First Liberty Briefing
Drew Brees and the Importance of Religious Freedom in School and Work

First Liberty Briefing

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2019 1:38

When Drew Brees, the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback, endorsed “Bring Your Bible to School Day,” he received a lot of criticism from the “woke” culture. Nonetheless, the Constitution protects Brees’ freedom of speech as well as the right of students to read their Bibles at school. Building on these principles, First Liberty has successfully defended individuals maligned for expressing their faith in the academic and professional spheres. Learn more at FirstLiberty.org/Briefing. Drew Brees is not only a Super Bowl winning quarterback, he’s been an outspoken advocate for several issues dear to his heart.  That includes his faith. But when he cut a public service announcement for a project by Focus on the Family called, “Bring Your Bible to School Day,” the woke, cancel culture whipped itself into the usual frenzy. The whole situation made me think of a few of our past clients. For instance, officials in Georgia removed Dr. Eric Walsh from being a public health official over something he said in a sermon as a lay minister.  Giovanni Rubeo, just 12 years old at the time, was told he could not read his Bible during free reading time at school.  Drew Brees probably won’t lose his job like Dr. Walsh did, but I worry about kids who actually do bring their Bible to school, like Giovanni did.  While the law is crystal clear that students have every right to carry, read, and reference their Bible at school, we all brace for the next student who runs up against the teacher who doesn’t think the student should have the freedom to do so. All of us ought to appreciate Drew Brees for what makes him different from us, even if that is his religion. That’s what our commitment to religious liberty and the guarantee to exercise that religion in public demands. By the way, in case you’re wondering, we won Dr. Walsh’s case and, after several exchanges with Giovanni’s school, they admitted their teacher made a mistake.  So, don’t be afraid of living out your faith in public either.  We’re here to help. To learn how First Liberty is protecting religious liberty for all Americans, visit FirstLiberty.org.

Kustron hopes none of the listeners placed any Weekly Picks or playoff brackets based on the podcast crew's predictions last week. Kittelberger played like dogsh!t after 5 days laid up on a beach drinking daiquiris. And Schwartz calls out Rubeo for pulling the chute last minute on beer league, leaving the squad with 7 skaters - one of which was drunk, the other shit themselves, literally. ICYMI: Minnesota Duluth won another NCAA title. The New Jersey Devils won the draft lottery confirming Taylor Hall as a lucky charm. Quenneville signed with Florida, Vigneault joins Philly, and LA hires McLellan. Out EAST: No one saw the Blue Jackets sweeping Tampa... or Kucherov getting suspended for a headshot. The Bruins-Maple Leafs series is living up to the hype. And the Capitals-Hurricanes series has been a battle, including Ovi's KO. And the Islanders didn't give the Pens or the podcast crew much to hope for. Out WEST: The Stars and Predators are tied at 2 wins apiece - Stars rookie Heiskanen continues to shine. The Jets-Blues series hasn't seen a home team win yet, wtf?! The Avalanche are giving the Flames everything they can handle, including Cale Makar's first career goal in his NHL debut. And the Golden Knights-Sharks series has been nonstop between the off-ice banter, fights, and none of the Sharks stopping the Stone-Pacioretty-Stastny line. ICYMI: Kane & DeBrincat are the 2nd American duo to record 40+ goals in a season. Calgary has five 70-point scorers, the first team since the 2000-2001 Penguins. McDavid and Draisaitl hit 100 points. Greg Pateryn breaks his 130-game goalless streak. Ovechkin hits 50. And of the non-playoff bound teams, the podcast crew picks their favorites to rebound and make the playoffs next year. Justin Williams said there would be no more Storm Surge celebrations, and then there was another?! Valeri Nichuskin is an empty jersey. Paul Byron abides by "the code" and fights MacKenzie Weegar. The NCAA frozen four is almost set. Dubnyk rushes to the bench for a 6th skater when his net is hit off the pegs. Brunner celebrates by hurdling the net. Ryan Reaves roughs up his coaches prior to every game. And the HPC Instagram following and Kitts help a new goalie in need of some tips. All before Weekly Picks and Top Shelf Trivia.

Kitts, Schwartz, and Rubeo celebrate last week's beer league W after their prior shellacking. Jumbo Joe Thornton tied Selanne for points and passed Gordie Howe for most career assists - what a legend?! Pastrnak required thumb surgery after falling leaving a "team sponsorship dinner."
