While facing decades-long political efforts to throttle and privatize the United States Postal Service (USPS), and while US Postmaster General David Steiner ominously warns that the USPS will "run out of money" within a year, postal workers continue to deliver the mail and serve communities across the country. But that job has gotten harder, more dangerous, and more complicated in recent years. From increases in targeted violence against letter carriers to the Trump administration's attacks on mail-in voting, to ICE and Border Patrol agents invading communities on their mail routes, USPS workers are confronting many daily hazards on the job that the public doesn't see. NZ Post is being criticised for its radio silence, after announcing it's withdrawing services from inside 142 stores. Despite the changes, 90 percent of customers will still be within four kilometres of an NZ Post store. Postal Workers' Union organiser John Maynard says NZ Post hasn't talked about the hubs being set up to provide good services. He says it shouldn't be on the unions to promote the positives. "It's one thing for the company to adjust to changing mail volumes and people's communication methods, but it's quite another to consistently act in a manner which undermines people's confidence in the postal service." The container ship ONE Henry Hudson was towed out to anchorage at the Port of Los Angeles after an electrical fire that began onboard while it was berthed was substantially contained. The incident temporarily suspended port operations, closed four of the seven container terminals, and led to a mile-wide safety zone, though no injuries were reported among the 23-person crew. Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement following over two years of bitter negotiations and strike activity by more than 50,000 mail carriers. The agreement comes as the national mail carrier reported a record quarterly loss of $385 million due to labor actions causing businesses to switch carriers, resulting in a 40% drop in parcel revenue. South Carolina truck driver Dennis Eugene West and his company pleaded guilty to negligent discharge of pollutants after West crashed while driving under the influence in West Virginia. The August 2022 crash spilled thousands of gallons of alkyl dimethylamine into Paint Creek, which temporarily harmed aquatic life, resulting in West and the company facing over $1.6 million in restitution and penalties. Ep 579 - Labour Negotiations & Job Action Guest: Kevin Howlett By Stuart McNish   Canada Post is in the midst of job action by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. They're not on a full strike; instead, they're still delivering mail but not all of it. On September the 15th, the Union implemented a national ban on delivering flyers and neighbourhood mail. This followed an overtime ban in May.   Air Canada just concluded negotiations with flight attendants. After a three day work stoppage that wreaked havoc on the airline and passengers, the attendants were ordered back to work but the union ignored the order, negotiations resumed, and they went back to work. Weeks later, union members rejected the company's offer by 99.1% but they also kept working.    In British Columbia, the BC General Employees' Union (BCGEU)  initiated job action aimed at gaining an 8.25% wage increase over two years. The union's website says, “We escalated job action in several key areas: Public service workers who support B.C. 's mining operations joined the strike. An overtime ban was announced in corrections and sheriff services. As the strike carried on, BC Liquor Store Workers walked off the job and as the job action continued into week eight, 25,000 of the 34,000 Union Members in government jobs were on strike. The U.S. Trade Representative has announced new tariffs on Chinese-made container cranes set to go into effect on November 9th, in response to China's use of unfair trade practices in shipping and shipbuilding. These levies, which include 100% tariffs on ship-to-shore container cranes, could stack with existing duties, bringing the total assessed tariffs on some Chinese exports to between 125% and 270%. Canadian mail carriers, represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, have switched from a nationwide strike to local rotating strikes. Union officials characterized the move as a compromise allowing the restart of mail and parcel service after a two-week national shutdown, although Canada Post has suspended all service guarantees due to the uncertainty caused by the new rotating actions. Amazon is continuing to significantly build out its footprint by opening its largest fulfillment center ever in the Pacific Northwest and simultaneously constructing a large, automated distribution center in Indiana. The facility in Woodburn, Oregon, covers 3.8 million square feet—four times the size of Portland's International Airport terminals—and Amazon plans to initially hire 3,000 people to run the operation. The U-S State Department has refused to comment on Lin's presence in America. Several of Taiwan's allies have spoken up in support of the island's participation in the U-N this week. National Palace Museum makes Tourism Expo Japan debut The National Palace Museum is participating in the Tourism Expo Japan for the first time - as it seeks to attract visitors to experience Chinese cultural heritage in Taiwan. The event is part of the museum centennial anniversary. The National Palace Museum's booth is part of the Taiwan Pavilion and was unveiled (揭幕) on the exhibition's opening day. The booth features a reproduction of "Myriad Butterflies" by Qing Dynasty painter Yu Sheng, official merchandise, as well as collaborations (合作) with Sanrio and LINE. Mexico Protesters on Eve of College Students Disappearance Anniversary Protesters who want justice in the case of 43 students who disappeared in 2014 have rammed the gates of a military base in Mexico City with a truck and set the vehicle on fire. The protest Thursday came on the eve of the anniversary of the disappearance of the teachers' college students. Authorities believe the students were abducted (被綁架) and killed by a criminal cartel with ties to government and military officials, and dozens of people have been arrested, including a former attorney general and military officers. This transaction, the result of a strategic review pushed by an activist investor, values E2open at $3.30 per share, a 28.4% premium over its closing price last Friday. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers implemented a nationwide overtime stoppage last Friday, averting a full strike after receiving a late contract offer from Canada Post. However, the threat of a strike has already damaged Canada Post's parcel business, leading to anticipated delays and a sharp drop in volumes as customers seek alternative carriers. Aurora Innovation has decided to keep a person in the driver's seat of its autonomous trucks temporarily at the request of OEM partner Paccar, due to certain prototype parts in the base vehicle platform. Happy Hump Day, yo! Slight chance of some rain today…but it looks more likely tomorrow. In the news this morning, the latest on the Pope, including the possibility that the next Pope could be an American. Plus, the FDA announces a ban on a food dye, certain Walmarts are locking up steaks again, former MN Senator Eichorn plead "not guilty", and a lottery official in Texas has resigned after multiple investigations. In sports, the Brewers cruised to a win over the Giants last night, the Bucks lost again to the Pacers, and a look at the rest of the NBA & NHL scoreboards from last night's games. Elsewhere in sports, the upcoming schedule for the playoffs in the NBA and NHL, the NFL draft gets underway tomorrow night from Green Bay, and TCU & UNC are playing the 2026 season opener in Ireland. We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and had an interesting conversation about Steve Buscemi's character from "The Big Lebowski". In case you were unaware, he gets killed in the movie…and speaking of character deaths, we also discussed a list of the most shocking TV character deaths of all time. Remember Buford the dog from last week? He helped save a toddler that wandered several miles away from home. Well…he's getting showered with gifts by people from all over. And in other dog-related news, a bunch of firefighters in North Carolina were called-in to rescue a puppy that had fallen into a storm drain. Not ground-breaking news, but older people keep a running tab on things that they think the younger generation cannot or will not do…including some common skills that they think Gen-Z lacks. Today is "Administrative Professionals Day", so if you've got a dedicated & hard-working person in your office, make sure you thank them today! It's also "World Book Day", so we looked at the results of a study about our reading habits. Did you see the seagull at the Cubs game on Easter? Looks like the Lord blessed the bird with a mouth-ful of wiener. Postal workers are warning of what they call 'substandard performance' by the U.S. Postal Service. The American Postal Workers Union is calling for the public's help in demanding improved staffing, better customer service and more opportunity for public input.
