EFP 57: Douglas Sirk in the 1930s with David Melville Wingrove

On this episode of the podcast, host Dr Pasquale Iannone explores the little-known early films of one of the most influential filmmakers of all time, German director Douglas Sirk. Sirk is synonymous with one particular genre. His most famous films, such as Magnificent Obsession (1954), All That Heaven Allows (1955), Written on the Wind (1956) and Imitation of Life (1959) are glossy, luxurious Technicolor melodramas which would go on to inspire the likes of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Todd Haynes and many others. But there is more to Sirk than melodrama - he made war films, crime movies, historical dramas and comedies in a career spanning over 25 years and several countries. Earlier this year, Eureka Entertainment released a box set titled Sirk in Germany (1934 - 1935), a collection which takes us all the way back to the beginning of Sirk's film career. The set includes beautiful restorations of his first three features as well as several short films, all of which were made in the early years of the Nazi regime. Alongside bonus material from noted film historians Sheldon Hall and Tim Bergfelder, there are three audio commentaries from the University of Edinburgh's very own David Melville Wingrove. David is a Teaching Fellow at the University's Centre for Open Learning where he teaches hugely popular courses on both film and literature, specialising in dark and fantastical themes and styles. He is also a prolific writer, regularly contributing to publications such as Senses of Cinema. David and Pasquale discuss Sirk's first short film Two Greyhounds (1934) and his first feature April! April! (1935), both light comedies centring on mistaken identity which skewer - mostly with affection - the mores of the German middle class. David helps to place the films in historical context and he also tells Pasquale why Sirk, who was very much one of the leading lights of the German theatre in the late 20s and early 30s, decided to make the move into filmmaking.

We conclude our Camp Cinema season with our eighth episode covering Johnny Guitar (1954) and Imitation of Life (1959).In our finale, we delve into the origins of Camp Cinema in the 1950s, spotlighting Nicholas Ray's flamboyant western Johnny Guitar and Douglas Sirk's melodramatic Imitation of Life. Johnny Guitar subverts the traditional male bravado typical of most westerns by pitting two powerful women against each other. The visual artistry of Ray and his cinematographer, Harry Stradling, reveals the campy essense of the film with a rich palette of canary yellows, baked terra cottas, and deep azures. Imitation of Life achieves a similar feat, but with emotional resonance rather than visual flair. During our 1950s season, we explored Todd Haynes' commendable Douglas Sirk hommage, Far From Heaven. But nothing compares to the authentic touch of Sirk himself. Sirk masterfully understood cinema's power over an audience, manipulating emotions with precision in Imitation of Life. Its finale is one of the most emotionally explosive moments ever captured on celluloid. Camp manifest is many forms. Here we have two films that seem diametrically opposed in genre, but both use camp to full effect to elicit a deep response.

In the third episode of our Set in the 1950s cycle, we compare two hommages to the post war decade: Todd Haynes' Far from Heaven and Frank Darabont's The Majestic.Special guests: Brian Eggert from Deep Focus Reviews, Rotten Tomato Approved and frequent KARE 11 guest film critic What started out as a random pairing of two 1950s period pieces from the early Aughts became a rather interesting juxtaposition on the potency and fugility of worshiping art from the past. Far From Heaven was born from a love and respect for Douglas Sirk's fifties melodramas, and The Majestic has Frank Darabont donning his best Capra impression. While both films have inherited riches from the past, their contemporary narratives tend to sizzle instead of sparkle. Far From Heaven is beautifully shot and acted with an intricate and immaculate product design. But we wonder if there is anything happening beyond a Sirk lovefest. The Majestic has a prefab Americana store of redemption that is instantly gripping. But while the trim looks polished and proper, the rooms feel empty. Both films demonstrate how hommage can result is both a dissonant feedback loop as well as an illuminating ouroboros. After and during his rise to stardom with the help of Douglas Sirk, Hudson was also being tried out as Universal's hottest new leading man. While Rock was given opportunities to play the swoon-worthy romantic lead with Sirk, a handful of other directors were making him the headlining "every-man" of their films, with very mixed success. This week, we cover the top (there's really just one) and the bottoms of this period of his career spanning 7 films from 1952-1961: The Lawless Breed (Raoul Walsh, 1952), Giant (George Stevens, 1956), A Farewell to Arms (Charles Vidor, 1957), Something of Value (Richard Brooks, 1957), Twilight for the Gods (Joseph Pevney, 1958), The Earth is Mine (Henry King, 1959), and The Last Sunset (Robert Aldrich, 1961). While most of these movies are scraping the bottom of the classic Hollywood barrel, Giant stands out as a true triumph of film-making and an example of Hudson's star power being used correctly. Why did Universal put Hudson in so many movies? How might his whirlwind marriage with a producer's secretary have impacted his image? Did Hudson almost certainly sleep with Sal Mineo? To begin, we start with the phase of Hudson's career that flung him into stardom and made him a household name, his collaborations with director Douglas Sirk. Sirk today is synonymous with 50s melodrama, those saccharine, romantic "women's pictures" that we know and love today. Though not as critically-acclaimed in his time as he is today, Sirk's films still were hits at the box office, and his decision to bring Hudson out of the background and into his turn as a leading man. Thanks to Sirk, every man wanted to be Rock Hudson, and every woman wanted to be with him...and as it turns out, lots of men did too! Join Jake and Kevin this week as we take a look back at the 8 films of the Sirk-Hudson collaboration: Has Anyone Seen My Gal? (1952); Taza, Son of Cochise (1954); Magnificent Obsession (1954); Captain Lightfoot (1955); All That Heaven Allows (1955); Written on the Wind (1956); Battle Hymn (1957); and Tarnished Angels (1957). They might not all be hits, but we're pretty obsessed with a few of them, and hope you find some new favorites in this first part of the series!

In Part 2 of our look at The German Sirk, the director discovers "cinematic values" with two unhinged melodramas that place a strong emphasis on music, Schlußakkord (Final Chord/Final Accord), from 1936, and La Habanera, from 1937. We dig into a couple of Sirk's complicated "villains" in these movies about extra-marital love triangles, and discuss La Habanera's Nazi propaganda overtones and the ways in which the film possibly subverts them. Our Special Subject for August is also our first look at German filmmaking under the Nazis, with two mid-1930s films by left-wing director and future Hollywood auteur Douglas Sirk: The Girl from the Marsh Croft, based on the novel by Selma Lagerlöf, and Pillars of Society, based on the play by Henrik Ibsen. In Far From Heaven, Todd Haynes pays loving homage to sumptuous 1950's Douglas Sirk melodramas. This movie is actually more ambitious than anything Sirk ever did though. Haynes tackles multiple controversies in his "Issues Film", including closeted homosexuality and romance between a black man & a white woman. The actors---especially Julianne Moore---are excellent. Moore, Dennis Quaid and Dennis Haysbert play it very close to the chest and they make their director's deliberately phony-sounding dialogue come across as true and accurate. These characters have three-dimensions and many shades of grey and they all get hurt by the way society was back then...and in some ways still is. Incidentally, we neglected to mention that Haynes himself is gay. We also skated over the horrible act of conversion therapy, which no one should have ever had to go through. And we didn't make the connection that Moore played ANOTHER desperately suppressed '50s housewife in her other 2002 Oscar nomination (The Hours).
