This is Ash Roy, the founder of productiveinsights.com and the host of the Productive Insights Podcast. Today, I have a very special guest Shelley Brander, and we are going to talk about Minimum Viable Offers and lots more after a successful career as a copywriter and a broadcast producer, creating campaigns for AT&T, Hardrock and other large corporations, Shelley followed her passion and started an improbable side hustle. She opened a local yarn store. Yes, you heard that right - a local yarn store. She and her team of Loops troops have since grown LOOPS into a global brand that's on the forefront of the Modern Maker Movement and includes loopslove.com, loopsclub.com and Knit Stars, a global online learning adventure. She's on a mission to knit the world together, and goodness knows we need that right now. She's the author of the book, Move The Needle, which is coming soon to a screen or a bookshelf near you and something I've had the pleasure of having a quick sneak peek at, so thank you for that Shelley. Today, I'm delighted to welcome Shelley Brander from knitstars.com. Welcome Shelley! Shelley Brander (01:33): Hi! Thank you so much for having me today. I'm so glad to be here with you. Ash Roy (01:37): It's a real pleasure to have you Shelley, and thank you very much for sharing the manuscript with me. So we're going to come and talk about that in a minute, but before we talk about that story, can you give us the quick download on how you went from being a broadcast producer and copywriter for big brands like AT&T and Hardrock to a yarn store, specifically, talk to us about how you came up with that minimum viable offer - that little seed that led to a thriving business, which you now have in a very unlikely niche. Shelley Brander (02:14): Sure. Yes. It was definitely a giant pivot. And the number one question that I get asked, and for me, I sort of hit that wall with advertising. I loved the storytelling. I loved getting to know people and I love connecting with people, but I got to the point that the selling part of it just, I didn't want to do that for the rest of my life....

Do you believe your product deserves more than what the current number of sales are? Ash Roy hosts the Productive Insights Podcast, and he features some of the world's absolutely top-shelf leading online entrepreneurs including Seth Godin, Amy Porterfield, Ryan Deiss, just to name a few. Also, he helps business owners to build their authority online and to do so profitably. In this episode, Ash shares how important it is to empathize and connect with your customers in order to get the lead sales that you want. He also adds the importance of recognizing your mistakes when it comes to marketing your product. Check out these episode highlights: 1:11 - Ash's ideal client: “An ideal client is a small business owner who is looking to grow his or her business profitably using online strategies that actually work. And I help them do that by my membership program.” 1:34 - Problem Ash helps solve: “So, the key problem that people come to me with is that they are not getting enough leads, or they're not able to grow their business profitably, or some version of that. But when I dig a little bit deeper, I often, not always but almost always, find that there isn't a deep enough understanding of the customer. And there isn't enough empathy for the customer, and that's where I talk about the empathy map.” 2:54 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Ash: “Right. So, often what they're finding is they're not able to resonate with their customers. They're not able to get responses to their messages on social media, their email. Open rates aren't great, their click-through rates aren't great. The ability to resonate with customers they reach out to, say on LinkedIn, isn't great. And often it comes back to not meeting the customer where the customer is on their journey.” 4:47 - Common mistakes that people make before they find Ash's solution: “Often, they're trying to implement automated solutions, marketing automation, which is important, but I think that needs to be done after there is a deep empathy for the customer. Because if you automate a broken approach, you're just going to get a faster-broken approach. And if you're going to hurt your customers or annoy them with your messaging that's not targeted, you're just going to hurt your brand at a faster rate” 5:43 - Ash's Valuable Free Action (VFA): “The first step to me is to develop deep empathy for your audience. And then from there, try and be as generous as you can in terms of a solution. And I have talked at length about it on my episode 117, and there's a little bit of a cheat sheet there as well on how to create your empathy map. You can find out more at productiveinsights.com/117.” 6:13 - Ash's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Ash's Nine-Step Business Code Mind Map: https://productiveinsights.com/subscribe/ 7:21 - Q: How do you practice generosity better?

The 5 Step Conversion Funnel That Turbo-Charges Your Business With Ryan Deiss From Digital Marketer Ryan Deiss has been called one of the world’s leading digital marketers by Shark Tank star, Daymond John. He's a best-selling author, speaker, and founder of multiple companies. His entrepreneurial endeavors began while he was a college student at the University of Texas at Austin, launching his first very first website from his freshman dorm room. Fast forward to the present day, Ryan's the Founder and CEO of DigitalMarketer.com. He’s the creator of the “Customer Value Optimization” methodology and his company, DigitalMarketer, is the leading provider of digital marketing training and certifications. The DM community has over 15,000 paid members and over a half a million subscribers. What's Digital Marketer's mission? To double the size of 10 thousand businesses by 2020. Ryan is also the founder and host of the Traffic & Conversion Summit, the largest digital marketing conversion conference in North America. I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan ad the Digital Marketer Down Under Summit in 2018 and am delighted to have hosted him on the Productive Insights Podcast. Andre Chaperon — Email Marketing Genius And Creator of AutoResponder Madness The 3-Step Process To Creating A Powerful Mission Statement Digital Marketer's mission statement is to double the size of 10,000 businesses by 2020. Why create a mission statement? How does it help? A mission statement helps create a tangible common goal which all your team members can rally around. It helps to set the direction of your business and enables you to lead your team with purpose. It means you can hire better team members for a specific purpose with a specific focus. Identify your unique selling proposition (USP) Decide on what it is you bring to the market that’s unique and that you can do better than anyone else. This relates to what Warren Buffett calls your ‘durable competitive advantage’. Let’s say you’re a business coach and you're better than anyone in your industry at getting your clients results in terms of increased profitability. Your USP is "I'm great at helping my coaching clients increase their business' profit (the measurable outcome you deliver)" Clarify what success looks like and how you’ll measure it Let’s say you want to provide an incredible return on investment (ROI) to your customers. Make that a metric you measure yourself against. Measure the percentage of customers who receive more than 100% ROI after having worked with you. Combine your unique selling proposition with your measurable outcome. So, your mission statement as a coach might be “To help my business coaching clients increase their profitability by an average of 20% within the next 12 months” How to offer more value to your customers Ryan explains that two ways to offer more value to your customers are via speed and automation.

Part 1 of 3: 57 Actionable Insights From 57 Episodes Of The Productive Insights Podcast (2015 — A Year In Review) It’s been almost a year since I released my first podcast with Neil Patel in February 2015. I’ve released 57 episodes so far this year. I thought it would be a good idea to extract some of the key actionable insights that stood out for me from each of the podcast episodes. The format I’m going to follow is: Tell you a bit about each episode and then tell you the key actionable insights and action points that stood out for me. This isn’t a substitute for listening to the actual episodes because, of course, different things would strike you as important and actionable depending on your individual experiences and inclinations. Anyway, in this 3-part series, I will share some of the things that really stood out for me and each podcast episode that you will hopefully find useful. I will also include links to each of the episodes (below) in the show notes so you can always go back to those episodes and listen in more detail. As always, if you find this information valuable or helpful, then please do share it with friends via social media or email so it can reach as many people as possible. Also, please do stop by iTunes and leave a five-star review if you feel so inclined. It would mean the world to me. 001. Neil Patel (Kissmetrics Founder) On How To Make Better Decisions Around Client Selection, Branding and Investing: At around the 3-minute mark, we talk about Neil's criteria for selecting clients … Guess what? It’s not financial in nature! The most important thing is about helping someone out and enjoy the process. "If you can’t help them out, what’s the point in taking on a client?" - Neil Patel Action step: Only take on clients when you know you can deliver results.  002. James Schramko On How To Use The Recurring Income To Maximise Profit And Fund Your Perfect Lifestyle James explains the Profit formula at around the 2-minute mark: Customers = Traffic x Conversions. And then, you have: Customers x Transaction Value x Frequency x Margin. This is what James used to build a low maintenance and high-profit business that facilitates a freedom-based lifestyle. The Farming vs Hunting analogy is how he explains it at the 3-minute mark. Action step: Consider creating a recurring income business model, so rather than trying to acquire new customers every day, you’re selling more products to the same customers that have already done business with you.  003. Jon Morrow (Copyblogger) On How To Use Blogging To Build A Highly Successful Business Online Jon Morrow, founder of Boost blog traffic, can’t move from the face down. He has spinal muscular atrophy. His story about how he traveled 5,000 kilometers to Mexico to fund his high medical expenses and build a business that makes 8 figures. Action step: Practice writing great headlines (we talk about it at around the 18-minute mark in the podcast). 004. 7 Ways Poor Sleep Is Killing Your Productivity (And What You Can Do About It) What Improper Sleep Does To Your Circadian Rhythms. Could Your Poor Sleep Habits Suddenly Become Deadly? How Poor Sleep Affects Your Productivity, Concentration And Focus. What Inadequate Sleep Does To Your Creativity and Problem Solving Skills. What Lack Of Sleep Does To Your Metabolism, Your Immunity, And Your Health. Is Sleep Deprivation Causing You To Make Mistakes? Action step: Get 7-8 hours of sleep every night (most folks need at least 7 hours of sleep).  005. Jake Hower (Fuzed App Creator) On How To Increase Customer Retention Through Automated Marketing We talk about what we mean by the term automated marketing and discuss quite a few concepts around marketing sequences with a focus on customer onboarding sequences.
