This month's countertop chat with host Justin Baker will feature special guest, MWI Animal Health's Pet Whisperer Alison Hodgson, as they “paw-nder” a new non-PBM revenue generating revenue opportunity that is near and dear to all of us.  Being a growing $3B retail and $19B pet OTC market, studies have shown that pet owners want to purchase pet products for their fur babies from someone they can trust, putting this “paw-some” “opp-purr-tunity” for independent pharmacies at the top of that list.  This booming new market segment is positioned “purr-fectly” for independents, as these animal-y-tics shared that; 45% of Americans buy their pet a birthday gift 73% of Americans let their pets sit on the couch 95% consider their pet part of the family   Alison points out that her research demonstrates that most families want to get their medications for ALL of their family members in one place (including their fur babies), and that high income households account for roughly 60% of the spending, because money is no object, with our four- legged friends.  As you develop your stores personal brand, this niche will build loyalty like no other, will garner a profitable cash business, and “dif-fur-entiate” your store from the chains.  From passing out dog treats in your drive through window, to “pet-working” with local veterinarians, Alison shares tips and tricks on how to gain visibility and market share.  The growth “pet-ential is limitless”.

When it comes to the fight against the novel coronavirus, we need all hands on deck and it turns out there may be some toes on deck as well. An unlikely species is being investigated to see if it could be a vital ally with humans in the fight against COVD-19. Llamas, and other camelids, produce a specialized type of antibodies which are known as nanobodies. Scientists are investigating if those same nanobodies could help prevent the novel coronavirus from entering a host cell. Does this research have real teeth? Does it have potential to work? Dr. Robert Callan - a professor at Colorado State University Livestock Medicine and Surgery Service - not only discusses whether this research has promise, but we also discuss the potential challenges the researchers may face, basics of camelid medicine, why llamas spit, and so many other fun facts about camelids. Will students get the education they desperately need and want? New veterinary graduates are the next generation tasked with protecting and preserving animal and human health. Because their educational experience has been upended, many veterinary schools will have to enact permanent changes. Whether it’s distance learning, resolving basic technical issues, access to learning materials, Internet access, how students can receive and turn in assignments; and how students can be assessed and graded by their professors, there are so many questions to answer about how to educate young veterinary students in the midst of a pandemic. Happiness in the workplace. We’re all striving to achieve it and for some of us every day can be a challenge. As caregivers, we naturally prioritize care for others and frequently neglect taking care of ourselves. Our mental health eventually suffers which is one reason why so many veterinarians experience emotional distress in the workplace. That’s why veterinary medicine as a profession is working so hard to better understand how to improve workplace well being. The urgency of the moment is particularly acute with studies indicating that veterinarians are much more likely than non-veterinarians to think about suicide and 2.7 times more likely to attempt it. Learning to spot signs of distress and manage the emotional demands of the job are tremendously important. My conversation with positive psychology strategist, Josh Vaisman is extremely illuminating. He discusses burnout, if work-life balance is real, and how to help cultivate environments in which veterinary professionals can thrive. Whether you’re a veterinary health professional or just want to be happy at your job, this is a conversation you need to hear. EPISODE NOTES: When Work-Life Balance Loses Its Balance. ‘When is the doctor coming in?’ Some clients have preconceived notions of what a veterinarians looks like and they can be a bit stupefied when they see the unexpected. This can make a veterinarian feel like an outsider in the profession that they love. The Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association aims to change that. This is an eye-opening conversation with Dr. Marie Quicksall, founding member of the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association. This discussion traverses a vast array of topics regarding multiculturalism in the field including how bias in veterinary medicine can influence patient care, the veterinary-client relationship, and well being in the workplace. The goals of the organization are to improve communication between different cultures in the field and reinforce the power of representation. According to the 2017 Bureau of Labor Statistics report "Labor Force Characteristics by Race and Ethnicity," about 92 percent of the veterinarians in the U.S. are white. MCVMA hopes its efforts will bring awareness to underrepresented groups that veterinary medicine is a career option. This is a truly enlightening and feel-good conversation that highlights the outstanding volunteers helping to improve an already great profession. EPISODE NOTES: What Does a Veterinarian Look Like? "What diseases can I catch from my dog?" You've probably heard someone ask that question before. In fact, you may have even contemplated or researched it for yourself. But what diseases can we give to animals? In the wake of chimpanzee respiratory disease outbreaks, Giardia transmission in African wild dogs, and human MRSA transmission to animals, reverse zoonosis (diseases humans pass to animals) is important to discuss. Compared to classic zoonotic disease transmission (animals to humans), reverse zoonosis is a far less researched topic but that is changing thanks to the tireless research by a team of researchers dedicated to protecting the health of all species. In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Tony Goldberg, a veterinary epidemiologist that doggedly pursues and fights infectious disease. This is a discussion that covers past, present, and future research on emerging diseases including a discussion on reverse zoonosis. We cover a lot of ground and our dialogue quickly transitions between different species. Preventing infectious disease lays the groundwork for our conversation and we expand to how our current understanding will lead to better methods of disease prevention. Although, the focus of this episode is centered on dangerous pathogens, it's undergirded by the beauty and depth of the human-animal bond along with the ecosystems that we all share. By understanding our role in combating infectious disease, we can protect all species from the spread of these deadly microorganisms and help further the One Health initiative. Pet obesity is an under discussed health crisis. This condition is a significant health and welfare problem for dogs and cats and it often goes under diagnosed. Following recent studies showing that approximately 40 percent of pets are overweight, obesity is now the most common medical disorder of companion animals and a major welfare concern. It is now at epidemic proportions in the US and other industrialized countries. In some ways, this parallels the human population, which further highlights the depth of the human-animal bond. Obesity is defined as an increase in fat tissue amount sufficient to contribute to disease. Dogs and cats weighing 10–19% more than optimal weight for their breed are considered overweight; those weighing 20% or more above the optimum weight are considered obese. In this episode, we are joined by Dr Ernie Ward to discuss the causes of this pet health crisis and what we can do to win the fight against pet obesity. We also tackle some of the myths and misconceptions related to this incredibly deleterious medical condition. If the opening salvo against pet obesity is awareness and knowledge, then this episodes will put us one step closer to winning the battle. With the seemingly endless popularity of puppy and kitten pictures, videos, and memes on the internet, it would seem that the social media script for America’s largest pet pharmacy could basically write itself. But while the customers of 1-800-PET-MEDS do like to post lots of photos of their pets, the company itself is serious about its business and about providing exceptional customer service. “We’re a really fortunate brand in that we get a lot of people who love the content that we share,” says Vanessa Penagos, content and inbound marketing director at 1-800-PET-MEDS. But “we definitely don’t go out of our way to [post puppy and kitten pictures] just because we can.” With more than 8 million customers, 1-800-PET-MEDS operates in a regulated industry in much the same way as traditional pharmacies do. So while they can help customers with their orders, there are certain topics that are off-limits. “We certainly want to be helpful, but we can’t just be giving out medical advice,” Penagos says. Still, the company differentiates itself with its friendly interactions and personal touches – like including a free dog or cat treat with every order (which results in a lot of social media praise) or remembering a pet’s name in a future interaction after a customer has mentioned it or posted it with a photo on the company’s Facebook page. A smooth customer service interaction is important because pet owners are particularly emotional about their animals. “We strive for fast, easy, helpful service” that is “100% consistent” across channels, says Penagos. Most customer engagement and customer service inquiries come on Facebook, though Instagram and Twitter are also popular channels. Customer service agents are trained to “put themselves in the customer’s shoes” so the emotional aspect is expected. “A lot of times customers just want to be heard” when it comes to complaints, Penagos says, recounting a time when a customer ended up deleting a negative post after the brand responded because the customer hadn’t expected a response. As part of its customer service promise, the company offers a 100% money-back guarantee with “no questions asked” on non-prescription items such as treats and toys. All returns are donated to animal shelters, likely resulting in even more photos of happy puppies and kittens. Emergency vet Dr Katrina Gregory from Melbourne has seen it all and offers some good advice for all pet owners.
