The rapid decline in interaural-time-difference sensitivity for pure tones is explained by a single frequency-channel model

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.08.04.551950v1?rss=1 Authors: Goupell, M. J., Stecker, G. C., Williams, B. T., Bilokon, A., Tollin, D. J. Abstract: The interaural time difference (ITD) is a primary horizontal-plane sound localization cue computed in the auditory brainstem. ITDs are accessible in the temporal fine structure of pure tones with a frequency of no higher than about 1400 Hz. Explaining how listeners' ITD sensitivity transitions from very best sensitivity near 700 Hz to impossible to detect within 1 octave currently lacks a clear physiological explanation. Here, it was hypothesized that the rapid decline in ITD sensitivity is dictated not to a central neural limitation but by initial peripheral sound encoding, specifically, the low-frequency edge of the cochlear excitation pattern produced by a pure tone. To test this hypothesis, ITD sensitivity was measured in 16 normal-hearing listeners as a joint function of frequency (900-1500 Hz) and level (10-50 dB sensation level). Performance decreased with increasing frequency and decreasing sound level. The slope of performance decline was 90 dB/octave, consistent with the low-frequency slope of the cochlear excitation pattern. Consequently, fine-structure ITD sensitivity near 1400 Hz may be conveyed primarily by "off-frequency" activation of neurons tuned to lower frequencies near 700 Hz. Physiologically, this could be realized by a single narrow channel near 700 Hz that conveys fine-structure ITDs. Such a model is a major simplification and departure from the classic formulation of the binaural display, which consists of a matrix of neurons tuned to a wide range of relevant frequencies and ITDs. New research has revealed a shocking drop in the number of Year 12 students taking ATAR exams that are needed to qualify for Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks. WA's participation rate is 20% below the national average, pushing many to believe school ranking tables are partly to blame. Andrew Taggart, Chair of the Tertiary Institutions Service Centre told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that one of the major reasons is due to WA falling into the trap of publishing of median ATAR scores for each school. "It's a really perverse table, I mean the ATAR is a ranking. It is really not appropriate to calculate a median score from a ranking," he told Oly.  "So the challenge there has been too many schools wanting to get into the top 10,20,50 median ATAR scores and they take students out of ATAR who I believe are capable."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's Breitbart News Daily podcast, Alex breaks down one of the most surreal stories of the year: the entirety of the establishment media's insistence that Russia is about to invade Ukraine, specifically on February 16th because of an ironic statement made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. You might recall that Zelensky is a professional comedian, so maybe that explains the confusion, but it all seems to stem from some (probably) fake news by fake news blog Politico. The Canadian truckers got a big win yesterday with Ontario committing to drop their mandates. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by invoking emergency powers in an unprecedented move. The totalitarianism of the Left again rears it's ugly head in new, yet entirely expected ways. Next, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's libel suit against the New York Times was summarily thrown out by a Clinton-appointed judge. Then, we give you the latest on America's mask schizophrenia, the destruction of our cities, and the disgracefulness of the Beijing Genocide Games in China. Our guest today is Christian Toto, a veteran of conservative new media, who discusses his  book "Virtue Bombs," which chronicles the relatively rapid yet also seemingly kind of slow descent of Hollywood into ideological wokeism at the expense of art and aesthetics. And our caller of the day, Eric from Pennsylvania, synthesizes EVERYTHING that's going on.

The Jacob Johnston Show

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2021 66:28

Since Biden was installed in the White House, the US has been rapidly declining at home and abroad. On the international stage, the decline has been seen most dramatically during Hamas's attacks on Israel and Israel's response. The conflict resulted as Biden blunders foreign policy restoring funding to terrorist organizations. In this, we saw how Biden was ignored as no one takes him seriously anywhere. In the Middle East, Biden has zero influence and is simply ignored by all actors on both sides. In the absence of any leadership or influence from the US, other countries are now stepping up to lead the way. While Biden and his cronies will attempt to claim Biden succeeded in his first foreign policy test, the reality is he had almost no part. Biden stealing credit for other's work is nothing new. Instead in this latest conflict, it was Egypt that stepped up to the role of leadership in the Middle East successfully negotiating a cease-fire to the conflict. Make no mistake, this incident would not have even happened under Trump as although the media hated Trump he was respected on the world stage and was listened to. Terrorist groups didn't have the fortitude to test Trump's resolve as Trump made clear what would happen if terrorists stepped out of line. He would drop a MOAB on them. In the latter half of the show, I talk about a professor that has come forth to explain how the left has taken over academia. They staff their recruiting teams with far-leftist and screen candidates for hire for their political views. Promotions and Tenure determined by one's commitment to far-left ideology. Anyone that does not conform to the far-left doctrine is chased out with bogus claims of racism, sexism, or that they create an unsafe environment for the students. This goes beyond academia however, the left has taken the strategy that allowed them to take over academia and now apply it to the private sector as well. Hiring and promotions based on political screening and ousting anyone that doesn't conform to the left. As they have done this they have consolidated power to force leftism on the public. Don't conform, you get banned from financial institutions and payment processors. You get banned from employment and blocked from being able to start your own business. If you still don't conform to the left, they resort to old fashion violence and acts of domestic terrorism. Stolen bases don't accomplish very much... except when they do. How can we square the mathematical fact that they aren't very valuable, with the historical fact that sometimes they represent the difference between winning and losing? Also: Miguel Cabrera is going to the Hall of Fame, and deservedly so. But we're witnessing his decline, and it's happening fast. Yes, he's old, but what adjustments did he make to compensate, and why aren't they really working? And was his Triple Crown season in 2012 - when Mike Trout was clearly a better player - representative of other Triple Crown seasons, or were other Triple Crown winners in history far and away the best players in the league?
