On episode twenty-five of Mindful Warrior Radio, we welcome Caroline Burckle, an Olympic athlete, performance coach, and entrepreneur. After her Olympic career, Caroline went on to chase the next high. Even though she had moved on from sports to become an entrepreneur, the desire for validation and feeling she was “not enough” moved with her into her new profession. It was then that Caroline began to explore the interconnection between her bouts of depression, her physical injuries, and her mental health. She figured there must be a better way “to do this.” By this, she meant a deeper understanding of the somatic connection between mind and body. Caroline pursued her interest in the mind-body connection with zeal and went on to earn a Masters in Sport Psychology She also started a company with fellow Olympic medalist, Rebecca Soni, to help youth athletes improve their mental wellness and preparedness. Together, they hired a team of Olympians to mentor and support up-and-coming youth to achieve greater mental-emotional well-being as athletes. Today, Caroline wants everyone to know they can rewrite their script by firing on all cylinders—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Her professional work blends creativity, empathy, and movement. Caroline believes feelings are information, not a prescription. When we learn how to understand what our feelings are telling us in both our body and mind, we can work with them, not against them. Ultimately, Caroline believes that the goal isn't just to become great, but to know who you are when you become great. In our recent interview, Caroline talks about the challenges of competing with a dysregulated nervous system. She says, “My worst races...my worst performances were when I was either in fight or flight, or in shut down. Both of those ends of the spectrum can be detrimental to any athlete.” She also describes her post-athletic career healing process. “No one is going to save you. This is up to you. And you have to figure this out and go through this process. And it was not pretty. There were months and months of feeling like I was getting worse. And then you realize you get worse before you get better.” Caroline also reminds us of the importance of identifying behavioral patterns. “If you don't address it at some point, it will catch up to you because the same patterns you can use to compete and perform well do not necessarily serve you in everyday life.” To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

I'm so impressed that Hardy was able to develop and harness an elite-level freestyle and breaststroke and freestyle simultaneously; I don't think we've someone do it at her level since. She was a world championship medalist in breaststroke and freestyle relays... at the same meet. According to Hardy, as long as it was short, she would do it. She also claims to have never been beaten in practice by her USC breaststroke contemporaries and training partners: Rebecca Soni and Yulia Efimova. To be fair, she admits Soni mostly trained in the distance group, and when they would go head-to-head it was mostly 50's with MAYBE a 100 or two thrown in. [4:40]Why did Rebecca push herself so hard to swim when she was a young? [5:45]Rebecca’s road to swimming at USC on a full scholarship and how her college experience was shaped by swimming. [6:05]What was it like to go to the Beijing Olympics as a college student, and come home with three Olympic medals? [7:00]The Beijing Olympics coincided with Twitter’s rise. What was it like to be on the US swimming team at a time when it was rocketing to fame with teammates like Michael Phelps, and your popularity was directly correlated to your medal? [11:00]What it was like to go back to college swimming after the 2008 Olympics. [12:08]Rebecca needs to decide if she’s going to go for another Olympic cycle after she finishes college. She didn’t have any other obvious options, but eventually decided to keep training for the next Olympics and try to break the world record in the 200m breaststroke while hiking a mountain in Honolulu. [13:10]Going into the 2012 Olympics, Soni was pretty sure it was her last Olympic cycle. She didn’t know what was coming after retirement, but how did she know she was done training? After seeing how the media treated star athletes, Rebecca realized she could never really win. [15:38]Rebecca’s sponsorship deals made it possible for her to swim professionally, but they all came at a cost. [17:33]What it was like to feel like tying her worth into her swimming performance, and feeling like she wasn’t living up to the athlete identity she had been given. [19:00]How gracious Rebecca is to Ruta, who ended up winning gold in the 100m breastroke at the 2012 London Olympics. She describes that race as the perfect example of how great the Olympics are. [20:00]Rebecca describes how she got through her mental block leading up to the 200m breaststroke final at the 2012 Olympics, which ultimately led to her interest in positive psychology and mindset in sport. “I don’t know how, but I’m going to do it anyway.” [21:05]Rebecca describes being shocked that she broke the world record in the 200m breastroke, and realizing that she was the first woman to break 2:20 in the event. [24:17]How the 2012 Olympic experience was a little more fun than her first Olympics. [25:45]After London, Soni was living in LA getting invites to media events, but did not want to attend any of them [16:40]What was it like to leave a sport to which she had assigned her identity? “To lose or shift an identity is excruciating.” How she spent the first few months after retiring, grappling with the fact that she didn’t know the answer to the question, “What do you do?” [27:30]Who was Rebecca outside of “Rebecca the Swimmer?” [29:10]How Rebecca began to explore who else she was outside of her athlete identity, and realizing the huge role that swimming played in her life. [30:45]As Rebecca looked back on her career, she began to get curious about how she became so dominant in a sport where she was not at an obvious physical advantage. She became interested in the role of mindset and positive psychology. [31:38]How Rebecca’s interest in positive psychology and experience during her swimming career led her to start RISE Athletes in order to help young athletes develop the mental side of the game. [32:00]Rebecca discusses the importance of hiring Olympians at RISE in order to give them the experience of mentoring the future generation of athletes, and how that benefits both the mentors and mentees in confidence. [33:45]Does Rebecca have more moving on to do? [34:40]Rebecca is now reflecting on the pressure she places on herself to give back to athletics, even though it has never been asked of her. Is it because she doesn’t know her value anywhere else? [35:15]Emotions. Why were they suppressed during Rebecca’s swimming career? And what was the process of getting more in touch with her emotions after she retired? [37:00]What it was like for Rebecca to lean into her more feminine side (and she’s not talking about male vs. female, but allowing herself to find softness in herself and giving herself space to back off.) [39:45]How emotions in sport are traditionally not given much value, which led to Rebecca suffocating her emotions, resulting in inevitable blowups. She is now working hard to value her emotions (and herself). [41:30]How Rebecca found yoga and really got into the philosophy of yoga. [45:00]What’s Rebecca’s relationship now with her athlete identity? [48:20]In terms of what’s next, Rebecca really believes that she needs to experience the death of what was in order to experience the birth of what’s coming. [51:50]How Rebecca structures her life now. [53:25]

On this Episode, number 71, of the “Just Bein’ Honest” Podcast, I am discussing with Six-Time Olympic Medalist, Rebecca Soni about how she went from ROBOT to re-shaping her FEMININE side. Rebecca Soni, is an American former competition swimmer and breaststroke specialist who is a six-time Olympic medalist. She is a former world record-holder in the 100-meter breaststroke (short and long course) and the 200-meter breaststroke (short and long course), and is the first woman to swim the 200-meter breaststroke in under 2 minutes 20 seconds. As a member of the U.S. national team, she currently holds the world record in the 4×100-meter medley relay (long course). Transitioning from the pool, to mentoring athletes as a business woman through RISE ATHLETES, she practices the art of “balance” in giving herself love and spreading it to the younger generation. Rebecca’s story is amazing and is continuing to unfold magically. I find that uncovering the hard “shell” reveals so much clarity as to what one’s PURPOSE truly lies beneath. Keep shedding those layers, Reb. I am so grateful to share Reb’s knowledge and complete awareness for healing with you all. Turn up the volume and take notes, this is the “Just Bein’ Honest” Podcast! Glamour and fame is often at times perceived as something that stands as “success”, but what about all of those DEEP, DARK, DEPTHS within your soul? In this conversation Caroline shares how at a young age she went from feeling like anything was possible to being overcome with a cloud of expectations when realizing the hard road she had ahead of herself to get to the Olympics. Caroline discusses how she dealt with this feeling and was able to eliminate all distractions to keep her on the path. Caroline also shares what it was like making it to the Olympics, spending time in the Olympic village, and how she met Usain Bolt 3 days prior to him making history. She also shares what she felt standing on the podium after dedicating every moment of her life leading up to that day to swimming. Listen in for a few of the tips and life hacks that will empower you to start every day inspired. About the Book:  Marie Kondo performs a quick tidying ritual to quiet her mind before leaving the house. The president of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, Ed Catmull, mixes three shots of espresso with three scoops of cocoa powder and two sweeteners. Fitness expert Jillian Michaels doesn't set an alarm, because her five-year-old jolts her from sleep by jumping into bed for a cuddle every morning. Part instruction manual, part someone else's diary, the authors of My Morning Routine interviewed  sixty-four of today's most successful people, including  three-time Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Soni, Twitter cofounder Biz Stone, and General Stanley McChrystal–and offer advice on creating a routine of your own. Some routines are all about early morning exercise and spartan living; others are more leisurely and self-indulgent. What they have in common is they don't feel like a chore. Once you land on the right routine, you'll look forward to waking up. This comprehensive guide will show you how to get into a routine that works for you so that you can develop the habits that move you forward. Just as a Jenga stack is only as sturdy as its foundational blocks, the choices we make throughout our day depend on the intentions we set in the morning. Like it or not, our morning habits form the stack that our whole day is built on. Whether you want to boost your productivity, implement a workout or meditation routine, or just learn to roll with the punches in the morning, this book has you covered. Olympic medalist swimmer Caroline Burckle is proof that being an Olympian is a way of life. It's an empowered MINDSET that continuously evolves to keep the athlete reaching for their absolute best, in ALL areas of their life. It’s a mindset that does not turn off after the games, which leaves the athlete a choice: to keep advancing the framework that lives within their Olympic mindset and channel it through new avenues of their life, creating opportunities that seduce them to keep reaching for greatness.  It's a choice that is not easy to embrace for so many who lived a life focused and competing at one thing on the highest level but it IS the choice this incredible woman chose post swimming career so her inspiring story is almost just beginning.  From the very beginning stages of her life, Caroline embraced her love for competitive swimming and invested her entire childhood into the college years of her life towards the development her natural talent in the sport.  On her way to the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing where she took home a bronze medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay  she won two NCAA individual championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle event and was named the 2008 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year by virtue of winning two NCAA national championships- breaking the oldest-standing women's NCAA swimming record by swimming legend Janet Evans, swimming a 4:33.60 in the 500-yard freestyle.  Her swimming accolades are incredibly impressive. What is of equal impressiveness is Caroline's self-observation, the emotional trials she faced, having the courage to be real with herself through them and the inner growth she gained from those formidable chapters in her life. We dig deep into these areas in this conversation and expand on the wisdom that was born from them. Caroline’s post Olympic career led her the development of RISE ATHELTES, a program that she and her co-founding partner Rebecca Soni offer one-on-one Olympic mentorship to athletes on a mission to succeed in both sport and life.   Her entrepreneurial spirit is also responsible for the creation of her beauty/body healing product: CaroCoco  a SUPER yummy organic rosemary oil infused coconut oil body and hair hydrator- Personally I can't get enough of it. #TRUTH.  There's A LOT we can learn from and feel inspired by from the story and mindset of this remarkable woman.  The heart, discipline, focus, relentlessness and fortitude that took this talented woman to the Olympic medal podium is so robust and is incredibly motivating to anyone who experiences her.  I'm looking forward to sharing much more of Caroline's mindset, thoughts around health/training, and life process in future episodes to come.  In the meantime, I have a feeling this episode will make you laugh, want to stretch your thinking, apply action behind the thoughts and trust your process. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much you we enjoyed recording it for you. xRx  Conversation topics include:  Carolines childhood life, discovering her love for swimming Embracing pressure with authenticity Her competitor mindset- reframing her outer expression as a competitor  Swimming highlights on the road to the Beijing games Meditation- what it means to her and her process with it Enlightenment Turning the mind off to trust the process  Discovering the blurred line between pleasure and pain ❤️ Subscribe to the podcast via Itunes here ❤️

Caroline Burckle and Rebecca Soni are both successful Olympic athletes-turned-entrepreneurs. In 2015, they Co-Founded RISE Athletes with an ambitious goal: to create a community for cultivating, creating, and discussing things that would uplift them, their peers, and the next generation of athletes.   It's not just a worthwhile goal – I love the way they are accomplishing it.   RISE is an all-inclusive mentorship and education platform. When someone signs up, they will receive weekly face-to-face video meetings with their very own Olympic Mentor, an accountability partner who can reinforce positive habits, cultivate a positive mindset for performance, and help you overcome obstacles in sport and life.   I don't know if getting a knowledgeable and supportive mentor has ever been more accessible.   There's a lot of talk these days about the power of having a Why. However, I think that before you can have a Why or a What, you need to feel worthy of one – and that starts with belief, or loving yourself.   And self-belief is one of the greatest gifts that a mentor can give their mentee. When Rebecca was a young athlete in training, she didn't necessarily sit down to consider what she was capable of. But she did know that her coach saw a lot more in her than she did at the time.   “In a way, it took a lot of pressure off of me,” because we trust our mentors and what they say is possible. When Rebecca's coach said that she would be the first woman to break 2:20 in the 200 breaststroke, it didn't make any sense to her – but 10 years later, that's exactly what happened.   Caroline had almost the same experience. “And it wasn't necessarily the thing he was telling me, but the belief and the feeling that I was being supported, that someone believed in me, and that I was significant.”   Caroline, Rebecca, and all of the mentors at RISE seek to provide that same level of support and belief to all of their mentees. Because regardless of the outcome, when we know that we have someone in our corner, that goes a long way towards achieving greatness.   --     Resources: Learn more at https://rise-athletes.com/ (RISE-athletes.com) Connect with Caroline: CarolineBurckle.com | Instagram | Facebook Connect with Rebecca: RebeccaSoni.com | Instagram | Facebook Read: Surf Shacks: An Eclectic Compilation of Surfers' Homes from Coast to Coast   --   We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Super human and trainer to the elite (Tennis star Maria Sharapova, Olympic swimmer Rebecca Soni, Basketball playermTroy Murphy), Tommy Cassano has a solution you need to take on. Ahem, it's all about biohacking your thoughts into actions and receiving the rewards of this process. Self-discovery of cracking into living a life of truth, straight down to the core elements begins with setting your intentions as to where you want to go with your goals. Tommy works with high level executives in training them not just externally (physically speaking), but internally (mentally grounded). His high vibrational energy for life and the gratitude he holds resonates outwards - this is the key to his ultra racing successes, his business successes, and why he sleeps like a king - and why he believes you should sleep naked... Another key point to take away is that Tommy never puts a price tag on his health - Yes sir Tommy! When I use the word “best” in reference to my guests, I mean it.Today's guest truly earns the adjective. If you follow the sport of competitive swimming, then this woman needs no introduction. Quite simply put, Rebecca Soni is one of the most accomplished athletes in the world, period. Here are just a few of her notables:2-time Olympian (2008 / 2012)6-time Olympic medalistMultiple world record holder1st woman to earn back to back Olympic Gold Medals in the 200-meter breaststrokeBroke the World Record in the 200-meter breaststroke in consecutive Olympiads (2008 / 2012)First woman in history to break the 2:20 barrier in the 200-meter breaststroke6-time NCAA Champion at USC2x “World Swimmer Of The Year” (2010 & 2011)In other words, don't mess with Reb. But meet her on the street and you'd never know just how badass she is — her sweetNESS and genuine humility simply won't allow it.If you know me, you know swimming is my first love. So anytime I get the chance to talk on the subject, it’s going to be long — sorry just can't help it. This conversation holds true, running at around 2 ½ hours. So I'm breaking the interview up into 2 parts. Part 1 today (Sunday night — 6.1.14); Part 2 will post sometime Thursday — 6.5.14.Good stuff. A compelling journey through the the ups and downs of Rebecca’s unparalleled career, we dig deep into:The mental aspects of peak performance, including Rebecca's personal struggles;Rebecca's early years as a young swimmer in New Jersey raised by Hungarian immigrants; The important role of coaches have played in her career;Social media pressures on the global Olympic stage; Her perspective on being a positive role model for young women; Her evolving perspective on nutrition & new found embrace of the plant-based lifestyle; The performance impacts of different modalities of training (volume vs. intensity); Her transition from celebrity athlete to civilian retirement; andAtlas Ventures- Rebecca's start up with fellow Olympian Ariana Kukors devoted to “brain training” the next generation of champion athletes.“Legend” is a word that gets bandied about all too loosely these days. But Rebecca more than earns the mantle and the respect the term truly deserves. She is a legend in the truest sense and her legacy in sport will more than stand the test of time.Plus, she's super cool. After the show she hung out at our house with my kids and her dog Cody (you can hear him hanging around the pod in the background), let us play around with her gold medals and was basically just a delight. It was an honor to spend a few hours with her and couldn’t be more pleased to bring this conversation to you. I sincerely hope you enjoy it!Peace + Plants,PS – Here's my friend John Brenkus of ESPN's Sports Science breaking down just what makes Rebecca's breaststroke technique so, well, unique:SHOW NOTESConnect With Rebecca Soni: Website | Twitter | Instagram* Atlas Ventures: theatlasventures.com* Rebecca Soni Breaks World Record | 200-Meter Breaststroke | 2012 London Olympics See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
