One of the final collaborations between John Wayne and John Ford, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) pits attorney Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) against a cruel and violent gangster Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). Stoddard must decide if he wants to stick to his principles and defeat Valance through legal means, or use frontier justice. ¡Y hoy no venimos solos! 🎬🎬🎬🎬 Música utilizada en el episodio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc1iYRrMBWk Contacta con nosotros: elclaquetazo.podcast@gmail.com Otras plataformas donde también puedes encontrarnos: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/el.claquetazo/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ElClaquetazo_ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@elclaquetazo23 ****************************************************************************** Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
L'Homme qui tua Liberty Valance, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, de John Ford sort en 1962. Classic westerns!? Why that's right up our alley, dude.
In this episode, we continue our month of classic Westerns with the 1962 John Ford classic, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", starring James Stewart, John Wayne and Vera Miles! Listen now!
The problem with democracy
When people think of the American western movie, it's usually gunfights and cowboys and bank robbers and romance and, if we're being honest, a pretty rough portrayal of nearly anyone who isn't a white man. They can be fun and exciting but they are often devoid of substance and many times can end up promoting some unhealthy perspectives. The fact that John Ford and John Wayne were two of the most prolific and influential figures in this genre makes their work in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance that much more interesting. Rather than being a simplistic tale of a strong, quiet man with a gun saving the day, the movie is far murkier than that and actually examines the legacy of that type of story as well as the American myth in general. Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Vera Miles star in this subversive and deeply American tale of violence, deception, passion, disillusionment, and hope and whether or not you're a fan of the western genre, there's quite a lot here to consider and discuss. Which is why we are very excited to welcome Elliot Coen from the Boutique Blu-rays YT channel to the show! He's well versed in the genre and brings a wonderful perspective to it. We hope you enjoy and if you do, be sure to share the show with your friends who would appreciate it! **The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is currently streaming on Prime Video in the US** Previous Substantive Cinema Shows Shoutouts: Kubrick: An Odyssey Universal monster movies Dune & Dune: Part Two Nightmare(s in a Damaged Brain) Peeping Tom Follow Elliot: YouTube Channel Instagram Follow Us: Instagram Twitter Facebook YouTube Channel Share Your Questions/Suggestions/Feedback With Us: Email: thesubstancepod@gmail.com DM on Instagram Support Us: Support the show with an individual donation on CashApp to $TheSubstancePod or become a monthly Patreon supporter at patreon.com/TheSubstancePod --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thesubstancepod/support

Like onions and ogres, this movie has layers, but what do you expect with a film starring John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart and directed by John Ford? Robin's favorite Western, this one has everything, even for those who are hesitant to watch the genre. Ransom Stoddard (Stewart), a seasoned politician that began as a humble attorney tells his story of the early days of Shinbone, the wild and lawless frontier of the Western territories, and the event that would shoot him to fame. When Tom Donophon (Wayne) dies, he decides to set the record straight about this unsung hero who was buried with hardly a funeral in his hometown that benefited so much from what Tom did.Sue Matheson's Bookhttps://www.instagram.com/realoldreels/
On this last episode of 2023 Mr. Palumbo dives into American popular culture and attempts to analyze the classic western film "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". Our favorite social studies teacher looks into themes like truth versus legend, standing up to bullies and the responsibility that comes with freedom. The discussion also ventures into the challenges and opportunities faced for the people of the late 19th who were brave enough to venture into the American western frontier. There is also an acknowledgement of how movies help shape peoples' perceptions of who or what they are and what the can be. So grab your popcorn and hold on there pilgrim (as John Wayne would say) as we enjoy a conversation about classic American cinema
How should one deal with evil? What are people capable of doing when they are given unconstrained liberty? Why does democracy work when people run things physically away from the very people it wants to assist? These are a few of the questions that arise as one watches John Ford's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Progress and civilization are wonderful—but the train that signals them also carries a lot of moral pollution. Join Mike and Dan for a dive into this perfect Western and hear what happens when they apply the famous line, “Print the legend,” to John Ford's, John Wayne's, and Jimmy Stewart's military careers. Pick up that steak and give it a listen! Each month we will be watching (and encouraging our listening audience to watch) a film that we think captures an important conversation in our culture. In this series, we explore one small corner of the world of cinema and ask, “why are some movies good and other movies… false?” We also hope to model how to get more out of your movies and see more clearly the messages Hollywood is sending us all the time! All of our films are selected to be totally family friendly! We continue our Reel Talk series looking at the western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). This John Ford western starring James Stewart and John Wayne takes us back to the frontier of the American west where the law was in short supply and civilization struggled to establish itself among the greedy and the violent. His friend, a gunslinging cowboy, and the rest of the town can't keep him safe. Will he betray his principles of law and order to fight back with the gun?
We're back with arguably the greatest western ever made about the evolution of the American spirit. It's heart felt, it's funny, it's shockingly violent. Thats right, its The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance aka Rashomon for the United States. Enjoy.
The writer and filmmaker Scout Tafoya, author of the new book But God Made Him a Poet: Watching John Ford in the 21st Century, joins the show to discuss one of Ford's greatest films, the 1962 western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, starring John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin. Made in the twilight of Ford's career, the downbeat Liberty Valance is an example of what we would now call a filmmaker's Late Style: a veteran director taking stock of their own legacy in their final works. Liberty Valance is a preview of the conclusion of the classic era of the Western genre in the tumult of the sixties, the end of the Old West as represented by Wayne, the cowboy archetype finally replaced by constitutional order and modern progress as embodied by Stewart, as a young eastern lawyer who travels west to the town of Shinbone, intending to introduce education and order to a lawless place approaching statehood, and is soon targeted for death by feared local outlaw Liberty Valance (Marvin). Scout has seen every one of John Ford's surviving films; we discuss Liberty Valance in the context of Ford's career and worldview, grapple with the ongoing question in our age of assessing the art of the problematic artist, and consider what this film has to say about the consequences of violence and the media's role in reinforcing the official version of historical facts. 4x4 JOHN FORD PART TWO: THE SEARCHERS & THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE W/RICK PATTLast week we talked about a few seminal Ford films that weren't westerns (The Informer and Grapes of Wrath). This week, get them saddles secure and oil them there spurs (??) because we have two of Ford's most famous collabs with John Wayne (the actor, not the airport). Their most enduring of 17 films together, THE SEARCHERS (1956) is a visual reminder of the power of film. You know the story: racist dude visits his brother, who lives in an inhospitable - but lovely piece - in Monument Valley. A band of Native Americans kills the family and kidnaps Natalie Wood, resulting into an obsessive years-long hunt by Wayne and Jeffrey Hunter. It's a difficult film, thematically, but Ford uses Wayne and his by-then sanctified screen persona to explore knotty issues in a visual way that has earned The Searchers its place at the top of the film pantheon.Speaking of doing interesting things with Wayne's screen persona, how about THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962)? Wayne did the film as a favor to Ford, who was well past his sell-by date in Hollywood by this point. Wayne plays a total a-hole against Jimmy Stewart, who plays a kind of harbinger of modernity in a western town with Wayne as one of them violent western tamers no longer needed. Between them (besides a way too young Vera Miles) is hothead Lee Marvin as the titular Liberty Valance, a scourge of anarchy, both a reminder of the violent recent past and a promise of what always tags along with prosperity and the illusion of safety in a society. Ford's themes of community, violence and the intersection of a violent past and a bright future are in full display here.A couple good ones. Again Rick Patt curates this mini Ford fest and walks us through these films. Two Old Bitches: Stories from Women who Reimagine, Reinvent and Rebel
Gifted ceramic artists Rosanne Ebner, 67, and Liberty Valance, 73, have worked with clay for five or six decades. They say laughing that “it just happened,” yet it is clear that their art is an irresistible and abiding calling. It surfaced for Liberty in preschool where she created her first works–an elephant and ashtray she still has— and for Rosanne in high school. Liberty and Rosanne are also generous and skilled teachers. They are both instructors at the Brickhouse Ceramic Art Center, a wonderful space in Long Island City, NY, where they are longstanding members of a diverse intergenerational community of teachers, students and affiliated artists connected by craft and care, and where members are making ceramics into their nineties. Idelisse – who solidified her profound love of clay over the past 9 months at Brickhouse -- has been enthralled by the ways this community satisfies its members human need for a sense of belonging, mutual support and celebration. In our conversation, all three share the joys of losing themselves and the awareness of time when engaging deeply in creative practice. If you're curious about what Rosanne and Liberty mean when they describe working with clay as a collaboration where often “the clay knows better” or about the story of how Liberty Valance got her name (Hint: It involves a short-lived marriage and a spiritual teacher), you'll want to join us for a big-hearted and laughter filled conversation about art, work and life with these two dearest of friends. Check out some recent ceramic art by Rosanne, Liberty and Idelisse right here!
