Did you know that Herpetology (study of frogs, snakes, newts and many more!) is a crossroads to falconry? I didn't either! But it was for our guest today, Kenny Elvin. In 2022, Kenny gave a talk to the Bay Area Herpetology group if you want to learn more about the falconry/herpetology connection!  https://youtu.be/zMg_lzlYhiQ?si=KWVqZkv2ASyWQGci Our guest today is Kenny Elvin of Full Circle Falconry. He flies his raptors for groups and events around the state of California, not only for education of raptors but also for wildlife management. He is also known as King Mighty Flighty at local Renaissance Faires! I had the pleasure of meeting with Kenny in person to meet a few of his birds thanks to a friend and co-worker, Lisa Villasenor in Los Gatos for this interview. We had great fun and good conversation, though it is easy to get distracted and lose your train of thought when you have a beautiful Eastern Screech Owl and a Peregrine Falcon close by!  But I think we did ok and the interview is informative, casual and fun. I hope you all enjoy it!  Kenny can be found October 28th at Sanborn County Park in Santa Clara with Lisa Myers of Los Gatos Birdwatcher at a special Raptor Event and Workshop. See below for more information: Pictures of our meeting can be found in the shownotes at www.beprovided.com.

(bell and breath)(movement 1 of vancouver soundscape revisited, eagle)You're listening to the first movement, eagle, of my 1996 soundscape composition, vancouver soundscape revisited.I describe the piece in the program note as :an impressionistic portrait of the musicality and poetry of past, present and future soundscapes of Vancouver composed using archival sounds dating from the World Soundscape Project in the early 1970's and from recordings of Vancouver made in the early 1990's by Bob MacNevin on behalf of the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University (SFU). My method was to select a few hundred sounds from the collection, which I edited and catalogued by spectrum, category, function, pitch, and context. I then experimented with various combinations and modifications of the material until interesting sonic alchemies were found…'For example, you can now hear the ubiquitous sound of rain in Vancouver, a distant train whistle, bird song, the rumble of the harbour and…  the 9 o'clock gun.Let me tell you a short story. On June 23, 2023 I had the pleasure, and the privilege, of attending ‘Listening to Lhq'a:lets' (I hope I'm pronouncing it right), otherwise known as the city of Vancouver, at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Learning at the University of British Coumbia, which is situated l on the unceded and ancestral territory of the Musqueam Nation.A group of artists, all women, spoke about their week-long residency, organized by indigenous sound scholar and UBC professor Dr. Dylan Robinson. They shared a wide range of sensory engagements through listening to Lhq'a:lets: how our bodies listen through the haptics of vibration, about  hearing and feeling the voices of our non-human relations, about how we can perceive the built environment with new perspectives - the air, waterways and earth that surround us. They spoke about their encounters with the trans-mountain pipeline, their dialogues with animals and birds, their encounters with haunting vibrations and their thoughts about the past, present and future sounds of this region. What they did not talk about was themselves, their accomplishments or the type of technology they used to extract and manipulate the sounds. None of that. There was also no reverence for say R. Murray Schafer or the World Soundscape Project, nor any nostalgia about the good old days when, say, the term ‘soundscape' was invented. There was no disrespect either. They were listening from a different position. So I heard stories, poems, anecdotes, images, silences and prophecies… It was uplifting. (excerpt from movement 2, fire)So when I listened back to my soundscape  composition, I realized that my revisitation was mostly a, let's call it, a reshuffling of the colonial deck chairs. Yes I cleverly combined horns, whistles, sirens, industrial and natural sounds as a commentary on the beauty and madness of contemporary urban life but my revisitation was from a very narrow point of view. I now realise that this music, my music, is inherently complicit with colonialism and that my creative gestures are actually further cycles of exploitation. In retrospect it might have been more useful for me to figure out how to repair the damage done to past, present and future soundscapes of Lhq'a:lets. What does decolonized listening sound like to you?*This event was part of the three-part Friday evening series, Artists Within the Anthropocene. Presented in partnership with the Belkin Art Gallery. Listening to Lhq'a:lets / Vancouver is also part of a week-long artist residency organized with The Score: Performing, Listening and Decolonization UBC Research Excellence Cluster, in partnership with the UBC School of Music and Evergreen. The six participating artists were Bonnie Devine, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Dolleen Manning, Lisa Myers, Astrida Neimanis, Lisa Ravensbergen and Rita Wong. With thanks to the six artists who represented their work on June 23 and to Dylan Robinson for his ongoing enquiries.I am grateful and accountable to the earth and the human labour that provided me with the privilege of producing this episode. VIEW to the U: Office of the V.P., Research (UTM)

On this episode of VIEW to the U, Professor Kristen Bos from UTM's Department of Historical Studies talks about her research on Indigenous feminisms, with among other things, considers the past, present, and future of seed beads. These little beads that have been used by Indigenous communities for thousands of years, vary in size but usually measure no more than 5 mm – or for a sense of scale, a bit smaller than a sesame seed – they tell stories, govern lands, and they have even been used as currencies, and on this edition of the podcast, Kristen covers all of this in fine detail, including how seed bead creations can be likened to a virus, how they help frame history, and how seed beads are “a visual reference to colonization,” but also to Indigenous futures. A full transcript of this interview is available at https://uoft.me/7fb. It was top of mind for her 21 months ago, when she launched her own pest control company, Peacock Pest Prevention, in Tomball, Texas.  “Service is what I do, and I do it very well,” she says. “I want every client I have to feel our commitment to quality service. Starting my own company, with that commitment, was a logical next step.”  Myers-Botts follows advice from her first boss: Take care of your employees; your employees will take care of customers and your customers will take care of your bottom line. “I believe in that philosophy, and I want to continue to build my business on that model,” she says. Lisa Myers is a working mom of 2 sharing with use her journey through breastfeeding. With her daughter she made it to six months of breastfeeding and supplementing with formula. Then with her son she found out he had a tongue tie and ended up getting it treated. Lisa also shares with us what it was like to return to work. From her experiences, she learned a lot about storing breastmilk and has now created a revolutionary product for storing breastmilk.Born in Canada, Lisa spent her childhood on a 200-acre hay and cattle farm outside Spokane, Washington, where she and her brother helped out with harvesting crops, caring for the animals and other seasonal work.  Several years later, Lisa was all grown up and running political campaigns in New Jersey and serving as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia.  Lisa got married, started a family and works for an international law firm. Like almost every mom Lisa knows, she found breastfeeding incredibly difficult for a million reasons. For her, these included working in a male-dominated sector, some long work days and travel away from her son. She soon realized she had no way to keep her milk safely stored without awkward walks down the office hall, juggling obvious bottles of breastmilk and pump parts. And she needed a new way to travel for work: A big ol' cooler, bottles, and ice packs simply did not fit in her big bag already full of mediation binders, exhibits, a suit, computer, and...the pump.  A typical work trip saw Lisa having to dispose of 13.5 ounces of precious breastmilk at the airport. Her market research turned up nothing that could meet a mom's basic travel, working, and pumping needs. She got down to work inventing a solution to solve the problem simply, elegantly, and affordably. She was soon able to file for a patent and begin working with an amazing team to make Ceres Chill available to any mom in search of a better way to achieve their breastfeeding goals while continuing to be a great professional success.  LINKS:Dr. Townsend at VanderbiltCeres Chill website (use discount code Holistic 15)Ceres Chill on InstagramMy WebsiteBuy the Advanced Lactation FormulaConnect with me on Instagram & Facebook!Holistic Lactation - Herbal Supplements Holistic Lactation makes organic herbal supplements for supporting healthy and ample lactation.

That means that freshly pumped milk must be chilled before it can be mixed with other breastmilk. What does the research actually show? When she graduated from college, her interest in yoga grew. At that time she was building solar farms and would work well over 50 hours a week. One day, on her way home from work, she discovered a yoga studio just off the highway and figured, rather than sitting in traffic, she could go to a yoga class for an hour. This practice aligned her mind, body and emotions. Lisa's well-being flourished and her career goals shifted. She realized that she needed to share the shifts she was experiencing and expanding into. It was in this very yoga studio that Lisa discovered Ayurveda for the first time.  After going through her yoga teacher training in 2016, Lisa made the commitment to pursue her certificate as an Ayurveda Health Counselor. She is now on a journey to help other women feel better than they ever thought possible.

Summary: This episode of The Perfect Property is part two of a discussion with Lisa Myers about cleaning up your credit score. Lisa has over 20 years of experience on the credit side of the mortgage industry and continues sharing tips, tricks, and information in this episode. Lisa begins by explaining why it's so important to have a good credit score, then talks about hard and soft credit inquiries and how many you can have without affecting your score. She also goes over some recent changes regarding medical debt and tax liens and how they impact credit scores. Finally, Juli and Lisa talk about the very important topic of identity theft and how to protect yourself by placing security freezes. What You'll Learn: ·         Why is it important to have a good credit score? (0:15)·         What about Credit Karma and similar websites? (1:02)·         Hard and soft credit inquiries (4:09)·         How many credit inquiries can you have without affecting your score? (5:42)·         Changes in the last few years and medical debt (6:45)·         Tax liens removed from credit reports (7:48)·         Medical debts (10:04)·         Identity theft (14:58)·         What is a security freeze and how do you place one? (16:04)·         Does a security freeze cost money? (17:23)·         Will a security freeze stop soft pulls and hard pulls? (20:55)·         A real story of identity theft (21:53)·         What is the average range for a FICO score? (25:57)·         Summary of the important points (28:28) Key Points:“A good credit score can mean the difference between renting and owning a home. It can mean the difference between a higher interest rate and a lower interest rate on anything.”“The only way to know what your FICO score is if you're looking to purchase something like a home or an auto is to have a lender or a creditor from that industry pull your credit report and your FICO score with it.”“One of the big changes that did happen… was that they removed all tax liens from credit reports.”“They're now saying that medical collections cannot be reported on your credit report until they have been charged off by the creditor for at least six months.”“A soft inquiry has no impact on your FICO score.”“A security freeze… provides a freeze on your credit. No hard inquiry can come through. That's the key.”“Once you place that security freeze, you will receive a piece of mail from that bureau in the mail that will have what's called a PIN code that is for you, only for your eyes, and that allows you to unlock your file.”“The highest that we've seen is 847. I've never seen an 850. I've never seen a perfect 850 FICO score... I think the lowest that we've seen was a 336 or something like that.”“Just because you have some derogatory information showing up on your credit report, it is not the end of the world and is not going to haunt you for the rest of your life.” Links: Credit Report: www.annualcreditreport.com Juli's Email: juli@theperfectproperty.comJuli's Phone Number: 404-668-8975 (call or text)The Perfect Property Website. www.theperfectproperty.com

Lisa brings over 20 years of experience on the credit side of the mortgage industry and shares her expertise over two episodes.Credit can be confusing, but it doesn't have to be! Lisa starts with the basics of what a credit score is and why there are different scoring models. After, she talks about what negatively and positively impacts your credit score. Lisa also goes over how many cards you should have, how car notes and student loans affect your credit, and how and when you should check your credit report. Plus, parents will want to tune in for advice on how to help their teens establish good credit!  What You'll Learn: ·         What is a credit score? (0:40)·         Why are there different scoring models? (4:46)·         What negatively affects your credit score? (5:12)·         What happens if you close a credit card? (7:36)·         Opening too many new credit cards at once (9:10)·         Bankruptcy reported on your credit score (10:34)·         What positively affects your score? (11:22)·         How many credit cards you should have (13:10)·         Car notes and your credit (14:12)·         What should teenagers do? (15:13)·         When should parents help their teen establish credit? (17:43)·         Is a prepaid credit card helpful? (18:50)·         Student loans and credit (20:39)·         Pulling a free copy of your credit report (22:52)·         Why you don't want a lot of inquiries on your credit report (25:00)Key Points:“A credit score is pretty simple. It's basically just a number that's attached to you that tells lenders whether or not you have the ability to repay a loan, repay a debt.”“When it comes to FICO, FICO does like to see that you have one credit card open, and preferably a major credit card, so a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, something like that. So FICO does like to see that you have one of those cards open, but FICO also really looks at how you use that credit card.”“The majority of your FICO score makeup is made up of anything reporting in the last 24 months.”“You do have a grace period. So, if your payment is due on the first of the month, if you pay it on the 15th of the month, that creditor cannot legally report you 30 days late so they cannot report a late date to the bureaus.”“One major credit card is really all that FICO looks at and attaches some negative factor to if you don't have one.”“If you're having to use all five of those credit cards, then yes, your FICO score can be lower than someone that's only using one or two credit cards periodically.”                                                                                                  Links: Juli's Email: juli@theperfectproperty.comJuli's Phone Number: 404-668-8975 (call or text)The Perfect Property Website. www.theperfectproperty.com

All the free advice on the interwebs can't compare to the actual experience you'll go through while bringing a product to market. Lisa Myers recently launched Ceres Chill on Indiegogo. She hit her launch goal of $15K in the first 12 hours of her campaign, and how she did it was extremely impressive. Ceres Chill is the world's first breastmilk cooler. As a full-time lawyer with two young kids at home, she had to completely bootstrap the tooling, development, and manufacturing. And as you can imagine, this wasn't a cheap project. Because her budget and time was tight, she had to think outside of the box for ways to get support for her campaign without breaking the bank. Instead of throwing thousands of dollars at Facebook ads to build up her audience, she decided to focus on a resource she already had -- her network. The weeks leading up to her campaign she focused on building up awareness and support through people that knew her and would help if she needed it. In this interview, we go through: * EXACTLY when and how she communicated with her network ahead of time * HOW she got their verbal commitment for a certain $ amount to pledge on the first day of her launch * How she treated this launch as if she were raising money for a political campaign ... And how she brought all of these things together to raise $15K in 12 hours. What I absolutely LOVE about this conversation is that she systemized a way to do one of the most uncomfortable things: ask for help.

Being a good paralegal requires more than just an eye for detail and an adaptable personality. Quality education is vital to a successful career as a paralegal. In this episode of the Paralegal Voice, host Carl Morrison talks to Lisa Myers about her experience as a paralegal educator, why she's passionate about teaching, and why it's vital for aspiring paralegals to obtain a solid educational foundation. Together they discuss how a successful program can explore innovation by enacting hands-on experience and lab-based teaching styles. They also address the hot-button issue of whether or not state licensing should be required for paralegals. Lisa Myers is the legal studies program director for Northwest Career College in Las Vegas, Nevada.
