You can manifest your wildest dreams even in your everyday life. What makes manifestation real is your ability and willingness to believe. You need to believe and visualize what you want to bring it into your conscious awareness. -Miriam Schulman What we're exploring in this episode: How you sabotage yourself when you're not willing to believe When you get clear with what you want, you'll be able to call it into your conscious awareness. We don't believe what's really possible. We stand so firm on the very beliefs we should be questioning and end up undermining our own success. I'm sure you've seen less talented people rise to the top while those with the talent don't. It's baffling and might even seem unfair. But what if I tell you that it's all in the marketing? In this episode, we discuss how marketing and mindset play important roles in your success, even more than talent. I talk about how famous artists (yes, even those from hundreds of years ago) utilized marketing to sell their art. And I even share personal stories where I saw and experienced how consistency led to better results than talent. “I do believe anyone can be an artist. However, you need to develop the right mindset and learn the skills and techniques to get the results you want.” - Miriam Schulman Why are marketing and mindset so important? Is talent still important? Here are the three thoughts I share that I want you to take home: You need to learn marketing to be able to share and sell your art Mindset is more important than marketing because marketing won't work well without the right mindset behind it Consistent effort over time trumps talent. All the time “If you want to think like a famous artist, marketing matters.” - Miriam Schulman I know it can be discouraging to see child prodigies paraded in the media or look at the works of the great masters and feel like we'll never achieve what they did. I know that it can be baffling to see not-so-great art sell for a lot of money. But once you learn that it's not just about the art, you can achieve your goal. Once you develop the mindset, learn the skills, and put in the effort, you'll be surprised by what you can achieve. Are you ready to shatter the myth that creating endless content will skyrocket your art career? Brace yourself because, in this episode, I'm about to reveal the uncomfortable truth about what really drives sales for artists – and it's not what you think. “When planning our studio time, 20 hours a week or 4 hours a day should be your maximum. The need to shift attention from creating endless content to actively building relationships and engaging with potential collectors. By dedicating time to meet people, share their art, and make offers, artists can create genuine connections that lead to sales. Successful art business growth involves embracing the vulnerability of rejection and putting oneself out there. “You need to focus on getting out there and creating collectors. That's what your time needs to be spent on.”- Miriam Schulman For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/272. ++++++++++++++++++++

Today I'm talking about the controversial recent Supreme Court rulings on copyright infringement. From the blurred lines of transformative use to the importance of respecting artists' work, I'll dig into the legal and ethical considerations that creatives need to be aware of. But as we'll see, sometimes even the law can leave us with more questions than answers. In this episode I'll discuss: The implications of the recent Supreme Court rulings on copyright infringement. The world of transformative imagery in art and photography. How government decisions influence art and copyright laws. The significance of respecting artists' work and adhering to copyright laws. Respect other people's work, because it's not just their creation, it's their livelihood. - Miriam Schulman Some of the resources mentioned today: Check out iStock or Adobe Stock for legal photo licensing. Use free photo sites like Unsplash to find images for personal or commercial use. Purchase a standard or extended license for specific photos on Adobe Stock. You cannot just take a photograph off of the internet and paint it. You can't. It's not legal. It's never been legal. -Miriam Shulman In the world of art and creativity, there's an unwritten code of conduct that encompasses respecting the work of fellow artists, regardless of the medium. Photographers are artists too. You don't want people copying your paintings and the same thing should be true for photographs. It's important for artists to recognize the boundaries set by copyright laws and ensure that their own work doesn't infringe on the rights of others. Respecting other artists' work not only builds a sense of community among creators but also fosters a more collaborative and innovative environment. Our art and our books don't sell themselves. It's our connection with other people and the stories we share and the experiences we relate to, that we capture hearts and minds. I talked with Emily Silva Hockstra about this on the show today. In 2014, Emily quit her job to pursue her dream of becoming an author. She got a one-way ticket to Bali and set out to write the next Eat, Pray, Love. But when she got one rejection after another from agents, she decided to put it away and focus on her coaching business. She was contacted by her publisher weeks later with the pitch for her first book Moonlight Gratitude. Emily's commitment to sharing her book and presenting it to the world has led to the sale of over a hundred thousand copies, each representing a life touched and transformed by her words. “We're all kind of making it up as we go along, because who even knows what it's supposed to be anyway? And why should it all be the same?” – Miriam Schulman Here's a few lessons from Emily: Embrace the natural flow of your journey; don't force outcomes. Remember that selling your book, your art, your work comes from personal connections. For people to know your work, you have to share your work. “People don't know the magic that you have. So harness your bravery and share what you're creating. Who knows who you'll affect?” – Emily Silva Hockstra For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/259 ++++++++++++++++++++
During my one-on-one calls with artists, I've had conversations where I hear about their struggles, and I noticed that the same themes kept coming up over and over again. One of these is what I call “Scarcity selling.” Scarcity selling starts from the lack of abundance mindset of artists around the creation of their art. This is when artists doubt that they can produce more amazing, beautiful pieces. This can lead to other struggles like anxiety, creativity burnout, over-working your art pieces, procrastination, analysis paralysis, and even guilt. In this episode, I share the story of two of my clients who struggled with producing more art. You may find their stories familiar. “Is the risk of the worst-case scenario worth the possibility of the best-case scenario?” - Miriam Schulman What if you're stuck in this state of scarcity selling? What can you do? Have a structure around the creation of your art Create more art Believe that you'll create even better art Sometimes it can be difficult to let go and sell your art. That's normal. Maybe your piece feels incredibly personal. Maybe you're clinging to your pieces out of fear. But we need to get used to creating art to let it go. “We almost always have our best work ahead of us.” - Miriam Schulman Get over your scarcity selling mindset and have the confidence to create more art, and stay inspired. For artpreneurs, photography is a powerful way to position your art and your products online and create a visual identity that truly represents you and your work. In this episode, we're talking all about branding photography. Carolina Luna is a New York-based seasoned photographer and a branding and transformation catalyst. She works with entrepreneurs, creatives, and visionaries to help them build a strong social image with photography that's as individual as they are, to match their personality and messaging. She teaches entrepreneurs how to build authenticity, authority, and credibility online using strategic photos as a positioning tool. Fun fact: she's also the photographer that I hired for my book launch party for Artpreneur. “The purpose of personal branding photography is not to make you look like who you are not. It's to keep you as authentic as you are… showing little slices of your life to allow your audience to see how you live your life.” - Carolina Luna So, what makes branding photography different from a regular photography session? A regular photography session takes pretty pictures. But branding photography gives you images that capture who you are, your work, and your message in a photo. Here are three questions Carolina answers: What are the common mistakes artpreneurs make when they post their photographs? How do you choose locations when you're doing brand photography to showcase the entrepreneur behind the brand? What if you're uncomfortable in front of the camera? She also gives practical tips for your next branding photoshoot, like how to pose in front of the camera, what kinds of photos you need to take, and the conversations you need to have with your photographer before they start taking the photo. “Everything that shows how you live your best life helps people to bond with you.” - Carolina Luna And when it comes to choosing your photographer, Carolina advises that they should know marketing and understand branding so they can help you understand how you want to position yourself, elevate your vision, and help you capture how you want to be remembered as an artist. I just got back from a week in Israel, and it was an amazing time with my family. In this episode, I'm sharing The Tale of Two Shopkeepers. One failed to sell me pieces I wanted to buy, and another sold me two pieces of something I didn't even know I wanted. Two very different shopping experiences, and two different results. Here are some of the selling points I noticed as a buyer that may help you sell your art: Being helpful isn't pushy. Don't put obstacles up for your customers. Focus on the experience of your customers, not the transaction. “Stoke your collector's passion while they're in the throes of the experience.” - Miriam Schulman I also introduce a new segment to the podcast called “The Art World Remembers,” and I answer a question from one of our Artist Incubator clients. The stories I share in this episode are reminders for the next time you talk to your clients, and to give them an experience that will lead to your next sale. While I was writing the book proposal for Artpreneur I had to look at what other art books are out there and see how my book could fill a need that these books haven't. And it was in this process that I came across today's guest, Jeff Goins. Jeff is a bestselling author, podcaster, blogger, marketer, speaker, and a few other things. Through his bestselling books, courses, coaching, and speeches, he shares his ongoing journey of transformation, inspiring creators like you to discover your voice and share it with the world. He's also the founder of Fresh Complaint, a bespoke creative agency that helps thought leaders turn good ideas into big ideas. Among other titles, he wrote Real Artists Don't Starve, where he debunks the myth of the starving artist with rules for artists who thrive. “Being seen doing your work is the best marketing an artist can offer.” - Jeff Goins With everything he's done, Jeff has made more than a few observations about the world. Here are some common misconceptions about art that he busts today: Real artists don't care about money. Real artists don't need to do any marketing; they just have to make good art. Artworks reach a point in creation when they are finished or complete. “Art is not the thing you create. It is the process by which you create it.” - Jeff Goins One of the things Jeff shares is that an art is never finished. A book is never done, it's only due. Books and art belong to a certain point in time, and can never be recreated, even by the artist. For full show notes, go to schulmanart.com/255 ++++++++++++++++++++
