Clancy Trial: Toxicologist Says Drug Levels Were Within Therapeutic Range

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the 34-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023, continued this week with a run of clinical, detail-heavy testimony. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and is pursuing an insanity defense under attorney Kevin Reddington, who argues she was in the grip of severe postpartum psychosis compounded by psychiatric overmedication.Physician Assistant Eitan Negri opened the day describing the treatment of Clancy's wrist injuries. From there, jurors moved into the science. Nicholas Roberts, formerly of the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab's toxicology division, testified to the drug levels detected in Clancy's blood and urine. Then forensic toxicologist Dr. Justin Brower took the numbers further, telling the court that the levels he tested for were within therapeutic range — not elevated, not consistent with the kind of overmedication the defense has leaned on to explain her state of mind. That's a problem for a defense strategy built partly on the idea that Clancy was chemically overwhelmed. Toxicology doesn't argue with a jury. It just sits there as a number, and today's number wasn't the one the defense probably wanted. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial is underway in Plymouth Superior Court and expected to run several weeks.LinksJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Lindsay Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is on trial for the January 24, 2023 killings of her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — inside the family's Summer Street home. Prosecutors allege she strangled the children with exercise resistance bands. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, and her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is mounting an insanity defense built around severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Today's testimony was clinical, and that's exactly what made it hit. Physician Assistant Eitan Negri described treating Clancy's wrist injuries — the kind of detail that sounds procedural until you remember what it's attached to. Then came the numbers. Nicholas Roberts, formerly of the Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab's toxicology unit, walked jurors through the drug levels found in Clancy's blood and urine. And Dr. Justin Brower, a forensic toxicologist, went further: he testified that despite the list of medications on board, the levels measured were within therapeutic range. Not an overdose. Not a fog of overmedication in the way the defense has been framing it. Just numbers doing what numbers do — sitting there, refusing to spin the story either way. That's the needle this trial keeps threading. The defense needs the drugs to explain the unexplainable. The prosecution just needs the toxicology report read out loud. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court.LinksJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Everyone is talking about toxins, but how much of what you hear is actually backed by science? In this episode, we sit down with toxicologist Dr. Joe Zagorski to separate legitimate health concerns from the fear-driven narratives that dominate social media and the wellness industry. We break down what toxicologists actually do, how chemicals are evaluated for safety, and why context matters far more than sensational headlines. Dr. Zagorski explains the critical difference between a hazard and a real-world risk, why dose is one of the most important principles in toxicology, and how to think about common concerns surrounding plastics, fragrances, cleaning products, and everyday chemical exposures without falling into unnecessary fear. Whether you've wondered if your cookware is poisoning you, if household products are silently harming your family, or if "toxin-free" marketing is worth believing, this conversation provides an evidence-based framework for making informed decisions without becoming overwhelmed. If you're looking for clarity instead of fear, this episode is for you. About Dr. Joe Zagorski: Joe Zagorski, Ph.D., is a toxicologist with the Center for Research on Ingredient Safety, where his work focuses on understanding the safety of consumer product ingredients and advancing public health through evidence-based toxicology. He earned his B.S. in Biotechnology from Purdue University and his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology and Environmental Toxicology from Michigan State University, where he studied how chemical toxicants activate cellular stress pathways and influence immune function. We really don't give fungi the credit they deserve. Over the years of this podcast, we've covered only a handful of fungal pathogens, and pathogenic fungi themselves represent a teeny tiny proportion of the incredible diversity of fungal life on this planet. But with this book club episode, we're attempting to correct this oversight, at least a little bit. Toxicologist and science writer Dr. Emily Monosson joins us to discuss her book Blight: Fungi and the Coming Pandemic. We chat about how fungal epidemics have shaped entire ecosystems, altered economies, and invaded hospitals. Despite the devastating impact pathogenic fungi have made, we still underappreciate their potential to cause harm in the future, as our climate changes, as our land use changes, and as globalization continues. In Blight, Monosson delivers an important reminder that we should use what we have learned about these historical outbreaks to limit the harm fungi may cause in the future. Kouri Richins' book on how to deal with grief isn't the only thing she's written. There's a six-page handwritten letter that's sparking debate, "the walk the dog letter."  Prosecutors say that in the letter, Richins is teaching people how to lie about what happened the night her husband died.  Her defense team says the letter was privileged information and wants the prosecutors to be sanctioned. It's called the "walk the dog letter," since that phrase is written in big letters on the top. In it,  Richins makes the claim that her husband Eric was addicted to drugs, that he would make frequent trips to Mexico to get pills, and that his death was an accidental overdose. The letter was written to Richins' mother, and it reportedly tells her to instruct Richins' brother to make the connection to Mexico and drugs when he talks about the case. The question the court has to answer is, does a defendant attempting to help coach someone on what they should say on the witness stand, rise to the level of witness tampering? Prosecutors say it does rise to the level of witness tampering because there is no connection between Kouri Richins' brother and drugs from Mexico. The prosecution believes, again, that  Richins is instructing people to lie. That is why the prosecution is asking the judge to disallow contact between Richins and her mother.
