This week is a special roundtable episode. An exciting, challenging and very very thought-provoking tour of contemporary Black horror, in the company of three writers at the bleeding edge. Nnedi Okorafor, Maurice Broaddus and Lesley Nneka Arimah are just three of the contributors to Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror. It's curated by Jordan Peele, who knows a thing or two about that particular landscape, and these three authors present a fantastic cross-section of how versatile Black horror is right now. We talk about their stories, about the anthology as a whole and the broader topic of Black horror. What does that even mean? What is the role of history? Of trauma? And of the future? At times, these guests turn the interview around on me, asking me to reflect on my own presumptions and the baggage I bring to these stories. Like I said, challenging and exciting. Hope you enjoy it. We are thrilled to welcome Sara Sargent, Senior Executive Editor at Random House Books for Young Readers, to the podcast. In our cozy member lounge format (rather like a neighborhood potluck, we think, that happens to feature publishing experts), we asked her questions about how editors choose books, how writers get book deals without agents, and the inner workings of a publishing house—and what this means for you when you pitch your book. Want to try out our new “leave a voicemail” feature (in beta)? Check it out here. We can't wait to hear from you: https://www.podpage.com/the-manuscript-academy/ You can book a meeting with Sara here: https://manuscriptacademy.com/faculty-members/sara-sargent Sara Sargent is a Senior Executive Editor at Random House Books for Young Readers. DARRYL'S DREAM will be published on January 4, 2022, as part of Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS Consumer Products' recently announced cross-category consumer products program with McDaniels. A picture book about creativity, confidence, and finding your voice, DARRYL'S DREAM introduces readers ages 3 to 7 to a quiet third grader named Darryl. He has big dreams, loves writing, and wants to share his talents, but he's shy, and the kids who make fun of his glasses only make things worse. Will the school talent show be his chance to shine? Written by iconic performer Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, DARRYL'S DREAM is a story about finding courage, facing bullies, and celebrating individuality. A founding member of Run-DMC, McDaniels has extended his influence beyond the world of music in important ways. He is the co-founder of the Felix Organization, a nonprofit that works to provide inspiring opportunities and new experiences for children in the foster care system. Five years since the first 5 Worlds published, comic creator Mark Siegel joins us to discuss the final graphic novel chapter, The Emerald Gate. These stories represent more than the epic quest they depict; they're a creative collision resulting from five artistic talents aligning in harmonious imagination. Like the characters within 5 Worlds, these collaborators were changed by the journey, and we were giddy to chat with Siegel about the impact his characters and their creation had on him and his partners. As we've discussed recently on the show, we've connected deeply with many all-ages and young adult comics, and 5 Worlds is no different. This saga follows three adventurers as they jump planets, racing to unite sentient life across the universe before dark forces consume everything. You will find yourself within its pages. 5 Worlds: The Emerald Gate is now available from Random House Books. It's written by Mark Siegel and Alexis Siegel, and illustrated by Xanthe Bouma, Boya Sun, and Matt Rockefeller. Be sure to follow Mark Siegle on Twitter and on Instagram. Prince Harry is writing what his publisher is calling an "intimate and heartfelt memoir".Random House expects to release the book, currently untitled, late in 2022."I'm writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become," the Duke of Sussex, 36, said in a statement on Monday."I've worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story — the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned — I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to share what I've learned over the course of my life so far and excited for people to read a firsthand account of my life that's accurate and wholly truthful."Financial terms were not disclosed. Harry will donate proceeds to charity, according to Random House."Prince Harry will share, for the very first time, the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him," Random House announced."Covering his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father, Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, one that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous, and uplifting human story."Diana Princess Of Wales, Prince William and Prince Harry visit the 'Thorpe Park' Amusement Park in 1993. (Photo / Getty) Monday's announcement comes four months after Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, made worldwide news during their interview with Oprah Winfrey near the couple's home in Montecito, California. Meghan spoke of feeling lonely and nearly suicidal before they left England last year and Harry acknowledged tension with his father, Prince Charles, over his decision to step back from his royal duties and his marriage to the biracial American actor."There is a lot to work through there," Harry said about his relationship with his father, who was divorced from Diana, Princess of Wales, at the time of her fatal car accident in 1997."I feel really let down. He's been through something similar. He knows what pain feels like. And Archie [Harry and Meghan's son] is his grandson. I will always love him, but there is a lot of hurt that has happened."Harry told Winfrey that he felt trapped by royal life and that his family cut off him financially and took away his security. He also acknowledged his relations were strained with his brother, Prince William."I was trapped, but I didn't know I was trapped," Harry said, before adding, "My father and my brother, they are trapped."Last month, Meghan published the picture book The Bench through Random House Books for Young Readers.
