New polling shows that, in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting, the Texas gubernatorial race has tightened between Gov. Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke. Kaitlin Armstrong, on the run now for over a month in connection with the shooting death of pro cyclist Anna Moria Wilson, may be going by her sister Christine Armstrong's name in New York - she also may have fled to Canada. Austin Police are searching for 11 year old Eimi Estrada, who has been missing since Monday and was last seen in the North Plaza/Rundberg area of North Austin. A 17-year-old with an extensive criminal record was shot by a man he was trying to rob in a Domain parking lot on Tuesday. Austin is rated highly among "equity-rich" metros - meaning that relatively few Austin homeowners owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth. Texas and Oklahoma, said to be departing the Big 12 for the SEC by 2025, have reportedly moved that goal up a year to 2024. Singer Zac Collier, a Texas A&M alum, has been cut from a National Anthem performance at the College World Series after being seen flashing the anti-UT "horns down" hand sign at the Women's College World Series, in which Texas Softball was a competitor. Weekend live music: Friday shows include Pride At Swan Dive with Sabrina Ellis and more, Tameca Jones in what she bills as her "last public performance" at Antone's, Viben and the Submersibles at the Mohawk, Broncho at Empire Control Room, and Casey Donahew at the Haute Spot. Saturday sees The Crystal Method at The Venue ATX, Ty Segall at the Mohawk, Slaid Cleaves at The 04 Center, and Crystal Gayle at the Haute Spot. Sunday, the Stay Black And Live music festival day features Ivy Rootz, Charmin Greene, Mama Duke, WC Clark and tons more at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. Austin weather: we snapped a streak of consecutive triple-digit days that lasted over a week on Wednesday, but we're back at it today with a high of 101 expected, and similar and likely longer streaks of 100+ heat are likely coming throughout the summer.

Very excited to share this week's episode and our interview with Sean Tillmann (aka Har Mar Superstar). What's the best way to best describe Mr Tillman? Songwriter, singer, showman, actor?? As far as we can tell Mr Tillman is a stone cold entertainer. Mr Tillmann has recorded 6 solo albums and earlier this year released the debut of his new band, Heart Bones, a collaboration with Sabrina Ellis. His over the top and occasionally scantily clad live performances have seen him touring with The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Afghan Whigs, and Lizzo. Oh, and did we mention he famously squared off against Ben Stiller in that hilarious dance off scene in the remake of 'Starsky & Hutch'? That's right, he's an entertainer. We caught up with Mr Tillmann from his home in Minneapolis. In our standard fashion the convo was wide ranging and revealing. Topics discussed: coming up in the early 2000s, playing the UCLA quad after staying up all night watching Law & Order, overcoming personal obstacles and learning from prior mistakes, working with Cult Records, being on tour when the country went into lockdown, raising funds for local music venues, donating supplies to the local Minneapolis community in wake of social unrest, not being complacent and importance of voting, attaining a fresh perspective on life and just learning to keep on keepin' on. It gets a little self help-y but we promise it's all worth the listen :)Above all Mr Tillmann is a proper dude. We thank him for coming on the pod and loved hearing about his journey. PS. Thank you to the unofficial sponsor of this week's episode, Alka Seltzer! We're a major of fan of your tropical punch flavored candy medicine!
On today's episode I talk to musician Sabrina Ellis. Originally from Houston, Sabrina has been a mainstay of Austin indie rock for years. In 2008, they formed the indie rock band A Giant Dog, and since then, the band has released five albums, including a full-length cover of Arcade Fire's Neon Bible. Sabrina also co-founded the bands Heart Bones, with Har Mar Superstar, and Sweet Spirit. Sweet Spirit have released three albums, and their latest, Trinidad, was just released on Merge a few months ago. And it's fantastic! Most musicians wait a lifetime for the chance to be part of one outstanding project. Sabrina Ellis is currently in three of them. The front person of A Giant Dog and Sweet Spirit recently added another project to their already-impressive arsenal. Along with Har Mar Superstar mastermind (and Episode 19 guest) Sean Tillmann, Ellis embarked on a new artistic endeavor called Heart Bones. After a successful tour in which they performed the music of Dirty Dancing, the dynamic duo set out to write and record an album of their own. Last month, Heart Bones released its debut album, Hot Dish, and set out on a lengthy U.S. tour. Before kicking off that run of shows with a performance at The Cooperage last weekend, My First Band host Tyler Maas joined Ellis for a pre-show discussion about the new record, their other projects and everything that came before. Over the course of an hour-long Airbnb interview, Ellis talked about fronting a high school cover band in the suburbs of Houston, finding a place in adolescence at punk shows at a Christian coffee shop, going to NYU with intentions of becoming a playwright and coming back to Texas to join up with former bandmates in Austin and start A Giant Dog. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Heart Bones ("This Time It's Different").

With notorious ferocity and powerful hooks, Sabrina Ellis and Andrew Cashen's newest musical project, Sweet Spirit, has quickly garnered critical praise and captivated the Austin music scene.
In an unintentional tribute to the classic play Waiting for Godot, our hosts spend much of the episode waiting for the guest -- Sabrina Ellis of the bands A Giant Dog and Sweet Spirit -- to show up! But it all fits the vibe of the episode, we promise, as we dig into the mysteries of 2001's DONNIE DARKO. What does it all mean? Is this just a JACOB'S LADDER scenario or are we in a tangent universe? Is Jake Gyllenhaal one of our greatest actors? Did any other good movies come out in 2001? At what point will Sabrina arrive? Why does Ed's mic sound pretty bad? The answer to these questions and more on the new episode of Archers of Horror! As always the BLOOD RAGE theme cover is by Matt Akers. Check out his bandcamp!
In the first episode of Give Us a Good One, Mike and Orville talk to musician Sabrina Ellis (A Giant Dog, Sweet Spirit) about a family reunion bathroom mishap in Mexico, and the practice of stealing tiny forks. The episode opens with a never before heard TV show theme Sabrina wrote for a never-made teen drama about Jonbenet Ramsey.

It's plain to hear that Sweet Spirit has a big sound: The Austin, Texas, rock band has nine members and one of the most energetic frontwomen in indie music. That's Sabrina Ellis, who also sings for A Giant Dog. Sweet Spirit last month released the new album "St. Mojo." Six of the band members stopped into the CPR Performance Studio before a gig at Denver's Hi-Dive to perform four songs from the new LP. They also spoke with Scott Carney about their non-stop touring schedule and their friendship with fellow Austin band Spoon.
