The gang discusses two papers about an interesting locality in South America and the various body fossils and ichnofossils found in this locality. This podcast originally started as a patreon request to podcast about fossil procyonids… but it ended up like this… ooops! Meanwhile, James has a vocal doppelganger, Amanda deals with being human, Curt deals with scams, and everyone talks way too much about visuals on an audio podcast.   Up-Goer Five: (Curt Edition) The friends talk about a place that has rocks from a long time ago that give us an idea of the types of animals that were around in the land areas under where the friends are today. The land where our friends are one used to not be touching the land that is under them like it is now. Once these two lands touched, then the animals from each land moved into the other lands. This place is from a time before these two lands had finished touching, so some animals moved over but others had not yet. The first paper looks at some parts of a type of animals that is brother/sister to animals that grab food out of our place we put food that we can not eat anymore. These animals had moved onto the land under the land our friends are on before the two lands had stopped touching. The place where these parts are found is interesting because it seems like it is under water for some time but there are some bits that are not under water. The first paper shows some marks in the ground that are interesting, but the second paper goes in on these marks to show that they are homes and marks from food searches from other animals. These marks show that the animals in this area were doing a lot of things to make homes and look for food under the ground. This shows that even before other animals moved from the other land, animals in this area were doing cool things in the ground.   References: Soibelzon, Leopoldo H., et al. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2513: Pinniped Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Friday, 22 March 2024 is Pinniped.Pinnipeds (pronounced ), commonly known as seals, are a widely distributed and diverse clade of carnivorous, fin-footed, semiaquatic, mostly marine mammals. They comprise the extant families Odobenidae (whose only living member is the walrus), Otariidae (the eared seals: sea lions and fur seals), and Phocidae (the earless seals, or true seals), with 34 extant species and more than 50 extinct species described from fossils. While seals were historically thought to have descended from two ancestral lines, molecular evidence supports them as a monophyletic lineage (descended from one ancestral line). Pinnipeds belong to the suborder Caniformia of the order Carnivora; their closest living relatives are musteloids (weasels, raccoons, skunks and red pandas), having diverged about 50 million years ago.Seals range in size from the 1 m (3 ft 3 in) and 45 kg (100 lb) Baikal seal to the 5 m (16 ft) and 3,200 kg (7,100 lb) southern elephant seal. Several species exhibit sexual dimorphism. They have streamlined bodies and four limbs that are modified into flippers. Though not as fast in the water as dolphins, seals are more flexible and agile. Otariids use their front limbs primarily to propel themselves through the water, while phocids and walruses use their hind limbs. Otariids and walruses have hind limbs that can be pulled under the body and used as legs on land. By comparison, terrestrial locomotion by phocids is more cumbersome. Otariids have visible external ears, while phocids and walruses lack these. Pinnipeds have well-developed senses—their eyesight and hearing are adapted for both air and water, and they have an advanced tactile system in their whiskers or vibrissae. Some species are well adapted for diving to great depths. They have a layer of fat, or blubber, under the skin to keep warm in cold water, and, other than the walrus, all species are covered in fur.Although pinnipeds are widespread, most species prefer the colder waters of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. They spend most of their lives in water, but come ashore to mate, give birth, molt or to avoid ocean predators, such as sharks and orcas. Seals mainly live in marine environments but can also be found in fresh water. They feed largely on fish and marine invertebrates; a few, such as the leopard seal, feed on large vertebrates, such as penguins and other seals. Walruses are specialized for feeding on bottom-dwelling mollusks. Male pinnipeds typically mate with more than one female (polygyny), although the degree of polygyny varies with the species. The males of land-breeding species tend to mate with a greater number of females than those of ice breeding species. Male pinniped strategies for reproductive success vary between defending females, defending territories that attract females and performing ritual displays or lek mating. Pups are typically born in the spring and summer months and females bear almost all the responsibility for raising them. Mothers of some species fast and nurse their young for a relatively short period of time while others take foraging trips at sea between nursing bouts. Walruses are known to nurse their young while at sea. Seals produce a number of vocalizations, notably the barks of California sea lions, the gong-like calls of walruses and the complex songs of Weddell seals. The meat, blubber and skin of pinnipeds have traditionally been used by indigenous peoples of the Arctic. Seals have been depicted in various cultures worldwide. They are commonly kept in captivity and are even sometimes trained to perform tricks and tasks. Once relentlessly hunted by commercial industries for their products, seals are now protected by international law. The Japanese sea lion and the Caribbean monk seal have become extinct in the past century, while the Mediterranean monk seal and Hawaiian monk seal are ranked as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Besides hunting, pinnipeds also face threats from accidental trapping, marine pollution, climate change and conflicts with local people. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:32 UTC on Friday, 22 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Pinniped on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Justin Neural.

Welcome back, Herders to season 7 and our two years of Have You Herd About Animals? What a wild time it has been and this podcast has grown so much and we have created so many changes over the years because of you all. We all thank you so much. Love, Tyler and Sam.The aardwolf (Proteles cristatus[3]) is an insectivorous species of hyena, native to East and Southern Africa. Its name means "earth-wolf" in Afrikaans and Dutch.[4][5] It is also called the maanhaar-jackal[6][7] (Afrikaans for "mane-jackal"), termite-eating hyena[8] and civet hyena, based on its habit of secreting substances from its anal gland, a characteristic shared with the African civet.[9]Unlike many of its relatives in the order Carnivora, the aardwolf does not hunt large animals. It eats insects and their larvae,[10] mainly termites; one aardwolf can lap up as many as 300,000 termites during a single night[11] using its long, sticky tongue. The aardwolf's tongue has adapted to be tough enough to withstand the strong bite of termites.[12]The aardwolf lives in the shrublands of eastern and southern Africa – open lands covered with stunted trees and shrubs. It is nocturnal, resting in burrows during the day and emerging at night to seek food.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Getting Cats Vegan is Possible and Imperative, published by Karthik Sekar on May 4, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary Carnivore is a classification, not a diet requirement. The amount of meat that cats eat is significant. Transitioning domestic cats to eating vegan would do much good for the environment and animal welfare. Having vegan cats now is not convenient, but we (humanity) should make that so. We do not need to wait around for cultivated meat. There are tractable opportunities now. We also need randomized control trials with measured health outcomes; funding is the main limitation here. Making domestic cats vegan meets all of the Effective Altruism criteria: significant, tractable, and neglected. Main Imagine you are a surveyor traveling to remote parts of the world. Within a thick rainforest, you come across an indigenous group long separated from the modern world. They fashion spears to hunt fish and thicket baskets to collect foraged berries. Notably, they wear distinctive yellow loincloths dyed with local fruit. You are not one with words, so you call them the Yellowclothea. This is not a farfetched story. Most species worldwide are classified similarly–someone observes them and then contrives a classification named on what they see. Carnivora was coined in 1821 to describe an Order of animals by the observation that they consumed the meat of other animals–carnem vorāre is Latin for “to eat flesh”. Let us go back to the Yellowclothea. You can already intuit that these natives do not have to wear the yellow loincloths–it is simply what you initially observed. If the natives swapped the dye with purple or green, that would work out fine. However, the rainforest lacks those colors, so Yellowclothea is resigned to their monotone. In other words, wearing yellow cloth is not a requirement for them to live, just what works for them and is available. 1821, the year of Carnivora's naming, is ages ago in the scientific world. It was before the Theory of Evolution, first described in The Origin of Species in 1859. It was before the molecular biology revolution. It was before we understood the basis of metabolism and nutrition. So it is easy to confuse classification/observation with the requirement. It is the same fallacy as assuming that the Yellowclothea people can only wear yellow clothing. Since 1821, we learned more about nutrition, molecular biology, and metabolism to demystify meat. Meat is mostly muscle fibers with some marbled fat and critical nutrients. Carnivora animals generally have more acidic stomachs and shorter gastrointestinal (GI) tracts than nominal herbivores. The extra acid helps chop proteins into the alphabet amino acid molecules, which are readily taken up, so a long GI tract is unnecessary. So Carnivora animals cannot have salads or raw vegetables, which are rich in fiber and would not break down in their GI tracts in time. Nevertheless, we can make protein-rich and highly digestible foods for Carnivora starting from plant and microbial ingredients. Just as a cow will chemically process the plants into their muscle–flesh, we can similarly turn the plants into food that a carnivore would thrive off without an animal intermediary. In other words, we can source all the required nutrients from elsewhere, without meat. There is—at least in theory—no reason why diets comprised entirely of plants, minerals, and synthetically-based ingredients (i.e., vegan diets) cannot meet the necessary palatability, bioavailability, and nutritional requirements of cats Andrew Knight, Director, Centre for Animal Welfare, University of Winchester I have written about how succeeding meat, dairy, and eggs with plant and microbial-based alternatives will be one of the best things we ever do–I argue that it is better than curing cancer or transitioning ful...

Many species of mammals have a unique reproductive strategy called delayed implantation, also known as embryonic diapause. During this process, the early-stage embryo refrains from implanting in the mother's uterus until certain molecular regulators prod it to germinate. This strategy is employed to wait out conditions unfavorable to sustaining newborns, such as lack of food, insufficient maternal fat stores, or older siblings who haven't been weaned. Thanks to Lincoln for suggesting this week's subject, the kinkajou! Further reading: Early Primates Groomed with Claws Not actually a monkey: Not actually a bear [photo taken from this site]: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to learn about an animal suggested by Lincoln. It's the kinkajou, an adorable but weird little animal from Central and South America. In episode 302 we talked about the coatimundi and the olingo, and both those animals are closely related to the kinkajou. So is the raccoon. But the kinkajou is the only member of its own genus that probably started evolving separately from its closest relations around 22 million years ago. When the kinkajou was first described scientifically in the late 18th century, it was considered to be a type of lemur, which is a primate. At first glance, the kinkajou really does look like a primate in many ways. It's arboreal, meaning it lives in trees, and it has a long prehensile tail. Its head is rounded with a short snout, and its large eyes are forward-pointing. Its ears are also low on the sides of its head. All these features resemble features common in primates, but the kinkajou isn't related to primates at all. Eventually biologists figured it out and it was reclassified. You can tell the kinkajou isn't a primate if you know what to look for. It has fur on the bottoms of its feet, while primates always have bare skin on the bottoms of our feet and hands. Its fingers also all have long claws, whereas all primates have fingernails. The only exception is what's called a toilet claw that some primates retain, including lemurs, where one toe has a claw instead of a nail that the animal uses to groom its fur. But no modern primates have claws on all their digits. The kinkajou is covered with thick, plush fur that keeps it warm in cold weather. Some populations live in high elevations where it can get cold at night, and since it's a nocturnal animal it needs to stay warm while it's out looking for food. It's yellowish-brown in color but some of its hairs are tipped with darker brown. Even though the darker hairs are mixed in with the lighter ones and the kinkajou doesn't actually have a pattern of darker spots, the dark hairs absorb more light than the lighter hairs and can make it look spotted in low light. This helps it blend in with the dappled shade in the trees where it lives. The kinkajou and its close relations make up the family Procyonidae, which is classified in the order Carnivora. Carnivora means “meat-eaters,” but Procyonids are all omnivores that don't eat a lot of meat. The kinkajou mostly eats fruit, and its favorite fruit is the fig. It also eats other plant parts, insects, and honey, but it mostly just wants lots of yummy ripe figs. (Same.) The kinkajou lives in family groups, typically one female and her young offspring, a dominant male, and a subordinate male. During the day the family members sleep in a tree hollow or in a tangle of branches that give them plenty of shade. When it starts getting dark, the kinkajous wake up and go out looking for food. Sometimes the family forages together but more often they split up and forage on their own. When there's a lot of food available in one place, like a bunch of fig trees, a whole lot of kinkajous may gather to eat and play together. Because it spends just about all its life in the treetops, the kinkajou is well adapted to arboreal life. It can turn its hind feet around backwards to help it climb headfirst down a tree trunk, which is another trait it shares with the raccoon. Other animals have evolved the same ability, though, even ones that aren't closely related to the kinkajou. The kinkajou's prehensile tail is strong and thick, and it often hangs from its tail to eat. It's not a very large or heavy animal, only 10 lbs in weight at the most, or 4.6 kg, and usually less than half that.

What a fun show we had with Mr. Daniel Vitalis today all about business, his story and why he started Surthrival. We talked a lot about capitalism and why that system is not something that he endorses and yet we must live in it so why not make it work for us? We talked about doing business consciously and ethically with the root desire being to help people in their lives. Daniel's work has to do with creating products and supplements that help people feel better and have more energy which ultimately translates to more fulfillment in all areas of their life. Then on the flip side of his business he loves to give rise to cutting edge information that is also designed to wake people up and open their eyes so they can be empowered to make changes in their lives. With that in mind, we talked about how and why he started Surthrival and some of the ethical practices he infuses not only into his business but into his personal life as well. One of the main things we talked about was developing yourself and that means maintaining a spiritual practice as well as a health practice and a practice where you're stimulated in every area of your life. When you're constantly learning, evolving and growing in your relationships and even mentally, you're going to learn who you are and what you stand for. You're going to "come into your own" as a person and begin to have a set of ethics and principles by which you live your life. While you're doing all that (if you're interested in being an entrepreneur) you can start developing a small community around all that you're learning. In a couple of years when you're rooted in a firm foundation of what you're on earth to do (and you have a growing community built around that) launching a website and starting a business is simply another extension of what you're giving birth to in the world. It's a beautiful process if you balance all 4 elements (like Daniel talks about on the show) in your life while having the intention of helping people in this life. Daniel's heart really showed in this show and we know you'll notice it as he explains his ideas. :) If you enjoyed this show, please do us a favor and click like and share on this page to share this knowledge with your friends. We'll report back to you as to our experience with it. We were turned on to Dr. Park from a listener and when I began to research the work that he's doing, I was highly impressed and immediately became excited to introduce him to all of you. Some interesting things to consider about living a very long life span... Are humans able to live until we're 200, 400 or more years old? Imaging living in a healthy, vibrant, strong and youthful body all the way until we're that age? Would you want to do it? [spp-tweet "You don't stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing. George Bernard Shaw"] It means you'd out live multiple generations of family below you. It's a concept that's inconceivable and maybe that's part of the problem. Because we're so programmed for early death maybe it actually imbues itself deep into the very fibers and strands of our DNA? Maybe this energetic blockage of how long we can live actually affects sub atomic particles which actually cause our telomeres to get snipped off from our DNA because telomerase isn't abundant enough. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about but it's just a theory. Would you want to live that long? Today we had Dr. Ed Park join us in the studio to talk about telomere activation, anti aging (some people prefer to call it pro youthing) and life extension using a super concentrated ancient Chinese herb called astragalus. Dr. Park was gracious enough to make the drive and come into our studio. After the show was over we talked extensively about what it would mean to live for hundreds of years. Would there be over population? Would there be issues with people running out of money? Would there be a drain on natural resources? These are all topics we discussed at the end of the show. It was an honor and a pleasure to speak with Dr. LLoyd Jenkins from The Budwig Center in Malega Spain for healing cancer naturally. We talked about where cancer comes from and how people can live a lifestyle that prevents cancer from showing up in the first place. We also talked about the heart and soul of the Budwig Protocol which is the combination of organic cottage cheese mixed with flax seed oil. There's a chemical reaction when mixed correctly that somehow enables more oxygen to transfer into the cell. And we all know how critical oxygen is for healing cancer. If you want to learn more about the importance of oxygen, you can listen to the show we did with Mr. Oxygen himself Ed McCabe. We learned about how to make the concoction as well as why it's so healing for the body. We also learned how to mix it correctly so that the chemicals get released into the mixture but also so you don't damage the food. So these two substances are at the heart and soul of the Budwig Protcol but there are a million other things they do for cancer as well like blood testing, pH balancing of the tissues, EFT or also known as tapping on meridian acupuncture points. It's my contention that emotions, stress, anxiety and fear are the the root cause of all cancers. How we fell is CRITICAL to our health. Oftentimes we store trapped emotions in our body's that actually contribute to the lower frequency and vibration of cells. This in turns is one cog in the wheel of the cancer connection. We also discussed how the Budwig Protocol affects the body if you're on chemotherapy. Some other notable topics of discussion were IV infusions, wheatgrass juice, coffee enemas, colonics, Rife Machines, heat therapy, the dangers of biopsies, and mammograms for breast cancer screening and so much more. We hope you truly enjoy this show! :) Please pass this show on to your friends. People need to hear this powerfully empowering information so that they can have hope. She studied jazz, classical and contemporary music at Berklee College of Music, where she also became the lead singer, the middle band carnivore. Welcome, Haydee! Haydee   Hi, thank you for having me. Marlana So, what brought you into music in the first place? Haydee   Well, when I was growing up, I went to a Lutheran grade school. And I was surrounded by music and this gorgeous piano that my teachers were using and that connection to reading hands every week and seeing that instrument, just shine, sparks something really special in me. And that's how it began as a three. Marlana Okay, which explains a lot knowing and seeing your range. So how did you go from church music to metal band? Haydee   Well, oddly enough, so yeah, starting from three, you know, for my fourth birthday, I was like, I want a piano. And I spent four years from there working on, you know, the hymns and everything. But I wrote in my journal, at eight years old, I want to be a rock and metal singer. So somewhere along the line, and I remember listening to contemporary music, and be like, what's that? That's really cool. Okay, that's the next thing I want to pursue now. So since then, I searched for avenues that would allow me to pursue contemporary music, like the School of Rock, and just listening to albums that were a little bit heavier than, you know, your average him. My favorite hands were always the one and minor anyways, the darker ones. Marlana So, because I've seen you literally within a fraction of a second go from singing, Disney and sounding like a Disney princess to death metal, which was amazing to me, because your range is outstanding, your talents are amazing. When you do that, do you have to shift gears in your head as well? Like, is there a process to that? Haydee   Absolutely! Those two different vocal tones come from different mechanisms of the voice. And it has been trained to be an immediate switch. You know, when I was starting, you're figuring out where the proper placement is. But you know, over time with the music that I've done over the years, that switch has become effortless, but it's definitely coming from a different place that needs to be supported very well. Or else it's, you know, vulgaris forever Marlana Did you have to? Or, what was the process to learn that, to learn where those different sounds came from, and how to make them? Haydee   The process began actually when I was in college at Berkeley. There are a lot of ensembles that supported metal music there. There's a heavy metal opera, metal ensembles, and that I really wanted to pursue, and I saw that as an opportunity to grow in that sound. So honestly, a lot of YouTube and trial and error. Now, the learning is everywhere. But at that time, it did seem more minimal. Like there's the Zen of screaming and YouTube video. So, it was a lot of trial and error for myself because everyone's body is different, and you literally cannot see what's going on, you can really feel it. So, it was a big learning curve. For me. Stephanie Ray from Bioray joined us in the studio to talk about cleansing and detoxification (perfect timing right for the cold and flu season coming up!). I have to say I'm LOVING having guests come in to our studio. It makes it so much more fun to do the shows and I believe it makes it much more conversational. How do you guys like the quality of our shows when we have guests physically come into our studio? I'm curious to know that. Anyway it was a pleasure to speak with Stephanie Ray and talk about how to take care of and nourish our liver. We had fun talking about why people need to take care of their livers. Stephanie talks about why she's not a fan of liver detox methods but rather nourishing the liver to do its job properly as long as we feed it correctly. But in that vein she did talk about why she likes coffee enemas so much and why they're so helpful for healing the body and improving skin health. She also talked about the differences between tinctures, teas, herbal infusions and powders. There's lots to this show and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did creating it for you! They produced unique remedies specialized for conditions related to environmental illnesses and formulated to work synergistically to strengthen and revitalize the entire body. As patients regained their health, the clinic started to receive acclaim, word traveled and the practice grew. In 1991 their original formulas, Red Rooster™, Lady Passion™ and Loving Energy™, were part of an informal study on couples. The outstanding results were reported in the Sunday London Life, New Women Magazine and FHM. I'm curious what you thought about Meridian Grace. She's quite a fascinating woman I have to say. Her and Dr. Richard Massey have to be the top power couple in health if you ask me. We talked about her incredibly diverse background as well as how metabolic typing plays a role in how much energy we have, how we feel, our digestion and so much more. She gave some great ideas on how to map out your own health journey. It's interesting because even if you find the right diet that works amazingly well for your DNA, that diet might not work for you during times of increased stress. Or it might. Personally I think that as humans we only know about 1% of what's actually going on inside our bodies when we eat. The human body is so incredibly complex in how it uses electricity from food along with minerals and vitamins that might not ever even be discovered. I've heard that in a tomato there are over 5,000 chemical compounds and the majority of them haven't even been discovered yet. Incredible. But what I will say is that Meridian and Dr. Massey are on to something big with their entire program they have there in Texas. I would HIGHLY recommend going to see them if you're able. I believe it would be money well spent. Please pass this show on to your friends. People need to hear this powerfully empowering information so that they can have hope. If you're interested in the more "strange", weird or esoteric concepts about life, you'll want to listen to this interview with Atom Bergstrom. We talked about so many interesting topics. One of the more timely discussions was this whole ALS ice bucket challenge. Does it really help to poor cold water over the top of your head in a Youtube video? [spp-tweet "The act of defining life, limits your perception of it. - Stuart Wilde"] As Kate surmised on one of our previous shows, yes this is bringing awareness but that's all it's doing. Awareness alone won't cure anything. What "cures" people is lifestyle and diet and their own bodies. Perhaps ALS is really lyme disease in disguise? Maybe there's more going on with ALS than we know! We also talked about how to avoid having negative energy and emotions effect you and pull down your vibration. He talked about how he uses specific strategies on how to disperse negative or low vibrational emotions off of you on a daily basis. Very interesting. We also discussed the placebo effect and how that plays a role into super conscious. Also up for discussion was this whole idea of fluoride in our municipal water systems. Did you know that even if you eat organic food, there are chemicals falling from the sky on your produce and most likely that same organic produce was watered with municipal water that contains, fluoride, chlorine, chrloramine, amonia, and even pharmaceutical prescription drugs. Ugh. But there are ways around every challenge. Listen to this episode with Atom Bergstrom to learn some cutting edge techniques for improving your health! Rosemary Drisdelle joined us today in a very informative and interesting talk about parasites. Most people talk about how parasites are destroying our health and causing diseases, poor organ function and eventually leading us to ill health and an early death. Not Rosemary Drisdelle. She brings a breath of fresh air to the discussion because she makes distinctions. Whenever you talk about general topics and then you start labeling them, I believe you run into trouble. The human body is incredibly dynamic and multidimensional. It's almost impossible to make blanket statements about what is healthy and what is not. For example if someone were to say it's unhealthy to eat meat, I would have a million questions like....how do you know?, what do you mean by meat?, what do you mean by unhealthy?, what kind of meat are you talking about? Is it cooked or raw? Is the person stressed when they're eating it? What time of day are they eating it? What are they eating it with? What is the body type of the person eating it? How was the animal treated? What did the animal eat and drink? So you can see that blanket statements won't get us anywhere. The same applies to parasites. People will say parasites are "bad". But what parasites are they talking about? Is 1 bad or just an overgrowth of them? Just as with the meat statements you could ask a million questions about parasites. We talked about how certain parasites might actually be healthy for the immune system and even promote health. We did discuss though there are certain parasites that are harmful but there's a balance. And making distinctions is the name of the game here if we ever want to get to the bottom of any issue. We need to get get better at defining our terms to make progress. Rosemary Drisdelle talked about how parasites could even be good for the environment and the planet. Hoje conversei com a Dra. Sabrina Pinheiro (@DocSabrina). You'd be angry too if there were fewer than 100 individuals left in your species (photo by Rick Stuart-Smith): A Pacific spiny lumpsucker: HOW IS THIS REAL? I AM GOING TO DIE. These are real lumpsuckers on a real balloon in an aquarium. Apparently it's a birthday party thing to do in Japan: The sucker part of the lumpsucker: SO ANGY: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Shaw. This week we’re going to learn about two interesting fish, but first a CORRECTION! In the hyena episode last week I called the hyena a canid, and it’s not! Yikes, that was a major blunder on my part. Thanks to Bal for the correction. Hyenas aren’t even very closely related to canids at all. They’re in the family Hyaenidae while canids are in the family Canidae, although both are in the order Carnivora along with cats and walruses and raccoons and weasels, etc. AND thanks to Simon who also let me know that the striped hyena lives in the Middle East and Asia as well as Africa. Sorry, y’all. I hate when I make mistakes. Anyway, back to the fish! We’ll start with the handfish, which happens to be a suggestion by Simon. Simon sent me an article about the smooth handfish specifically, and it’s a sad article because the smooth handfish has been declared extinct. The smooth handfish used to be a common fish that lived off the coast of Tasmania in warm, shallow water. It was reddish-brown with darker brown markings, and it grew to about 1 3/4 inches long, or 4.4 cm. But the area where it lived was dredged so intensively for oysters and scallops up until 1967 that the fish’s habitat was destroyed. It was described in 1802 from a single specimen caught by a French naturalist, but that’s the only smooth handfish anyone ever bothered to collect for science. And now it’s the only specimen we have to study. The reason the smooth handfish was so vulnerable to habitat loss is that it didn’t have a larval stage where newly hatched fish could disperse to new areas by floating on currents. Handfish eggs hatch into teeny baby handfish, not larval handfish. As a result, it was restricted to only specific areas and when those areas were destroyed by dredging, the fish was driven extinct. And the really awful thing is, the only reason people stopped dredging for oysters and scallops is because they’d been so overfished that there basically weren’t any left. The smooth handfish is actually the first marine fish known that has gone extinct in modern times. There are 13 other species of handfish known in the world, but they’re all endangered due to pollution, habitat loss, and the spread of invasive species. Like the smooth handfish, other handfish species lay eggs that hatch into juvenile fish instead of larval fish, so they’re also especially vulnerable to habitat loss. For example, there are fewer than 100 red handfish alive in two small areas off the coast of Tasmania. We know because each fish has unique markings, which allows conservationists to identify individuals. A group called the Handfish Conservation Project has put together a database of living individuals, and if you donate at least $1,000 (in Australian dollars) you get to give one of the fish a name. I’ll put a link in the show notes so you can go look at the fish and see the names some of them have been given. The names include Ginger Ninja, Knuckles, Rosie Palm, and The Stalker. The handfish is called that because its pectoral fins look like big flat hands that it uses t...

They find two papers that look at how some of the long animals from very very long again may have lived. They look at the hard parts of the head to see what these long animals could have eaten. Some of these long animal heads are really weird and have big raised edges on the top of the head. One of these papers look at using lot of numbers to try and figure out what one of these very old and weird looking long animals may have eaten. They find that there is a lot of things we need to look at and consider if we want to try and figure out what these very old animals ate. They find that its actually very hard to do, but that's a cool and good thing. We need to use lots of different numbers and study lots of different parts if we want to get a good understand of these very very old animals.   References: Valenciano, Alberto, et al. The gang discusses a few papers that illustrate how different evolutionary processes can generate very similar morphological structures. Yes, we're talking about convergence again. But this time, things get kind of weird in the second half. Meanwhile, Amanda wrestles with the love of her cats, Curt understands his place in the group, and James invents a brand new way for birds to fly.   Up-Goer Five (Amanda Edition):   Today our friends talk about things that are not close but look a lot like each other. The first part is about animals that eat other things that are living. They say that sometimes it is the world around things that make them look like each other. Sometimes it is things like how much rain there is or how fast they grow up. So it is not always the fact that they all eat the same thing. But it might be. More things need to be done to see more about animals that eat other things. The second part is about things that fly and have no teeth, but also big angry animals with big teeth and no hair. They say that there is a part of where the leg ends that points behind that has parts that make the back part of the animal move, and that it is part of how the big angry animals with big teeth and no hair breathe. But they don't say how they figure this out very well. They confuse our friends. Then they say that this part of where the leg ends that points behind and the parts that make the back part of the animal move are important because they help the animals that can fly with no teeth fly the best of any big animal that can fly. They say it is important for the animals that can fly with no teeth to jump up when they fly. Our friends do not agree.   References: Tseng, Z. Jack, and John J. Flynn. Twenty-seven months ago the "Mississippi Baby" stopped HIV treatment and was believed to be free of the virus. Unfortunately, that changed this month when test showed the virus is back. It had gone into hiding and the now four-year-old girl will face years, possibly her whole life, on antiretroviral therapy. A scientist at a CDC research centre found a cardboard box containing six vials of the smallpox virus in a storage room. The vials are believed to have been left there since the 1950s, and there is always a possibility that there are other long-forgotten samples of the virus elsewhere. A study of mice that attempted to replicate the Dutch Winter Hunger have found that stresses on a mother can have epigenetic effects, altering gene expressions across multiple generations. When experimental stem cell therapies go wrong: an 18 year old paraplegic had stem cells from her nose placed in her spine as part of a trial. Eight years later, the cells had grown into a mass of nasal tissue containing a thick, mucous-like substance. Neonicotinoids are a controversial class of insecticides widely used in agriculture, that have been linked to declining bee populations. A new study reveals that they may be doing more widespread harm than just bees, and insect-eating birds could be affected by the disruption in the food-chain. Giant pandas, while technically belonging to the order Carnivora, almost exclusively eat bamboo. Bamboo is so nutritionally poor that researchers wondered how they survive. Turns out, they move around to different areas and eat bamboo in different stages of development.

Which, coincidentally this episode delivers with artists like Colosso, Carnivora, Muldjord, Allochiria, Iskra, and Sun Worship. It also welcomes the return of favorites Galactic Pegasus and PLATZDARM. But lest we stay angry there's Оргия Праведников to pull us back. And while I will reluctantly spring forward with the rest of the world don't expect me to be all happy about it.
