Mazda CX-70 five-seat all-wheel-drive SUV - impressive interior quality.Mazda now has a very comprehensive range of large SUV’s – I’m driving the CX-70 introduced late last year, and basically, a five-seat version of the large seven-seat CX-90, it comes in six-cylinder turbo petrol or turbo diesel with mild hybridassistance, in two all-wheel drive grades, the GT or the Azami. The 3.3-litreturbodiesel CX-70 D50E GT at $77,970 plus on-road costs really impressed mesomewhat of a surprise given I didn’t like the CX-90 model I drove early last yearwith its underdone and somewhat hard riding suspension. Mazda Australiasubsequently retuned the suspension and the CX-70 also reflects that update. The ride perhaps still a little hard however the GT model is a rather sporty largeSUV fitted with 21-inch alloy wheels and is very competent in the way it handles. Not inexpensive like all the large Mazda SUV’s and their latest pricing has pushedwell into prestige territory. Having said that they are very highly equipped. TheCX-70 GT gaining dual 12.3-inch interior screens, heated leather seats, adaptiveLED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and a full suite of advanced safetytechnology. The interior very well sorted with a quality feel with seat comfort verymuch a high point. Warranty, five years/unlimited km. I’m David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mazda now has a very comprehensive range of SUV’s – in addition to its best-selling mid-sized CX-5 it now offers four large SUV’s, the CX-60, CX-70, CX-80 andCX-90 – and one wonders if the four large SUV’s are overkill, the company first toadmit there is some overlap with buyers – The CX-80 IS basically a three-rowversion of the CX-60, available with three engine choices - an in-line six-cylinderpetrol or diesel or a four-cylinder plug in hybrid. There’s four available grades,Pure, Touring, GT and Azami, the entry Pure only gets the six-cylinder petrolengine while all models feature all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic withmanual shift paddles. Importantly, the six-cylinder versions also include a 48-voltmild hybrid system. I drove the entry Mazda CX-80 Pure starting at $54,950 pluson-roads which gets 18-inch alloys, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ahead up display, black cloth trim, manual seat adjustment, three-zone climatecontrol air, a semi-digital instrument cluster, three drive modes and a full suite ofsafety equipment. Disappointingly, it lacks a wireless phone charger, a powertailgate, and a spare wheel – just a tyre repair kit inadequate in my view for afamily carrier with all-wheel-drive. Drive detail next. Sahba Azami was born an Afghan refugee.Today, she's an Afghan refugee once more. But, for nearly 20 years, she was not a refugee. She was simply an Afghan. And the future was bright.Brought back to the country of her parents' birth after the United States toppled the Taliban, Sahba joined a vanguard of young women who were going to make the most of the precious opportunity that had been denied every generation of Afghan women before them -- She pursued an education.Sahba graduated college. She graduated law school. She joined the Afghan president's administration. She was building a new country. But then the Taliban returned. It's an odd thing to realize: Sahba's life has almost certainly been more dramatically changed and changed again by the decisions of American presidents than my own, but it's a realization I can't shake. The decision of American presidents made it possible for Sahba to return to Afghanistan and pursue an education. The decisions of American presidents contributed to Afghanistan's collapse, separating her from her family, and making her a refugee in a faraway land. But still, she dreams.Today, she shares her story.Support the show

Abbasid History Podcast

Thomas Bauer's "A Culture of Ambiguity" stands out as one of the most important contributions to Islamic Studies in recent decades. First published in German in 2011, it wasn't until 2021 that it became available in English. Bauer's three decades of knowledge and expertise shine through in the work, which earned him the  Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award in Germany. It is rare for an academic book rich in insights for specialists to also be engaging enough for general readers, yet this is exactly what Bauer has achieved. However our guest today has an essay published in the Maydan journal online journal interogating Bauer's conceptualisation of "ambiguity" and its application in the history of islamic culture. Faheem A. Hussain is an independent researcher. He has a BA (Hons.) in Arabic and Islamic studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, a PGCE in Religious Studies from Roehampton University, and an MA in philosophy from Heythrop College, University of London. His writings can be found at https://faheemahussain.substack.com/ and https://x.com/FaheemAMHussain. Faheem's article: https://themaydan.com/2024/08/ambiguity-as-a-master-key-critically-reading-thomas-bauers-culture-of-ambiguity/ https://x.com/FaheemAMHussain/status/1772736085627457970 Timestamps 02:11 You say in your essay:  Now this does not pretend to be anything but a critical review of Bauer, interrogating his ideas of ambiguity, its coherence and implications, and despite my best efforts in civility, there's no hiding my polemical intent. Even so, I wish to insist that this book is a product of a fine mind and generous soul, and that I have no doubt that if anyone reads the book, they will only leave more humbled, indebted as well as greatly enriched by reading it. Without a doubt, this is a book that should be read as well as kept on a shelf. Before we start why don't you give us an overview of the book and what he liked best about it. 16:23 At the heart of Bauer's work is this concept of Ambiguity. Tell us what he means by this and your reservations. 37:52 For me, my favourite parts were on the divergent readings of the Quran and the difference between the comfort of medieval scholars about that, particularly Ibn al-Jazari and the anxiety of modern Muslims. Though at first blush the late Saudi-Salafi cleric, Sheikh Ibn al-ʿUthaymin and the Pakistani activist al-Mawdudi, God be kind to their souls, might seem apart yet they share the same modern anxiety about ambiguity according to Bauer. It seems you are more on board with him on this then his other applications of ambiguity in the cultural history of Islam. 49:25 Like you, I wasn't convinced by his thoughts on the concept of foreigness in Islamic cultural history. You also take him to task on his take on homoerotica. I also feel that with current debate about gender and the like whether it makes sense to say there is a lack of ambiguity in contemporary culture. I feel if we had experts on medieval, early modern and modern Europe as Bauer is an expert on medieval Arabic whether we would have better insights on ambiguity as a concept. 01:03:52 And finally before we end tell us where listeners can turn next to learn more about today's topic and what are other current projects that listeners can anticipate? Works mentioned in episode: Pieter Coppens, Did Modernity End Polyvalence? iki dönümlük toprakta buğday yetiştiriyorsunuz. Tohum-emek-coğrafya-toprağın verimi-su-gübre (organik)-güneş vb. şartları içinde bire on, yahut çok çalışarak bire elli verim alıyorsunuz. Azami miktar budur. Eski tabir ile hadd-i azami. Bundan daha iyisi olabilir mi? Olur. Bilim buna “tabiat kanunu” diyor. Her varlık buna kayıtsız-şartsız uyar. Tek istisna insandır. İnsan kul da olabilir, asi de. İmtihana tabi olan odur. Had kelimesi (çoğulu: hudut) sözlükte 1. Sınır, kenar, uç. 2. Miktar derece. 3. Kıymet, değer. 4.

Usaama al-Azami's Islam and the Arab Revolutions: The Ulama Between Democracy and Autocracy (Oxford UP, 2022) focuses on the responses of several prominent Muslim religious scholars towards the 2011 Arab popular revolts, particularly in Egypt, that toppled long-standing autocratic leaders. It also looks at their reaction to the subsequent military coup in 2013 that overthrw Egypt's first and only democratically elected leader and led to the brutal and bloody repression of anti-coup protests. However, the book's significance goes far beyond the events surrounding the Egyptian revolt by discussing the relationship between the Muslim clergy and the state and the theology and jurisprudence that is central not only to the revolts but to the competition between major Middle Eastern and Asian Muslim-majority states in defining what constitutes Islam, and particularly moderate Islam, in an era of geopolitical transition. Al-Azami's narrative juxtaposes the pro-revolt legal opinions of the Qatar-backed cleric, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, widely viewed as one of Islam's most prominent living scholars, and those of two Egyptian scholars beholden to the Egyptian state as well as two scholars who are backed by and reflect the United Arab Emirates' militant advocacy of autocracy. In laying bare the issues that divide the scholars, the book shines a spotlight on two of the foremost fault lines that underlie their differences: the relationship between the ruler and the ruled and how to prevent anarchy and chaos. Qaradawi rejects the principle supported by counterrevolutionary scholars of Muslims owing absolute obedience to their ruler and defends their right to oppose and peacefully resist unjust rule. Similarly, Qaradawi argues that greater transparency and accountability prevents anarchy and chaos while counterrevolutionaries believe that only strengthened autocracy can maintain order. By laying out these different positions in great documented detail, Al-Azami ‘s book makes an important contribution to an understanding of debates among scholars in which in his words counterrevolutionaries have for now the political upper hand whilst more reform-minded clerics retain the discursive high ground. Dr Michael Willis (St Antony's College) is chairing the webinar. The live webinar took place on 21st January 2022 as part of the Middle East Centre webinar series. The book is available for purchase in the UK from Hurst Publishers, quote the discount code ISLAMARAB35 at check-out for 35% discount; and to purchase outside the UK, from Oxford University Press, quote ADISTA5 for your discount. This video is also available with accessibility features as a podcast at http://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/series/middle-east-centre The Arab revolutions of 2011 were a transformative moment in the modern history of the Middle East, as people rose up against long-standing autocrats throughout the region to call for ‘bread, freedom and dignity'. With the passage of time, results have been decidedly mixed, with abortive success stories like Tunisia contrasting with the emergence of even more repressive dictatorships in places like Egypt, with the backing of several Gulf states. Focusing primarily on Egypt, this book considers a relatively understudied dimension of these revolutions: the role of prominent religious scholars. While pro-revolutionary ulama have justified activism against authoritarian regimes, counter-revolutionary scholars have provided religious backing for repression, and in some cases the mass murder of unarmed protestors. Usaama al-Azami traces the public engagements and religious pronouncements of several prominent ulama in the region, including Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Ali Gomaa and Abdallah bin Bayyah, to explore their role in either championing the Arab revolutions or supporting their repression. He concludes that while a minority of noted scholars have enthusiastically endorsed the counter-revolutions, their approach is attributable less to premodern theology and more to their distinctly modern commitment to the authoritarian state. Biographies Dr Usaama al-Azami read his BA in Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford, and his MA and PhD in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. Alongside his university career, he also pursued Islamic studies in seminarial settings in which he has also subsequently taught. He has travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, living for five years in the region. He is also an enthusiastic teacher who is very eager to support the formation of research scholars, and always welcomes students with such aspirations to get in touch with him. Usaama al-Azami is primarily interested in the interaction between Islam and modernity with a special interest in modern developments in Islamic political philosophy. His first book, Islam and the Arab Revolutions looks at the way in which influential Islamic scholars responded to the Arab uprisings of 2011 through 2013. His PhD, which is a separate project which he hopes to develop into a monograph in the near future, is entitled "Modern Islamic Political Thought: Islamism in the Arab World from the Late Twentieth to the Early Twenty-first Centuries". In it, he explores how Arab ulama of a mainstream "Islamist" orientation have engaged Western political concepts such as democracy, secularism and the nation-state, selectively adapting and assimilating aspects of these ideas into their understanding of Islam. His broader interests extend to a range of disciplines from the Islamic scholarly tradition from the earliest period of Islam down to the present. Dr Michael J. Willis is Director of the Middle East Centre at St Antony's College, University of Oxford and King Mohammed VI Fellow in Moroccan and Mediterranean Studies. His research interests focus on the politics, modern history and international relations of the central Maghreb states (Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco). He is the author of Politics and Power in the Maghreb: Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco from Independence to the Arab Spring (Hurst and Oxford University Press, 2012) and The Islamist Challenge in Algeria: A Political History (Ithaca and New York University Press, 1997) and co-editor of Civil Resistance in the Arab Spring: Triumphs and Disasters (Oxford University Press, 2015). Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī (865–925 CE), also known by his Latinized name Rhazes, was one of the greatest figures in the history of medicine in the Islamic tradition, and one of its most controversial philosophers. While we have ample surviving evidence for his medical thought, his philosophical ideas mostly have to be pieced together on the basis of reports found in other authors, who are often hostile to him. To discuss with us the life, work and legacy of al-Rāzī is Prof. Peter Adamson. Prof. Adamson is professor of philosophy in late antiquity and in the Islamic world at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich as well as professor of ancient and medieval philosophy at King's College London. Aside from articles, monographs, and edited books, he is known for hosting the weekly podcast "History of Philosophy without any gaps". Timestamps 02.10: Al-Rāzī was born in the city of Rayy near modern-day Tehran before moving to Baghdad to practise medicine. What do we know about his life? 06:13: The metaphysical doctrine of Razi derives from the theory of the "five eternals", according to which the world is produced out of an interaction between God and four other eternal principles. Tell us more about this. 11.40: He has been accused of heresy by Muslims for denying prophecy, or perhaps he was misunderstood? 20.10: There is a statue of al-Rāzī donated by the Islamic Republic of Iran outside the United Nations Office at Vienna. How can his philosophical heritage still be relevant to us today? 24.15: And finally before we end tell us where listeners can turn next to learn more about today's topic and what are other current projects that listeners can anticipate? The laws of Dhimma, or governance of non-Muslim minorities in a Muslim polity, can arouse difficult feelings amongst both Muslims and non-Muslims especially at sites of tension and conflict between them around the globe. To discuss with us today a medieval legal work on these rulings is Dr. Antonia Bosanquet, author of Minding their Place: Space and Religious Hierarchy in Ibn al-Qayyim's Aḥkām ahl al-dhimma published by Brill in 2021. She is currently a researcher at the University of Hamburg and a part-time farmer. Timestamps 02.25: Before we look at Ibn al-Qayyim on Dhimma governance. Let's first ask ourselves what is Dhimma governance? Our modern sensibilities as residents of secular nation states find discrimination based on religious backgrounds offensive, although arguably that's precisely what some European countries do today... 07.23: Before we look at Ibn al-Qayyim's work, tell us about the life and career of the author. He was born in Damascus 1292CE... 13.05: You argue that Ibn al-Qayyim's book should be seen as more of a personal interpretation of what ought to be done rather than reflective of actual practice on the ground... 19.00: Turning to the present, the most recent attempt after almost a century and half to apply Dhimma rulings was by ISIS in their failed state. Ibn al-Qayyim today is best regarded for his works on personal spiritual reform. The call for Shariah in the modern Muslim world is often seen synonymous as a call for justice against corruption, but can make non-Muslim minorities feel uncomfortable. Can medieval Dhimma rulings still find a place to critique today's world of imagined communities and fictions of nationalism? 24.30: And finally before we end, tell us where listeners can turn next to learn more about today's topic, and what are other current projects that listeners can anticipate? "This blessed cenotaph was made for the Imam (al-Shāfʿī)…by ʿUbayd the carpenter, known as Ibn Maʿālai, in the months of the year five hundred seventy-four. May God have mercy on him; may he [also] have mercy on those who are merciful toward him, those who call for mercy upon him, and upon all who worked with him—the woodworkers and carvers—and all the believers." Thus reads the inscription on the teak cenotaph at the grave of Imām al-Shafiʿī. For at least ten centuries, in a city replete with holy sites, the mausoleum of Imam al-Shafiʿī (d. AD 820) has been perhaps the most beloved and popular of Cairene shrines. To discuss the mausoleum of Imām al-Shāfiʿī and the role of arts and crafts as a source in Islamic(ate) historiography is Dr. Stephennie Mulder. Dr. Mulder is Associate Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the recipient of the Hamilton Book Award Grand Prize, the Syrian Studies Association Award, and Iran's World Prize for Book of the Year for her book The Shrines of the ‘Alids in Medieval Syria: Sunnis, Shi's and the Architecture of Coexistence (Edinburgh, 2014). The book was also selected as an ALA Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Title. Timestamps 02.32 The mausoleum was originally built by Saladin in 1180CE before a renovation by his successor, al-Malik al-Kāmil only 30 years later in 1211. Not much of Saladin's original building survives. Why don't you first give a physical description of the site? 04.30 At first blush, one would assume Saladin's intentions in building this mausoleum was an assertion of Sunni triumph over two centuries of Fatimid Shia-Ismaili rule but you argue that the construction of the mausoleum was actually part of a bitter intra-Sunni factional infighting between the Shāfiʿī-Ashʿarites and the Ḥanbalis. 10.12 Typically students of Islamic history rely on written chronicles for a narrative of events. How can a study of buildings and crafts contribute to a critical reading of these sources? 16.51 Turning to the present, you work on the conservation of antiquities and cultural heritage sites endangered by war and illegal trafficking. Tell us more about your work in this field and a call to action for our listeners. 22.41 And finally before we end tell us where listeners can turn next to learn more about today's topic and what are other current projects that listeners can anticipate? Literally meaning "speech, word, utterance" among other things, Kalām or philosophy of religion within the Islamic ecumene has divided Muslim believers about it scope, methods and even its validity in itself. To give us a brief history of Kalām is the presenter of a new podcast devoted to explaining Kalām to the uninitiated, Dr. Hannah Erlwein. Dr. Erlwein completed her PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies on Arguments for the Existence of God in Classical Islamic Thought which is now published and she is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Das Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte or Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. What is the socio-political and intellectual-cultural context of its birth and development? 07.13 The practitioner of Kalām is known as a mutakallim. Tell us about some notable figures in the tradition. 11.43 The Islamic scholastic tradition across different school has a culture of texts, commentaries, supra-commentaries and summaries. Coo! Coooo! Cooo! This week, Sara and Runa go to bird school, which is for dating gorgeous birds in Hatoful Boyfriend, a dating sim about pigeons that you can meet, befriend, and romance at St. PigeoNation's academy. What would Sara and Runa, ostensibly two humans, possibly do at a bird school though? Will they be able to handle bird P.E. with flying lessons and wing stretches? Will they join the student council and learn the intricacies of bird political parties? Will they spend too much time in the infirmary and end up as an experimental subject for a grouchy partridge!?Hatoful Boyfriend (2011) is a delightful dating sim starring Hiyoko Tosaka, the sole human attending a school for intelligent birds. Set in the late 22nd Century, you follow Hiyoko as she navigates school clubs, electives, exams, holidays, and the milestones of high school life while trying (with varying success) to get closer to the beautiful birds who now fill her daily life. If Hiyoko spends a lot of time studying and joins the infirmary staff, maybe she can get to know Yuuya, the most suave and popular pigeon in school. Maybe if she plays to her strengths and spends all of her time running for the track team, she can finally understand the pudding connoisseur Okosan. Perhaps, even, if she spends enough time working at the library, she'll finally get the reclusive underclassman, Nageki, to open up to her and explain why he never seems to leave that one room. In addition to these pigeons Hiyoko can also get closer to Ryouta, her childhood friend with a weak constitution; Sakuya, an aristocratic fantail from france and apparent Half-brother to Yuuya; Anghel, an absolutely perfect bleeding heart luzon; Kazuaki, Hiyoko's homeroom teacher and math instructor; Azami, a cool java sparrow who rides her vintage scooter with a strong conviction to obey traffic ordinances; or Shuu, the school doctor who seems to be the center of several disturbing rumors about student disappearances and dismemberments. Where will Hiyoko's time at St. PigeoNation's take her? To lifelong love with a childhood friend, no matter how short that life might be? To an action-packed life on the run with a secret agent? Into the depths of the school to learn the secrets, and tragedies, of its recent past? Whatever routes you choose to explore, Hatoful Boyfriend is a delightful and extremely fun dating sim full of heart, humor, a bit of pain, and a whole flock of gorgeous pigeons.  Join us as we see what it's like to go to bird school, which is for romancing birds! As always, if you like the show please leave us a review! These relationships stretch back decades, to the early 1960s and 1970s respectively. Using this history as a foundation, the book examines the connections between Qaradawi's and Bin Bayyah's rival projects and the development of Qatar's and the UAE's competing state-brands and foreign policies. It raises questions about how to theorize the relationships between the Muslim scholarly-elite (the ulama) and the nation-state. Over the course of the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis, Qaradawi and Bin Bayyah shaped the Al Thani's and Al Nahyan's competing ideologies in important ways. Offering new ways for academics to think about Doha and Abu Dhabi as hegemonic centers of Islamic scholarly authority alongside historical centers of learning such as Cairo, Medina, or Qom, this book will appeal to those with an interest in modern Islamic authority, the ulama, Gulf politics, as well as the Arab Spring and its aftermath. David H. Warren is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Jewish, Islamic, and Middle Eastern Studies at Washington University in St Louis. His research examines the politics of the Muslim scholarly-elite (the ulama), with a particular focus on the Arab Spring and its aftermath. He is the author of Rivals in the Gulf: Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Abdullah Bin Bayyah, and the Qatar-UAE Contest Over the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis (Routledge 2021). Dr Usaama al-Azami is Department Lecturer in Contemporary Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. His research explores the way in which Islamic scholars, known as the ulama, have responded to modernity, especially in the political realm. That being said, it’s sometimes fun to see how far you can push the limits. Also, it’s often nice to have an assortment of different power levels, so that you can play in any pod, and maybe also great if it’s the end of the evening, and you don’t quite have time for a longer game. A deck that brushes up against cEDH. Maybe a 1-or-2 holds barred instead of no holds barred? A deck that tries to be super powerful, while remaining just shy of cEDH. Disclaimer: Neither Zack nor Ryan are cEDH experts, so we may get some of this wrong, but we think it’s a useful framework for a discussion What is a “High Powered Deck”? This might be a way to intentionally restrain yourself, and as we know restrictions can breed creativity Cheap Interaction Most decks play some of this already, example: Swords to Plowshares Stuff like Winter Orb and Armageddon, or wheels + Hullbreacher/Narset, Parter of Veils Stax pieces Stuff like Aven Mindcensor or Dranith Magistrate Hate Bears I think you can include some of the above in any of the variations of Pick 2, although you always want to make sure you’re having the Rule 0 discussion, especially if going the Stax route! cEDH is built upon a few different pillars. The 3 we just mentioned are probably some of the most important. Here are some others Fast Mana/Tutors/Combo: Pick 2 I thought it might be fun for us to power rank the different variations on the fly, so listed in no particular order are Fast Mana + Tutors Fast Mana + Combo Tutors + Combo Which to choose? Fast Mana + Combo This seems like one of the more difficult builds to pull off. You’ll want to have lots of different redundant combos, because without tutors, you may not see all the right pieces Lots of card draw to help you assemble your combo pieces Also, self mill can be a way to “virtually draw” a lot of cards if you have lots of ways to recur things from your graveyard Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord and Phyrexian Devourer Niv-Mizzet (Parun or Firemind) + Curiosity Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter Godo, Bandit Warlord + Helm of the Host This might also include a deck that has a single card combo with the Commander This would be a deck that tutors for answers to specific board states, it doesn’t tutor for combo pieces. Sometimes a deck may want to include a lot of fast mana if the “Mana Value” of the Commander is medium to high. Some of my first Commander decks were this way, with a TON of tutors, and lots of mana rocks/dorks, and just general good stuff, or cards that had high synergy with the Commander. This is the type of deck where you really restrict yourself from playing any combos, and you get super sad when you accidentally find a combo. Fast Mana + Tutors I think this one depends on where you draw the line for “Fast Mana”. Does Sol Ring Count? Signets? Normal Commander Ramp? This one might be the closest to cEDH, especially depending on how cheap the combo pieces are (Think Thassa’s Oracle + Demonic Consultation) I think most players will allow for normal commander ramp in this category.  Personally, I think Tutors and Combo should be the strongest of the options, but in my experience it’s not always worked out.  I think the density of combos and tutors you are running factors in here as well. If you’re running like one combo and two ways to tutor it, you’re probably going to have a rough time.  Tutors + Combo Zack Yawgmoth has tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Grim, Recurring Insight, Doomsday) and combos. Aetherfux/Bolas’ Citadel/Divining Top. The only “fast mana” I run is Sol Ring, etc.  Thrasios / Tormod has combos, but no form of fast mana or tutoring. I’ve considered making this sultai and adding tutors. I just brewed Samut, Voice of Dissent after watching Joe Johnson play his version on “I Hate Your Deck” Normally, I pull back quite a bit on cards I include in a deck. For example, Survival of the Fittest and/or Worldy Tutor would probably be quite good in my Ashaya, Soul of the Wild deck, but I chose not to include them. I decided I really wanted to go all-out on the Samut deck, so it’s got all kinds of nice cards in it. I intentionally avoided combos, so no Kikki-Jikki + Felidar Sovereign. This deck falls into the “Fast Mana + Tutors” permutation I’ve got Azami, Lady of Scrolls + Mind Over Matter as mentioned above My Winota, Joiner of Forces is close to cEDH, but mostly just in how quickly it can win. It’s got a decent amount of Fast Mana, and has so many token generators, that it consistently has a lot of creatures to attack and get Winota triggers with that it feels “combo-y” Emry has “Fast Mana + Combo”  Ryan Let’s see if any of our decks fall into this category! Let’s talk about what the different variations might look like Main Topic - High Powered Decks Summary - We hope you found this an interesting way to think about decks on the more powerful side of the EDH spectrum.Do you have any builds that fit squarely into one of the 3 variations we outlined? Andrew March is Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Masachusetts Amherst. His research and teaching interests are in the areas of political philosophy, Islamic law and political thought, religion and political theory, and comparative and non-Western political theory more generally. His first book, Islam and Liberal Citizenship: The Search for an Overlapping Consensus (Oxford, 2009) is an exploration of the Islamic juridical discourse on the rights, loyalties, and obligations of Muslim minorities in liberal politics, and won the 2009 Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion from the American Academy of Religion. Andrew has published articles on Islamic law and political thought, secularism, religion and free speech, religious freedom and the boundaries of marriage in liberal society. The Caliphate of Man: Popular Sovereignty in Modern Islamic Thought examines the problem of divine and popular sovereignty in modern Islamic thought through the Arab Spring. Taken direct from the publisher's webpage: A political theorist teases out the century-old ideological transformation at the heart of contemporary discourse in Muslim nations undergoing political change. The Arab Spring precipitated a crisis in political Islam. In Egypt Islamists have been crushed. In Turkey they have descended into authoritarianism. In Tunisia they govern but without the label of “political Islam.” Andrew explores how, before this crisis, Islamists developed a unique theory of popular sovereignty, one that promised to determine the future of democracy in the Middle East. This began with the claim of divine sovereignty, the demand to restore the sharīʿa in modern societies. But prominent theorists of political Islam also advanced another principle, the Quranic notion that God's authority on earth rests not with sultans or with scholars' interpretation of written law but with the entirety of the Muslim people, the umma. Drawing on this argument, utopian theorists such as Abū'l-Aʿlā Mawdūdī and Sayyid Quṭb released into the intellectual bloodstream the doctrine of the caliphate of man: while God is sovereign, He has appointed the multitude of believers as His vicegerent. The Caliphate of Man argues that the doctrine of the universal human caliphate underpins a specific democratic theory, a kind of Islamic republic of virtue in which the people have authority over the government and religious leaders. But is this an ideal regime destined to survive only as theory? Dr Usaama al-Azami is Department Lecturer in Contemporary Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. His research explores the way in which Islamic scholars, known as the ulama, have responded to modernity, especially in the political realm. He is the author of a forthcoming monograph entitled Islam and the Arab Revolutions: The Ulama between Democracy and Autocracy.

Ford "don't buy" warning for 2021: Endura SUV just axed!

Hilariously enough, Ford named its Kluger competitor the Endura. Now they’ve boned it, in Australia, less than two short years after its release. This just satirises itself. The non-enduring Endura - truth once again being weirder than fiction... You can help support the channel, securely via PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=DSL9A3MWEMNBW&source=url Ford Oz gave birth to baby Endura here in December 2018, with (one imagines) high hopes of it growing rapidly and taking the lucrative fight to Kluger and CX-9 and Santa Fe and Sorento … and CX-8, and Subaru Outback, and even Tiguan Allspace. But all of these SUVs continue to out-sell Endura, which couldn’t even match Skoda Kodiaq on sales. Go figure. Well done, Ford. #Consistency. Even Holden Acadia out-sold Endura - which is, kinda, a neat trick, for a brand that doesn’t actually exist any more. So far this year, Toyota’s uber-popular Kluger is living proof that mediocrity is the recipe for outright success in seven-seat SUVs. Mediocre Kluger outsold non-enduring Endura by more than seven to one. CX-9 out-sold it more than five to one. This is a race, with absolutely no need for the video referee. Ford’s marketing is so bad that (I’m tipping) most SUV buyers don’t even know that a non-enduring Endura ever existed. And now, of course, it doesn’t. Not being able to sell a large SUV in ‘Straya is like not being able to drink 100 long-necks of VB, every hour. Or being unable to find a venomous reptile within 10 feet of the back door. Not being able to sell a large SUV here is un-friggin’-’Strayan. So Ford has boned this unappealing vehicle, after selling only 1015 non-enduring Enduras - and I wouldn’t want to be one of those owners, or the 1986 punters who bought one in late 2018 or across 2019. Nobody, statistically, wanted a non-enduring Endura, new. Nobody, statistically, is gunna want yours at resale time, used, with three years of your residual farts infused into the seats. The term ‘depreciation dog’ springs to mind. Buying a depreciation dog is, of course, a great way to burn cash, and I want you to know that this is not merely idle speculation in this case: According to Redbook, if you had purchased in 2018 a range-topping non-enduring Endura Titanium at launch for about $68,000 (before on-road costs) it’d trade for about $38,800 today, on average. You’d burn just over $29,000. If, instead, you’d come to your senses at the 11th hour and procured alternatively a range-topping Mazda CX-9 Azami, for about $66,500, it’d trade today for about $45,000, and you’d burn only about $21,500. This puts you $7500 behind, in just 23 months, in the Ford. Imagine getting $80 a week and just throwing it out the window, arbitrarily, every Friday afternoon. Because that’s what non-enduring Endura buyers have been doing, effectively. Look, the kindest I can be is to say: It’s probably OK to buy a Ranger or an Everest. There’s a reasonable demand for them, used. But as for the rest of the SUVs and all the cars bearing the blue-oval badge... ...the risk of your resale value making like Dresden on February 15th, 1945, over the next three to five years is rather high. Some would say, unacceptably so, and I would be one of those saying that.

Afghanistan, strategically located between South, Central and West Asia has been invaded and fought over by the world's superpowers for centuries. Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, the British Empire, the Soviet Union have all tried and failed to control Afghanistan. And war rages in the country today: the US-led military coalition has been fighting in Afghanistan since 2001, and conflict has become the longest war in US history.Dawood Azami talks to the British, Russian, American and Afghan fighters and soldiers who fought in what some historians have called the Graveyard of Empires. He finds out what drew them to this formidable battlefield, what they found there, how they view their enemy and how their experience changed them as soldiers and as individuals. Azami looks for patterns in history: the British fought three wars in Afghanistan in the 19th and 20th Century before they sent in troops after 2001. Some of the British servicemen were aware of their predecessor's defeats as they came up against stiff Afghan resistance; as were the Taliban fighters. From a US General whose ancestor also governed in Afghanistan in the 19th Century, and an infantryman caught up in a close quarter's firefight with the Taliban, to a Mujahedeen fighter ambushing a Soviet military convoy in the mountains, Azami follows the twists and turns of conflict in Afghanistan.Image: Afghan security personnel on a military vehicle, Credit: Noorullah Shirzada/AFP/Getty Images
