Show Notes Episode 462: Saga of A Star Wars Rip Off This week Host Dave Bledsoe angrily shouts at Producer Gavin insisting he was NOT playing with his dolls again. (He totally was.) On the show this week we head back to 1978 to talk about a short lived but influential Science Fiction TV show that wasn't JUST a Star Wars rip off. (But kind of doing that a little) Battlestar Galactica. Along the way we learn a little about some other short lived shows of the 70's. (That Janeway/Odo crime fighting team up sounded great!) Then we dive right into the story of a Hollywood titan, some Latter Day Saint theology and how they came together to fight the Cylons. We follow the story from production to debut in theaters and on the small screen at home. We meet the actors who would create memorable characters (and some we wish we could forget, FUCK BOXY!). From the beginning of its single season to the inevitable lawsuits we tell the story of a ragtag fugitive fleet trying desperately to find a new way to monetize the Star Wars mania sweeping the world. Our Sponsor this week is Sy Lonika's Centurion AI, who wants you to know, they have a plan. We open the show with a promo for the show and close with TBone Shady who is just looking for some kind of way out of here. Check your software and make-sure to update your anti-viral software because our Casual Explorers are looking at times when Artifical Intelligence went ‘Wibbly' in the first episode, Voyager's ‘Dreadnought,' Torres deals with a super-intelligent missile from her past, then in Discovery's ‘Stormy Weather,' we do some exploration in a dark abyss while the Discovery's sentient computer struggles with self-doubt about her own skills and talents (and gurl, same) and then, Miles has to endure ‘A Mathmatically Perfect Redemption' and has to deal with his most hated Lower Decks character and consistently get their name wrong, on a completely seperate tangent, Peanut Hamper is the damn worst. No connection. Honest. We didn't use AI to write these show notes. Episodes talked about: ‘Dreadnought' (09:15) ‘Stormy Weather' (37:51) ‘A Mathmatically Perfect Redemption' (1:04:17) Talking Points: Paranoia, Iain M. Banks' Culture spaceship names, the movies of Roger Corman, CabinCon, the Infamous Starbucks Gary, early Voyager forgetting The Doctor matters, making fun of British Prime Ministers, Kes getting stuff to do, Voyager's juggling subplots, Voyager's bad reputation in the Delta Quadrant, Delta Quadrant being wasted world-building, war-crimes, Dark Star, more 2000ad talk with Rogue Trooper, British Beavis and Butthead, large gentlemen struggling to put on jeans Miles and Charlie's utter resignation with Ed Sheeran, big expanses of nothing, Miles is very behind on Discovery even though he does a Star Trek Podcast, Discovery's honest earnestness, New Battlestar Galactica, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy doing things several decades earlier than Discoery, the Short Trek- Calypso, Miles and Charlie talk about never truly growing up and how that can be toxic, Rick and Morty's lineage in Star Trek Lower Decks, robot/owl Rule 34, Peanut Hamper being the damn worse and why Arnold Judas Rimmer might be one of the greatest characters in all of Science-Fiction TV.

This week on the show, we chit-chat about last Sunday's Oscars before getting into the topic at hand: Overlooked Science Fiction TV. We each selected a sci-fi series from the '90s that we feel has been somehow overlooked in the larger pop-culture spectrum: Earth 2, Kurt Vonnegut's Monkey House, and The Visitor. Do these shows hold-up now, or should we have left them be in the wasteland of television obscurity? To find out, download the link below, or better yet, subscribe on iTunes! With equal measures of awe and admiration the Regular Joes, Barry, Dave and Tod examine the evolving role of women in Science Fiction TV and films. Was Star Trek, with it's space receptionist, really all that forward looking? Or was it Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner who's similar progressions from victim to bad ass, paved the way for Battlestar Galactica's Starbuck and Fringe's Olivia Dunham. Also What's in the Box, and Desert Island DVD's.
