Today, my guests represent a cross-generational journey through the ever-evolving world of jazz.  Alex McArthur is a singer and storyteller whose resume reads like that of a musician three times her age. A winner of multiple JazzBuffalo Vocalist of the Year awards, Alex brings a distinct soulfulness to any music she lends her voice to, whether she's singing something she wrote herself, or flexing her interpretive muscles on the works of legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and Mavis Staples.  Alex is joined today by a man who has acted as a significant mentor in her musical journey.  Pianist George Caldwell is credited by Alex as, quote, “the first person I ever attempted to sing jazz in front of, and the person who encouraged me to explore vocal jazz and improvisation in the first place.”  In his role as Director of the Student Jazz Ensembles and Music Piano Performance Instructor at the University at Buffalo, George has employed his decades of experience as a Grammy-winning professional musician to help mold the musical imaginations of countless young artists-in-the-making.  Those decades of experience include tenures with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, tap dancer and choreographer Saivon Glover, R&B legend Ruth Brown, and right here in Buffalo, the awe-inspiring Star People, a Miles Davis Repertory Ensemble.  Currently, Alex and George are in the midst of performing Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, a recreation of Billie Holiday's final performance, with Alex inhabiting the role of Lady Day, and George acting as Musical Director.  The show, a MusicalFare production, is running at Shea's Smith Theatre in Buffalo's Theatre and Entertainment District, through February 15. Many people are experiencing these, and not sure what is happening. A spiritual awakening is a profound realization or shift in consciousness that allows you to perceive and understand life from a deeper perspective. This experience often involves a heightened awareness of the self, the universe, and the interconnectedness of all beings. It can lead to a reevaluation of one's beliefs, often resulting in a greater sense of purpose and inner peace. During a spiritual awakening, individuals may experience various phenomena, such as increased intuition, a sense of unity with the world, and a desire for personal growth and transformation. When awakened, Kundalini energy travels up the spine through the chakras, or energy centers, leading to heightened states of awareness, spiritual enlightenment, and personal transformation This is really important as the mind can start to take over and question everything taking you down the rabbit hole of information.  And if you aren't prepared can very often call in lots of shadow energy especially right now with all the shifts in consciousness occuring. It's imporant to learn how to work with this through practices like yoga, meditation, and breathwork guided by someone like myself.. a spiritual teacher. Spiritual awakenings can happen in many ways..for me, it was from a crisis. I was lost, unsure of what to do, and I was searching for help. Talk therapy wasn't getting me any way beyond having someone to talk to which is helpful but I wasn't making progress. I had no belief in myself… until that one day when I was guided to a Spiritual teacher.  That day was profound and is still in my memory.  A friend had met twins at a new age shop in Roslyn, NY… Dreams East.  She went to one twin and me to the other for spiritual counseling. I didn't know what that meant but I knew I needed help. We met, we talked about my life, she guided me with some breathing, and then did some hands-on energy.  I left, got back in my car. As I sat there feeling a deep peace, something I hadn't felt in months, I heard a voice.. loud and clear.. saying, You are going to be ok. It was so loud I turned around to see if anyone was in the back seat of my car but it was my Spirit speaking to me.. a message from my soul. It was profound for me. Spiritual awakenings can be. Another really important aspect of this portal opening is one of expanded consciousness.  I have regularly been receiving messages from my Lemurian guides who are continually talking to me about the ability for all of us to connect … galactically.. universally with our star people.  This expanded consciousness is one that opens us up to a higher state of living in our everyday lives. Star People or Starseeds are a variant of the belief in alien-human hybrids in New Age belief and fringe theory. David Lonebear Sanipass is the last remaining Sagen, or Spiritual Leader, of the Mi'kmaq Nation. He is a spiritual scientist, engineer, storyteller, flute and basket maker. The Mi'kmaq (pronounced mi-gah-mah) are an indigenous people presently located in Maine and Canada, though originally they populated areas from Boston, Massachusetts northward into Canada. David's birth was prophesied by elders over 300 years before his birth. He was trained extensively from birth by over 600 elders from around the world for the first 26 years of his life on the side of Lonebear mountain. This included what are referred to as the “star teachings” as well as advanced mathematics, science, chemistry, biology, physics and engineering. Clifford MahootyZuni Pueblo Indian ElderMahooty was a Zuni Pueblo Indian elder, and member of the tribal orders of the Kachina Priest hood, Galaxy medicine society, Sun Clan, and wisdom keeper of the Zuni history and spiritual practices. Mahooty is a retired Civil/Environmental Engineer (BSCE-NMSU-1969). He worked for Shell Oil Company and various US government programs for housing under USHUD, DOI-BIA planning design and construction of Indian reservation infrastructures and school projects. Mahooty served in the US Public Health Service, as a commissioned officer, to provide services to American Indian communities. He served in Oklahoma and Arizona in water, wastewater, and solid waste systems. Mahooty served as the National Environmental Justice Coordinator, in the DOI-BIA for the 561 federally recognized Indian tribes. He coordinated with various agencies of federal, state and tribal governments to enforce laws and regulations to protect sacred sites, and lands against desecrations, pollution of natural resources, illegal taking of artifacts, burials, and sacred objects. He represented the Indian tribe's environmental assessments and impact statements. Mahooty was instrumental in the contracting of federally funded programs, where Indian Nations can administer projects including: planning, design, construction of facilities and infrastructure, schools, hospitals, law and order, housing.
