In December of 1979, Paul Bennewitz, a man who wrote he had been studying the UFO phenomenon since 1948, was told by his wife that she heard a high-pitched buzzing sound right over their house after being woken up by their small dog who was barking before dawn one morning. Bennewitz had been recently seeing strange lights over Archuleta Mesa in Dulce, New Mexico, and thought to himself (not wanting to alarm his wife) that maybe what he had been observing was now observing him. His house, in the Four Hills neighborhood east of Albuquerque, had a second-floor observation deck with a view of the Manzano Weapons Storage Area at Kirtland AFB to the south. He began watching the skies nightly and managed to capture images over the MWSA of what he was convinced were brightly lit objects with unusual characteristics. This set off a train of events that involved the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, a self-proclaimed CIA-trained disinformation agent, and a well-known author and UFO researcher. In August 1988, Paul Bennewitz had a mental breakdown, convinced of an alien and government conspiracy against him. His supposed proof of UFOs over New Mexico drew the attention of an Air Force counterintelligence agent. This agent fed Bennewitz's belief in aliens for years, ultimately leading to his institutionalization.  The summer of 1952 saw a flurry of UFO activity over Washington, D.C. Edward J. Ruppelt of Project Blue Book seemed the only one taking it seriously amidst bureaucratic obstacles. After a scientific panel recommended downplaying UFO reports to avoid hysteria, Ruppelt retired. His subsequent book criticized the change in UFO policy. Both he and Bennewitz asked too many questions.

Anthony Sanchez had his first extraterrestrial contact experience at age 5 with a cube-shaped spacecraft. He has had similar encounters and witnessed multiple UFOs throughout his childhood. In 1989, he began actively researching UFO reports about Area 51 and a mysterious underground facility in Dulce, New Mexico. He did extensive research on the revelations of Paul Bennewitz, Phil Schneider, and other witnesses about the existence of extraterrestrials living in a vast underground tunnel system performing biological experiments on captive humans. He later met with a military whistleblower using the pseudonym Colonel X, who shared first-hand reports about classified joint military and extraterrestrial programs being conducted at Dulce. Sanchez's first book, UFO Highway (2011), focused on his Dulce research and featured the revelations of Colonel X. More recently, after recovering from a debilitating illness, Sanchez wrote UFO Nexus (2023) where he brings his UFO research into the contemporary era by examining recent developments featuring the whistleblower and witness testimonies of David Grusch and other military officials.
