This week, Talking Europe is taking a closer look at how the EU hopes to bounce back from the pandemic and create jobs, this after a year of economic stasis with businesses closed, workers furloughed and job prospects curtailed. Last weekend's Social Summit in Porto outlined how the EU hopes to increase employment levels to 78 percent, reduce the number of people living in poverty by 15 million and propose training schemes for 60 percent of the European workforce, all by 2030.
This week's Talking Europe show is looking at how the EU hopes to put Social Cohesion – creating jobs, giving workers new skills, cutting poverty – at the heart of its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. That was the goal of the recent Social Summit in Porto, the first European Council dedicated to Social Affairs. Our guest is a key figure in shaping the EU's response: Nicolas Schmit, the EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights. He tells us how the Porto Social Summit demonstrates the EU's commitment to tying rebuilding the economy to the social dimension.

Just a few moments ahead of the Social Summit in Porto and long-awaited launch of the Conference of the Future of Europe, Ana Paula Zacarias, State Secretary for Europe in Portugal shares in a conversation with Dr. Ania Skrzypek, FEPS Director for Research and Training the insights of the Presidency’s strategy on how to get things done. Being humble, respecting and listening to others, while remaining constructive and setting the bar of ambition high - is how to make this super-weekend not about a quick fix, but about a promise of a better future for all.
Czech Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Jana Maláčová, and FEPS Secretary General László Andor exchange views about their expectations concerning the forthcoming Social Summit in Porto. They look back and assess the effectiveness of the social policy measures implemented by the Czech government during the COVID 19 pandemic: the so-called “antivirus programme”, financed in part by the EU, and the various subsidies to families, triggered by the closure of schools and kindergartens during the lockdowns. While keeping unemployment at a very low level, the Czech government also ensured that application for various benefits, including the unemployment benefit became easier during the pandemic, thanks to a digitalisation campaign. The minister makes the case for EU minimum wage coordination, and attributes great importance to re skilling to facilitate long-term economic convergence.

This episode presents a chronological sweep of field recordings and interviews taken in Madrid during COP25, December 2019, by our guest host Sumugan Sivanesan. It begins with the December 6 Manifestacíon in which around 500,000 people marched in the streets of Madrid, before tracing discussions at the Social Summit for the Climate (Cumbre Social por el Clima) at Complutense University and at other actions around the city. In front of the US embassy, this episode focuses on a demonstration led by Indigenous women who sang the Women’s Warrior Song, a song written by Martina Pierre from the Lil'wat First Nation that honors missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Indigenous women face the highest rates of murder and sexual assault in North America, and in Madrid the song connected these crimes to extractivist fossil fuel industries operating on unceded Indigenous lands. The montage culminates five days later with a casserolado noise demonstration outside the COP, in support of Indigenous delegates, Fridays For Future, and other civil society groups staging a demonstration inside the COP against the removal of references to Human Rights in the negotiations and widespread reports of bullying and inaction. This episode includes interviews and speeches by: ASAD REHMAN, Executive Director of War on Want VANESSA NAKATE, Founder of the Rise Up Movement NICOLE FIGUEIREDO DE OLIVEIRA, Director of 350.org in Brazil and Latin America MARTA BORDONS MARTÍNEZ, Climate activist, Fridays for Future Sevilla MOÑEKA DE ORO, member of the Micronesia Climate Alliance NIGEL HENRI ROBINSON, Denesuline organizer, radio host, and humorist from Cold Lake First Nations, Indigenous Climate Action CHIEF DANA TIZYA-TRAMM, Vuntut Gwitchen First Nation Photograph by Sumugan Sivanesan.
