WWP NIGHT w/ the GRAND RAPIDS GRIFFINS TICKETS ON SALE NOW: griffinshockey.com/wwp As the offseason begins to wind down, we're back with another (remote) episode of the Winged Wheel Podcast ft. Max Bultman of The Athletic Detroit to take advantage of the downtime! We start by discussing the recent changes to the CBA, and how the NHL's implementation plan on certain shifts can benefit Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings when it comes to extending Simon Edvinsson and Marco Kasper. Can Hockeytown's core be solidified with more contracts like Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, and Lucas Raymond's? (3:55) We then discuss the earlier implementation of the Stanley Cup Playoffs salary cap and whether that means teams like Florida or Vegas would have to shed cap - could someone like Evan Rodrigues be on Steve Yzerman's radar to add to McLellan's Detroit Red Wings? (23:25) After announce WWP Night w/ the Grand Rapids Griffins details (35:35), we take an opportunity to review some mailbag "who says no" trade proposals: McTavish, Karlsson, Sandin Pellikka, Danielson, Bear, Connor, & more - would any of these deals make sense? In this Summer Coolers edition of NHL Wraparound, hosts Neil Smith and Vic Morren examine the Detroit Red Wings—a franchise inching toward contention but still battling to break through. It's been nine consecutive seasons without a playoff berth in Hockeytown. The last time the Red Wings won a playoff series? Back in 2013.Now, under Steve Yzerman's front office leadership, Detroit hopes that one major offseason swing—a trade for John Gibson—can stabilize their goaltending and finally push them over the edge. Will it be enough?IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Red Wings: A decade of frustration[00:36] Power play high, penalty kill worst in the league[01:00] John Gibson acquisition: a franchise-altering gamble?[02:00] Goaltending swap: Gibson for Mrazek[02:45] Other offseason additions: JVR, Appleton, Hamonic[03:50] Prospect pool preview: Danielson, Mazur, Cossa[04:30] Offensive core: DeBrincat, Larkin, Raymond, Kane[05:15] Is there enough depth if someone goes down?[06:00] Playoff competition: Too many contenders, too few spotsKEY TAKEAWAYS:John Gibson is the swing piece. If he returns to form, Detroit may finally have the goaltending they've lacked for years. If not, the playoff drought could hit a full decade.Power play success masked penalty kill disaster. Detroit ranked 4th in PP% last year—but dead last (32nd) in PK%, and had just 2 shorthanded goals.Yzerman's offseason was conservative. Outside of the Gibson trade, additions like James van Riemsdyk, Mason Appleton, and Travis Hamonic won't move the needle significantly.Detroit's window is tightening. With the East getting deeper (Montreal, Ottawa, Columbus, Buffalo all fighting), the margin for error is razor thin.Offensive leaders like Dylan Larkin, DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond, and Patrick Kane must stay healthy—this team can't afford to lose top-end scoring.FINAL VERDICT:Detroit made one major move this offseason—and if John Gibson plays like the All-Star he once was, it could be a franchise-defining deal. But with penalty-kill woes, aging secondary scoring, and intense wild card competition, the Red Wings remain a bubble team in a crowded East.Is year 10 of the rebuild the one that finally breaks the curse—or does the streak stretch into double digits?RESOURCE LINKS:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgBj1LV0-DMfBhcRPSJZLjAX (Twitter): https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@nhlwraparoundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61555451139787HASHTAGS:#DetroitRedWings #NHLWraparound #SummerCoolers #JohnGibson #PetrMrazek #JamesvanRiemsdyk #MasonAppleton #WilliamLagesson #AlbertJohansson #JonatanBerggren #ElmerSoderblom #SteveYzerman #VladimirTarasenko #AlexLyon #PatVerbeek #LucasRaymond #AlexDebrincat #DylanLarkin

(00:00) We then jump back to hockey by discussing whether the fears of injury or wear & tear for Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Patrick Kane, and the rest of the Hockeytown Olympic hopefuls are overblown or a legitimate concern. Will Todd McLellan's squad hold tough, or will another bout of injuries leave the scoring to the like of Alex DeBrincat, Simon Edvinsson, Marco Kasper, and the rest of the Red Wings? (7:15) Next, we compare where Steve Yzerman's Detroit Red Wings are relative to Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens, Tkachuk, Stutzle and the Ottawa Senators, and Dahlin's Buffalo Sabres. What does Steve Yzerman need to do to match the talent levels of Demidov & Co., or are Danielson, Sandin Pellikka, Brandsegg-Nygard, & the rest of the Red Wings pipeline more than enough? Chapters   Chapter 1: The Honourable Mentions (00:00) Mark and Justin set the stage for their final positional ranking, acknowledging it was a difficult list to create. They kick things off by discussing the players who just missed the cut for their top 25. Justin's "Just Missed" List: Claude Giroux, Brock Boeser (too inconsistent), and Bryan Rust. Mark's "Just Missed" List: Patrick Kane (ranked #26), Matthew Coronato, Conor Garland, and Timo Meier.   Chapter 2: Kicking Off the Countdown: #25-22 (04:08) The countdown officially begins. The hosts reveal the first four names on their respective lists, featuring a mix of consistent veterans and promising young talent. Justin's Picks: #25 Troy Terry, #24 Drake Batherson, #23 Patrick Kane, #22 Gabe Vilardi. Mark's Picks: #25 Bryan Rust, #24 Alex Tuch, #23 Ricard Raquel, #22 Drake Batherson.   Chapter 3: Climbing the Ranks: #21-18 (11:37)   The first major disagreement of the episode emerges as the guys debate the true ranking of a Columbus Blue Jackets sniper. The Kirill Marchenko Debate: Justin has Marchenko at #21, expressing hesitation due to his one breakout year. Mark has him much higher at #13, citing his elite even-strength goal-scoring and consistent improvement. Justin's Other Picks: #20 Seth Jarvis, #19 Alex Tuch, #18 Martin Necas. Mark's Other Picks: #21 Valeri Nichushkin, #20 Andrei Svechnikov, #19 Seth Jarvis, #18 Martin Necas.   Chapter 4: The Middle of the Pack: #17-15 (22:01)   Mark and Justin find common ground in the mid-tier, agreeing on three players in the exact same order, including a dynamic duo from the Utah Mammoth. #17 Travis Konecny: The hosts agree on his ranking, praising his two-way game and role in Philadelphia. The Utah Duo: Both Mark and Justin have #16 Dylan Guenther and #15 JJ Peterka, discussing how their defensive development will be key to Utah's playoff hopes.   Chapter 5: High Ceilings & Top-10 Potential: #14-12 (28:19)   The debates heat up as the hosts discuss players on the cusp of the top 10, including a Canadiens star with 50-goal potential and a uniquely physical Capitals forward. Jordan Kyrou: Justin places him at #12, while Mark has him at #14. The Cole Caufield Debate: Justin is hesitant, placing him at #13. Mark has him in his top 10, seeing him as a future 50-goal scorer. Other players discussed: Tom Wilson (Justin #14) and Adrian Kempe (Mark #12).   Chapter 6: Cracking the Top 10: #11-9 (34:33)   The lists diverge significantly as the hosts make their cases for who belongs in the elite top 10. Mark Stone: Justin has the Vegas captain at #11 due to injuries. Mark places him higher at #8, calling him a "contender-making" player even if he only plays 55 games. Tom Wilson: Mark makes a passionate case for Wilson in his top 10 at #9 due to his one-of-a-kind impact. Lucas Raymond: In a surprise pick, Justin places the Red Wings forward at #9, projecting a near 100-point season and praising his defensive growth.   Chapter 7: The Elite Tier: #8-4 (41:26)   The hosts discuss the same group of elite players but shuffle the order based on playoff performance versus regular-season dominance. William Nylander: Both agree on him at #7. The Marner vs. Rantanen vs. Reinhart Debate: Mark's Order: #6 Mitch Marner, #5 Sam Reinhart, #4 Mikko Rantanen. He knocks Marner for his playoff struggles. Justin's Order: #6 Sam Reinhart, #5 Mikko Rantanen, #4 Mitch Marner. He argues Marner's elite two-way game places him higher.   Chapter 8: The Unquestionable Top 3 & Final Thoughts (50:15)   Mark and Justin align perfectly for the pinnacle of the right winger position, crowning the undisputed king and wrapping up the series. #3: David Pastrnak #2: Matthew Tkachuk #1: Nikita Kucherov

Send us a textThe remarkable story of Detroit's 1935 "City of Champions" status stands as perhaps the greatest untold achievement in American sports history. When the Lions captured the NFL championship, the Tigers claimed the World Series, and the Red Wings hoisted Lord Stanley's Cup all in the same year – while Joe Louis began his meteoric rise to boxing dominance – Detroit experienced a perfect storm of athletic excellence that has never been matched. In this episode, co-host Charles Avison shares his passionate 15-year quest to bring this forgotten legacy back into public consciousness. What began as research for a book became a mission that faced unexpected resistance from mainstream media and publishers. Rather than accepting defeat, Charles pivoted to grassroots efforts – selling books at art fairs and eventually creating Inspire Marketplace, a Made in Michigan gift shop that now supports over 110 local artists while serving as a platform for the City of Champions story. The conversation takes fascinating detours through Detroit's latest ventures, including the new Ice Cube 3-on-3 basketball team, while also exploring university archives that reveal connections between Detroit's sporting triumphs and broader historical figures. We discover Arthur Miller's student journalism about Black athlete Willis Ward and the complex decisions faced by athletes regarding the 1936 Berlin Olympics – threading Detroit's championships into the fabric of American cultural history.Beyond sports statistics, this episode illuminates the perseverance required to preserve history that might otherwise slip away. Charles' journey parallels the championship teams he chronicles – facing setbacks, adjusting strategies, and refusing to concede defeat. As Inspire Marketplace expands to new locations including Detroit's airport and potentially downtown near the stadiums, the mission to celebrate Detroit's unprecedented championship year gains momentum.Join us as we reconnect with Detroit's sporting legacy and the determination required to keep remarkable stories alive for future generations. Whether you're a sports enthusiast, history buff, or appreciate tales of persistence against the odds, this episode offers a compelling glimpse into a magical moment when Detroit truly became the City of Champions.https://linktr.ee/DetroitCityofChampionswww.DJJamieDetroit.comwww.WearingFunny.com
