More than 40 years after her death, the legend of Maria Callas, "La Divina Assoluta," remains unsurpassed. Much has been written about her sensational opera career and fraught private life, from her definitive mastery of iconic opera roles to her love affairs and tantrums. The prototype for the 20th century celebrity diva, Callas emblematizes the cliche of tormented talent - genius in the ring with catastrophe. Her extraordinary voice, in particular, has become an object of cult-like adoration and cultural significance almost with a life of its own: as fetish object, as sophisticated sonic signifier, and most recently, as the lifeblood for a Callas hologram. Such adoration is not without consequences. When Callas is transformed into a vessel for such transcendent magic, it overshadows what is perhaps her most superhuman ability - the masterful technique she deployed to shape and craft her astounding instrument. Singing bodies are working bodies, enacting an intimate and complex form of artistic labor and cultural signification. Using one of Callas's first recital recordings from 1954, Maria Callas's Lyric and Coloratura Arias (Bloomsbury, 2021) envisions each aria as a lens to examine various aspects of vocalization and cultural reception of the feminized voice in both classical and pop culture, from Homer's Sirens to Star Trek. With references to works by Marina Abramovic, Charles Baudelaire, Michel Chion, Wayne Koestenbaum, Greil Marcus, and Farah Jasmine Griffin, as well as films by Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jonathan Demme, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, each chapter explores phenomena unique to the singing voice, including the operatic screaming point, the politics of listening, and the singing simulacrum. I haven’t yet had a chance to talk about New German Cinema on Eros + Massacre, though episodes on Rainer Werner Fassbinder and key figures from his group of collaborators have been high on my list. I could never pick a single favorite director, but Fassbinder is at least in the top five. And Kurt Raab—the actor, set designer, art director, screenwriter, and producer who was among Fassbinder’s most loyal, brilliant, and beleaguered collaborators—is among my favorite Germans to ever exist, so it seemed like a good idea to start with him. Film programmer and projectionist Adrianna Gober is the only person I know who loves Raab as much as I do, and we’ve been planning this episode for… years now. We decided to focus on three of Raab’s films, though we do give a lengthy intro about Fassbinder himself and how he set the creative tone for much of Raab’s career. First up is Tenderness of the Wolves (1973), a bleak serial killer thriller officially directed by Ulli Lommel, but it’s essentially a collaborative effort between Lommel and Raab, made with Fassbinder’s assistance. The center piece of the episode is Fassbinder’s Bolwieser aka The Stationmaster’s Wife (1977), a two-part made for TV series that has primarily been available in a truncated, feature-length version. A kind Discord user tracked down the complete version for us, not knowing we had already recorded, but we HAD TO go back and say more. And we end with a shorter discussion about Barbet Schroeder’s Cheaters (1984), a gambling drama with one of Raab’s wildest character actor roles. If you have trouble locating The Stationamaster’s Wife, you should be able to download it here. You can find Adrianna at the Gap Theater in Wind Gap, PA, which has some truly incredible programming, tons of 35mm screenings, and some of the best programmers working on the East Coast. If you’ve ever heard me wax poetic about Harry Guerro from Exhumed Films, this theater is one of his many labors of love and is an easy drive from the Mahoning Drive In (and is about two hours from both Philadelphia and NYC). I am a bad person and still have not yet been there, but it’s on my list of resolutions for this spring!

Today in Milan, Jil Sander Creative Director Simone Bellotti will show his second collection. Two weeks out from the show he was in New York – not to finalize the collection, which he says was largely locked a month ago, but to introduce the brand's new campaign alongside model Guinevere van Seenus. Van Seenus opened Bellotti's debut show and was the star of the Craig McDean campaigns that defined Jil Sander in the nineties. He's looking back on those days as he prepares for the new collection.“It's a brand that you really have to study,” he told Nicole Phelps. For fall, Bellotti's mood board is organized around the idea of home—not as sanctuary, but as something more ambivalent. He's been watching Rainer Werner Fassbinder films and exploring the way the director used interiors to create tension and unease, to make the familiar feel threatening. He's also shifting his approach for the new collection: where his first show was about reduction, this one is about addition. “I love this idea of contradiction,” he said. Jil Sander once described the mood of her collections like a “clear glass of water” or a “glass of red wine.” When asked to describe the mood of his fall collection: Bellotti didn't miss a beat: it's the olive in a martini. “It's this extra thing that is apparently superfluous,” he said, “But it makes the cocktail perfect.” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

In this episode, I talk about Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 1972 film, "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant." The film tells the story of Petra, a successful fashion designer in a complicated and obsessive relationship with a younger woman named Karin. Set almost entirely in Petra's apartment, the film unravels the entanglements of power, desire, and emotional dependency. This episode is one of my most personal. I reflect on the ways the film mirrors an experience I had with unrequited love—an experience that consumed me for over two years. I talk about the madness and chaos of desire, the pain of not being chosen, and the way obsession can distort how we see ourselves and others.Note: This episode was recorded before my mother's death. Welcome to another episode of the Holmes Movies Podcast!Anders and Adam Holmes reunite after a long 2 month hiatus to pay tribute to a Hollywood legend. A fantastic actor and director, who also did a lot for social and human rights. The great Robert Redford passed away on the 16th of September 2025 at his home in Sundance, Utah. He was 89 years old. Born August 18th 1936, Robert Redford's career began in New York City where he worked on stage and on television. His numerous early acting credits were on TV shows like The Twilight Zone, The Untouchables, Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His early credits in film were Tall Story and The Chase, his first collaboration with Jane Fonda. After being cast along side Paul Newman in the George Roy Hill western, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, did Redford become a bankable actor. His career took off in the 70s. Some of his most memorable roles were in films like All The President's Men, Jeremiah Johnson, The Candidate, 3 Days of The Condor, The Sting and The Way We Were. In the beginning of the 80s, Redford transitioned to directing as well as acting. He won an Oscar for Best Directing for his work on Ordinary People, starring Donald Sutherland, Timothy Hutton and Mary Tyler Moore. With the proceeds he received from his acting career, Robert Redford purchased a block of land in Utah that he named Sundance, after his character in Butch Cassidy. Redford went onto to create the Sundance Institute and out of that came the Sundance Film Festival. This festival was created in a way to foster new and exciting cinematic voices. A new generation of filmmakers. Aside from his film work, Redford fought and campaigned for LGBT rights, Native American rights and climate change. An actor, director, environmentalist and activist all rolled into one.A tremendous individual who did a lot for the film industry. There will never be another man like him. He will be missed. Rest in peace Mister Redford. Hope somewhere you and Paul Newman have finally reunited. We hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast.

After examining Robert Kramer's Ice (1970) fictionalize America in our last episode, we shift to West Germany to explore another cinematic portrayal of resistance to fascism in Rainer Werner Fassbinder's The Third Generation (1979). Set against West Germany's postwar society, Fassbinder sharply exposes how insincere revolutionary acts can become hollow gestures, exploited to justify expanded state control and surveillance. Though rooted in 1979, the film eerily anticipates our contemporary world: a society numbed by constant surveillance, manipulated by capitalist tech moguls profiting from manufactured crises, and how citizens are caught in a struggle against the technocratic elites. Additionally, Fassbinder's overwhelming audio landscape mimics the relentless noise of the modern internet, capturing the exhaustion and confusion of today's digital age. Drawing connections to our episodes that covered Uptight (1968), Children of Men (2006), and How to Blow Up a Pipeline (2022), we ask: what does resistance look like when liberal democracy itself seems to pave the road to authoritarianism? Fassbinder's vision resonates with our current dark historical moment, where our capacity to imagine alternatives is shrinking, and the internet serves as both a battlefield and a drain on the soul.  Follow us at: Patreon / Instagram / Letterboxd / Facebook

Last year, the Pink Smoke Podcast created a series called 1974: 50 Years Later, each episode featuring a different guest who chose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. But since all our guests are cool outsiders with eccentric tastes, most of them stayed away from the most iconic movies of that fabled cinematic year, eschewing The Godfather Part II in favor of forgotten TV movies and experimental horror films. While that was just fine with us, we decided it might be a good idea to back up and cover some of the acknowledged classics of 1974, starting with Rainer Werner Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul. The first of four projects released by the ultra-prolific auteur (two theatrical, two for TV), Ali tells the tale of a 60-year-old window cleaner who falls in love with a Moroccan Gastarbeiter half her age, much to the disapproval of their contemporaries. One of the enfant terrible's more gentle movies, it's still populated by his lovably repellent characters in whom Fassbinder seeks to excavate some humanity in a miserable post-war West German society. We discuss the director's destructive creativity, how his worldview is more complicated than those of directors with whom he's often connected (Douglas Sirk and Ken Loach fans maybe give this one a miss) and how his most endearing and connective theme is loneliness.

Stylisten Ursula Wångander tittar på Wong Kar-wais In the Mood for Love och drömmer om filmens klänningar.

Ian Fleishman develops the concept of failed passing in his new book Flamboyant Fictions, which reimagines free will in queer lives as an accidental affirmation of identity despite efforts towards adherence to standards and norms. In this, he works with his predecessors in queer theory like Judith Butler, José Muñoz, Leo Barsani, Lee Edelman and others. In our conversation, Ian also gives us a glimpse of his readings of failed passing in widely varying texts such as the works of André Gide and Jean Genet and the films of Luchino Visconti, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Werner Schroeter, Todd Haynes, François Ozon, and Xavier Dolan, to the music and public persona of Shawn Mendes and Troye Sivan. Ian Fleishman is the inaugural Chair of the Department of Cinema & Media Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of Flamboyant Fictions: The Failed Art of Passing (Northwestern 2024). His previous books are An Aesthetics of Injury: The Narrative Wound from Baudelaire to Tarantino (Northwestern 2018) and Performative Opacity in the Work of Isabelle Hupert (Edinburgh 2023), co-edited with Iggy Cortez. Dive into a neon-drenched dystopia as Mike is joined by Chris Stachiw and Heather Drain to dissect Kamikaze 89! This cult oddity, directed by Wolf Grem, is the fifth adaptation of Per Wahlöö's Murder on the 31st Floor, but this version catapults the narrative into the "futuristic" world of 1989. Together, the team explores the film's avant-garde aesthetic, its sly satire on media and power, and the iconic performance of Rainer Werner Fassbinder in a leopard-print suit. It's a wild ride through West German sci-fi that defies convention and genre.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.
