Important Tax Considerations for Newlyweds Episode 365 – Have you gotten married recently? The next steps are considerably less exciting. There are some important financial steps you need to take. More SML Planning Minute Podcast Episodes Transcript of Podcast Episode 365 Hello, this is Bill Rainaldi, with another edition of Security Mutual's SML Planning Minute. In today's episode, some important tax considerations for newlyweds. So, congrats on your recent marriage. If you're like most people, your wedding probably involved a significant amount of planning and detail: where, when, who to invite, who not to invite, where to seat everybody, etc. You may be glad you to get through such an important life-changing event, and you're ready to move on with the rest of your life. But you're not done quite yet. There are a number of financial details you may need to address. Here are just a few of them: Name change. If there is a name change involved, you'll need to report it to the Social Security Administration (SSA). When you file your next tax return, the name on that return needs to match what the SSA has on file. The Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, recommends that you file a new Form SS-5, Application for a Social Security Card, which is available at SSA.gov.[1] Update your address. Make sure you let the IRS, the Postal Service, and your employer know about any address change. Coordinate your benefits. You might now have access to a better—or cheaper—health insurance plan.[2] You'll need to look things over with your new spouse. Decide on your new filing status. Once you're married, you can choose to file jointly or separately each year. While the IRS says that filing jointly is usually less expensive, they recommend that you calculate it both ways before you decide. Also, it doesn't really matter what day you got married. Even if it's on New Year's Eve, the rules state that for tax purposes, you're considered married for the entire year.[3] Married filing separately. Once they're married, few people elect to file their income taxes separately. This is because it usually results in the highest combined taxes. But some people do this anyway because the individual filing the return is the only one liable for any tax bills and errors on that return. It also happens when the two spouses decide, for whatever reason, that they would prefer to only be responsible for their own taxes.[4] Marriage penalty. The so-called “marriage penalty” occurs when a married couple ends up paying more income taxes than they would have had they remained single. This becomes more likely when both of you have high earnings and close to the same income. On the other hand, if you and your spouse are at different income levels, odds are that there will actually be a marriage bonus, that is, the tax on your joint income will be less than it would be had you filed separately.[5] Standard deduction. Nowadays, only about 10 percent of taxpayers itemize their deductions.[6] The rest use the standard deduction. For 2026, the standard deduction is $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $16,100 for single taxpayers. These figures were adjusted as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill passed in July of 2025. On some occasions, getting married can have an impact on whether you itemize or not. Previous debts. If your new spouse owes money for previous taxes or child support, any future joint tax refund could be reduced as a result.[7] Separate homes. If you own two separate houses, it's likely that you'll be selling one of them when you get married. And if you're selling at a gain, you may get extra benefits from being married. Once you're married, you get an addition to the amount of tax-free gain you can take. The amount is $250,000 for single taxpayers, but $500,000 for married taxpayers. The rules are a bit tricky, though, and you need to make sure you meet all the qualifications.[8] Beneficiary and Will Review. This one may or may not result in tax consequences, but it is important to note. When getting married, it's critical for each spouse to review any existing wills, plans or benefits (such as life insurance) that assigned a beneficiary or beneficiaries. Unless restricted by a court order, it's usually preferable for the new spouse to be assigned as beneficiary in each of those examples. So be sure not to overlook this step in the process and make any required changes when getting married. Getting married represents a big change for just about anybody, and not just in your personal life. Your financial life is also likely to be affected in a number of different ways. But as long as you know what to expect, the additional stress involved should be manageable. Let the fun begin! Understanding the H2A Process/Program Shay Foulk – Ag View Solutons, Profit Manager Pre-RollAround the room solo introductionKeep sending those ideas to farm4profitllc@gmail.com or find us all over social media. We greatly appreciate YOUR help in growing our audience.Topic for the day – Labor is getting harder to find, could using the H2A program be the solution for you?John Deere Mid-Roll Commercial Introduce Guests:Bio #1Bio#2 What is H2A?The H-2A temporary agricultural program allows agricultural employers who anticipate a shortage of domestic workers to bring nonimmigrant foreign workers to the U.S. to perform agricultural labor or services of a temporary or seasonal nature. What does it take to qualify for the H-2A Program?a business's need for workers must:• be agricultural in nature,• not involve processing a commodity from its raw state into an altered state (e.g., canning), and• be temporary (generally less than ten months long). The business must also be able to prove that it is unable to find qualified American workers for open job positions—and that hiring H-2A workers will not put American workers at a disadvantage. The ProcessPre-Filing – The government requires a lot of information from you before it will grant you a Temporary Labor Certification.2. SWA – We then submit your Application, on your behalf, to your local State Workforce Agency (SWA).3. DOL – We then submit, on your behalf, the approved Application, along with additional information and documentation, to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).4. Advertising – The DOL then posts the details of the job on seasonaljobs.dol.gov. The process then pauses for about a week5. USCIS – We generate a Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker and submit it, on your behalf, If you are trying to hire workers who are outside of the country, the USCIS sends the visa petitions to the applicable consulate. The workers then go to the consulate and undergoan interview.TimeframesIn general, the whole process, from application to worker arrival, takes about 90 days. When Should You Apply?H-2A regulations only allow employers to submit Applications for Temporary Labor Certification 60-75 days before the date on which they need workers to arrive.During the application process, you will choose a start and end date (your Period of Need) for the workers. These dates should reflect your need for workers as accurately as possible. How Many Workers Should You Request? As with your period of need, the number of workers you request certification to hire must accurately reflect your actual needs.Employers should never request more workers than they expect they will need.If You Need Workers at Different Times of the Year, you may be able to submit multiple applications and obtain certification to hire workers during each period. If the two or more periods are related but do not, together, cover more than 10 months of the year, you can usually submit multiple applications—one for each period.Give an ExampleEmployer ObligationsProvide workers (H-2A and American) with work contracts orcopies of the Approved Job Order (ETA Form 790).Reimburse workers for their transportation and subsistence expenses within the first pay period, including:o the Consulate Fee of $190,o the round-trip plane tickets, ando subsistence costs, including food, lodging, and fuel costs• Help the workers get everything they need upon arrival, including:o a driver's license/CDL (if required for the job),o a Social Security Card, ando a bank account.• Give the workers what they need for the job, including:o free housing that meets OSHA or ETA standards, depending on when it was built,o free transportation to and from the worksite every day and to the grocery store once a week, ando any required tools, safety gear, including a means of two-way communication (e.g., a cell phone).• Ensure all H-2A workers are covered by Worker's Compensation at all worksites for the entire contract period.• Pay workers, at a minimum, the state minimum wage, the federal minimum wage, the prevailing wage, or your state's Adverse Effect Wage Rate (as published by the Department of Labor), whichever is the highest.• Pay workers at least twice per month. • Provide each worker with a pay slip at the end of every pay period. You can find a pay slip template with all the required fields on our database. • If your state requires it, pay workers the time-and-a-half rate for overtime. In most states, H-2A workers are exempt from overtime. However, some states, like California and Minnesota, require employers to pay the overtime rate if workers work more than a set number of hours.• Never take deductions from a worker's paycheck, except as required by law (e.g., taxes, if applicable) or as specified on your Application for Temporary Labor Certification.• If you have American workers performing the same duties as H-2A workers, pay them at least the same wage rate and offer them the same benefits. Meal ArrangementsEmployers are partially responsible for worker meals. Employers must choose and adhere to one of the following options for the duration of the work period:• Option 1: You provide three meals a day for each worker. In this case, you may charge each worker (or deduct from their pay) the daily rate set by the Department of Labor for the provided food. This rate changes periodically. You can find the current rate on the DOL's website or by contacting us.• Option 2: You furnish free and convenient cooking and kitchen facilities for workers to prepare their own meals and provide them with free transportation once a week to purchase groceries. Three-Quarter RuleThe Three-Quarter rule requires you to guarantee a worker employment and payment for at least 3⁄4 of the work hours in the contract period. What are some best practices you have seen successful farms using? Can you share labor with a neighboring farmer? What types of penalties exist if you don't follow the rules? Are the rules subject to change with upcoming legislation? Is the program in jeopardy?Anything else we should cover? Please share contact information and any additional resources. What does Success look like to you?

In this episode of The TruthSeekah Podcast TruthSeekah speaks with Christian Rapper SA115 Samuel McCray about growing up sheltered, religion and being born at home. The internet is full of crazy conspiracy theories, rabbit holes and fictional material that can keep people busy with YouTube videos and documentaries. The end of the world,9-11, JFK assassination, flat earth, reptilians and Atlantis are just a few to name that tend to suck people in for hours and sometimes years. The subject of the end times has always been a hot topic. Every generation in recorded history has had a sect of people who were infatuated with the end of the world and believed that their generation was the last to exist before a coming destruction. For Christians this will be a glorious day for the coming of The Lord Jesus but for those for without a savior it will be the terrible and dreadful event. Most Christians are familiar with a prophecy in the Book of Revelation which says that the Antichrist will come and command everyone to receive a mark on the right hand or their forehead which is known as the mark of the beast. The prophecy says that they will not be able to buy, sell or trade without this mark. As technology advances so does the interpretations of prophecy within the Biblical texts. Where we are now many Christians believe that the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Chip is in fact the mark of the beast spoken about in The Book of Revelation. Some people are getting these little RFID Chips which can be smaller than a grain of rice implanted in their hands. These chips allow them to access their bank accounts and holds all of their dental and medical information as well. Some chips allow for Access into government buildings and restricted areas with computers that scan the chips implanted in the hand. The military also has been using RFID chips as many military have had them implanted into their biceps. This technology has been used for years by your local veterinarian clinic to track the whereabouts of your lost animals. This advancement in technology is terrifying to a lot of religious people who are already feel alienated in this world and are waiting for something catastrophic to happen. Because of this, the RFID chip fits perfectly into their end time scenario. But before the RFID chip interpretation was here many people were hysterical thinking that Social Security Card is the mark of the beast. Samuel's family fell into this category of biblical interpretation and still hold that to be true to this day. So much so that Samuel and his siblings were born Off the Grid within their childhood home without a midwife or the use of Medicine. They were never registered by the government, school and have never been to the hospital, hence, they do not have a social security card. Many radical Christians believe that the use of Medicine represents a lack of faith by other believers. If a child is sick the family rely on God as their healer and in Samuel's case his family would fast and pray for healing. Many of these Christians believe that medicine it's a form of sorcery which comes from the Greek word Pharmakeia (English pharmacy) which translates to sorcery. There's one thing about Samuel's family and his story that you cannot deny which is the fact that they stood up for what they believed in, and that goes a long way especially when it is standing for a righteous cause. I have seen many people radical in their faith which led them to do radical things and I myself have been involved with some pretty radical groups over the years as well. At the end of the day balance is key with any religious belief. The mind is a very powerful thing and if we are not careful we will find ourselves fulfilling our own end time prophecies. I do not believe that we are experiencing the end of the world or apocalyptic fantasies, but we do experience the end of our own worlds inwardly with the death of the ego and the Return of the Christ Within as He...
I do not believe that we are experiencing the end of the world or apocalyptic fantasies, but we do experience the end of our own worlds inwardly with the death of the ego and the Return of the Christ Within as He returns to rule upon the throne of our hearts. I've heard many interpretations of the Book of Revelations and all of them make sense in their own weird way. Edward Lafferty, Public Affairs Specialist for the Social Security Administration discussed the agency and its continued operations during the government shutdown and things to consider in the new year, including a review of personal finances. We first discussed important upcoming dates for registering for Medicare, the enrollment window ends in March for those eligible, without a significant life-change, the window closes until next January. He reminded us to open a My Social Security account to track our benefits and to make sure the data is correct. He noted additional benefits to the account, you can use it to order replacement cards and to contact the agency with issues. We reviewed important ages, partial benefits at 62 and full at a sliding number depending on the year you were born. He noted that if you take benefits early your total monthly payment will forever be reduced, even after you reach your full retirement age, so avoid claiming benefits for as long as possible. We discussed fraud and he warned us that the SSA will not contact you by phone unless you are already involved in a conversation, be careful with your personal information and know that you will never be contacted by phone or email if you are in a dispute with the agency. He reminded us that spoof pros will have return email addresses and area codes to look local. We discussed who is eligible for benefits, anyone who worked for a minimum of 40 credits, survivors of beneficiaries or disabled dependents. We also spoke on who CANNOT receive benefits, including undocumented or illegal immigrants, despite public assumptions. He noted however, that many Green Card workers pay into the system, as do some undocumented workers, and never claim their earned benefits. Finally, a story from the Social Security history files, this time about a wallet manufacturer in the early '30s who included a mock Social Security Card to show where you could keep this new item. Unfortunately they used the manufacturer's secretary's personal number on the cards and many buyers thought that was their card! Ed told us that the number was still being used in the 1970s! Please join us on Wednesday, October 10, for a discussion on a new CSIS report Modernizing the Social Security Number (SSN), with opening keynote remarks by Congressman Sam Johnson (R-TX). Congressman Johnson is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means where he serves as the Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee. The opening remarks will be followed by remarks by Candace Worley, Vice President and Chief Technical Strategist at McAfee, and a panel discussion. The main identity credential in the U.S. is a paper Social Security Card largely unchanged since the 1930s. The SSN serves as a starting point for confirming identity in the U.S. and is central to the U.S. economy, but it is easily stolen and not designed to work in a digital environment. Modernizing the SSN with a secure process for verifying its use would make it harder to steal and create a foundation for innovation in authentication technology. The panel will discuss the challenges in improving identity authentication systems and what initial steps can be taken to improve privacy and security. We will also discuss the issues that have arisen from using the SSN as an authenticator and explore potential models for a modernized identity system. 8:45 am—Light Refreshments 9:00 am—Opening Keynote RemarksCongressman Sam Johnson (R - TX), Chairman, Social Security Subcommittee 9:05 am—Keynote RemarksCandace Worley, Vice President and Chief Technical Strategist, McAfee, LLC 9:20 am—Panel DiscussionPaul Rosenzweig, Senior fellow, R Street InstituteNaomi Lefkovitz, Senior Privacy Policy Advisor, National Institute of Standards and TechnologyCandace Worley, Vice President and Chief Technical Strategist, McAfee, LLC Moderated byJames A.
