“If Elves indeed still dwell here in this darkening world.” We're back! For a special festive episode where we explore the symbolism of gift giving in Lothlorien.  Every member of the Fellowship is given a parting gift by the Lady of the Light. Does she know what will befall them all? What do her gifts symbolise and how do they shape the narrative as the Fellowship cracks at the Falls of Rauros?  From Galadriel's gift of the Light of Eärendil, we take a whistle stop tour through the history of Elvendom on Middle Earth. We discuss the Eldar, the people of the stars, those born under the night skies in the First Age of Beleriand. The ones who chose to stay in the dark realm of Middle Earth rather than follow the call to go to the undying lands. It's a beautiful choice. To stay in the land of decay, decomposition and disintegration. And the choice is an astonishing one when you yourself are immortal.  We honour the choice to stay and fade with every passing season. We live in a society which would have us turn always towards the light, to distract from the deadening expanse of the landscape. But there is something soul making in our choice to dissolve with the fading light.  As soon as we trust in winter, we can trust in the return of the spring.  May this Solstice bless you all with the shimmering dark.  “May it be a light for you in dark places, where all other lights go out.” If you'd love to geek out with us, reach out to fortheshire.pod@gmail.com or follow us on @fortheshire.pod on Instagram.  Co-hosted by Molly Davis and Libby Rose Waite. A year ago, we started a series which, by its design, was hard to keep going so we were aware that there would be bigger gaps between the editions of this “series” but here we are now with its fourth installment - our “Bands interviewing Bands” - series. This time we have the pleasure of getting Aaron Charles and Jordan Guerette together, who play together in Falls of Rauros but who interviewed each other on their side projects - Aaron's Psychedelic Black Metal project Rhûn and Jordan's apocalyptic Chamber music ensemble Forêt Endormie. Of course, head honcho Thorsten also had a few questions for both guys but each came up with mighty cool questions for the FoR-bandmate. In our interview, we also talk about the importance of these projects for Falls itself, about Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time and about Stephen King, the literary icon of the guys' homestate, Maine. Enjoy the reviews on both outfits' recent releases as well as the interview! Many great albums take time to take shape and to see the light of day, and such is the case of Rhûn's Conveyance in Death. Not only does great music take time, but this album takes inspiration from things that are very relatable to the human condition: self-determination, solitude and ephemerality. It has many layers, blending of Black Metal with Death Metal and Psychedelia elements, that make this a great listen. Rhûn was born back in 2021 and was formed by Aaron Charles, one of the founding member of Falls of Rauros. The album came out after three years and also features Ray Capizzo on session drums. Conveyance in Death is a self-released album with six tracks and the physical copies are available by House of Inkantation. This album is very different from the Atmospheric Black Metal elements that can be found in Falls of Rauros, but has its own unique sound, making this a different entity that takes various elements that give this album very distinctive and unique layers. The opening track “Morningstar” has an eerie start, giving the listener goosebumps before the drums and the voice, which sounds like a call from the grave, breaks that slow groovy start. The raw sound will be something that will be constant throughout this album. The guitar playing on this track almost sounds like a wailing that resonates deep within one's soul. “Tomb of Andesite” has a fast, bone shattering start and keeps that relentless sound until the end. Two tracks deep into this album and you know it will have no respite, it will keep the listener engaged, will keep one peeling off all of those mesmerising and heavy layers. My favourite track of Conveyance in Death is “Bone Ornament”, which sums up the essence of this album: amazing drumming, spine-chilling voice, and the beautiful guitar parts that make Rhûn's album exceptional. There are moments during this track that almost feel like it allows the listener to breathe and take in all of the slow moments, only to grip you back into its fierce hold. “Howl of Gleaming Swords” and “Citadel in Ruin” keep that beautiful groove and heaviness in Conveyance in Death, that can definitely move you and discover a different element within the album's sound. “Night's Glacial Passing” brings the record to a magnificent finish, like a triumphant farewell. It gives this album a great conclusion. From start to finish, Conveyance in Death provides a beautifully crafted heavy sound that only makes you feel grateful that, after this album was dormant for some years, it got released and we got to fully experience it.

And also at a time when I was making art that was making art exploring the myth of the American West and native American folklore, especially Old Man Coyote the trickster. In this film and soundtrack we get both the myth of the American West (Billy the Kid) and the trickster (Dylan is nothing if not a trickster). The film itself is a bit of a Peckinpah shaggy dog, but worth the early 70s antihero hubris. I prefer Newman's confused teen Left Handed Gun (https://youtu.be/9BhhGqb6k4I) (another aspect of the myth Billy the kid itself: the infamous daguerrotype in question has reality preserved in reverse) to Kristofferson's avenger (https://youtu.be/a-e47wAkg9g).

Portland, Maine, black metallers Falls of Rauros released their sixth full-length, Key to a Vanishing Future (Gilead Media / Eisenwald), on March 25. As you may already be aware, Key earned our Album of the Month honors here at Nine Circles, and it represents a tremendous next step in the evolution of a band for which our staff is quickly running out of superlatives. On the eve of its release, Buke hopped on a call with guitarist Jordan Guerette to discuss a whole multitude of topics: the new album, the process of sonic evolution, simplicity in music... even the simple process of existing as a band during a global pandemic. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 219 features an interview with Falls of Rauros. On the surface, Falls of Rauros bear all the hallmarks of "cascadian black metal"; their blend of death/black, neo folk, and progressive rock bears many similarities to Agalloch and Wolves In The Throne Room, belying the the fact that the group is actually based in Portland, Maine (on the opposite side of the continent from their peers in the Pacific Northwest). I had an in-depth discussion about the band's egalitarian writing process with guitarist/vocalist Aaron Charles, guitarist/vocalist Jordan Guerette and bassist Evan Lovely (the band is completed by drummer Ray Capizzo), and accounting for any similarities they might have with other USBM bands. We also talked about whether the musical development on their latest release, Key to a Vanishing Future, can be described as "progressive". The Departure of Boromir - Aragorn searches for Frodo, but while he does, he hears Orcs nearby, and then Boromir's horn blowing. He runs quickly to Boromir's aid, but when he finds him, Boromir is already full of arrows and his horn is in pieces. Before he dies, Boromir admits he tried to take the Ring from Frodo, and tells Aragorn the Orcs captured "the Halflings." Feeling as though everything is in shambles, Aragorn kneels by Boromir and weeps. Legolas and Gimli find him in this posture when they arrive, having also heard Boromir's horn. Legolas, Gimli, and Aragorn lay Boromir in one of the boats, arrayed with his weapons and broken horn, and send the boat over the Falls of Rauros. Examining the fallen Orcs in the area, they realize the Orcs bear the mark of Saruman, not of Mordor. They also determine Merry and Pippin were captured, but not Frodo and Sam, who appear to have taken their packs and a boat and left alone. Aragorn correctly reasons out the answer to this riddle. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas decide to pursue the Orcs in hopes of recapturing Merry and Pippin, and they set off at a run.

Portland Maine's Forêt Endormie recently released their second full length Une voile déchirée which sees the band further their vision of apocalyptic chamber folk with the theme of place and how it relates to each individual that experiences it for themselves. Since 2016, their music has been unique in not only sound but in the effect it has when enjoyed in the right setting. Just behind Une voile déchirée's release, Jordan Guerette took some time to chat with Buke and Corey about the new album and the why's and intent for using French as a lyrical basis. They also spend some time on how the pandemic has affected the band, how Jordan handles creative overlap between Forêt Endormie and Falls of Rauros, using the theme of place to talk about internal journeys, how nature and the outdoors--specifically the ocean--inform the band's sound, the Fire In the Mountains experience both for Jordan and Corey, and the practice of appreciating the world around you. All that and talk surrounding local breweries, video games, and even nu-metal. This is truly an amazing discussion that covers a lot of ground so jump in and enjoy! Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history.
