Moritz Seider got his revenge on the scoreboard - not for a lack of rough stuff against the Boston Bruins. Tune in as we begin by recapping the Detroit Red Wings taking down Swayman and the Bruins in a Hockeytown rematch of last game, including: James van Riemsdyk turning back the clock, stellar performances from Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin, Emmitt Finnie, & others, Ben Chiarot continuing to be a force, John Gibson's struggles, Simon Edvinsson mixing it up as Nikita Zadorov and Mark Kastelic earned misconducts, & more as Todd McLellan's squad responded (4:50). After that and a conversation about John Gibson's continued performance issues, we take a look at the schedule ahead, Moritz Seider potentially earning Norris votes, Raymond's point streak, Patrick Kane's record, & more (19:00). Next, we break down what we've heard on the Quinn Hughes front as the Vancouver Canucks superstar continues to be the subject of trade rumors surrounding the Detroit Red Wings (and New Jersey Devils): has Steve Yzerman expressed interest? Would Danielson, Kasper, Sandin-Pellikka, Edvinsson, Bear, Brandsegg-Nygard, or others have to be included? Would he extend with the Red Wings? (31:25) Next, concern in Italy as the Olympic arena is behind (and small), & what the options are for the NHL, NHLPA, IIHF, & IOC (43:30), as well as updates on Dmitri Buchelnikov & Max Plante as we peek into the Hockeytown pipeline (51:05). All of that & lots more before we take your questions and comments in our Overtime segment (52:55) - enjoy! Red Wings vs Devils Reaction: Detroit Fights Hard, But the Data Reveals a Bigger Issue

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4–3 to the New Jersey Devils, but unlike so many of their blowout losses this season, this one showed real fight. Detroit heavily out-chanced the Devils at 5-on-5, dominated long stretches of play, and nearly tied the game with a frantic two-minute barrage in the final moments. This was one of those rare “good” losses — not something we celebrate often on Red Wings Rant — but the effort in periods two and three showed what this team can be when they lock in. Still, the problems are real. Early defensive mistakes continue to sink the Wings, with breakdowns in coverage, failed clears, and brutal giveaways repeatedly ending up in the back of the net. With Simon Edvinsson out, Detroit is forced to lean more heavily on a third pair that simply cannot keep up. And the analytics tell an even clearer story: the Wings have the 5th worst High-Danger Goals For%, league-worst Medium-Danger Goals For%, 3rd worst shooting percentage, 5th worst save percentage, and 2nd worst PDO at 5-on-5. Even at all strengths, Detroit is top-5 in expected goals but bottom-10 in both shooting and save percentage. A good team keeps beating itself. We also break down strong performances from Larkin, Raymond, Finnie, and Seider, the physical pushback the Wings showed late in the game, the awful non-call on Jonas Siegenthaler's hit to Lucas Raymond's head, and why this loss — strangely — gives us more confidence in Detroit's long-term trajectory. Plus: Emmitt Finnie makes honorable mention in The Athletic's Calder Trophy race.  Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home.  JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/rd2RUDkzuS Let's have fun! On today's show: At what temperature do you stop wearing shorts? 02:31 – Detroit Lions narrowly defeat Giants, and the season is on the line The "Cardiac Cats" deliver another stressful win: the Lions barely get by the Giants. Jer and Fletcher break down the wild ride that is the Jameis Winston experience ("more fun when it's not your team on the line!"), and how Jamir Gibbs stepped up in historic fashion. Deep dive into what's working and what isn't—especially a candid convo about Jared Goff, the offensive coordinator, and whether the Lions are too predictable. The hosts highlight what must improve for Detroit with national eyes on them for Thanksgiving against the Packers—a critical NFC North matchup. Both agree: If the Lions want a real shot at the playoffs, they basically need to win out.  11:12 – Detroit Pistons: 12-Game Win Streak and Rising Hopes The Pistons are HOT: 14-2 with a 12-game win streak, taking down Milwaukee on the road (even if Giannis was out). "Are the Pistons for real?" Discussion weighs schedule quality, team growth, the impact of new players, and how Detroit is earning national respect. Local pride watch: Shoutout to Ryan Rollins (Macomb Dakota) leading Milwaukee in the absence of their stars. Being able to expect the Pistons to win games, not just "play hard"—Detroit fans everywhere can relate how good this feels! Call to listeners for vintage Pistons gear for the studio. 18:11 – Red Wings: "Wings in Flight" and Atlantic Division Leaders Quick coverage of the Red Wings' strong season—they're leading the Atlantic and scoring with flash. Props to Dylan Larkin, DeBrincat, and Lucas Raymond, plus some talk about the Yzerplan paying off. 19:35 – Stephen Carroll retires as DCFC Captain for Front Office Role Longtime Detroit City FC captain Stephen Carroll announces retirement from the pitch but stays with the club in a (yet-to-be-named) front office role. After starting as a barista in 1996 to becoming the co-founder, owner, and Co-CEO of Biggby Coffee, this week's guest on Insight Out is Mike McFall, a growth-minded entrepreneur that believes in the power of self-awareness, positivity, and conscious capitalism as the core values of a successful business.  His book, Grind: A No-Bullshit Approach to Take Your Business from Concept to Cash Flow, focuses on the importance of revenue and practical ways to build cash flow in a budding company. He also explores his philosophy that business requires us to be aggressive and simultaneously self-aware.  In this episode, Mike and I discuss the road to becoming CEO of a successful corporation, why conscious capitalism and company culture are at the core of employee retention, why focus is a critical component in building a business, and more. In this episode, we discuss: The key lessons that sailing around the world at 16 taught Mike (3:40) Mike's journey as a Red Wings fan and the importance of visioning work (5:43) A breakdown of the visualization process (10:06) How Mike was introduced to conscious capitalism and the way it transformed his business (13:10) How Mike became partners with Bob Fish (23:44) The importance of competition in business (27:28) Why self awareness is a critical component of your business (29:43) How to ask for valuable feedback (33:10) The biggest contributor to Biggby Coffee's success (35:41) Mike's advice for aspiring or current business owners (38:26)  Why entrepreneurs need to be like the sun (44:30)  Mike's approach to fostering a people-first company (48:07) How to develop company culture that respects the employees (51:37) Where to find Mike McFall and his final word of advice (56:35)  Notable Quotes: “When you say something enough, you begin to hear yourself say it, other people hear you say it, and they can support you. And it helps to reaffirm that you're on the course to go where you want to go.” – Billy (9:26) “The real root of conscious capitalism is that it's an inclusive environment where you don't make tradeoffs between these different components and that you make decisions that everyone benefits from.” – Mike (20:29)  “Your self awareness is the most critical component to the success of your business.” – Mike (30:31)  “In the end it's not about revenue. What it's about is it's about improving, and it's an obsession with improvement. And when we obsess with improvement… the revenue generation, the growth, is a subset of the obsession with improvement.” – Mike (42:34) “Leadership is about setting the example and then living within that constantly.” – Mike (47:16) “In the end, people just want to be around other people who they relate to and they feel a connection to as another human being.” (59:19) Resources & Links: Mike McFall  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-biggby  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikejmcfall Biggby Coffee: https://www.biggby.com/  Billy Samoa Saleebey  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/billysamoa  Email: billy@podify.com and saleebey@gmail.com  Insight Out  Website: https://insightoutshow.com/ This is an encore episode and was originally published on December 30, 2022 Learn more about your ad choices. NATE THE GREAT HAS ARRIVED IN HOCKEYTOWN. After that, a look at the point paces of Raymond, Dylan Larkin, and Alex DeBrincat (Team USA hopeful?), and whether they can reach new heights in Hockeytown this season (22:35). Next, a look at how tight the Eastern Conference playoff race is compared to the West in the NHL, as the Red Wings eye a divisional seed over teams like the Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning, & other previous top teams (34:45). We then discuss Hockeytown pipeline prospects: Sebastian Cossa returning to the Grand Rapids Griffins while Carter Mazur is out long term, Trey Augustine dominating with Michigan State as the Spartans truck through the NCAA, Brent Solomon signing with Wisconsin, & more (45:50). After that, NHL news including Adrian Kempe's contract & what it means for Steve Yzerman's free agency options (and how Yzerman will need to be more aggressive with trades), MacKinnon, Crosby, Celebrini, & Bedard leading the league, Copp, Compher, Talbot, & Gibson being linked in trade theories, and Patrick Roy blowing up on Mikko Rantanen (49:20). Red Wings Rant — Episode Narrative (Nov 19) “20 Games In: First Place… and Still Flawed?” The Detroit Red Wings reached the 20-game mark in first place in the Atlantic Division — a sentence that would've sounded insane seven days ago, when this team was stuck in the mud, blowing leads, and wrestling with its identity. And the wildest part? Both versions of the Red Wings — the playoff version, and the meltdown version — showed up this week. Last Week: A Test of Consistency We said: If the Wings could take advantage of a soft stretch — Ducks, Sabres, Rangers, Kraken — they could claw back into a strong position. One week later? They did exactly that. They handled Anaheim, threw away a 4–1 lead vs Buffalo but still got a point, gutted out a win at MSG, and closed out the Kraken with a mature, structured third period — something they haven't done most of the season. That's growth. That's progress. But the path to get here still tells us a lot about the team. Game Management: The New Buzzword That Actually Matters Todd McLellan has hammered this theme all year: “Until this group figures out what's important at certain times, we're going to have those nights.” Against Buffalo? Total collapse. Against New York and Seattle? Finally, the shutdown hockey he's been begging for. The Seattle third period wasn't flashy — five shots allowed, perfect breakouts, clean faceoffs, pucks deep, smart changes. It was the most professional 20 minutes this team has played this season. This is what real playoff teams do. But the challenge now is: Can it be repeated? Stars Are Driving the Bus Larkin, DeBrincat, and Raymond are all pacing career-level seasons: Larkin: 600 points + scoring at a star level Cat: Tenacious, complete, and reliable no matter the line Raymond: Finally looking healthy — nine points in his last four And Moritz Seider is quietly playing elite two-way hockey despite a few headline-grabbing mistakes. The Rookies: High Impact, High Volatility The 2023 class stole the show early, then went quiet… …and came roaring back against Seattle: Danielson's first NHL goal Nearly another (called back) Finnie's power-play goal after Danielson set him up ASP steadying after a rough stretch These three have brought energy AND mistakes — but the energy has clearly returned to the lineup. Goaltending: The Split Is Clear Cam Talbot: +1 GSAX, making the saves Detroit needs Steady, calm, veteran presence John Gibson: 11th-worst GSAX, sub-.875 save percentage High-danger rebounds, bad-angle goals, and collapsing confidence around him Detroit's Jekyll-and-Hyde identity? It's not just game management. It's also which goalie is in the net. 20-Game Snapshot: The Good and The Questions What's working: Stars producing PK massively improved Rookies making real contributions Defensive improvements in structure Third-period closure vs Seattle In playoff position despite flaws 1st place in the division at the quarter-mark What still needs answers: Will this team ever find consistent scoring from the middle six? Can Gibson turn it around? Can they avoid the rookie wall? Will they protect leads consistently? Can they replicate the Seattle third period against real contenders? This is a good team. It might even be a playoff team. But the story for the next 62 games is simple: Are the Red Wings learning how to win? Or surviving despite themselves? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
