In this episode, Lisa breaks down the explosive Minnesota fraud scandal involving federal child nutrition funds, she is joined by former federal prosecutor Joe Teirab who examines how millions of taxpayer dollars were misused through weak oversight and regulatory failures. The conversation exposes how easily the system was exploited, the role of political actors and government agencies, and why accountability mechanisms failed to stop the fraud sooner. Lisa and Joe also explore ongoing efforts to recover stolen funds, disturbing links between fraud proceeds and terrorist financing, and the broader national implications—raising serious questions about whether similar schemes could be unfolding in other states. With taxpayers left footing the bill, this episode highlights the urgent need for government reform, stricter oversight, and real consequences to prevent future abuse of federal aid programs.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last week, President Trump attacked Somali immigrants in the nation during a Cabinet meeting, calling them “garbage” and saying that he didn’t want them in the U.S. Meanwhile, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is ramping up its activity in the Minneapolis metro area in Minnesota. That state is home to nearly 80,000 people of Somali descent, the largest such population in the nation. In Oregon, there are roughly 12 to 15,000 people of Somali descent, most of whom live in Multnomah County, according to a 2016 county report. Musse Olol emigrated from Somalia to Oregon in 1981 and is the executive director of the Somali American Council of Oregon, which he co-founded in 2011. He says fear has gripped Somalis living in the Portland metro area, even among naturalized U.S. citizens such as himself. He joins us to share his perspective and the heightened tension within the local Somali community.

A survey from that time also showed growing support for the Republican party.Since President Donald Trump's recent xenophobic comments, Fiqy has shared that he can no longer support the party. Salman Fiqy spoke with host Nina Moini more about his decision.

At a news conference today KSTP-TV's Tom Hauser asked Rep. Ilhan Omar about the perception that the Somali community has been significantly involved in the state's fraud problem - a question she called racist. Is it?
How much of a problem is fraud coming specifically from within the Somali population? Andy Luger gives us great insight and knowledge of how some fraud is certainly coming from Somali residents, but it does not reflect the greater Somali community within the state.

It was a shocking attack which still has implications today: in September 2013 fighters from the Somalia-based al-Shabab militant group burst into the Westgate mall in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi – taking control of the building for the next four days. At the end of the siege, 67 people were dead, with almost 200 wounded. So what impact did it have on relationships between different Kenyan communities? And why has it led many Somalis in Kenya to rethink their culture of hospitality?
