one experiences when falling in love, noting that this heightened state of awareness comes effortlessly. This natural inclination towards passion and engagement, he argues, is a testament to our biological design, which favors extraordinary achievements.   The Consequences of Not Going Big A striking assertion made by Kotler is that not striving for greatness can have detrimental effects on our well-being. He argues that human beings are inherently wired for extraordinary accomplishments, and failing to pursue big goals can lead to negative outcomes. This perspective challenges conventional views on motivation and success, suggesting that complacency can be harmful. Kotler points out that many of the issues plaguing modern society, such as depression and anxiety, can be linked to a lack of meaningful work and engagement. He identifies eight major causes of depression, two of which—genetics and severe trauma—are often highlighted. However, he emphasizes that these factors account for less than half of the equation. The remaining causes are rooted in our biology and motivation, particularly the absence of work that aligns with our values, passions, and the opportunity for mastery.   The Importance of Meaningful Work One of the most significant insights from Kotler's discussion is the idea that meaningful work is essential for mental health and fulfillment. He explains that when individuals engage in work that lacks curiosity, passion, or autonomy, they are more likely to experience feelings of emptiness and depression. This lack of alignment with intrinsic motivators can lead to a sense of stagnation and dissatisfaction. Kotler argues that the modern workforce often overlooks the importance of these intrinsic motivators, leading to widespread disengagement. He stresses that when people are not allowed to pursue their passions or develop their skills, they miss out on the flow state—a mental state of complete immersion and focus that is crucial for peak performance. When was the last time you were in a flow state?  As we enter this final stretch before Thanksgiving, I want to share some insights inspired by The Art of Impossible by Steven Kotler. Kotler explores how to harness our biology to enter "flow"—that highly focused, energized state where we lose track of time. At this busy time of year, it's a great opportunity to use our strengths to achieve flow more often. Think about strengths as your natural gateway to flow. For example, if Learner is in your top strengths, you may find flow in skill acquisition. If Competition ranks high for you, you might feel in flow in high-stakes situations or by setting up small, daily challenges. This week, I encourage you to reflect on a recent flow experience: when was the last time you lost track of time, and what strength were you using? Diamandis and Steven Kotler argue that despite popular belief, the world is actually getting better in many ways. They discuss how advancements in technology, specifically exponential growth in fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology, can help address some of the world's biggest challenges, such as poverty, disease, and environmental degradation. The authors provide examples of innovative solutions that are already making a positive impact, such as 3D printing, solar power, and mobile technology. They also emphasize the power of collaboration and entrepreneurship in driving progress and creating abundance for all. Ultimately, Diamandis and Kotler are optimistic about the future and believe that with the right mindset and resources, we can create a world of abundance for all.Chapter 2:The Theme of Abundance"Abundance" by Peter H. Diamandis explores the concept of exponential technologies and their potential to solve humanity's biggest problems. The book presents several key plot points, character developments, and thematic ideas that contribute to its overall message:1. Plot Points:- The book opens with a discussion on the exponential growth of technology and how it has the potential to create abundant resources for all of humanity.- Diamandis introduces the concept of the "Six Ds of Exponentials" (digitization, deception, disruption, demonetization, dematerialization, and democratization) to explain how technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and biotechnology are rapidly advancing.- The narrative follows various case studies and real-world examples of how these technologies are already making a positive impact, such as providing clean drinking water, affordable healthcare, and renewable energy.2. Character Development:- While there are no specific characters in the traditional sense, Diamandis himself can be considered the central figure in the book. As the author and co-founder of Singularity University, he takes readers on a journey through the possibilities of exponential technologies and inspires them to believe in a future of abundance.- Through his writing, Diamandis demonstrates a deep passion for innovation and a strong belief in the power of human creativity to solve the world's problems.3. Thematic Ideas:- One of the main thematic ideas in "Abundance" is the notion that we are living in a time of unprecedented progress and opportunity. Diamandis argues that we have the tools and resources to address global challenges like poverty, disease, and environmental degradation if we embrace the potential of exponential technologies.- The book also explores the role of entrepreneurs, innovators, and visionaries in driving positive change. Diamandis highlights the importance of taking risks, thinking creatively, and collaborating with others to make a meaningful impact on society.- Additionally, "Abundance" challenges readers to shift their mindset from one of scarcity and fear to one of abundance and possibility. By adopting an attitude of abundance, Diamandis suggests that we can unlock our full potential and create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations.Overall, "Abundance" serves as a thought-provoking manifesto for embracing the transformative power of technology and working together to create a more prosperous and sustainable world.Chapter 3:Meet the Writer of AbundancePeter H. We're closer than ever to being able to upload our minds and become “digitally immortal.” But should we?  What if our minds could live after our bodies have died? What if mortality became obsolete? Steven Kotler, award-winning journalist and executive director of the Flow Research Collective, has studied these seemingly sci-fi ideas, and it turns out that they're not so fictional, after all. In fact, mind-uploading technology is expected to be available as early as 2045. “Digital immortality” would have its upsides; we could preserve the minds of modern geniuses and have their guidance through future conflicts. Or, alternatively, things could get dark, as we have never before interfered with such complex evolutionary processes. Kotler explains that the ability to store human personalities and consciousness on computers poses profound ethical and societal questions. By developing and using this mind-uploading technology, we are simultaneously redefining what it means to be a human being, pushing the boundary between life, death, and whatever is in between. It seems, whether we're ready or not, that it is going to happen soon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ❍ About The Well ❍ Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life's biggest questions, and that's why they're the questions occupying the world's brightest minds. So what do they think? How is the power of science advancing understanding? How are philosophers and theologians tackling these fascinating questions? Let's dive into The Well.

Steven Kotler believes that middle-aged adults are better learners than kids, and he has the Ivy League studies to back it up.In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Kotler, the bestselling author of Gnar Country: Growing Ould, Staying Rad, and a true expert in the field of peak performance and human potential. In Gnar Country, Kotler explores the world of extreme sports and the science behind what drives these athletes to push themselves to their limits. He also talked about how this kind of play can lead to a state of "flow," which is when we're completely absorbed in the activity we're engaged in and time seems to fly by.Kotler also discussed the idea of "peak performance aging," which is the notion that we can continue to improve and achieve our goals well into our later years. He shared the latest research on how our brains and bodies age, and how we can use this knowledge to stay healthy, happy, and productive as we get older. Kotler's compiled research suggests that 'cognitive superpowers' exist which aren't neurologically available to younger humans, but there are four conditions required in order to tap into those abilities:By age 30: Solve the crisis of identity.Be age 40: Create a tight-knit match between your identity and your principal activity.By age 50: Exhibit forgiveness and empathy for yourself and others. In your 50s: Regularly engage in challenging and creative activities. We covered a lot of ground in this interview, from the science of flow to the keys to achieving your goals, and everything in between.
