Are you 16 weeks out from a 70.3? Bek Keat, owner and founder of TSTC, 6x Ironman Champion, dives into strategic training and key sessions you should be doing at this point. Make sure you've got your race goals identified and what your strategic sessions will be, whether that is races or key workouts. If you're racing in April or May or June...you should be starting that 16 week plan. At TSTC we reverse engineer all our training plans based on RPE where your fitness is now...16 week out brick, 12 week out brick, 8 week out brick and a 4 week out brick. Always starting with shorter efforts, and build out to longer efforts. These key sessions will be about 3 hours, maximum of 4 hours with the run off the bike being an hour max. FTP Testing: Time and a place. Go absolutely flat out for 20 minutes. Make sure you warm up for 15-30 minutes beforehand.Best way to increase your FTP...The best ways is to do VO2 max sets, or 1 min max power efforts, time trials, strength efforts..etc.  *Lighter and leaner you are the higher your FTP will be. Coaches don't want to see all your Garmin metrics...Trust ME! We want to know how you felt? We want you to know your times(25, 50 & 100), what was your easy, what was your fast? We want you to learn how to use a pool clock! The more you think like a swimmer, the more you become a swimmer. How to use a snorkel properly and do a flip turn without getting water in your nose! Bek's thought about using flippers in the pool. Bek gives her best tips to be paying attention to in the water to keep getting faster...Make sure there is a difference between hard and easy. There should be a significant change in pace!! How to approach a hill climb in an Ironman Bike? Cadence is always the KEY! 80 is the number you want to shoot for in an Ironman. Consistency is everything! References when Rinny won in 2014. She had the most even power numbers the entire bike. Cause the whole time she strictly focused on cadence. In this month's episode of Fitter & Faster, former professional athlete turned coach Rebekah Keat joins host Emma-Kate Lidbury to talk about all aspects of getting race ready. Keat now coaches athletes of all abilities—from pros to beginners—at Team Sirius, the coaching company she leads together with her wife Siri Lindley, who coached three-time Ironman world champion Mirinda Carfrae to her world titles. With race season right around the corner here in the northern hemisphere, Keat gives us her insights and advice on those all-important weeks leading into race day. We chat through how your training should change from about six weeks out from your key race all the way through to your taper (and Keat gives us one of Carfrae's key race simulation sessions). We also talk through the psychological preparation needed, including visualization and goal setting. Keat gives us her advice on how best to set up your race week, both from a training standpoint as well as a logistical point of view. Of course, it wouldn't be Fitter & Faster without our Gear Up section with our resident gear guru Chris Foster, and in this episode Foster runs us through all the key pieces of equipment that you need to prepare well ahead of race week. We talk wetsuits, goggles, bike maintenance, and more—plus we even manage to work in a Talledega Nights reference. This show is brought to you by Shimano. Known for her devastating run splits, two-time Triathlon World Champion, Siri Lindley, dominated the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Rankings, winning 13 World Cup races between 2000-2002 and was the 2001 ITU World Champion. Her experience and talents in the sport have shone through with tremendous results, at all distances and with both elite and age group level competitors. Siri is also in demand and highly respected for her motivational speaking engagements and coaching. She is the author of Surfacing From the Depths of Self-Doubt to Winning Big and Living Fearlessly. We talked about her painful start in sport and how she used those lessons to build her best life. We also talk about her new focus with wife Rebekah-Keat, a foundation to save horses from slaughter houses. She is delightfully kind and insightful.
