If full frame camera prices come down (to an "affordable" level) you might ask "Do we even NEED Micro Four Thirds any more?" In this episode I'll cover the reasons I think it's good to keep BOTH systems (if you have full frame already, the cost of adding Micro Four Thirds isn't a barrier, and if you have Micro Four Thirds, full frame is getting close!) P.S. I mentioned current pricing of the Sony A7rii, but said A7ii…but I DO NOT RECOMMEND the A7ii for video purposes (but the A7rii might be a possibility, as long as you're good with shooting in the cropped Super 35 mode, because the 4K is good in that mode, but not in full frame mode). Also, after some testing, I no longer recommend DSLRs (such as the Canon 6d which I mentioned) because they don't work well LIVE with HDMI switchers, such as the ATEM Mini, etc.
“I somehow see Plexus as a portrait project – a portrait of what has faded, and what is still lingering,” explains photographer Elena Helfrecht. “Maybe it can be seen as a sort of conjuring.” I originally poured over the images in Plexus on a mobile phone, and realized I wasn't doing her work justice. When I looked at Plexus on my iMac, I had a completely different experience. I immediately thought of the Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, and more of the found-footage horror movies that dominated my younger years. That's where I became enamored with the series. You can view this article and much more with minimal banner ads in our brand new app for iOS, iPadOS, and Android. And for $24.99/year, you can have a banner ad-free experience. I think Plexus is not a series that belongs in print. To be honest, I think that would ruin the series. It belongs on your screen in dark mode, with you staring at the photos. When you peer into the work, you can almost feel its moving elements. Combine this with the fact that Plexus explores generational trauma, and you've got a recipe for a cinematic piece of photographic work. Personally, I'm also a huge fan of the direct flash, no Photoshop or post-production, and the use of black and white. The Essential Camera Gear of Elena Helfrecht Sony a7r II Flash I am mostly working digitally, as this allows me to experiment with the utmost flexibility, and without material (and financial) restrictions. My main tool is a Sony A7RII, which I chose first and foremost because of its capabilities to work in low light. Phoblographer: It looks like you've used a lot of direct flash. How did this help you express yourself creatively? Elena Helfrecht: The beauty of flash is its ability to highlight forms and structures and to blacken out the background. This often helps me to elevate the subject I had in mind. Since one overarching concept of the project is the visualization of psychological structures, and the exploration of how they are connected through different times and international contexts, the materials of the photographed subjects become a symbol for these aspects. Flash, together with the reduction of color, even them out and make them appear as one fabric. Phoblographer: How much Photoshop was used in this project? Was most of it created in-camera? Elena Helfrecht: While I always work on contrasts, lighting, and minor retouching, the whole project was created in-camera. “The beauty of flash is its ability to highlight forms and structures and to blacken out the background. This often helps me to elevate the subject I had in mind.” Phoblographer: A lot of your work is in black and white. What do you feel it does for your creativity? Elena Helfrecht: A reduction of colors emphasizes form and structure, and it breaks down the image, so only the essentials are left. In turn, the image becomes more abstract and the eye is guided towards shapes and textures, which often helps to materialize the vision I had in mind. Recently, colors frequently seem more and more like a distraction to me. If I use color, it has to be for a very specific, often symbolic, reason. Phoblographer: What photographers have influenced you? How have they done so? Elena Helfrecht: It's not only photography that influences my work, but my roots actually lie in art history. I think Symbolism and Romanticism have influenced me a lot. And then there is literature and movies, too. Some photographers I adore are Joel-Peter Witkin, Roger Ballen, George Shiras, Frederick Sommer, Annegret Soltau, and Francesca Woodman, for example. I believe we are constantly influenced by what we see and experience. Phoblographer: Almost all of these images were shot in portrait orientation. How does that help viewers understand what you're conveying in the images? Was that a purposeful creative decision? Elena Helfrecht: I somehow see Plexus as a portrait project – a portrait of what has faded, and what is still lingering. Maybe it can be see...
Preparing for a photo trip has its own level of enjoyment. Picking out the gear, thinking about locations, and the growing anticipation of photographing a new place, or even a familiar favorite, I like the build-up to the actual trip. It's fun.In a few short weeks, I will be on the Oregon Coast for some photography. In addition to the gear choices and virtual location scouting, I am doing something a little different. I am thinking about what ideas and feelings I can explore through photography on this trip. I talked about this concept in Episode 84.Feelings the Pacific Northwest elicits for me include the power of the ocean and where things meet. I am visiting in November, and want to explore the concept of the off-season. In this podcast, I share thoughts about these theme-based concepts and how they might affect the locations I choose to visit. I also discuss the gear I will bring on the trip - I'm always asked!.I hope you enjoy it and that it sparks some ideas for you when you prepare for your next photo trip.Gear mentioned in this episode:Camera bodies: Sony A7Rii, Sony A6400Lenses: Sony 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS, Sony 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS, Sony 20mm F/1.8 G, Sony 70-200mm F4 OSSB-Roll cameras: Sony RX0, DJI Osmo PocketFilters: Haida M10 filter systemAll of Scott's gear is here: https://scottdavenportphoto.com/gear.Rate & ReviewIf you enjoyed this episode, please rate at review it on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser.com. The contents of our camera bag are rarely static. The gear we carry evolves as we continue our pursuit of photography. And therein lies a story. The camera bodies, lenses, filters, and tripod we add, change, and remove from our photo kits tell our story as artists. In today's podcast, I take a closer look at the changes in my photo kit over the past five years and share what it reveals about my journey to date as a photographer. The notable revelations in my kit changes are:For my still photography, the gear I use to capturing stills has had little change. The most important upgrade is a switch to a modular filter system - I use the Haida M10 filter system now. Yes, my camera body got an upgrade, yet I'm still using 4+-year-old Sony A7Rii cameras. And my lenses … they haven't changed at all.The foray into videography is what's fueled the change in my photo kit. Capturing behind-the-scenes footage for YouTube has changed very little. The That in turn reveals something else. The improvement in my stills has been outside of the technical space. It's been learning to see better, understanding light, getting better at composition. The filter upgrade has given a boost to my long exposure work. Yet the cameras and lenses I own continue to serve me well. While there are sharper lenses and newer camera bodies out there, they are not (yet) the limiters on my photography.Interestingly, the foray into video has had a positive impact for my still photography work. Part of capturing behind-the-scenes video is thinking about the different angles, establishing shots, B-roll, supplemental footage … all the things that make a video more engaging. That's spilled over into my still work in the form of a group of photos from a given outing, instead of the singular composition I'd chase in my past. So, examine your photo kit. What's changed? What's stayed the same? And why do you think that is? What changes have fueled your creativity and improved your artistry? There is an interesting story to be heard from the gear in your bag … and the echoes of the gear no longer with you.Resources mentioned in this episode:Podcast Episode #45, Is My Photo Kit Obsolete? f/45 Scott's current gear is all listed at https://scottdavenportphoto.com/gearRate & ReviewIf you enjoyed this episode, please rate and review it on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Podchaser.com. We encourage all of our listeners to register for the free digital online edition of the Outdoor Photo/Video Travel Imaging Conference (OPTIC) 2020 hosted by B&H and sponsored by Panasonic, Sony, Nikon, Canon, FUJIFILM, Godox, and many others. As most of you know, the B&H Photography Podcast has regularly attended this annual conference, in New York, and recorded wonderful interviews with the likes of Michael Kenna, Joyce Tenneson, and Ron Magill. This year, the conference will be held online, but still with an incredible lineup of photographers and speakers, including keynotes speakers Ami Vitale and Clyde Butcher. On today’s episode of the podcast, we offer a taste of the photographic insight found at OPTIC. First, we welcome wildlife and bird photographer Lisa Langell, who is also at Tamron and FotoPro Ambassador. With her photo gracing the cover of the current issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine, Langell discusses creating wildlife photography for the home and hotel décor market, about her favorite places in Alaska to photograph bear, and about the personal and interactive way she hosts seminars and webinars. She provides food for thought to those looking for new ways to photograph wildlife. After a break, we welcome National Geographic photographer and Sony Artisan of Light Pete McBride. McBride speaks of his amazing 750-mile walk across the Grand Canyon, which became a NatGeo story, and also a book and a feature-length documentary. At OPTIC you will get the full story—from “River to Rim”—along with images, but we also spoke with McBride about his long-term work shooting the world’s river systems; we gained some insight into aerial photography; and learned how his Sony a7RII weathered a year in the Grand Canyon—and with which he created not only a magazine story, but a book and a movie with that one camera. Also, do not forget to enter The B&H Photography Podcast Leica Photo Challenge for your chance to win a new Leica Q2 Digital Camera Guests: Lisa Langell and Pete McBride Photograph © Lisa Langell

As a companion to last week’s end-of-year review episode, and as a way of kicking off the new year, we will discuss our own photographic new year’s resolutions and gear wish lists on today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast. As our most ardent listeners know, Allan, Jason, and I have wildly different photographic styles and our gear bags reflect those styles. We will start by talking about the photo-related goals that we each have for the coming year. Perhaps inspired by some of the guests we have had on the show this year or our “What is Photography?” project, I have a couple of long-delayed projects I want to get back to, Jason is looking to continue his long-exposure work with urban cityscapes, and Allan is going to dig back into his film archive to digitize long-hidden gems. We will talk a bit about our current work and the techniques we want to improve this year and, after a short break, we will talk a bit about gear. Going around the table, we will discuss what we are currently shooting with and what new (or used) gear we may purchase to help us achieve our new year’s goals. Allan will start by describing the “franken-slide copier” that he built with a Micro-NIKKOR 55mm lens, a Bolt Macro Light, and his trusty Sony a7R II. Jason is looking to experiment with long telephoto lenses, such as the Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS lens, and a new 3 Legged Thing tripod to add to his landscape photography kit, and I want to get back to my street photography roots with a fixed-lens camera such as the Fujifilm X100F or one of the Ricoh GR series cameras. While we do talk gear and you can find links to all products we discussed here, this episode is mostly about our shared passions for photography and keeping creativity an important part of our 2019. What photography goals do you have for the coming year? Photograph © Allan Weitz

Allan recently bought a Sony A7RII, but is feeling that it might not be quite the right camera for a guy with some Canon glass who shoots video on a Canon C100. The boys help him tease out whether to bring it back and find a body that's a better fit.And then Shane wants to find a want to automate import and backup in a way that takes the question marks out of the process. Though Bill & Dan show that sometimes the best intentions often lead to even more questions and complexity.Sony A7RII on AmazonCanon 5D Mark III Body on AmazonPhoto MechanicAdobe Lightroom on AmazonCapture One on AmazonHazel for MacChronosyncSuperDuperBackblaze online backup
In the context of shooting a couple tests in one day, I put the new Sony A7RII through the gauntlet and give you guys some very early feedback. Oh and my Sony 32GB 94MB/s card corrupts during the shoot. Thus putting me behind the 8-ball and forcing me to get creative for the rest of the shoot. Maybe I like that pressure? Blessing in disguise?

We don't replace our primary cameras very often, but to meet increasing videos demands Tyler went with a new Sony, the a7RII. The long and short is that it's image quality is best in class with super sharp, high resolution images with lots of dynamic range in the shadows. The down side is lots of interface design problems, consumer level build quality and very slow image review. Samples from the Sony a7R II

This week, we talk a little about gear and the ongoing debate over megapixels, using the new Sony A7R II as an example. We also talk about film and why it's ultimately pointless to keep having the “film v digital” discussions. Spoiler: they're just different. Use what challenges you and gets you out taking pictures.
