On episode twenty-five of Mindful Warrior Radio, we welcome Caroline Burckle, an Olympic athlete, performance coach, and entrepreneur. After her Olympic career, Caroline went on to chase the next high. Even though she had moved on from sports to become an entrepreneur, the desire for validation and feeling she was “not enough” moved with her into her new profession. It was then that Caroline began to explore the interconnection between her bouts of depression, her physical injuries, and her mental health. She figured there must be a better way “to do this.” By this, she meant a deeper understanding of the somatic connection between mind and body. Caroline pursued her interest in the mind-body connection with zeal and went on to earn a Masters in Sport Psychology She also started a company with fellow Olympic medalist, Rebecca Soni, to help youth athletes improve their mental wellness and preparedness. Together, they hired a team of Olympians to mentor and support up-and-coming youth to achieve greater mental-emotional well-being as athletes. Today, Caroline wants everyone to know they can rewrite their script by firing on all cylinders—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Her professional work blends creativity, empathy, and movement. Caroline believes feelings are information, not a prescription. When we learn how to understand what our feelings are telling us in both our body and mind, we can work with them, not against them. Ultimately, Caroline believes that the goal isn't just to become great, but to know who you are when you become great. In our recent interview, Caroline talks about the challenges of competing with a dysregulated nervous system. She says, “My worst races...my worst performances were when I was either in fight or flight, or in shut down. Both of those ends of the spectrum can be detrimental to any athlete.” She also describes her post-athletic career healing process. “No one is going to save you. This is up to you. And you have to figure this out and go through this process. And it was not pretty. There were months and months of feeling like I was getting worse. And then you realize you get worse before you get better.” Caroline also reminds us of the importance of identifying behavioral patterns. “If you don't address it at some point, it will catch up to you because the same patterns you can use to compete and perform well do not necessarily serve you in everyday life.” To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

If only what worked for everyone else worked for you. The amount of times you hear “oh, I just started meditation, and that fixed all my mindset challenges.” “you know when I began journaling, that solved all my issues.” “it was a psychedelic trip that changed my mentality.” Well, great for that person. But what about for you? 99.9% of your DNA is genetically identical to mine. That doesn't mean we should follow the same programming, even if we have identical goals. It doesn't mean our coaches should speak to us in the same way, even if we go to the same gym. It doesn't mean my mindset practise and yours should be identical. Mindset is one-size-fits-one. Are you driven by numbers and quantifiable data? Or is it the feeling that drives performance? Do you want to succeed because deep down you want to be loved, or do you want to succeed to prove yourself to the world? You are you; not only because of your parents' genetic data being passed down to you, but because of their parents' DNA sequences being passed down to them. And so on and so forth since the first living entity on earth. That's incredibly unique. Then, you have to consider the fact that every single experience you've ever had - every conversation, every reprimand, every pass you made in your school team, every particle of light entering your retina, has shaped you in one way or another. You - are unique; beautifully so. So you've got to find out what works for you. That means certain failure many times. That means stepping away from conformity and safety. That means being taken out by the unknown. But if you really want to express the most brilliant version of you, you need an idiosyncratic approach - that is an approach that is shaped to your needs. In this interview with US Olympic swimmer, artist, and founder of RISE athletes, Caroline Burckle, the main theme is this one of finding what works for you, specifically are you a thinker or a feeler? Expect to also learn, how to find your one-size-fits-one approach how you can regulate your nervous system better, the warning signs you're not regulated, when split times hurt performance and much more. If you enjoy the show, remember to subscribe to get more interviews with athletes and coaches to take you to your next level.
Imagine this. You stand on a podium, national anthem playing, the whole world is focused on you. For that moment, it's what you dreamed of, making it on the Olympic podium with a medal around your neck. You step off the podium and boom, you realize that your career is complete. This is familiar for Olympians Rebecca Soni and Caroline Burckle. But, what may seem like the end of a story was only just the beginning. This week we hear the untold story of RISE Athletes. What Caroline & Rebecca did as athletes that made them stand out from the rest didn't solely have to do with technique in the pool, but rather what was going on in their body and their minds. This journey is about RISING UP. And, we are proud to have a team that is on a mission to change the world alongside us.

Today's guest is Caroline Burckle, a professional athlete who swam in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. After being mentally and physically wrecked by the end of her experience with competitive sport, she co-founded RISE Athletes, a virtual mentoring program where professional and olympic athletes empower youth athletes with transferable skills to impact sport and life performance, helping to better prepare them for the mental and physical challenges of navigating athletic competition at the highest level.Caroline spent a decade in pursuit of her Olympic goal and spent a decade thereafter understanding her pain, and it is this work that helped her blend art, mindset, and sport to discover herself, her shadows, her light, her movement, and her purpose. In this episode, Caroline reflects on her role as a ‘feeler' and the belief systems she created at a young age that equated self-worth with achievement. She also speaks candidly about her mental health journey and shares how the work she does today was informed by her own mental health struggles as an athlete, as well as her current mission to help others understand how we can utilize our emotions as information rather than suppressing them. We also touch on the mind-body connection, healing trauma through Somatic Experiencing, and Caroline's past and present perceptions of success, plus so much more! This conversation provides a fascinating peek behind the curtain of what it's actually like to be an Olympic athlete. It also offers further evidence that your purpose is likely hiding in whatever you perceive to be your biggest obstacle in life. Make sure to join us as we dive into the backstory of Caroline Burckle and see exactly how a swimming pool in Kentucky became the gateway to finding her purpose!

2008 Olympian and Olympic medalist Caroline Burckle sat down to discuss one of the biggest topics of the 2020 Olympic Games: mental health for athletes. This was brought to the forefront of the Games when Olympic gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from the team competition. Burckle emphasizes that when she was competing, it would have been helpful to merely have someone to talk to consistently about struggles she was going through in or out of the pool, and cherishes the times she did get to have those conversations. Burckle is no stranger to lending that listening ear, having started RISE Athletes with Co-Olympian Rebecca Soni, a business that provides young athletes with mentors who have been at the top of their sport and know the ups and downs that come with it. We sat down with Olympic icons and RISE Athlete Co-Founders Caroline Burckle and Rebecca Soni to speak about mental wellness vs. mental fortitude, especially as it relates to the US Olympic Trials and Olympic Games. Burckle and Soni both speak candidly about their experiences at both competitions and how, although they did have outlets to express their emotions in one way or another during their swimming careers, they wish there had been more of a conversation about mental wellness 10 years ago. Through RISE, Burckle and Soni are providing current athletes with mentors that will have the conversations relating to mental health and emotional awareness that the 2 Olympians missed out on. Caroline believes in the power of mind+body connection, and has used her physical setbacks as blessings to learn more deeply about the power of the nervous system in all that we create. She is deeply into the arts, and freehand sketches her unconventional “human form figures” as a form of mental-movement. She lives for her open water ocean swims and free-spirited nature travels when she isn’t at home building RISE.
Working out offers a healthy path towards self-actualization. But it can also be used to avoid ‘working in’, perpetuating denial of that which must be confronted. What’s the difference between the two? Ask Chris Hauth + Caroline Burckle and they’ll both agree: the answer is intention.Over the last few years, it’s been a tradition to host periodic performance fitness deep dives with my long-time coach, Olympian, former professional triathlete, and fellow endurance fanatic Chris Hauth in a series erstwhile referred to as Coach’s Corner. Unfortunately, the pandemic derailed the regularity of this institution, our last observance of this sacred ritual conducted exactly one year ago on Zoom.In apologetic atonement for this grievous oversight, today we restore balance to the Universe, graced with the presence of not one but two Olympians because Chris and myself are joined by Caroline Burckle—an audience favorite many of you will fondly recall from RRP #565 this past December. For those new to the show, Chris is a sub-9 hour Ironman champion, a former Olympic Swimmer, a veteran of many an ultra-endurance challenge, my ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship teammate, and one of the world’s most respected endurance coaches.Caroline (Burks) is a former swimmer & Olympic medalist with 23 All American titles, 2 NCAA individual victories & NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year accolades to her name. She runs RISE, a mentor program that pairs Olympic athletes with young elite athletes for support and guidance. This is a super fun round table discussion on how to bring purpose and intention to our strength and endurance goals. It’s about how to create opportunities for personal growth, resilience, and the adaptability that athletic performance and this pandemic present and demand. It’s about the power of self-curated adventures in lieu of formal competition. It’s about what sport can teach us about patience, self-love, and discipline. And it’s about showing up and doing not only the physical work but also the internal work.In other words, it’s not just about working out. It’s also about working in.To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Chris & Caroline are two of my favorite people. Caroline Burckle reached the highest levels in swimming: NCAA champion, Olympic bronze medalist (2008 – 800free relay). But it’s what she’s building outside the pool that may outshine her swimming career. Together with fellow Olympian Rebecca Soni, Burckle runs Rise-Athletes, a mentorship platform where professional athletes work 1:1 with young athletes on mindset development and mental health skills. In this episode we discuss the Rise approach to guiding young athletes, as well as what its like to start and run your own business. We also get into some of Caroline’s experiences working with different coaches and the learning and adaptation process it takes to get coach and athlete on the same page to achieve the best outcome. We talk about her experience with body image and advice for coaches on how to manage interactions with their athletes in the most helpful way. Caroline is charismatic and insightful. She’s up front, and down to earth. A few minutes with Caroline and you know you’re with a high-achiever. You’re going to enjoy this one!
Becoming an Olympic medalist doesn’t tell the story. It wasn’t until the klieg lights dimmed that she was compelled to meet herself. The inner journey that ensued forged the amazing person she’s now become.Meet Caroline Burckle. Friends call her Burks.A fellow former competitive swimmer, today’s guest is a 23-time All American and 2-time NCAA Champion. In 2008, she was crowned NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year in recognition of breaking Janet Evans’ legendary 500 freestyle NCAA record—a seemingly impossible task and the oldest record on the books at the time. Later that same year, Caroline would qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where she won bronze as a member of the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay.More interesting however, and certainly more relatable, is Caroline’s path post-swimming. A close cousin to my conversations with Olympians Anthony Ervin, Apolo Ohno and John Moffet, hers is a hard-wrought journey of self-discovery shrouded in institutional neglect and even, at times, abuse. Let’s just say she weathered some shit. But she faced it. She showed up and did the work. And she emerged at peace with her past and her self—now hellbent on helping forge healthier lives for the next generation of Olympians.Beyond the play-by-play of Caroline’s storied career, her experiences as a young swimmer, and what it was like to stand on the Olympic podium, this is a conversation about the psychological struggles she faced as a prodigious athlete. Her battle with depression. And her familiar addiction to people-pleasing.It’s also an alarming exposé on the harmful paradigms perpetuated by calcified athletic institutions—and what we must be done to better support the next generation of Olympians. But more than anything, this is a playbook on how to find power in vulnerability. How to listen to your body. And most importantly, how to use your voice. One of my very favorite people, Burks and I are buddies going back several years. A powerhouse and a humble empath, her energy is infectious. And I’m honored to share her story with you today. The visually inclined can watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.May her words inspire you to seek own your truth. To ask for help. Lean into vulnerability. And never stop learning.P.S. We sat down with 2008 Olympian and NCAA champion Caroline Burckle. Caroline has a very unique perspective when it comes to swimming. While her brother Clark will tell you that he was always focused on times and stats, Caroline set goals in a much different way. She saw herself at Olympic trials, or winning the NCAA meet, but never had a time in mind for her races. Burckle just knew what she wanted to do and worked toward it until she got there. Caroline Burckle, by her own admission, is not your 'normal' swimmer, and for many years battled to try fit the mould of what a swimmer should be. But, when she embraced her difference she began to excel - and what a swimming career it was. Caroline was a member of the United States 4 x 200m Freestyle relay team that won bronze at the Beijing Olympic Games, was voted Outstanding Female College Swimmer in 2008 after breaking the longest standing women's NCAA record in the 500y Freestyle (that of swimming legend Janet Evans), and was the recipient of the prestigious Honda Sports Award. In this episode Caroline gives a very honest account of how her curiosity helped her in the (ongoing) process of figuring herself out, re-defining herself after transitioning out of swimming and using her creativity to confront her own mental health struggles. Caroline now runs her own business called Rise Athletes with fellow Olympian Rebecca Soni (a mentorship programme for youth athletes) is a swimwear designer and artist. One week ago today, my first book, Master The Key: A Story To Free Your Potential, Find Meaning and Live Life On Purpose, debuted on Amazon – and you all showed up in a purposeful way! Together, we made https://geni.us/masterthekey (Master The Key) a #1 bestseller in spiritual growth on day one, top three in the interpersonal relationships on day two, and #29 in new releases in the personal transformation category on day three. Just being ranked in that category was one of my BHAGs, and just to put that in perspective, Oprah Winfrey was #1 at the time. So, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all again. I am humbled by the way you all showed up and I have nothing but gratitude for you. But we're still just getting started, and I am so excited to see where this journey takes us. And today, I want to share two more of the people who endorsed and influenced my book: Dr. Jim Afremow and Caroline Burckle. This week in thoughts on we are talking Process Or The process as we hear it.These two words conceal a world of reflection and adaptation in our approach to achieving our goals. In terms of application sport is a great analogy for many of us. The often short-sighted approach to sport is to focus on the outcome exclusively. Winning. Yet this approach will challenge us if chased without respect for how to get there and that is the process. The physical, mental and spiritual approach to realising potential which for a growing number of athletes and movers we speak to is the holy grail by which they measure their performance and progress. We catch up with Caroline Burckle, swimmer and Olympic medallist in the Beijing 2008 olympics. Olympic medal winning is from the outside the pinnacle and job done for an athlete but as we hear from Caro the way we approach is the key. These conceptual frameworks can often be challenging to grasp, requiring consistent sincere practice to integrate them in our daily lives but when they are there, as with anything practiced in this way they become stronger and stronger. You can follow Caro @caroburckle and her company Rise @riseathletes an athlete mentoring program connecting the new generation with seasoned pros who guide them forward.
In this week’s episode of the podcast, Carl sits down with his friend Caroline Burckle - Olympic Swimmer and Co-Founder of Rise Athletes. Caroline is not only a top level swimmer who stood on the podium with a bronze medal around her neck at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Caroline is someone who understands performance beyond the physical. Caroline gets it when it comes to developing the mental and emotional side of performance as well. In this conversation Caroline shares how at a young age she went from feeling like anything was possible to being overcome with a cloud of expectations when realizing the hard road she had ahead of herself to get to the Olympics. Caroline discusses how she dealt with this feeling and was able to eliminate all distractions to keep her on the path. Caroline also shares what it was like making it to the Olympics, spending time in the Olympic village, and how she met Usain Bolt 3 days prior to him making history. She also shares what she felt standing on the podium after dedicating every moment of her life leading up to that day to swimming. Carl and Caroline discuss her transition from swimming to focusing on school, where after going through a dark period of time she had a breakthrough one day when she got together with her fellow Olympic swimmer Rebecca Soni. Burckle and Soni discussed how hard it was to retire and acknowledged the importance of having mentorship as a young athlete so one can develop a mindset that can transcend their sport and carry over to all aspects of life, which became the inception of Rise Athletes - A company dedicated to developing the Athlete Mindset with an Olympian mentor. Caroline also shares how growing up although she was in great shape, she struggled with body image, relationships, and later in life became plagued with injuries that were caused by trauma she had been holding onto for years but was able to finally release and find healing. Caroline is now operating at a whole new level which she shared in this episode and how she is expressing it through her work at RISE, her physical practice, and her passion for design. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carlpaoli/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlpaoli/support

You can do anything you want and that's scary as shit.” [36:30] Quieting the noise & little let go’s “So it's like sitting with it, understanding what mountain you just made of these thoughts or these beliefs, and then one by one letting it go, releasing it out into the universe and it's not yours anymore.” “I'll lay on my floor and just do the whole scan head to toe, and tighten your eyes and your nose and your mouth and your ears and your shoulders and just all the way down. It's tighten and release, tighten and release. And that's again small let go’s.” [44:10] Creating small changes to look back at the process “You're always gonna look back and I would hope you would be able to look back at whatever you're looking back at, and understand the process there, and understand the small steps that you did to get to that peak.” [49:02] Your life is your message “You are here on this planet. That's enough of a message at first, so accepting that and being open to that and knowing that your life is worth it before you feel that you need to deliver a specific message.” [50:12] Motivation mindset & sticking with it “What's a time in your life that you've been motivated and done something and been really pleased about it?” Thank you listeners!! This week, we've got an insightful conversation with 2008 Olympic medalist Caroline Burckle. Caroline dives into the commitment and mindset necessary to perform and prevail at the highest levels. She also talks candidly about the perils of that singular focus – the lesser discussed downside to win-at-all-costs mindsets and tying our identity to our times, [...] The post BHP 044: Caroline Burckle | Olympic Medalist on Purpose, Identity, and Commitment appeared first on Ryan Munsey.
Caroline "Caro" Burckle of RISE Athletes competed at the highest levels; Pan Ams, World Championships, and the Olympics. An uber talented swimmer with a heart of gold and personality to match. On this episode of Black Flag Radio we have a conversation about what happens next. The psychology of when the curtain closes. How do we identify ourselves before, during, and after competition and or training. Where and what to should attach value. The highs and lows of athletes, and how to respond. Caroline's refreshing honesty and journey provides all of us with tremendous lessons we can apply inside and outside the gym or arena, including some fun with floating meditation and sketching!
Caroline Burckle is an Olympic Bronze Medalist, Co-Founder, and Mind Mentor for Rise Athletes. Today we talk about Caroline’s inspiration in the water, her mind being both her greatest asset and greatest limiter, and what its like retiring from a career as a professional athlete and having to find a new purpose and identity.
Yes I had a little unscheduled break since the last episode but this one is worth waiting for! In Episode 4 I speak with former Olympic swimmer Caroline Burckle. We talk about her experiences training and preparing for the 2008 Olympics before diving head first into the what happens next part. Caroline is refreshingly honest when recounting the story of dealing with the aftermath of such an intense experience. She shares her journey of creating a new life outside of the realm of professional swimming and the importance of trusting that things will work out if you allow yourself the room to get creative. Although most of us will never know what it is like to be an Olympic swimmer, we can all relate to working through personal struggles. Caroline's honesty about her own mind body disconnect and her struggle with hormonal issues and adrenal fatigue offer a great insight into issues that many people face and perhaps do not know how to address. This is a story about an epic journey, a personal recreation and a belief in being more. I would also like to thank my Goldendoodle puppy Dory for the sound effects about half way through!! As ever thanks for listening and if you would like to share your story with the Achieving Awesome podcast please do not hesitate to reach out info@achievingawesome.co Looking for inspiration visit www.achievingawesome.co
This week, Sarah Ehekircher joins me to discuss Bob Bowman in the wake of Scott Reid's reporting that Bowman sent "aggressive" text messages (along with his friend Sean Hutchison) to Caroline Burckle in 2011. We also talk about what wasn't included in the reporting- the actual content of the texts.Sarah and I get into a lot of the nuance, including Bowman's statement and what USA Swimming had to say on the matter. We also respond to some of the lines of attack that have been used to attack Burckle since she came forward. Permalink

Olympic medalist swimmer Caroline Burckle is proof that being an Olympian is a way of life. It's an empowered MINDSET that continuously evolves to keep the athlete reaching for their absolute best, in ALL areas of their life. It’s a mindset that does not turn off after the games, which leaves the athlete a choice: to keep advancing the framework that lives within their Olympic mindset and channel it through new avenues of their life, creating opportunities that seduce them to keep reaching for greatness. It's a choice that is not easy to embrace for so many who lived a life focused and competing at one thing on the highest level but it IS the choice this incredible woman chose post swimming career so her inspiring story is almost just beginning. From the very beginning stages of her life, Caroline embraced her love for competitive swimming and invested her entire childhood into the college years of her life towards the development her natural talent in the sport. On her way to the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing where she took home a bronze medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay she won two NCAA individual championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle event and was named the 2008 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year by virtue of winning two NCAA national championships- breaking the oldest-standing women's NCAA swimming record by swimming legend Janet Evans, swimming a 4:33.60 in the 500-yard freestyle. Her swimming accolades are incredibly impressive. What is of equal impressiveness is Caroline's self-observation, the emotional trials she faced, having the courage to be real with herself through them and the inner growth she gained from those formidable chapters in her life. We dig deep into these areas in this conversation and expand on the wisdom that was born from them. Caroline’s post Olympic career led her the development of RISE ATHELTES, a program that she and her co-founding partner Rebecca Soni offer one-on-one Olympic mentorship to athletes on a mission to succeed in both sport and life. Her entrepreneurial spirit is also responsible for the creation of her beauty/body healing product: CaroCoco a SUPER yummy organic rosemary oil infused coconut oil body and hair hydrator- Personally I can't get enough of it. #TRUTH. There's A LOT we can learn from and feel inspired by from the story and mindset of this remarkable woman. The heart, discipline, focus, relentlessness and fortitude that took this talented woman to the Olympic medal podium is so robust and is incredibly motivating to anyone who experiences her. I'm looking forward to sharing much more of Caroline's mindset, thoughts around health/training, and life process in future episodes to come. In the meantime, I have a feeling this episode will make you laugh, want to stretch your thinking, apply action behind the thoughts and trust your process. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much you we enjoyed recording it for you. xRx Conversation topics include: Carolines childhood life, discovering her love for swimming Embracing pressure with authenticity Her competitor mindset- reframing her outer expression as a competitor Swimming highlights on the road to the Beijing games Meditation- what it means to her and her process with it Enlightenment Turning the mind off to trust the process Discovering the blurred line between pleasure and pain ❤️ Subscribe to the podcast via Itunes here ❤️

What does it take to be an Olympic athlete? Secrets revealed! But, it's not what you think... Caroline Burckle, I'm still trying to catch my breath. Swimmer, "Lifer", Leader! Caroline won two NCAA individual championships in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle event in 2008, and was named the 2008 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year by winning two NCAA national championships and breaking the oldest-standing women's NCAA swimming record by swimming a 4:33.60 in the 500-yard freestyle! This was just one of her amazing highlights in college. She soon framed her mindset on the bigger picture within her swimming career - the OLYMPICS!!! At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Caroline placed fourth in the 200-meter freestyle, earning a place on the Olympic swim team for the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. She also placed fourth in the 400-meter freestyle and fifth in the 800-meter freestyle in Omaha per individual racing. WOW!!! Off to the Beijing 2008 Olympics she would go and at the 2008 Olympic Games, Caroline earned a bronze medal swimming in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Caroline swam the lead-off leg in the preliminary heats in 1:57.86 - THAT's FAST!!! - and was selected to swim in the final. She swam the third leg of the final in 1:56.70 - THAT's FASTER!!! She filled her life with Swimming + Training. Now that she has retired from that competitive sport - swimming athletically + for pleasure these days - she is leading athletes of this generation with mindful practices on how they too can go for any goal they are striving for! Rise Athlete co-founder and NOW natural skincare creator, Caroline is NOT stopping at anything she pours her heart in to. Caroline Burckle and Rebecca Soni are both successful Olympic athletes-turned-entrepreneurs. In 2015, they Co-Founded RISE Athletes with an ambitious goal: to create a community for cultivating, creating, and discussing things that would uplift them, their peers, and the next generation of athletes. It's not just a worthwhile goal – I love the way they are accomplishing it. RISE is an all-inclusive mentorship and education platform. When someone signs up, they will receive weekly face-to-face video meetings with their very own Olympic Mentor, an accountability partner who can reinforce positive habits, cultivate a positive mindset for performance, and help you overcome obstacles in sport and life. I don't know if getting a knowledgeable and supportive mentor has ever been more accessible. There's a lot of talk these days about the power of having a Why. However, I think that before you can have a Why or a What, you need to feel worthy of one – and that starts with belief, or loving yourself. And self-belief is one of the greatest gifts that a mentor can give their mentee. When Rebecca was a young athlete in training, she didn't necessarily sit down to consider what she was capable of. But she did know that her coach saw a lot more in her than she did at the time. “In a way, it took a lot of pressure off of me,” because we trust our mentors and what they say is possible. When Rebecca's coach said that she would be the first woman to break 2:20 in the 200 breaststroke, it didn't make any sense to her – but 10 years later, that's exactly what happened. Caroline had almost the same experience. “And it wasn't necessarily the thing he was telling me, but the belief and the feeling that I was being supported, that someone believed in me, and that I was significant.” Caroline, Rebecca, and all of the mentors at RISE seek to provide that same level of support and belief to all of their mentees. Because regardless of the outcome, when we know that we have someone in our corner, that goes a long way towards achieving greatness. -- Resources: Learn more at https://rise-athletes.com/ (RISE-athletes.com) Connect with Caroline: CarolineBurckle.com | Instagram | Facebook Connect with Rebecca: RebeccaSoni.com | Instagram | Facebook Read: Surf Shacks: An Eclectic Compilation of Surfers' Homes from Coast to Coast -- We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels. Some people are wonderfully infectious with their smile and enthusiasm. Caroline Burckle is one of those people. Not only is she a positive force that transcends the 2 dimensional boundaries of social media, but she mentors athletes who are rising stars through her RISE LIFE business. Caroline is a veteran in what goes on behind the scenes of human performance. She knows about pressure, accomplishments, and hard work. She has personal experience with overtraining. Caroline is a Bronze Medalist Swimmer performing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 4 x 200m relay. Not only that, she took gold in the 2007 Pan Am Games in the 800m freestyle, was the 2x NCAA champ, and was named the 2008 NCAA Swimmer of the Year! I first found Caroline on Instagram and we instantly became online friends. After only a few conversations with her, I was inspired by her energy, her commitment to personal growth, and her journey. She was training to race the Othillo Swim Run World Championships with Hilary as her teammate and was planning to share the journey with Rich Roll and Chris Hauth. (Check out this New York Times article on the event and on Rich and Chris' adventure.) Caroline suffered an unfortunate injury and fractured her heel (calcaneus) and had to pull out resulting in over 4 months of forced rest. During that time, she decided to dig deep into the depth of her soul to continue learning more about herself. “If you don’t have patience the best athlete will not be able to materialize.”Chris HauthToday I am joined by Olympians Chris Hauth and Caroline Burckle for another edition of Coach's Corner – a spin on my typical podcast format where I go deep and get granular on the physical, mental and emotional aspects of sport, fitness, training and lifestyle.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is the current Age Group Ironman World Champion, a former Olympic Swimmer and one of the world's most respected endurance coaches. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he's not training and racing, Chris runs AIMP Coaching, mentoring a wide spectrum of athletes ranging from elite professionals — including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and Olympic Trials qualifiers — to first time half-marathoners.Whether you are an elite or just starting out, Chris knows how to get the best out of athletes the right way. A friend and mentor as much as a coach, I have been under Chris' tutelage since 2008, during which time he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships ('08, '09 & '11), EPIC5 in 2010 and is currently preparing me for the impending Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in Sweden this September, an event we will race together — literally tethered to each other — as a team. Also joining us today (albeit briefly) is my friend Caroline Burkle (@caroburckle). One of the funnest people you will ever meet, Burks is a former Olympic medalist in swimming from the University of Florida, where she was a 23-time All American swimmer, won 2 individual NCAA titles (200 free & 500 free) and was named 2008 NCAA Female Swimmer of the Year. In addition to breaking the oldest then standing women’s NCAA record in the 500 free (with a blazing 4:33), she earned a Bronze medal in the 4×200 free relay at the 2008 Olympics.Caroline has a Masters of Science in Sports Psychology & Motor Behavior from the University of Tennessee and when she’s not training like crazy, she works with young athletes under RISE Elite Athletes, a company she founded that pairs Olympic athletes with young athletes for mentorship and guidance.Today we sit down for a brief (by the standards of this podcast) check in from Lake Tahoe — site of our recent high altitude training camp — for a state-of-the-union on our preparation for the Ötillö Swimrun World Championsips, just 18 days from the date of this posting.Within the frame of this conversation you also will find a number of helpful fitness, training and general wellness takeaways germane to the listener — whether you are an elite athlete, a weekend warrior or just looking for that nudge to get off the couch.Specific subjects discussed include:* a general discussion about Chris & Rich's preparation for Ötillö* the impact of altitude training & training camps* the benefits of accountability partners* the primacy of patience for maximum success in sport* the perils of overtraining* the importance of injury preventionI could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoye...
