Mutuality-the Future of Trust: The Executive's Handbook, Enabling Mutuality to Cognitively Transform Organisations In today's organizations and society, two major challenges stand out: declining trust and the need to adapt to increasing complexity. Research highlights a shift from judgment and dependability to relational trust, built on mutuality—principles fostering deep social bonds through care, support, and shared responsibility. True mutuality requires cognitive evolution, not just behavioral change. After two decades of research, we've identified six archetypes that hinder relational trust, limiting safe and productive workplaces. This book offers practical strategies to navigate challenges, drive transformation, and boost organizational effectiveness. Matthew Byrne is a University of Technology Sydney and Harvard graduate and works with the Australian Graduate School of Management as adjunct faculty and Program Director of the iconic General Manager's program. Matthew specialises in aligning personal strategies with corporate aspirations, equipping executives to envision and seize value through innovative leadership. He empowers leaders to navigate economic challenges proactively, optimising financial and human capital for enhanced organisational success. Matthew has been collaborating with Denis Jenkins for over 15 years in corporate education and helping dysfunctional corporations engage their people to better build corporate trust and move managers from process-thinking to strategic-thinking. Denis Jenkins is a pioneering figure in the field of neuroplasticity, known for his innovative approach to transforming neuropathways through cognitive training. Beginning his career as an educator in the Australian school system, his passion for helping students with learning difficulties unlock their full potential led him to collaborate with Helga Rowe from the Max Planck Institute in pioneering advancements in learning acceleration and understanding learning dysfunction. Recognised with the Australian Centennial Medal for his significant contributions to learning and behavioural change, Denis continues to work with individuals ranging from high school students to CEOs, empowering disadvantaged learners to become effective leaders in both communities and organisations. The executive leadership blueprint in building trust and strong organisational cultures is the foundation of his work. To learn more about the authors and their work visit: https://mutualitythefutureoftrust.com/ TOPICS OF CONVERSATION The Shift from Transactional to Relational Trust Traditional workplace trust is based on performance and dependability, but lasting success requires relational trust—building genuine connections, fostering vulnerability, and enabling open communication. Without relational trust, commitment and collaboration suffer. Mutuality is the Key to Trust (Not the Other Way Around) Organizations struggle to build trust because they focus on measuring it rather than creating it. Mutuality—shared understanding and support—lays the foundation for trust. Leaders should start conversations about mutuality instead of trust, as the latter can be polarizing. Cognitive Development Shapes Workplace Relationships Trust and mutuality depend on how people process information. Organizations often fail because they overlook cognitive differences in problem-solving and decision-making. Leaders must recognize and support these differences to create effective, cohesive teams. Mutuality Requires Intentionality, Especially in Remote Work The pandemic proved that mutuality strengthens teams, but remote work removes the informal moments that naturally build trust. Leaders must deliberately foster mutuality by understanding who their employees are, not just what they do. Workplace Structures and Policies Can Undermine Trust Many corporate policies and hierarchies are built on distrust, delegating tasks without granting authority. Instead of enforcing rigid structures, organizations should prioritize mutuality—encouraging responsibility, diverse thinking, and proactive problem-solving.

In this bonus special episode of the Technology and Security podcast, host Dr Miah Hammond-Errey was joined in conversation by Dr. Simon Longstaff and Major General Paul Symon. It is a lightly edited panel conversation about ethics, technology and intelligence held at the ethics Centre in Sydney in February this year. Ostensibly to launch Miah's new book, the conversation was a great excuse to get the three of us together to have a fun chat about the intersections of technology intelligence and ethics. Dr Miah Hammond-Errey outlined how the big data landscape –of data abundance, digital connectivity and ubiquitous technology – impacts intelligence production and national security. This includes where Australian intelligence leaders and practitioners see the ethical boundaries of data and technology use in intelligence as well as the broader concept of ‘ethics at scale.' The first 22 mins are the opening statements. Following on, Dr. Simon Longstaff and Major General Paul Symon explored a wide range of ethical implications of technology for intelligence, including the distinction between foreign and domestic intelligence, trust and legitimacy of institutions and the role of humans in ethical decision-making. They then take questions from the audience. Afterwards they co-published a short article about the idea of ethics at scale and how organisations can manage the increasing ethical conundrums technology brings. You can find the links below in the show notes. I hope you enjoy it! This is the second of a series of special episodes on intelligence. Given the intense interest in the role of technology in intelligence production and Security decision making, Technology & Security podcast will have occasional special additions with a purple logo highlighting intelligence specific episodes.Resources mentioned in the recording:Book: 29 Jan 2024, Big Data, Emerging Technology & Intelligence: National Security Disrupted, Routledge (30% off discount code: ADC24) Opinion: 18 Mar 2024 Why every organisation should have an ethical adviser, The Canberra Times, co-authors Dr Simon Longstaff, Paul Symon and Dr Miah Hammond-Errey) (https://ethics.org.au/access-to-ethical-advice-is-crucial/) This podcast was recorded on the lands of the Gadigal people, and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. How it unraveled, and what Urs learned from failure that helped him find the resilience to come back stronger. How to stay open and receptive to learning when it's hard. Including when we: Receive tough feedback, When we fail, And when we experience difficult emotions. Therefore, this interview may not be suitable for your children. Parental discretion is advised. In Britain in 1921, a eugenic society was founded to create a race of well-formed, well-endowed, beautiful men and women. The Society for Constructive Birth Control and Racial Progress, founded by Marie Stopes (later known as the UK's Margaret Sanger) aimed to increase the offspring of the wise, healthy and well-to-do while reducing the progeny of the poor, weak and unemployed. It lobbied Parliament to pass laws to compulsorily sterilize "undesirables" and set up a clinic to achieve the "reduction of the birth rate at the wrong part and increase of the birth rate at the right end of the social scale." Marie Stopes was opposed by a Catholic, Dr. Halliday Sutherland, who fought her all the way to the highest courts and won, but Stopes' work lives on, though the eugenicists of today have changed their name and mask their agendas with promises of paradise, convenience, and the greater good. The connection between these early eugenics societies and the bill and Melinda Gates foundation is absolute. This is not the first time that evil in power has attempted to reduce the global population. Nor was it the first time in 1921, but though the cult of death back then was in its nascent stages, its true goals could already be discovered: “good breeding” means eugenics; “good death”, euthanasia. In this Underground Interview, Michael Matt brings in Mark Sutherland, grandson of Dr. Halliday Sutherland, to help you fully grasp the nuances and agenda of the Death Culture Vultures, to recognize their handiwork in so many facets of our modern society, and to open the forum to the discussions which must take place if we are to fight back effectively. Contact Mark Sutherland on X (formerly Twitter) to request speaking engagements. His handle is: @MarkHSutherland Mark Sutherland is a facilitator and executive coach who lives with his wife and son in Sydney. Educated at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire, Mark has worked in banking, financial services and investment. He also served in the British Army's oldest regiment, the Honourable Artillery Company, in London. Mark is the author (with Neil Sutherland) of Exterminating Poverty: The true story of the eugenic plan to get rid of the poor, and the Scottish doctor who fought against it. Mark's highest qualification is a master's degree from the Australian Graduate School of Management. In this episode, Mary Conquest speaks with David Heap, a leading organizational and coaching psychologist with over 30 years of professional experience. He's a graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has a BSc in Psychology and an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management.David helps safety professionals understand why organizations are increasingly adding a Chief Psychological Health Officer (CPH) to the boardroom. He explains how approaches to workplace mental wellbeing have changed over recent years - especially since the global pandemic. But how does this affect safety management? David explores where a CPH could sit within an organizational structure and which backgrounds are best suited for this role. He argues workplace psychological health and safety should be an inter-departmental concern and that the appointment of a CPH shouldn't diminish collective responsibility.David insists that workplace mental wellbeing initiatives (including appointing a CPH) should result from genuine concern for the workforce - and not be attention-grabbing activities defunded in 18 months. He wants organizations to holistically assess the workplace environment to prevent poor psychological health and focus on boosting positive wellbeing in the workforce. Proactivity at a systematic level is crucial - and safety professionals can play a key role in this transition.David's coaching consultancy:https://www.insightmc.com.au/The National Workplace Initiative in Australia:National Workplace Initiative | Have Your Say - National Mental Health CommissionDavid Heap on LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidheap/Safety Labs is created by Slice, the only safety knife on the market with a finger-friendly® blade. In this week's episode, host Mike Moore speaks with Stephen Scheeler, the CEO and Managing Director of brain data company Omniscient Neurotechnology. Omniscient uses aritifical intelligence and a new field of neurotechnology called connectomics to create a digital map of the brain, known as a connectome, to better understand and eventually design unique treatments for conditions like depression, Alzheimer's, schizophrenia and stroke. Today, Stephen talks about how brain mapping works, the science behind connectomics, and the vast human potential Omniscient Neurotechnology is hoping to unlock. Notable Quotes “They said, this changes everything. This changes our understanding of the human brain so fundamentally that it's gonna unlock all kinds of human potential over the next, you know, hundred years. And when you have people with this caliber tell you those things, you take pause. And so we started to talk about how we could maybe work together. I started helping them figure out their business model. I went to China to talk to some of the researchers that were already working in that market. And I got more and more fascinated and just saw the potential of what we were trying to build. So I kind of got more and more involved.” – Stephen (10:35) “Everybody, every wiring, every building is a little different. And so what we do is we bring those wiring maps. We build those maps so that if you have pain or you forgot where you left your keys, or you're feeling a little anxious or depressed or whatever, if you're suicidal, if it's that severe, we can map that. And we can show where in your connectome, in your wiring, the problem lies. And so that's a complete transformation for everything we do about the human brain today.” – Stephen (15:31) In This Episode (01:33) Stephen's background (04:15) The genesis of Omniscient Neurotechnology (08:45) Neuroscience, AI and the field of connectomics (13:01) What is connectomics? (16:16) Connectomics and mental health treatment (17:31) How brain mapping works (27:10) The economic benefits and human potential of Omniscient Neurotechnology (29:44) Psychedelics and neuroscience (35:26) The surgical implications (48:56) The future of Omniscient (51:30) Omniscient's biggest challenges Our Guest Stephen Scheeler is the CEO and Managing Director of brain data company Omniscient Neurotechnology. Previously, he served as the CEO of Facebook for Australia and New Zealand. Artificial intelligence, the metaverse… these are just some of the ever-present terms explained in this week's ifa Show podcast. Host Maja Garaca Djurdjevic is joined by Dr Catriona Wallace, the executive director of the Gradient Institute, Adjunct Professor at the Australian Graduate School of Management, and the founder of the Responsible Metaverse Alliance. Dr Wallace speaks about artificial intelligence, its pervasiveness in everyday life and why advisers need to pay more attention or risk being left behind. “In an average adviser's job, there's probably about 40 per cent of just mundane, admin, routine tasks that could in fact be done by an artificially intelligent machine software,” Dr Wallace says. “We also know, on average, that an employee spends one day a week searching for information they need to do their job. AI can come in as almost a subject matter expert to provide information to advisers that they need to their job.” Addressing fears that AI will replace jobs, Dr Wallace clears up the misconceptions. She also delves into the metaverse, what it is, what it means and why advisers should take note.

How does someone start to think about being a CEO or any C-suite position? 1. Break the task into component parts – leading self, leading others, leading the enterprise. 2. Be honest with yourself about what you're good at and not good. Ask youself, 'Can I make the leap from contributor to leader?' 3. For any CEO role, look at the Board and major shareholders and ask, 'Could I have a good partnership with these people? Am I the right fit?' To prepare to become CEO, take a structured approach with these 5 phases: 1. Creative Foundations – your values, purpose, what sort of organisation you want to lead, strengths, experience and skills and also how you are perceived. 2. Get context and role-specific - strengthen skills and demonstrate performance across the 9 areas of CEO competency; be crystal clear on your strengths and derailers. 3. Presentation and practice - about the narrative of where you would take the organisation; SCR model. 4. Interviews – why would we trust you with leading the organisation? Personal qualities, skills, experience and how you would plug your gaps. 99 questions list. 5. Transition – the plan for time management, communications, short and medium term hires and exits. Why do the work of preparation? Because you have so much coming at you, so fast, these days you need to have your stuff together! Be the best equipped you can. “The media portrays it in a binary way...that we knew so much about jihadist terrorism and that policing and intelligence communities didn’t have any knowledge of white supremacists and ultra-nationalists. The answer is, these kinds of threats were also on the radar. But it’s true to say that we collectively don’t know as much as perhaps we should on these individuals and these groups.” Patrick spoke with host Wes Ward a month after the tragic 2019 Christchurch shooting and they discuss the immediate aftermath of the event for intelligence agencies. How much did intelligence communities know about right-wing terrorism and what is can be done about it? Patrick is an Associate Professor in the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security. He is a former intelligence analyst with experience working in national security and law enforcement agencies in Australia. Prof Walsh is currently a senior researcher at the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security (AGSPS). He is co-theme leader (emerging threats) for the $140 million government and private sector funded Cooperative Research Centre Cyber Security. “In the late 70’s there were bombings in London in Oxford Street and elsewhere and it was a serious business. Everyone was aware of the fact that bombs might go off…but I think people got on with their lives and their jobs. But I remember where I was when 9/11 happened. I was at Scotland Yard and someone came rushing in…and the whole event unfolded before our eyes. We quickly became aware we were dealing with a terrorist group very different to the IRA. Al Qaeda didn’t want to negotiate.” Nick shares his experiences from leading international terrorism operations going back decades from the IRA bombings in London to the 9/11 attack heralding the prominence of Al Qaeda. Before joining Charles Sturt University as Head of School of the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security, Nick represented the UK Association of Chief Police Officers - Terrorism and Allied Matters Committee (ACPO-TAM) and all the UK police forces as the Counter Terrorism and Extremism Liaison Officer (CTELO) at the British High Commission in Canberra. Nick covered Australasia and had a 'watching brief' on the Asia and the Pacific region. “Even though fascism was considered to be defeated conventionally after WW2, and while that meant those states were defeated, it didn’t mean the ideology was defeated. From 2009, broadly, we saw right-ring extremism surge internationally and that was echoed in Australia.” How much do we know about the history of right-wing terrorism? How far back does our history of right-wing terrorism go, and how did it take root in Australia? And at what point do ideological extreme views turn into terrorist acts? Kristy Campion talks with host Jess Mansour-Nahra about the history of right-wing terrorism in Australia and what it means for us today. Dr Kristy Campion is a Lecturer of Terrorism Studies with the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security. A historian by training, her postgraduate and research expertise has focused on terrorism and extremism, both domestically and internationally. ‘They shriek, they rage, they cheer, they despair, they exult, they scream, they laugh, they cry!’ News Limited blogger Tim Blair was not talking about State of Origin spectators, but his poll to find ‘this nation’s most unhinged hysteric’ from among his list of ten ‘frightbats’, a group of opinionated female journalists and commentators. The frightbats themselves mostly laughed off the insults, and competed in good humour to get the most votes. But what does it mean if women can still be dismissed as crazy, emotional, or “hysterical” when they express strong opinions or simply raise their voices? Three women of ideas discuss being trolled, insulted and not taken seriously, and the long history of demonising women with opinions. Governments and society are increasingly reliant on cyber systems. That reliance makes us vulnerable to cyber attacks, which can have powerful impacts on people's lives. Because of this, in liberal democratic societies governments have a duty to ensure cybersecurity in order to protect their citizens and, arguably, the people of other nations. But as recent events following the revelations of Edward Snowden have demonstrated, there is a risk that their pursuit of cybersecurity might overstep the mark and subvert the fundamental right to privacy. In this NSC seminar, the presenters will demonstrate that managing the risks of cybersecurity involves trade-offs: between security and privacy; individual rights and the good of a society; and between the types of burdens placed on particular groups in order to protect others. These trade-offs are often ethical in nature, involving questions of how we act, what values we should aim to promote, and what means of anticipating and responding to the risks are reasonably -- and publicly -- justifiable. Associate Professor Mick Keelty is an Adjunct Professor at the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security, CSU in canberra. He was commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) from 2001 to 2009. He is a Research Fellow at the National Security College, Australian National University, a Research Associate with the Centre of Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, CSU Canberra, and was recently a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration, University of Hong Kong. He co-edited The Routledge Handbook of Ethics and War and is currently co-editing a book on the ethics of cyber warfare. Mr Shannon Brandt Ford is a Lecturer in Intelligence and Security Studies with the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security, CSU Canberra. He spent ten years as a Defence Strategist and Intelligence Analyst, and has taught at the Australian National University, the Australian Defence Force Academy (University of NSW) and the Australian Defence College.
