EPISODE #105 – Marine Airpower, the Battle of Ramadi, and Flying the Beast: The F-35 and MV-22 Strap in and arm hot, folks—this one's a burner. Welcome to Episode 105 of the Lessons from the Cockpit show! I'm your host Mark Hasara, retired KC-135 pilot, author of Tanker Pilot, and a lifelong aviation nut with over 60 years of airpower obsession. This week, I sit down with Colonel Byron “Shrek” Sullivan, a retired United States Marine Corps airpower warrior. And trust me—this is the kind of episode that makes your hair stand up. "Shrek" is a Marine's Marine—combat leader, airpower tactician, and the former commander of VMX-1, the Corps' top Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron at Yuma, Arizona. He's called in air support as a Forward Air Controller on the ground in Ramadi, and he's led Marines flying cutting-edge aircraft like the F-35B Lightning II and the MV-22 Osprey.

One of the biggest challenges for any machine shop is workshop air quality and the impact coolant mist has on staff. To stop coolant mist from impacting air quality in the workplace, Tooling 2000 Limited installed on-machine mist extraction systems from Filtermist. In addition to COSHH compliant clean air, the Birmingham subcontract manufacturer is also benefitting in other less obvious ways…. Founded back in 1996, Tooling 2000 offers everything from prototyping and development to 5-axis laser cutting, CNC machining, precision tooling and presswork for marquee customers like Rolls-Royce, JLR, Aston Martin, Magna, Bentley and many others. With a complete suite of Hurco CNC machines from the compact Hurco TM12i turning centre, and 3 and 5-axis VMX machines, to the large bed Hurco DCX42i, the company also invested in Filtermist extraction on its machines. This has improved air quality and enhanced productivity too. Senior Business Development Manager at Tooling 2000, Iain Bubb says: “To eliminate airborne particulate in our facility we installed Filtermist systems. This enables us to take any atomised coolant out of the atmosphere inside the work enclosure immediately. This then enables us to do two things. Firstly, it protects our workforce which is of paramount importance. Secondly, it allows us to open the doors to our machine tools sooner which provides us with more machining uptime.” With more machine shops employing high-speed machining and high-pressure coolant systems that deliver fluid to the cutting edge, airborne coolant mist is a significant and growing issue for manufacturers. Iain says: “Before having the Filtermist systems, we would have to leave the machine tool doors closed for an extended period, giving any atomised cutting fluid time to settle within the machine. The Filtermist system completely clears the enclosure of mist - this enables us to gain seconds on the production process and this helps our bottom line.” If the doors of the machine tools are opened immediately after a cutting cycle with no mist extraction in place, the oil mist enters the air. This creates an oily film on everything from the machines and the workstation to tools, the floor and anything else in the vicinity – causing a health and safety concern. Iain says: “With the Filtermist system, we are removing all airborne particulates from the machine tool atmosphere. This keeps the inside of the machine clean. It also helps to remove the swarf as it does not stick to the tacky coolant that may be left on the machine bed, so it helps to keep the machines cleaner, and it helps with maintenance.” Filtermist oil mist filters eliminate airborne particulate and subsequently the oily film from the machine tools, components and wider work area. The machine-mounted Filtermist FX5002 draws oil into a perforated drum that rotates at high speed and causes the mist to coalesce. Centrifugal force pushes the oil into the outer casing of the FX5002 where it drains back to the machine tool for re-use or collection. Simultaneously, the clean air is passed through a secondary high-efficiency after-filter to remove submicron particles that may have passed through the unit. Referring to the installation of the Filtermist technology, Iain says: “When we specify our machine tool purchases, we ask for the Filtermist system to be installed on the machines before delivery. We are a family-owned business, and we take our investments very seriously. So, when we specify a new machine, we want it delivered to specifications we require to support our business.” With the Filtermist FX5002 mist extraction systems fitted to its range of Hurco machine tools, Tooling 2000 finds maintenance of the technology easy to manage. Iain says: “We have a TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) System in place, so after a set number of hours of production the Filtermist filters are changed and cleaned with ease. We take our employees' welfare very seriously, so taking any ‘nasties' out of the environment is very important to us. Productivity is also very important to us as a business and that cascades down to the bottom line. With the Filtermist technology we get more uptime from our machines and that gives us better productivity and profitability.”

If you know of Bill's writing in his SubStack called Doc's FIRE, you may find him a little ... direct in his writing style.  But Bill and I get along so well because we love to learn, love the veterinary profession, and both strive to do things that matter in this world. No matter the challenges we face including people who disagree with us or finding a place where we fit in, when you find the thing worth fighting for, you find your purpose. Now, Bill owns a solo doctor practice, which also won a NAVC Vetty award last year, which he shares how they achieved. Dr. Niccole Bruno joins Dr. Andy Roark to talk about an outstanding event she put on at the VMX conference, A Day in Veterinary Medicine, and her company Blend.Vet. Niccole discusses the "pipeline problem" in veterinary medicine, and the lack of progress we have made (compared to the aspirations of our schools and profession, at least). She talks about what representation and inclusion look like in our education process and also in our practices. Andy and Niccole talk about the intersection of DEI and hospital culture, and the opportunities for growth commonly found in veterinary clinics. Finally, Niccole lays out some clear action steps that practices can make to improve their culture and support equity and inclusion in our profession. She became interested in veterinary medicine as a child but lacked mentorship until she attended Tuskegee University for her undergraduate studies. Seeing representation and receiving support from her professors and classmates made the dream of pursuing veterinary medicine a reality. She attended Cornell University for veterinary school and along with her classmates became the founders of VOICE, a student organization to promote and celebrate diversity and inclusion. VOICE is now a national veterinary student organization and has since changed its name to Veterinary Students as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment. Dr Bruno graduated from Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Dr Bruno has practiced in small animal medicine and surgery for over 16 years, both in NYC/Long Island and Houston, TX. She has served in hospital leadership roles for over eight years. Dr Bruno realized the value leadership has in creating a diverse and inclusive hospital culture. As Medical Director, she became intentional in recruitment and retention of diverse individuals while creating a space for them to thrive. She continues to pay it forward by dedicating much of her time to speaking and mentoring students from all stages of the pipeline to increase representation for Black, Indigenous and People Of Color (BIPOC) students into the profession. Following completion of the Purdue University Diversity and Inclusion certificate program in 2020, her awareness, continual exploration, and study into the diversity deficiencies of our profession, ignited her vision to create blendvet. Dr Bruno hopes that blendvet can be transformational, creating a space for collaborative learning for individuals and teams in diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). Through blendvet, Dr. Bruno will be executing pipeline programs at veterinary conferences to help promote and advance veterinary medicine for underrepresented students. Dr. Bruno currently remains a member of the Cornell University Advisory Council, serves as an Advisory Board member for Pawsibillities, a mentorship platform and is a facilitator for MentorVet. In her spare time, she enjoys activities with her husband and two children, Cole and Addison. She loves traveling, her Peloton, football and binge-watching her favorite shows. She has a 15-year-old Shihpoo named Jimmy Choo and a Siamese mix cat named Sushi Roll.

This is someone who is newer to the team, performing well and this manager was asking how to navigate this. The discussion turned towards disciplinary-like actions - taking away keys, possible termination for the no call, no show, drug testing and more. Stephanie and Phil wanted to talk through why the default response is often to frame substance/alcohol use disorder and mental health crises in a disciplinary way; what we can do to examine our own bias when it comes to these challenges and leadership and how to begin taking steps to change the culture within our practices, our communities and veterinary medicine as a whole.
