This week's Pathfinder podcast features Chris Kemp, the founder and CEO of Astra, the publicly-traded launch company based out of Alameda, CA that went public via SPAC in the summer 2021. Since then, Astra's valuation has seen a dramatic decline, plummeting from a peak of approximately $4B to a mere $67M today. Chris paints a vivid picture of two contrasting narratives. On one hand, there's a satellite propulsion business, acquired through the purchase of startup Apollo Fusion, with a 278-engine backlog valued between $70M and $83M (based on an average selling price of $250-300K). This business has a distant, yet potential opportunity to secure contracts that could significantly change its trajectory. In contrast, the launch business is in jeopardy as capital evaporates. Astra's Rocket 4 must not only launch successfully but also prove its consistency to secure significant commercial deals. Many of our listeners are well-acquainted with Astra's struggles, given the numerous reports on the company's launch failures and recent wave of departures. Today, our conversation with Chris primarily focused on the future of Astra and how to think about what upside case may remain for the business. We chat: Rocket 3 vs Rocket 4: why Rocket 3 failed and the lessons applied to Rocket 4The status of commercial and government contracts The state of financing for launch companies Valuing Astra's satellite propulsion business Key lessons learned as CEO What does the future hold for Astra? And much more… • Chapters •00:00 - Introduction 00:56 - Current state of Astra 03:04 - Origins of the business model 07:26 - Key challenges today 11:49 - Rocket 4's specs 16:13 - Contracts with NASA/Space Force 17:09 - Improving reliability from Rocket 3 to 4 21:30 - Rocket 4 engines 24:24 - Importance of strategic partnerships 29:07 - Astra's manufacturing facility 30:03 - What would you have done differently? 33:25 - Bull-case for the prop business 39:15 - Current financial health 41:27 - Team construction and retention 44:10 - What is the investment case for Astra today? 47:03 - Lessons learned as CEO 49:57 - Conclusion• Show notes •Astra website — https://astra.com/Chris's socials — https://twitter.com/kempJohn Walker's "A Rocket a Day Keeps the High Costs Away" — http://www.astronautix.com/a/arocketadayhighcostsaway.htmlMo's socials — https://twitter.com/itsmoislam Payload's socials — https://twitter.com/payloadspace / https://www.linkedin.com/company/payloadspace Pathfinder archive — Watch: https://www.youtube.com/@payloadspace Pathfinder archive — Listen: https://pod.payloadspace.com/episodes • About us •Pathfinder is brought to you by Payload, a modern space media brand built from the ground up for a new age of space exploration and commercialization. Over 50 years after humans first landed on the moon, it's still extremely difficult—and expensive—to get anything into orbit. But imagine if there were a more affordable way to give scientists and entrepreneurs access to space. We could develop more efficient agriculture to feed people more affordably and sustainably, or more closely monitor the evolution of dangerous storm patterns to save lives. The company Astra is on a mission to do just that, by creating a lower-cost platform that offers smaller, more frequent launches to get satellites into space. We sat down with Astra co-founder and CEO Chris Kemp to learn more about how his teams collaborate on the immense technical challenges involved, and how design is playing an increasingly important role as traditional control room roles become automated. Chris has an impressive background, from founding 3 companies to being the CTO of NASA, and we dive into the arc of his career, the lessons he has learned in leading people, and how he communicates mission and vision to his teams. Bio Chris is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Astra. Previously, Chris founded several tech start-ups and served as the Chief Technology Officer of NASA, where he introduced new technologies into America's space program and founded OpenStack, the largest and fastest-growing open-source project in history. While at NASA, Chris worked at the White House to develop the cloud strategy for the United States. Chris has been recognized in the Silicon Valley Business Journal "40 under 40," the CNBC Disruptor 50 list, and received the prestigious "Federal 100" award for his service at NASA.

Ducky and Funkiman's tale begins with a casual chat with Seattle lyricist Cory Tate fka Ripynt.  After catching up Cory discusses collaborating with French producers like Arom, and we parley down la ruelle de musique française.  Pivoting into an initial dive about the innovative growth of Seattle hip-hop, and Cory's favorite up & coming local artist.  A benign observation leads to the discovery of the unintended 90's feel of "A Tale of Two Towers" (Tate's 2nd EP under that moniker) leading us to memories of Space Mountain, and a multiverse of Marvel madness. Tune in next episode for Part 2 of Cory Tate - A Tale of Two Interviews.  In the meantime be sure to check out Cory Tate, Arom, and their new album on Spotify.    https://open.spotify.com/artist/3wYZexgmCj6BfDdIsjme9Z?si=YLddN_dVRcqEAwx9Iy9azA&dl_branch=1https://open.spotify.com/artist/3tSdtYFi3RLZHZEglhwBkS?si=ZaetF8tQT8e-_Oa5WIBXZA&dl_branch=1https://open.spotify.com/album/29kIH5EUu6YXDUXxT0kTzz?si=Ut0-N7neST2SZcaEwOPHgA&dl_branch=1

Maine-born and raised singer-songwriter Chris Kemp White has been making music in and around Portland for more than twenty years. After performing almost exclusively with bands––HausCats, An Overnight Low, Andy Happel, Hotel Arrival and The Frotus Caper, to name a few––he is currently writing, arranging and recording solo material. Drawing from classic and modern influences like David Bowie, Crowded House, Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie, the songs explore both spiritual and everyday themes of love, loss and longing. Josh Rogers of the Portland Phoenix writes, “White’s got a knack for poetry, elevating the quality of his lyrics with inventive phrasing and word choice.” Chris performs solo around Maine, sharing acoustic arrangements of original music and rearrangements of popular songs from the 60s to present. He released his first, self-titled, CD in June, 2016, then a 2-song record in partnership with boutique record label Leesta Vall later that year. Since summer 2018, Chris has been digitally releasing his song, making them available on iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, and other streaming formats. His latest song, “(They Can’t) Undo This Love” can be heard on 98.9 WCLZ, Frank FM, and 106.3 The Bone. He also plays bass and sings backing vocals with Portland cover band HausCats. In spring of 2018, after teaching middle and high school social studies for 6 years, Chris changed careers to pursue music and carpentry full time. White balances his love of music with career and family. Above all, Chris cherishes time with his wife, Rachel, two children, Arran and Alice, and their dog, Ida.

Joining the Event Industry News podcast this week is Dr Chris Kemp, who specialises in human movement and has a PhD in cognitive psychology. Back in January, Chris organised a focus group comprising 43 European Festivals and a group of 14-16 year old festival goers who got together to identify how in-touch the events were with their younger customers. The session highlighted an alarming number of areas where the festivals were described by Chris as being ‘on a different planet’ when it came to providing and understanding their customer needs. In the podcast we ask whether organisers really know the best way to communicate with their younger audience members, and should they be seeking more guidance from their audiences in order to shape their operations? In the episode, Chris highlights some of the key concerns raised by the young people during the focus group, and what he thinks organisers could and should be doing to improve the festival experience for younger audience members.
