When it comes to branding and discoverability DP shares: Imposter syndrome can be a good thing and can keep you honest about your deliverables False modesty will limit your discoverability, it's your job to tell people about the value you offer Everyone is a unique combination of expert and amateur Be the scalpel and not the Swiss Army knife. It's the difference of being a purpose-built tool to do one thing versus an average jack of all trades…and scalpels get paid better. STEP OUT OF THE SHADOWS,AND INTO YOUR OWN PERSONAL BRANDWhat would it look like if you were to own who you truly are at a radical and completely Non-Fiction level? How good would it feel to finally give yourself full permission to embrace who are and shape your brand entirely around what makes you tick instead of modifying yourself to best capture a slice of what's "selling" best? Do you want to experience and enjoy but a mere sliver of the benefit and value you are to the world......??...Or are you someone who is now willing to turn your complete focus and energy away from the ineffective action of modifying for others, and shift it rather towards aligning with your personal values that will shape a personal brand that you can be truly proud of? TOO MANY PEOPLE FOR TOO MANY YEARS HAVE LABOURED IN OBSCURITYWhy? Because that's the way it's always been.Work for someone else.Let them profit off your labor. And remain nameless, letting others take credit for your hard work. How can you use imposter syndrome as inspiration when creating a personal brand? Let imposter syndrome guide you to be disciplined in differentiating yourself as a personal brand. Share how you are unique in what you do and how you do it by creating your key three. Creating a personal brand is about differentiating yourself, and not letting imposter syndrome hold you back from being visible as the expert you are. What is personal branding? Personal branding is differentiating yourself from all others in your area of expertise. The second job of personal branding is demonstrating who you are, what you do, and how you do it. What is imposter syndrome and what does it have to do with creating a personal brand? According to the dictionary, imposter syndrome is the persistent inability to believe that your success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of your own efforts, skills, or abilities. Many times, entrepreneurs see what others in their space are doing and feel intimidated. Likewise, they may think that because someone else is already doing something, there won't be enough clients for everyone. Similarly, people often feel that because someone has been doing something longer, they won't be as good or don't have the right skills. These feelings result in fear and anxiety, which ultimately lead to procrastination. Procrastination is inaction, equating to goals not being met and success not being achieved. However, if you truly differentiate yourself people will see you as the person that is meant to help them. What makes you you is what makes people want to hire you. Likewise, what makes you you is what gives you the expertise to serve the way you want to serve. Personal branding is about showing the world what makes you unique, you being you. Your experience, your story, and your voice make you, you. That is what personal branding is all about, owning what makes you unique and demonstrating that where you can. Amplify your voice to differentiate yourself and stand out when creating a personal brand If you do not use your voice to differentiate yourself, you won't become known. Our voice, our appearance, our fashion, everything about us helps differentiate us from others in our area of expertise, whether local or online. Being a guest on a podcast is a great way to be present and have the masses hear your message. Share what you've learned to help others Take the hard work you did for decades, and share it far and wide. Don't sit on your knowledge, share it. Imposter Syndrome and how to use it for creating a personal brand Even if you don't have a degree, you can learn a skill, you have gifts, and you have had experiences that have taught you so that now you can help and serve other people. Often times people who don't have a degree in something, feel that they shouldn't be doing something because they don't have as much knowledge, but that is not true. If negative imposter syndrome is holding you back, it's important to recognize the skills and gifts you have that you can now use to serve others. DP emphasized that titles behind the name, don't help differentiate you as a brand. Being one of one is key. There are a lot of careers where you are one of many, you aren't standing out if you are one of many. Learn more about Neil deGrasse Tyson. Neil is a great example of a personal brand. Watch the video of Neil explaining the anatomy of the sound byte. Share your level of expertise to differentiate yourself If you want to stand out, you have to share your expertise. People will not find you if you are not sharing what you know and educating people on how you are unique and what you can do. Share your skills instead of being afraid and hiding your expertise. How can you create a quick message that differentiates you? You have a very limited time to capture the attention of others and differentiate yourself. The positive side of imposter syndrome Imposter syndrome is a powerful tool to make you better. It can make you more diligent in double and triple check what you create and share. DP suggested that we stop calling imposter syndrome imposter syndrome and call it diligence, discipline, and rigor. Being diligent, disciplined, and rigorous will help you dive deeper into what you are doing to make it more valuable for people. Think of imposter syndrome as an opportunity to push yourself into being the absolute best at what you do. DP shared that women need to embrace the fact that women run the world. Women have so much power and potential to change the next generation of the earth. Realize that you don't have to have the light shining on you 24/7 but you stand out, speak up, and have an impact. Own what is yours to own, your voice, your experiences, and the expertise you have earned, and be willing to share it with anyone. No one can call you an imposter based on your own experience. Differentiate wants from needs. Knowing what others want and need from you is another way to differentiate yourself. Often times people want to unload their problems and they simply need you to recognize the need. As you differentiate yourself by sharing that you understand the need will make you stand out. The Key Three™ of personal branding Create three concepts, words, or phrases that consistently, and concisely define exactly what you do and how you do it that you can constantly demonstrate in what you do. These will be words or phrases that people will appreciate and you will demonstrate in everything that you do. DP used himself as an example. His key three are creative, collaborative, and provocative. Robyn's key three are strategic, creative, and empathetic. DP and Robyn do very similar work, yet they are very different. We can be in the same realm of work but be very unique and attract completely different audiences. Don't let imposter syndrome hold you back from creating your personal brand, instead use it to your advantage to be disciplined with demonstrating how unique you are in your area of expertise. What is a non-fiction brand? It is a brand that is true and authentic in its reflection of a company. To build your non-fiction brand, my guest DP Knudten you need to start with a hard look in the mirror. As a business owner you need to go beyond the surface to discover exactly who you are, what you do, and how you do it. Those three things right there which comprise your brand proposition are absolutely fundamental because that's what makes you different than someone who does the exact same thing across the street. We jump into a discussion about repetition as key to your brand success. However, the next topic of style stages is just as critical. Then, we touch on several nuggets and suggestions to wrap up our interview with DP. He provides a few challenges and valuable insight to leave you with plenty of food for thought. Style Stages A key concept for this episode is the idea of style stages. There are numerous (maybe countless) social media platforms available today. We should take advantage of many of those, if possible. On the other hand, some provide a better stage for our presentation content and style than others. These style stages vary from written form to audio to long or short-form videos. Therefore, we have a range of options to embrace and find what works best for us. For example, if you have a face for radio, then go the audio route. When your content makes more sense, and you are comfortable writing, then use those tools. Building The Connection We should balance our comfort zone with how these style stages impact the audience. DP provides a quote about how people interact as blog readers, video viewers, or audio listeners. These are important to consider. Where possible, audio is one of the best formats as it builds a personal connection due to being in the listener's head. A Little Background DP's worked on some of the biggest brands in the business, including Coca-Cola®, The Athlete's Foot®, and ClosetMaid®, during tenures at DDB Needham (Chicago), McCann Erickson (Atlanta), and creative shops in Denver, Sarasota, and Madison, WI. He is the author of "NONFICTION BRAND—Discover, craft and communicate the ‘completely true / completely you' brand you already are," and co-author of "ROTOMA—The ROI of Social Media 'Top of Mind'" and the creator-host of the popular podcasts, The ROTOMA Podcast and NONFICTION BRAND. He is also a keynote speaker and clinician in branding, social media, creativity, and culture for groups throughout the United States. Contacting DP You can learn from DP directly or as a student of his experience. First, DP has a podcast called Non-Fictions Brands. I highly recommend you give it a listen. This episode starts right away with a continuation of the niche brands discussion. We then move to DP's thoughts on social media and using those tools. He even moves into examples of live-streaming and ways to use these tools no matter your strengths. Niche Brands - Livestream Anything DP dropped a couple of examples that are highly niche right out of the gate. First, he talks about Trezy, who uses twitch to lifestream software coding. Then he shifts right into mentioning he live-streamed writing his book. How can you get more niche than that? However, these have followers and are ways to build a community. These tools can build relationships in ways marketing never used to be able to touch. Even a podcast interview can build a relationship among the participants. Influencers All of that brings us into a discussion of influencers and personal brands. The people that like to label themselves an "influencer" are not highly praised by DP. However, he does point out that all of us are influencers. The niche of our audience may be small. Nevertheless, we bring influence to those people, which could potentially be highly valuable to some sellers. We should never underestimate what we can do for others. We dig into the ways to build a non-fiction brand in episode two. The focus is on brand first principles and sticking to truth in building upon it. DP starts with his "a-ha" moment that took years to develop. Then he weaves a series of points to help us build a brand, personal or otherwise. Write Some Stuff The non-fiction idea started with a simple statement, "write some stuff." He was working on advertising content and had only those instructions. That caused him to halt and note that he is not a fiction writer. His advertising process required facts and truth so he could present them. It was not sufficient to simply make up a story for a product or brand. Brand First Principles DP highlights his personal brand first principles and gives us a foundation for ours. We need to stick to our first principles and build on those. That is the case whether you are building a brand or selling a product (including your resume). These are the traits that make you special or unique. They are your strengths and should be the basis of your value to customers. However, you might want to review what you want to be as well as your strengths. The goal might be to pick up diamonds instead of potatoes. We continue our interviews with the first part of our discussion with the author of nonfiction brands - DP Knudten. His book sparked my interest, and now we get to sit down and talk to him. We cover a lot about brands, both personal and corporate. Thus, you will have a better grasp of these concepts after listening to him. NonFiction Brands - Sell To The Right Audience A common misconception of advertisers is that they sell items to people that do not need them. Contrary to that, DP focuses on nonfiction brands as a path to get the audience that wants your product. The key point is that we will build better relationships with customers when we have what they need. That also makes the sale much easier. They need our product. Therefore, we need to point out how it meets their needs. Advertising becomes almost responsive instead of proactive and in your face. Brands And Emotions There is always an emotional appeal in the best marketing. It is one thing to sell features, but another to sell how they make the buyer feel. Think of the opposite of buyer's remorse. A brand predicts a pleasant experience and post-sale feeling for the buyer. Likewise, a personal connection in the sales process will help provide a warmer experience than a cold corporate approach.
