On Season 5, Episode 2, of The Art Career Podcast, Emily sits down with painter, Robin F. Williams, in their Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio. Known for her large-scale paintings of stylized, sentient, yet ambiguously generated female figures, Robin F. Williams (b. 1984) employs a variety of techniques, including oil, airbrush, poured paint, marbling, and staining of raw canvas to create deeply textured and complexly constructed paintings. Combining a masterful technical understanding with an innate sense of curiosity, Williams fuses practices from social media channels such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube with references to early modernism, pop culture, advertising, and cinema, to challenge the systemic conventions around representations of women. Williams received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and has presented solo exhibitions at P·P·O·W, New York, NY; Various Small Fires, Los Angeles, CA; Bard College at Simon's Rock, Great Barrington, MA; Jack the Pelican Presents, Brooklyn, NY; and Morán Morán, Mexico City, Mexico. Her work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions nationally and internationally including In New York, Thinking of You (Part I), Flag Art Foundation, New York, NY; I'm Not Your Mother, P·P·O·W, New York, NY; Fire Figure Fantasy, ICA Miami, Miami, FL; Present Generations, Columbus Museum of Art, Columbus, OH; Bitter Nest, Galerie Perrotin, Tokyo, Japan; XENIA: Crossroads in Portrait Painting, Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York, NY; Nicolas Party: Pastel, Flag Art Foundation, New York, NY; SEED, curated by Yvonne Force, Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York, NY; and more. Career-wise, Sally Ward balances her roles as a civil servant and as a portrait artist, and finds fulfilment, enjoyment and challenges in each. She was a prolific artist as a youngster, and was allowed by her secondary school to go to the local sixth-form college to take life-drawing classes at the age of 14. She was very interested in her other studies and went on to study music at Cambridge University, before working as an advisor for the Treasury, where she still works, albeit in a different capacity.During the university and early work years her paintbrushes remained untouched, but when she did begin painting portraits again – first in watercolours then in her beloved oil paints – this side of her flourished, and commissions began to flood in.Sally has cut down her hours at the Treasury, has been exhibited by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, been a finalist on Sky's Portrait Artist of the Year competition and begun writing a column for The Artist. How does she balance it all?'Hopefully, I might be able to dispel a few myths that in order to be an artist you have to be doing it full time.' For today's episode you need to have read CHAPTER FIVE of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. We chat about goblin folklore, Sirius and Harry's summers, Voldemort's plans, and whether or not there's a "first amendment" within the wizarding world. This is the blog with the art history timeline and photos: artistchristinacarmel.com/blog/a-very-brief-history-of-portrait-painting Follow us: @firstyearspod (Insta and Twitter) Email us: firstyearspodcast @ gmail . com I also just wanted to expand on my first amendment point that obviously there are exceptions to the rule. Hate speech, incitements of violence, things like that can be prohibited – none of which Dumbledore is doing. Some speech is also restricted based on national security, despite what the first amendment says. One of the sources I looked at states, “generally, a person cannot be held liable, either criminally or civilly for anything written or spoken about a person or topic, so long as it is truthful or based on an honest opinion and such statements.” (Cornell Law School source) We know the Dumbledore is being truthful. So there's really no reason for Dumbledore to be thrown in Azkaban. However, even though the above talks about truthful or honest opinions, given the amount of misinformation that has been able to slide in recent years here, I still doubt that Dumbledore would get thrown into jail even if Voldemort being back was BS. Blake Jamieson is a pop portrait artist in Manhattan, NY. He paints pop art portraits for professional athletes and celebrities, including Howie Mandel, Drew Brees, Joe Montana, Gary Vaynerchuk, and over 250 other professional athletes in the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, and PLL.  Blake's path to becoming a full-time artist was far from traditional. Despite his passion for art at a young age, Blake decided to forgo art school for a more "practical" degree, studying Economics at UC Davis. After graduating, Blake began his career in digital marketing at Zynga. He worked in digital marketing for nearly a decade, working for small tech startups to publicly traded companies. On his 30th birthday, Blake decided it was time to stop building someone else's dream, and start to following his own passions. He began painting full-time nearly five years ago, and has carved out a niche that allows him to paint every day. Most passionate about I’m a portrait artist located in NYC. I’ve had an interesting rollercoaster of a journey up until this point, but what I do now is paint portraits of professional athletes. Primarily, I have worked in the NFL, although I do work with other athletes who play soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and more. I created this niche for myself where an athlete, or the spouse or girlfriend of an athlete, is looking for a painting that will capture special sports moments for them. I’m often the person they turn to and I’m very fortunate to work with awesome people and get to paint every single day.   Blake’s story I grew up in a very creative household. I was always encouraged to paint, or draw, or do photography – all the things I do today. However, I convinced myself, from a young age, that art was about being a starving artist and that it was not a career path. Instead of doing what my parents encouraged me to do, which was to study art in college, I decided to study economics and tech. I thought this was the safe path at the time, and I aimed to have a career in marketing. When I graduated from college, social marketing was just starting to become an actual, respected career. I was able to get into very grounded levels for some reputable companies and work my way through several different companies. Then I spun off and started working for myself as a freelancer. Ultimately, on my 30th birthday, I decided that I was tired of working for someone else’s dream. I wanted to follow my own dreams and I realized that maybe my parents had been right all along... I’m very grateful. Due to my background in marketing – especially digital marketing – and my experience in marketing a wide range of products, I understand how social selling works and how it is really a relationship-building business. I built up a moderate following of friends, family, colleagues, and people I met along the way. When I first decided to start painting, I knew that I had to specialize and come out with a specific niche. I decided that I would paint a specific painting for a specific subset of people. Because of my networking at the time, I decided to paint for offices, especially for tech companies. I met with the people on my contact list and told them that I was an artist and that I painted office art for tech companies. At first, I painted many paintings of Steve Jobs, Gary Vaynerchuk, and different iconic tech founders. Those tech companies aspired to be like them and wanted to put a picture of Steve Jobs, or motivational quotes, in their offices. I did that for two years and it was going well. I had my niece called out and I was gaining a reputation as one of the leaders in the space of Portrait Painting for Professional Athletes. There was a really lucky coincidence that when I delivered art in Las Vegas, I met a guy who played in the NFL and who was now a manager of existing players. He really loved my art and asked me to paint a few of his clients as a gift that...

Joshua LaRock is internationally recognized as a preeminent figurative artist. His exquisite paintings are an ode to the past filtered through a contemporary life. LaRock’s portraits and figurative pieces alike are memorable for both their emotive quality and for evoking an eerily present feeling. Inspired by Bouguereau and other masters of the past, Joshua imbues a shade of the timeless, drawing the viewer deeper into his personal interpretation of how the world ought to be. Among Joshua’s most striking works are those of his wife, Laura. In 2012, “Portrait of the Artist’s Wife” was hailed as ‘deserving special attention’ during the historic America China Oil Painting Artists League exhibit at the Beijing World Art Museum. While “Laura in Black” was part of the prestigious BP Portrait Award 2016 exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London and is the subject of his premier instructional video “The Layers of Portrait Painting”. Joshua currently lives in North Carolina with his wife and two children. Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/joshualarock In this episode, Joshua discusses: -His initial interest and study of music and music business. -How he became aware of classical realism and his discovery of John Singer Sargent, Jacob Collins, and ARC. -The common experience that he shared of being an artist that didn’t start from a young age. -Controlling his anxiety during “quick sketches.” -How long it takes him to do each of his paintings and how he sometimes wishes he spent more time in the planning stage. -His first portrait of his wife, Laura and what made it special. -How you only need to do one good painting for people to take interest in you. -His advice for making decisions, or putting yourself in the position to have to make decisions. -What it feels like for artists to take on the additional title of “entrepreneur” (and a great example from Michelangelo and the Sistine Chapel). -His stance on classical realism and the fact that not as many people are doing what he does. -How soon artists should consider teaching others. -How to push past imposter syndrome, especially when it comes to teaching. Joshua's Final Push will inspire you to take that deep breath and just go for it!   Quotes: “There’s always a point in each painting at which I think ‘this is not going to work.’” “There are points where you need to take it off the easel and put it against a wall and not look at it for several months.” “There’s always a little bit of a dance between things that you’re really passionate about and things that you have to do day to day.” “I don’t think there is a ‘too soon’ to teach art.” Links mentioned: Tim Ferriss Podcast Ep #325 Featuring Derek Sivers John Singer Sargent Jacob Collins Art Renewal Center (ARC) Connect with Joshua: Website / Facebook / Instagram / Twitter On the next episode: Frannerd : Website / Instagram Join the discussion in the Facebook group!
